Fieldsports Britain - Roy's crackdown on greys

- Save a red - shoot a grey. Is this Manchester United vs Norwich City? Nope - it's Roy Lupton's conservation call to the nation and it's all about squirrels. The airgunners of Anglesey did it. They successfully shot all the grey squirrels on the island and made it safe for red squirrels, which are doing well there. Airgunning groups from Cornwall to Cumbria are trying to do the same. Roy is at it in Kent. No hope of bringing back red squirrels in the short term, but his work should save a few trees and songbirds. Plus we look at British bowhunting and join Gary Rawlings as he goes to South Africa after kudu and warthog. Hi guys great show as per normal. Roy should put a feeder up in those woods to make the squirrels come to him. Much more efficient and effective than driving around trying to spot them. Ian from the Cornwall Red Squirrel Project

Nice to see a bit of bow hunting, I remember when it was legal in the UK though was too young at the time, and always wanted to use some of the Barnet range's blunts on small game.

With Fieldsports News longer than a German crisp advert David had a good airing tonight. The long news is because there is so much out there. Some of it can be turned to good, e.g. the deer shooting in Scotland story (getting more people involved in stalking/culling training and firearms taking your beast home) can be turned into the Niall Rowantree vision with DMGs running the private culls (no change!) and Forestry and Land Scotland looking after the tags on publicly owned land (£10 million saving to the public purse!).
Don't know about the rest of you but I don't feel so negative about our prospects this year as I did last. It would be interesting to know what others think.

@@fieldsportstv Hi Charlie, I didn't think News' length was a problem tonight but the Scottish deer story was a good one to link to Niall's podcast from last year. We could make that a massive success story if we get rid of the intrusion on private property. As for the rest, many are valid and it is always good to have "and on a lighter note..." story. Fret not, even with David fronting 24 news stories, YOU are still the star! Rest easy tonight.
@@fieldsportstv Hi Charlie, all I would say is that if Fieldsports was on every day then you could shorten it down the news a bit, but Seeing it's only on once a week. I can (and hope others do as well) theres a lot that needs to be reported on in a week.

Put up a feeder and build a blind, let the treerats come to you instead of chasing them around.
More fun chasing them. If you sit on your ass all day in a blind it gets boring after a while. The chase is hunting

David Storton the English are fond of sportsmanship and tradition even when killing small animals.

I agree with the squirrel issue yet no one wants to give shooters a permission to shoot ps I'm in Kent if anyone wants some greys removed
Years ago in Windsor Park, one of the gamekeepers had two Labradors barking up at a tree, when I asked him why he said the squirrels moved away from the dogs and he could shoot them.
That was a time when there was 1/- a tail on the vermin!
Here in ireland we have red squirells, but iv seen albinos too. What would that be from genetics wise as we have no greys in southern ireland. Only greys in dublin and in the north of ireland. Cheers in advance

Anybody thinking that magpies don’t predate on songbirds has never watched them hunting a hedge ! Corvids in general are up by hundreds of percent, in Fifty years since I was a teenager, there has been a downturn in culling crows,and now we have near medieval levels of crow populations in our cities.

I'm glad to see Roy, seven months later, using the air rifle on greys.
I have flair on mine, its so hard for new channels....I do knives and hardly have any subs, some UK legal too
I threw stones at a magpie whilst running at it because it flew in on a group of starlings, trapped and caught one and pecked its head until it died. It came back to try and fly off with it but it was too heavy.
@19:10 if printed with PLA that isn't a problem from a pollution PoV as it is made from maize and biodegrades in the soil inside a year
we are seeing a growing issue with hunt saboteurs over here but we have the advantage that there is no right to roam in Ireland, if you're on private land without permission then its trespassing.

I've got permission on a 10 acre wood/garden just north of Nottingham and I shoot 20-30 squirrels every year. There's no end to them, the farm bordering the property got over 70 last year!! I've noticed a big increase in bird life since I started shooting here 10 years ago, the woods were almost dead silent and now it's noisy as hell with all the little birds arguing with each other.

I was reading this week that some company,can’t remember the name have done some generic stuff on greys to make the infertile. They say it will be a humane way of controlling them.

I have no issue with hunting but am glad bow hunting in the UK is banned because it is the least humane form of killing animals for pleasure.
