I’m here for the music but stayed for the life journey. This is an excellent take on the downside to alcohol. I went to a Sabaton concert on Saturday and drank a little too much. Sunday morning I realized, “well this is why I haven’t drank in years.” I just feel like I’m too old for this anymore. My body can’t take it and I have responsibilities. It’s so good to listen to your body and appreciate life through an holistic lens. No chemicals needed. Here’s to keeping healthy and clean!
I cut back 95% of my drinking last November. I sleep much better and lost 40 pounds. Mornings are considerably easier. I will still have a few at holiday/birthday parties but no more drinking during the week or most weekends. Thanks for telling us about your experience Bernth. You are a cool dude.

I'm coming up on one year sobriety after over 10 years of drinking daily. In the final years I didn't touch my guitar. Now I'm actually practicing again instead of being trapped in a cycle of procrastination and confusion. Thanks for the inspirational video!
Thanks for posting the video! I am an older (53 now, holy shit) dude who has been playing guitar since I was 13. The decision and move to pick up a guitar and learn how to play it was one of two I made during that time, which helped me break out of the trials and tribulations of adolescence, and start to feel comfortable in my skin. The second one was drinking alcohol. I stayed with both of those things throughout my life, but the drinking habit was much more consistent and grew while the guitar playing was whatever for decades, with ebbs and flows. By the time I was 40, my guitar playing hadn't improved at all since i was 20. Maybe it got little worse. But my drinking skills were pro level, lol. Well, I quit drinking a little over two years ago, and like you, it was a great decision for me. I'm still an amateur guitar player, but my skills in that department have improved more in the past two years than any time other than the first few years when i started playing. That's just one area of my life that's improved. My health, my career, my relationships with my wife, family and friends, other hobbies, my finances. Everything has gotten better. I don't regret drinking all those years. As I said, it helped me when i was young, but i certainly got all I could out of it, at the very latest, by the time I was exiting my 20s. I wish i could have found a way to quit years earlier, but i couldn't imagine life without alcohol for so long. I commend you for figuring out how to quit earlier! I encourage others to consider it.
I quit drinking about a year ago. At that time I was in a really bad spot and wasn't about to blame the alcohol. Long story short I ended up in the hospital in really bad shape due to my heavy drinking. I went through a lot of shit and had to do a lot of soul searching. Once i admitted to myself that all my problems was alcohol related I was then able to start taking the right steps. What a difference a year makes. I am now in a much, much better place, I am happy, content, responsible, confident, etc. I'm even playing guitar again. For me, life is SO much better without alcohol.
So true, After years of frequent hangovers. Just waking up energized in the morning from a good night of sleep is a real blessing. Thx for your video on the subject!
Thank you for raising awareness of this topic, especially in the metal scene it is difficult to stay away from alcohol. Since I quit 2 years ago my life also improved tremendously. I used to be lonely, uncreative, judgemental and addicted - not a fun person to be around. Now, after some hard work kicking the addiction, I do indeed like my personality, have amazing relationships with people, started playing two instruments and can take responsibility for all things in life. It's damn hard but it's unbelievably rewarding to quit.
Thank You Bernth! Being sober every day is one of the things I enjoy the most in my life. I've been in a band for years and I really know how life on a tour looks like. I love that You are sharing Your story. Keep on rockin'. Greetings from Poland.
Congratulations on the 3 years Bernth! Another good thing about being sober is improved memory and focus. Keep up the great work, my hats off for you sir. 👏🤘🤘
Had a hard time passing up a “party” in the past. Became a Bartender, got Sober a long time ago. Having watched people getting wasted as I work, and hanging, I can safely say that I have never woke up the next day regretting being Sober! The older you are, the truer that is! I admire your attitude, dedication and love of the guitar/music!
I'm SOO thankful for this video! I struggled with drinking and quit but then I fell back into it again and today I needed inspiration to not go back so I can improve my music skills and this is THE EXACT video I need to see at this exact moment! Thank you so much Bernth! I'm going to watch this every time I get an itch because your right about how it screws your playing up as well as everything else in life if you can't use in moderation. Congratulations. When I was playing in a band getting blind after our gigs was part of the routine. We were only a tiny local band so no comparison but I totally understand how much it would affect us if we had to back up multiple shows in a row. Good on you!

Good for you man! I quit 3 years ago as well when my boy was born. Smoking, drinking it all had to stop. I can honestly say I'm currently living my best life! Positive vibes to you from Chicago. 🤙
Hey Bernth, really inspiring video, resonated with me a lot. I had my last drink in Dec 2016, decided to stay sober for 1 year, and here we are almost 6 years in. I’ve seen cases where alcohol wrecked the lives of people I’ve known or at least heard about. It’s sad that drinking is still a social norm in many cultures. Really cool to see how much more you can do with a clear head in the morning :-). Keep rockin’ bro!
A very wise decision you made, one that many, sadly never make. Keep on the awesome journey of increased wisdom, Bernth, it is beyond worth it. Blessings be to you always.
Good for You Bernth!! It's Fantastic to see through Clear Eyes isn't it? Sounds like you have a good handle on life..Been 25 years Sober. Couldn't image ever going back to the way I was. Bernth you are so inspiring and I enjoy content very much. Your a beautiful soul and a kick a$$ guitar player! So happy to hear that you've got 3 years clean from alcohol. You Rock man!
I quit drinking in june, i had a medication change from my neurologist and it had deadly interactions despite my being a depressed alcoholic for the past decade of my life. I almost died in june and I'm not exaggerating. I began losing blood, from puking to the other end. It ended in a massive seizure for around 20 minutes, if my father wasnt with me I wouldnt be here. I bit off a large piece of my tongue and when I woke up from the seizure I puked alot of blood. Since then I've been in absolute fear of death that I wont drink. I'm feeling alot better and I love seeing more and more positive recovery stories like yours. Thanks for this Bernth, Im practicing more guitar again, its been hard because I missed a very very large opportunity a decade ago to play guitar in a Black metal band called "Dynasty of Darkness" I couldnt travel at the time due to some legal reasons and spiraled into a depression while waiting for my legal battles to end, which 2 years ago, they did and I have no criminal record and can travel, unfortunately I have to deal with the fact I am 35 now with nothing to show for my life.
Hi, thats weird your video popping up now about stopping alcohol, im an alcoholic and a few days into quiting, you given me big inspiration to carry on stopping, i will definatly check them books out in your video, many thanks Paul
I honestly can’t say enough good things about you. As a young man, you’ve accomplished so much. You e achieved great success. Rather than let this go to your head, you’ve doubled down and worked even harder. All the while remaining grounded and down to earth. You are constantly putting out epic lessons and guides for up and coming guitarists. Your packages on Patreon are seriously fantastic. Beyond all of this, you are a GREAT role model for young guitarists everywhere. Globally. If more people who are in the spot light could only show this to our younger generations. I remember watching your video when you’d said you stopped drinking. You mentioned your practice routine had improved and made a few more notes, but didn’t really make a bug deal about it. Honestly, I think it’s a huge deal. Congratulations. Too many people let drugs and alcohol destroy what could be a brilliant career. I can’t thank you enough for all you’ve done for young guitarists around the world. Thank you.
Good for you Bernth .You are incredibly talented and have worked very hard for it. Your new song Waterworks sounds amazing ! Alcohol is a dead end street that only hinders progress in every aspect of life. I'm almost 57 years old, most of my friends have drank themselves to death one after the other. I drank for over 40 years ! While playing music has helped keep me young ( it does that), alcohol was starting to cause problems with health and in my life. I quit drinking almost a year ago and I feel better, clearer, wake up fresh with energy and a more positive attitude. Congratulations on your success and sobriety ! PS I have a limited edition Crawling Skull Void T-shirt, you're never to old to make a fashion statement ha ha
Thanks so much for sharing your journey in personal health and respect. It's even more impressive than your world-class musical abilities, which are clearly benefitting from your personal life commitments.
I'm so glad you posted this... Out of work for 6 mo, I almost pawned one of my guitars this weekend to pay for "fun"... That was my last straw with my addiction. Also, while it's hard to express how you've benefited without sounding preachy but apparently when you add riffs behind it, it just becomes the truth.
I've been thinking of taking that step. I'm not a professional at all, but I noticed that slowly my passions like running and playing guitar got replaced with drinking to deal with the stress of work/life and it hasn't done anything useful at all obviously. Thank you especially for showing the books that you found helpful. I want to get back to playing guitar all hours of the day as my vice, just anything but where I am now.
Great video! Thank you for sharing your insight on this. I recently stopped drinking for good and it's always nice (a boost) to see how well it works for others. It was an inspiring way to start my day so I thank you!
man unreal! keep up the good work! i quit almost 2 years ago and it has changed my life in almost every way. in all positive ways! i love your videos and you have been inspiring me to play more and just get better everyday. and to have fun doing it. your an inspiration! really cool to see your journey!
Absolutely cool that you shared this. I just got a year again. I had quit for about ten years but I lost some people I loved in a terrible way and fell back into that blur of alcohol. I've tried allot of drugs but alcohol always seemed perfect for me, but it isn't. It takes me nowhere and I start drinking to deal with hangovers. I'm very happy for you know it's rough to be sober around other musicians but it's worth it.
I stopped drinking a few years ago for two years, then started drinking again....I've been sober for a month now. The party life is great, but I reached the top of my productivity (and happiness!!!!) just during that two years without alcohol, no doubt. I definitely agree with everything you said in the video. Tested, confirmed, and highly recommended. Thanks for the book's recommendation. 👍👍👍🤘
I really so appreciate this, Bernth. I had several years sober before the pandemic from weed, alcohol and nicotine. Now I have several months sober from all of them. Sobriety is the right choice for me. It is really inspiring to see the musicians I follow emulating positive behavior. Thank you for sharing.
not a drinker(im a teen lol) was never planning to drink but this was sick life advice and would totally have fun doing all of this on tour without drinking, greetings from norway.
I quit 8 years ago. It’s insane how free you become. I went from feeling trapped and lost. To motivated and free. I remembered literally coming to tears thinking that I’d never be at where I am today. Now I come to tears thinking that at one point I thought I’d never get to where I am at today!!!🤯
Good for you! I quit drinking for 15 years and just recently picked it back up and love it, lol. My approach is much different these days. I’m much more relaxed and can much more easily just let things go. I think the people I work with appreciate the mellower me ;-)
I'm not a touring musician, but I definitely can see the benefit of this lifestyle! I tried it myself last year for a number of months, and it was very helpful for me to accomplish some meaningful goals in the meantime. Thanks for your videos! They've really been inspiring me to get better at guitar
I'm 8 months sober on the 10th. I feel more useful to the people around me, most of all my family and my band. My guitar playing has improved tenfold and I'm more driven to succeed at what I want in life. Alcohol and drugs are ultimately a waste of time. It took me 10 years to realize that. I'm lucky to be as young as I am and have that realization; many don't see it until later, if at all. Stay away from drugs and alcohol, kids. Stick to your passion, and don't allow others to sway you from your path. You'll be better for it in the long run, and much sooner in that long run.
Absolutely true. I quit drinking and smoking and it has improved my practice routine along with my health routine. The idea of ‘I’ll only social drink, or only on the weekends’ is a lie we tell ourselves. It’s just a horrible poison that makes you feel like crap the next day
That is so excellent man! I do not drink Alchool often myself, I am kind of chubby but, always am health conscious. This will help those who are actually ready to be positive. I am so happy for you that you made so much effort in doing so great! Love for passion as a Man is more important than being a fun friend. You come first good for you!
For me, it has been eight years since I have touched any kind of alcohol, and I don't miss it. I live right outside of Mannheim, and I recognized where it has been where the short video was taken from. If I had only known.... I am very happy for your success! 😊
I stopped drinking in 06. one year after losing my home in katrina hurricane in Biloxi. Not only my home but it would also pretty much end my gigging years as a drummer. I lived , breathed drums. from 1980 til 05 06 which I think I was at most sitting in at local band in Ga where I had moved after storm. I never replaced the kit and gear. My gaining custody of my kids came around the same time and my son took to music big time at 10. so I got him guitars and after over a decade I finally bought a strat and started back in music. Still learning and oddly I play the most relaxing stuff which I love. However still miss metal, prog and fusion drumming. Jazz trained early in my life I would never see the pro scene due to issues with drugs and alcohol. In Biloxi around 02? I cannot remember. but I got a DUI and while I was lost in the system in jail I had my uncle who's was a major part of 3 doors down kryptonite first recording and promoting airtime , would be signed and looking for a drummer. Had I not been locked up I was definitely mentioned as a try out. I knew Brad well. Often let him keep my kit set up and share the kit as to not need to set up for second venue change. Anyway. Everyone had their shot but I shut that out over the years. eventually I stopped drinking. Mainly because I had no choice. Now I don't miss it. I hate the stuff I did while hammered.

Thank you for sharing, addictions are no joke and adjusting ones mindset is key to over coming.
It's great to hear you have made this change in your life.
Thank you for sharing.🎸👍
Awesome bruv!!! It’s actually very inspiring to watch. 🤘🤘🤘

Thank You Bernth! Being sober every day is one of the things I enjoy the most in my life. I've been in a band for years and I really know how life on a tour looks like. I love that You are sharing Your story. Keep on rockin'. Greetings from Poland.
My 3 years is coming up in less than 1.5 months. I'm with you, just about everything has gotten better. And easier. Keep it up man!
Congratulations on the 3 years Bernth! Another good thing about being sober is improved memory and focus. Keep up the great work, my hats off for you sir. 👏🤘🤘
Proud of you Bernth! You are a very positive influence. Thanks.
Great job, man! I'm 18 months sober, and finally really focusing on getting better at guitar. Feeling the best I've felt in years.

Great video! My respect, admiration, congratulations and gratitude to you!
Great video B. Love your channel and content. You're a very humble person. I appreciate that.
ROCK ON!
Congrats for 3 years man! I am a great fan of your courses. The difference is huge as I started to practice your way. Cheers from Hungary!

Congratulations. When I was playing in a band getting blind after our gigs was part of the routine. We were only a tiny local band so no comparison but I totally understand how much it would affect us if we had to back up multiple shows in a row. Good on you!
Always inspiring tips and kind words for professionals of creativity (in many areas). Thank you Bernth, you're making the difference for a lot of people. Best wishes.
I'm glad you've made this wise decision, you look so much better now, and I'm sure you feel better. You are a strong person, congrats🤗
Thanks for sharing this, and thanks for the book recommendation. Also, congratulations on 3 years!
Great insights into the realities of touring. Well done on your self discipline, a good example, keep it up.
Thanks for sharing the story ! Awesome to hear the positivity 🤘
Thanks for this video, man, it's really awesome to hear somebody talk about the unique experiences music can offer without drugs in the foreground
Congratulations buddy, hope you're doing great.
Thank you so much for sharing this with everyone. I am sure this is going to help some people out their with there internal struggles. Keep putting out the awesome content!!
Thanks for talking about your own experience of that shit. All the best, Bernth

Ty so much for making this!!! 😊
Gratz on your journey and all your success, my friend... you deserve it! You're a badass and inspiration to us all!
Its awesome your Sober man congrats! on you're 3 years! the only thing that makes me sad about this is I am a Texan and huge Pantera fan. I wish all of the guys in Pantera had gotten sober after they broke up, and had the chance to reconcile their differences. RIP St. Vinnie and St. Dime.
I've got over 2 years sober myself and it's the best decision I ever made. Good for you Bernth, keep it up man! 🤘
Good for you man! I quit 3 years ago as well when my boy was born. Smoking, drinking it all had to stop. I can honestly say I'm currently living my best life! Positive vibes to you from Chicago. 🤙
Congrats you have transformed to a better version of yourself now u dont have weakness
Playing guitar since 1971.You had to really Want it,back then to Learn. LOL..What is on RUclips for learning now is amazing. Liked and Subbed.. 👍👍
Congratulations ! Keep sober and safe. Music, health and family first !!!!
Thank you.
04:23 this is definitely the industrial area in Cyberpunk.
Thanks for a great message. I agree, life has been better sober since 01.23.90.
Bernth thanks for sharing. I too get more kix out of creating and playing than partying. Your guitar tips are quite helpful!
So much respect for you. This is one of my last struggles. Thank you so much.
your journey is inspirational. i love your content and the transparency you keep to show your journey. 😊
Thank you for posting this. I feel like the psychological and the emotional component of this is much less spoken about.
Thanks for this video, man
You carry a really good message!
Quite à good décision, you and your neurons gonna live longer and better

Now I come to tears thinking that at one point I thought I’d never get to where I am at today!!!🤯
good for you, and thank you for giving us an insight into your life
Congrats! It takes a strong mind and soul to quit something that had a hold on your life. You deserve the happiness🤘
To be great as you is important to focus the energy in the right place, great message to real rock guitar aspirants!
Thanks for sharing. You are such an inspiration.
You come first good for you!
congratulations! I'm approaching one year of being sober on the 21st :D

Great words of advice!
Bro am from India and I really respect your dedication towards your art.. the way you are passionate towards guitar gives me a great inspiration to be more focussed in my life.... really man, you are just awesome
