15 years before he stepped on the Moon with Neil Armstrong from Apollo 11's Lunar Lander “Eagle, Lieutenant Edwin E. “Buzz” Aldrin was an F-86 combat pilot with the 16th Fighter Interceptor Squadron during the Korean War, flying out of Suwon Air base in 1953. The 16th was part of 51st Fighter Interceptor Wing, commanded by legendary ace Col. Francis S. “Gabby” Gabreski.
Aldrin flew 66 missions and is credited with downing 2 Mig-15s. This short interview was filmed with his F-86 shortly after landing from a mission patrolling the Yalu River.

Wow, flying a Sabre jet in combat in Korea. I doubt that Lt. will ever do anything that interesting for the rest of his career....

The early generation of astronauts were unflappable, they flew in combat, were test pilots flying risky unproven aircraft, were astronauts helping create the early launch vehicles, then flew those new vehicles into space. Numerous men died "pushing the envelope." Their whole career was full of dangerous missions. I hope we can be grateful for their bold contributions...

These guys were the stuff. Same stoic guys as were in the Army, Navy and Marines. Rock on Buzz, even though you were annoying later on once you got your PhD in space maneouvering or some such.
