  • Seventeen years ago, Hasan left his village in Macedonia fleeing with his family to Turkey.
After relinquishing his Macedonian passport in exchange for Turkish citizenship, the 54-year-old never looked back.
    Until now.
For years he lived in self-imposed exile even though his family invited him to return to his land and distant loved ones.
Finally he relents and decides it is time to go back to his birthplace. He accepts his niece's invitation to return for a two week visit.
We follow Hassan as he discovers long forgotten memories of a place where time has stood eerily still, and peace, once threatened, remained intact.

Poor guy. I feel for him. It's the wounds of war. Glad to see he has rebuilt his life in Turkey. Turkey is a hospitable country.

It’s difficult to express the feelings that one has when they lose a loved one, and there’s a big distance between them (kilometers and kilometers of roads)...
Whatever the circumstances were, I understand and feel bad for Hassan....There are a lot of us that are in his shoes. God Bless all good people!

Bloody war, or the threat of war, see what sadness and disruption it brings to families and communities.

shirley leah But the Turks who migrated to Turkey did the right thing. The Economy is booming and Turkey is a powerhouse. The western media is keen to portray erdogan as a bad leader but he's brought prosperity and stability to his people. And that's what matters. Macedonia's neighbor Greece had it good while Turkey was very poor but now it's bankrupt. How the tables have turned.

What language did Hassan use with his family in Macedonia? It sounded Turkish to me. Is that normally spoken in Macedonia?

He spoke Turkish, indeed. But in Macedonia, they speak lots of different languages. The national language is Macedonian, but minorities speak Roma, Turkish, Albanian, Greek, etc.
