My beautiful Rosalyn and Betty banging away on the backgrounds. The look and sound of the Motown sound right here in live and living mother-f'in color!
"My Baby Loves Me" is a 1966 soul standard by Martha Reeves but released under Martha and The Vandellas. None of the Vandellas are featured in this song. Instead, the background is sung by Motown's session group, The Andantes, and another legendary Motown group, The Four Tops. Co-written (with Sylvia Moy) and co-produced by William "Mickey" Stevenson & Ivy Jo Hunter, the song rose to #22 on Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and #3 on Billboard's Hot R&B singles chart.[
You see how Martha stays close to her Vandellas where they actually look like a group unlike Diana Ross who always felt she needed to be far away from her partners. I love this performance and yes they sound amazing.
But during their many hits they performed like a group despite Martha’s name being separate in the groups name. Yes Motown would do this with lead singers but many like Martha rather in the stage or not saw their group as just that, the ego stayed in check.
the early recordings were full bands right there in one room so what you heard on record was it even Cymbals were reduced to Tapping no crash excellent Berry Gordy knew What we wanted but at times Smokey knew too
I think I died and gone to heaven! An earth breaking soul shaking live performance by Martha & The Vandellas singing "My Baby Loves Me" on the Mike Douglas show! Martha, herself, has said in the past that " My Baby Loves Me" was her personal favorite out of all her songs but to me, " Love Makes Me Do Foolish Things" is a very close runner up!
I have always enjoyed this song and to hear a different performance of it is absolutely awesome. Another great performance of this song is on their 1960s live LP. They even engage the audience on that version. They are a classic group.
When Martha or other motown artists performed on talks shows they never had a full rhythym section band backing them as was not the case with Shindig who pulled out all the stops to make sure their vibrance and clarity came through. Shame that legends such as Sam Cooke only got to perform one time in 1964 before he died when the show was in its infant stages It had yet to come into its own until the following year and final year 1966. Martha did sound very good on Mike Douglas show even better than most groups sounded on Ed Sullivan show. Ed did very little to provide right acoustics for his musical guests even when it came to the Beatles
Backed by The Kinfolk. Martha met them on the road and they played behind the group from 66-69. Featuring famed guitarist David T Walker and Melvin Brown on drums
According to Martha's book, it was a band member who came between Martha and Betty Kelly. The tension between Betty Kelly and Martha got so severe that Martha had Betty put out of the Vandellas. After Martha had Betty put out, it wasn't long before Martha had Rosalind put out as well. And that was the end of the hit making days of Martha and the Vandellas. According to Martha, the Vandellas were under contract to Martha not Motown.
@@dchi2012 Well if Ros was working for Motown and not Martha herself, how is it that Martha had to pay the Vandellas herself and how did Martha get the authority to fire not just Betty but Rosalind as well?
I do nit even think Martha had that kind of power at Motown . It was said Berry loved sing,in gout the lead singers, putting their names in front of the groups name. By doing this it gave him more power to if issues with other group members to just remove them and quickly replace them, and keep his lead singers . So he had them sign separate contracts that if evfn if all tried to leave even the lead singer over bad contracts and more he owned the names of the groups and of course their music. It was also said when Martha complained about there lack of exposure ,attention by the label compared he made clear they were not the ish compared to Diana, The Supremes .

I remember back in the day when they would say feathering so and so the group was going too break up because one of them was the main person it seemed like Martha and the Vandellas was the real deal.
Loved seeing Martha & The Vandellas a number of times in the 60's and they were awesome in venues both large & small and played around LA lots, too bad Motown dropped the ball and didn't forge them in to the 70's...
True, it seems that Gordy did not wish to push Martha and the Vandellas as he did the Supremes, but Martha and the Vandellas did get a lot of radio airplay as I remember. It seems that Martha and the Vandellas were on constant radio rotation from 1964 through 1967. They also made a lot of TV appearances including the Ed Sullivan show. It seems that it wasn't the Supremes that Gordy was pushing but Diana Ross as a solo artist. Gordy cared for Mary and Florence about as much as he cared for the Vandellas.
Shawn Baldwin Martha and the Vandellas are the second biggest Motown girl group but certainly not the second biggest girl group of all time, especially factoring in all the girl groups like The Supremes, TLC, Destiny’s Child, The Spice Girls, etc.

I can't believe this is live. Everything about this record is fire!!! They could have been on top.consistent and better than the supremes. Only if Barry cared enough. What a shame. To me this is the best song by Martha and the vandellas!!!
The Vandellas singing Heatwave live on Mike Douglas is here on RUclips. It is difficult to bring up though because somehow it is on the same clip as Phil Collins. I found it only by luck.
I still do nit get why many have to downplay other female groups at Motown. I can love the Suprenes and also love Martha and Tge Vandellas as well as other female groups. With this I also have ti be honest and saying The Supremes received preferential treatment based on the lead singer in a full relationship with the Boss owner of the label. Her in her immaturity, ego targeted other female artist there and female groups. Dian’s was like a spoiled brat run amok as even her group mates had to deal with him, her power to pick up the phone demanding him to check them like others.
Martha the voice of Motown. Martha could sing anything they gave her to sing.

Martha knocks Ross into a cocked hat when it comes to singing
The separation was Motown's doing. By 1968, Martha was separated from her singing partners.
But during their many hits they performed like a group despite Martha’s name being separate in the groups name. Yes Motown would do this with lead singers but many like Martha rather in the stage or not saw their group as just that, the ego stayed in check.
