It's hilarious how westerners deride this movie for being inaccurate but the Japanese absolutely adore it
People just hate America and Americans
@@captainyank138 exactly. it's just plain and simple that firearms will beat melee weapons every time, and the fact that this movie focuses almost completely on a good shot that switches his weapon for an inferior one and then fights for a secluded village against the guys with guns is almost comedic. basically nothing makes sense.
Just like woke people
@@captainyank138 There are plenty of reasons to, but the same can be said for any nation and its people.
Not only that but in reality the samurai had PLENTY of firearms at this time too
"I won't tell you about how he died, but I will tell you about how he lived!" One of the best lines from this movie!
I was stationed in Okinawa for 2.5yrs, which most people hated, and while I would have rather been stationed in America, it was the most amazing experience ever. Towards the end I would travel to the remote areas of the island, looking at WW2 memorials. When I was at “Hacksaw Ridge” in Naha, an old Japanese man speaking broken English took it upon himself to translate all the Japanese scripture around that hill, and share the story of the battle. No hatred, no resentment, just generations past discussing something tragic…
Why would people hate it? Dude you just lived the dream
Holy shit that would have been such a powerful moment
@@lunaasonininongry6297 the locals treat US Army stationed there like shit? Basically like being gringo aka gaijin and armed.
@@Ren-bj4xm I was stationed in Okinawa for a while and I can say there is a valid reason for the distrust. Okinawa is home to nearly 50k us soldiers and although most of them are good there are few bad, really bad apples there. The government basically just arms a bunch of 20 year olds, fills them with superiority complex and send them here. I have seen plenty of younger soldiers being rude, racists and sometimes aggressive toward locals. Not to mention the occasional big incidents, like the Okinawa rape/murder case, where a base personnel killed a local women.
Thats why locals always treat us with distrust
@@Ren-bj4xm like they have said, the us soldiers there have even been acused of multiple instances of rape, robery, whatever you say, plenty are racist hillbillys that get into uncle sams club and then are racist hillbillys outside the US.
Actually a really beautiful movie, even tear-inducing at times
Hope he likes this
Fun fact my mum worked on this in the art department (Props) so weird seeing it on this channel
My favorite movie ever!
Saw this as young adult. Really sad. Was this film based on true story? I thought the Samauri still exist in Japan asmasters of ceremony instead of warriors now.
@@hackman669 though the story and most of the characters are fiction, it does relate to the history at that time. I would suggest reading into the Meji period and the boshin war.
What it should have been called: An American war hero with PTSD heads to Japan in search of death but finds a reason to live.
That's just the description of the movie
I think this is the only movie (made by Western media) where Westerners got a glimpse of Meiji Era Japan (1868-1912). As you can see here, Japan is modernizing for the first time and rapidly. And of course, not everyone is happy with the changes. At this point in the movie, Japan is mixed between the old and the new.
I’ll admit, I did feel bit unease when I saw this, how the Americans are giving Japan weapons and teaching modern warfare given Japan will later use them against America and their Asian neighbors.
But it’s not the first time. Portuguese traders sold Japan guns and later use them to invade Korea during the Imjin War (1592-1598)
Damn Japan. Back stabbing countries
@@nandinhocunha440 If you ask me, I feel more betrayed when Japan sided with the 8-Nation Alliance during the China’s Boxer Rebellion of 1900. Japan is the only Asian nation.
@@nandinhocunha440 They also betrayed the Dutch because the Netherlands were the only one to trade with them during Japan's period of isolation for 2 centuries by just invading the dutch east indies
Japan was on the side of the west until they refused to sign a racial equality clause in the League of Nations which turned Japan against them.
Why are you uneasy that America helped modernize a country that has become the bulwark against China?

One of my favorite films of all time. Great story, great performances and great score from Zimmer. Kinda sad this recap skipped over the training montage though, as there was a powerful moment in there where Nathan kept getting beaten and knocked down but kept getting up, despite repeated blows to the head from a wooden sword.
Name?
@@tangetaier1783 The Last Samurai.
Most of the recap skip some scenes so that they will encourage the viewers to show the movie itself. Some put it as their disclaimer that they recaps are not substitute in watching a movie.

I thought someone might reference Sabaton here, just could remember the name of the song… but the song and film are very similar in topic, the old way (Samurai) opposing the new way (Imperial Japanese Army (IJA))

@@nickbrickslegoanimations1042 I’m fairly certain the song is about the same battle depicted at the end of the movie.
Who the hell cares if it’s historically inaccurate or heavily romanticized; that is what makes cinema an art form. It is supposed to tell a story evoking emotions from the audience as all art does
that's right! if you ONLY want Historical Accuracy then go watch a documentary instead
nah everyone loves it, them just woke people hates it, they hate their own race and their country, i live in a third world country, i think i love america more than them
Show me a movie that does not stretch poetic license.
Finally, someone appreciates this movie as much as I do.
Funfact: Samurai used gunpowder weapons for a long time prior to Perry's Tokyo visit via the sole Dutch trading post. Katsumoto's rebellion used modern weaponry, he ended up using bows and swords because they ran out of ammunition.
This is one of the movie recaps that show the movie can't be condensed, you must experience it from beginning to end.
Nope
I absolutely love The Last Samurai, could easily watch it 100 times in a row and never get tired of it. Alongside Dances With Wolves, it shares the slot for my favorite all time classic movie.
I've watched it about 6 times? 3 of the times I've watched it, I convinced other people to watched it with me. It's the only movie, that isn't mainstream, I think, that I ALWAYS recommend to people. I loved all the main characters, the relationships built, it's my favourite movie of all time. I just.... AGGGGHHHH!!
Amazing! I love BOTH these movies as well. There's a thing about human conflict, deep passion, love and the clash of cultures between indigenous and the west. Great stuff!
Historical inaccuracy aside, what makes this movie so compelling is the clash of culture worlds apart, during a romanticized period in time and the age old story of the love between a man and a woman.
Seeing the japanese soldier happy after hitting the target brings back my humanity
I remember watching this movie in my living room. It was the last movie I watched before my life was turned upside down. Outstanding movie.
One of my most favorite movies of all time, I saw this as a kid.

Personally, I’m always fascinated what East Asia was like around the end of the 19th Century/beginning of 20th Century. We can only imagine their surprise and shock when they first saw steam engines, cars, and motorized vehicles, electricity, and their first taste of coffee.
While these inventions took time and trials-and-errors to build in the West, they are introduced in East Asia practically overnight by comparison.
I’ve seen historical-drama shows and movies like:
Jet Li’s “Once Upon A Time In China” Series and “Fearless.”
Japanese drama “Clouds Over The Hill.”
Korean drama “Mr. Sunshine.”
Especially in japan, Japan closed off their borders for a long time and they were given the name the hermit kingdom due to them closing their borders and fighting between them selves. The moment they saw large US ships they were in awe since they were still living a decade later than the rest.
@@lunaasonininongry6297
The American ships didn’t just showed up, I heard they fired a few shots from naval cannons at their harbor to display their power.
Commodore Matthew Perry is the one leading the expedition.
Basically just like that, Americans fired few cannons and Japan submitted to open their borders.
I thought Korea was ‘the’ hermit kingdom.
Not just Japan, the entire East Asia (mainly China, Korea, and Japan) were isolated countries even to each other both in political, cultural, and geographical, though each have their own reasons.
Though I gotta say, I too am an Asian, a Westernized Asian to be exact. It’s kind of funny for me see Asians back react with surprise or shock to Western modern invention and stuff.
For one example, they never heard of coffee before? Everybody (nowadays) knows what coffee is.
You know, like how some stuff seems so new and mysterious back then, but they are common everyday things in the West or today.
By the way, I choose tea over coffee anytime.
Not all those are solely west's contribution. Without almost half of all of asia, as well as some part of africa, no modern car would be invented yet.
THIS IS A VERY GOOD CONVERSATION!
This was one of my favorite movies growing up, hits on all the right heart strings

I don't really cry that much during movies but the ending (SPOILER) when Algren helped Katsumoto in his Seppuku and all the Japanese Imperial Army prostates themselves as a sign of respect, I cried.
one of my all time favorite movie...lots to learn...lots to take in todays life...lots to make ourselves a human again.
The Last Samurai. One of the Greatest Stories ever told through Cinema.
As a Japanese person, I love this film that indicates the dignity of the samurai
but 90% of the stuff in the film are unhistorically accurate
Hollywood tends to corrupt everything it touches. History is no exception.
@@MrHoll87 enough of this bs. The director purposely depicted the samurai this way because of how western people would depict a samurai. Just because it’s historically inaccurate it still manages to deliver its beautiful message and not to mention the soundtrack is amazing aswell.
@@lunaasonininongry6297 Lol You need to chill a little bit. I'm not trashing on the movie, it's actually one of my all time favorites, sound track included as I love anything by Hans Zimmer. You literally had one job, her name is Taka not Kata
A couple things…first of all, Buddhist prayer beads are not “ look alike rosaries “. That’s just disrespectful, man. Also, when Algren was taken prisoner, in the clip you showed he wasn’t so much haunted by his dreams but rather detoxing from alcohol. I hate to nitpick but hey, that’s who we are…
Gonna disagree with you on the second one, first one is on point. He was haunted by his past, trough the first half of the movie he keeps having flashbacks of the slaughter of the native americans after he made friends with them. He seems to have PTSD and he's self medicating with alcohol. In the scene he sees the fight and hears the gunfire and even hears the fight between himself and the general who ordered the massacre. He even yells "No, i told you" as response. The whole movie aims to show how the inner peace he found in the village healed his ptsd and his alcoholism.
@@theonlyoneandtruelorddoofu2769 I get that…you’re not wrong…. but him detoxing so bad that his cries for Sake (“SAAAAKKKKKEEEEE”!!!) echoed through the whole village was right up there with his guilt/ptsd. Both things are true, Algren was seriously messed up.
Recap also failed to follow up on the white tiger vision, which is a shame.
@@vanillathunder3024 Oh yes he was surely suffering from the fever, needing alcohol and the PTSD. I love the movie for focusing on that inner peace and calm.
@@MrHoll87 Dude yes!! Like the reason katsumoto spared him was because he saw him as the representation of the white tiger in his dream.
This movie is beautiful, peaceful and one of the greatest movie ever made.

Best. Movie. Ever. And theres a lesson for us all in it
4:40 a single "refle" haha

Yeah the reader always says riffle instead of rifle.
Nice
The movie was completely inaccurate from the history side for those who don’t know
The time period in the movie was set in Japan was in the Meiji era where it’s been a few hundred years since Japan has opened doors to trade but they didn’t realize how far behind they were with weapons and tactics, also new technology, the Samurai despise this and told the emperor not to trade with foreign materials cause it can ruin our traditional roots and culture of what a samurai is, the emperor had no choice but did it anyways and this infuriated the Samurais and caused major conflicts in Japan for the nobles and political parties in Japan, the imperial army is what Japan’s new army are called, with armies 10x the size of the Samurai, the emperor told the Samurai or so called rebels to surrender but they refused and a war or battle mostly broke out 500 samurais fought against the imperial army, the Samurai was lucky and got away within the first wave of the battle but lost significant amount of men 500 now down to 60, once the samurai made the final push all of them were dead, but after the incident the emperor and political parties started to take in consideration that they can’t forget who they were so they honored all of the samurais after the incident, and all of this happened after the battle of shiroyama
and u were there?
@@ExtrusionXDesigns lmao, no I just know a bit of history
It wasn’t made to be accurate, it was based on a French guy who loved his men and fought till the death, which made the character Nathan Algren
The Japanese Lord (Katsumoto) was based on Saigo Takamori, who pledged loyalty to the emperor but the government would fight him, so Saigo Takamori would go to Tokyo to ask questions, but was stopped by the Imperial army, and he would die committing seppuku
However, the French captain was fighting against the emperor for his men, while Saigo takamori is fighting for the Emperor
@@dukekevy6650 that makes sense
You got a couple things mixed up.
Japan opened borders and 12 years later the Boshin war between the emperor and Shogun broke out. The Shogun was the one who opened the borders, not the emperor. The emperor even tried to close them again until seeing it was of no use.
What followed was the Boshin war, where emperor basicly couped himself back into power. That war was less about modernization than just a normal power struggle.
Ignoring the Ezo republic, that's when the Meji Period starts.
Taigo Satsuma, who lead the emperor's forces in the Boshin War rebelled over the basically abolishment of the Samurai class, not the modernization itself. And they didn't win a single battle. Well excluding that for hearts and minds of the people.
The background music of this video makes it look more epic.

One of my favorite movies
I built this town somewhere in the world where the samurai life is still going to this day
Lmao the thumbnail, my brain thought he was holding a sword in one hand and a glock in the other
I like this movie but find it funny the Japanese have no idea how to use fire arms when they had been for hundreds of years up until that point, the Samurai would have tacitcs of their own and plenty of rifles to use.
They and their men-at-arms may have known them but most of the peasants making up the new army might not.
Most likely because those men weren't soldier or had no combat training. They were peasants and farmers, with no idea how to even raise a sword. They were brought there as they foolishly thought numbers and bullets would go over skill and training.
And yes, the rebelling Samurai were armed with firearms.
@@theonlyoneandtruelorddoofu2769 movie is not accurate . Japan had and was producing arms in the time period suggested in the movie . Its just for lore of Americans living up this idea that Japan and Americans were friendly and have always helped each other while putting in how thoughtful the Japanese are . the Japanese are up with hitler in my history book . Japan were the nazis of Asia .
@@XQUEZZYX Yes? So? We were talking about the movie, weren't we. It's fictional movie, in which the japanese didn't know how to shoot because they were peasants. That is also a thing multiple different countries used in war and battles.
Actually its a good movie and moreover I have a nice title of movie plss create more content like thia!!
This is a very accurate movie as samurais don't use their Katana in battles when they don't have a feeling they will die as they use their Naginata which is the spear Japan uses.
I suppose having to resort to your sidearm while the enemy still has his longer reach weapon does make you feel that way.
So glad they didn't turn this movie into another white savior movie. In the end Nathan was just an observer and a messenger who couldn't save the Samurai but made friends along the way and learned to live their way of life.
He was also a drunk with severe PTSD that wished for death, but it was the samurai that allowed him to find piece and have his first untroubled sleep in years. White savior my ass. He was the one that was saved.
