I love seasoned Belarus-USSR pilots. All three (maybe four) pilots in the cockpit had a function and they worked well as a team... from Pennsylvania USA
To control this aircraft is easier than by any Airbus or Boeing and can be controlled by the joystick instead of control column. It is fully equipped aircraft by the hydraulic, electrical or any other systems with the 3-4 time duplication. But the philosophy of soviet aircraft is different - their control column is additionally equipped by the Control Column's Flight Loaders. It is required for the pilot's feeling, that he is controlling by the big (190 tons in this case) aircraft and not by the acrobatic airplane. It is called Muscle's Memory and considered, that only the brain activity is not enough for the correct actions. This aircraft was constructed for the army - air forces. Can fly in any type of airfields, including the soiled airfield (not runways). Due to this reason sometimes can be appeared the time shortage for the correct decisions. This aircraft has the separated controlling systems for the control columns - in case of wedging of one side of controlling i.e. one control column, the other pilot can overload other control column for 30 Kg and start to control independently.
Fly by wire, literally. Muscles, pulling and pushing the flight controls, through cables. The best for me though, was the Russian avionics: that warning bell. Which is... AN ACTUAL METAL BELL, being struck by a hammer.
I think the co pilot is just mirroring or lightly placing hands on yoke. It's a higher danger situation he's ready to take over immediately if needed. Or it's a crazy plane with heavy yoke and he is adding a bit more pressure to aid pilot. Kinda seems like it handles like a bus.
IL-76 has very little hydraulic assist. It's flies like a B737 with both hydraulic systems inoperative/manual reversion mode. Yoke is still mechanically connected to the control surfaces via cables.
Best RUclips flying video I have ever seen. I want more. I have Learned more about Russian aviation in 3 min than I have learned in the past 5 years. Thank You
When flying Aeroflot in 1990s on their TU154 and 134, and while sitting on the first rows near the cockpit door, you could hear that bicycle-like alarm while flying above the outer and middle marker. I thought we were going to crash. .... Thanks for sharing. Great craftsmanship.
Looked like he was fighting some clear air turbulence as he approached the airport, buffeting the aircraft. Crazy yoke inputs to keep it level and right altitude/bearing. Thought it would be much faster though.
What a fantastic video. I truly enjoyed this. We need more if this. I had so much of excitement while watching this. Thanks so much The screams if the IL76 is just fantastic.
Not exactly the most responsive aircraft around. Several hours wrestling one of those beasts around the sky would wear me out. The teamwork required to land one of those in a bad crosswind must be phenomenal. The Il-76 is one of my favorite Russian aircraft and I have tremendous respect for the crews that fly them.
Now that's CRM, one pilot for the pitch, one pilot for the roll, one pilot for left ruddder, one pilot for right rudder, one pilot for throttle, one for the rdo! And Davai!!!!! Kiss from Moscow!
1:20 the bell says AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! in morse. (Wait, is that actually some kind of ancient beacon system that cancels out when you're in the right spot?)
In Belarus they farm special three-hand second pilots to control more instruments. They say four-hand pilot programe to answer phone as well is in progress .
The inputs aren’t much different than those required of most large aircraft on approach to keep everything on the straight and narrow. The control surfaces are less effective at lower speeds, so movements are always exaggerated. As airspeed rises, required input would be progressively less drastic.
That captain earns his pay like driving an old American car lots of play in the steering wheel lol i can't imagine a 10 hour flight you wouldn't want to arm wrestle this fellow lol
What a lot of work with the yokes! that's really what means to be a pilot. 4 hands always on yokes and one more on throttle, and i think the captain could do that with his right foot if necessary :)
Amazing..real flying. Also must be weird having the flight engineer manipulate the throttles and just conveying commands to them saying ok going up more thrust!..but they would be used to it so probably not weird for them at all.
Holy Schitt! The hysteresis (delay between action and reaction) and all that weight - absolutely incredible teamwork between the 3 Pilots.

That actually looks very hard to control, damn.
Someone answer that damn phone please! :)
I hate it when people keep calling you when you’re trying to land a damn plane!
It's not fly by wires it's fly by muscles 🤣😂
Ground effect can be a beast to handle, especially with some gusts from the side.
Quite an amazing job.

Boeing planning a one-pilot cockpit.
Soviet Ilyushin: Hold my throttle quadrant
That was no yoke there. Yoking. I've directed and towed these bad boys. Lot of respect for these pilots and crew.
I don't know why, but the ringing sound is just satisfying...
Aircraft was rock solid yet the yoke was all over the place!! Great vid!!
It is amazing how the two pilots can move in sync
I have never seen such large and continuous control inputs. I'm knackered just watching it.
The guys can fly!
Watching the hands of the two operators looked almost as if there was a mirror to the right of the pilot. Now that's cooperation! and training.

Probably one of the best Russian planes I ever saw in my life, such a beauty
look how they are coordinated and synchronized
That's true hand flying!
This are REAL PILOTS that can fly
So much input to the controls just to make it look easy, real flying!
Oh! Captain, that’s very hard to control the ll-76, good for muscles and focus , love it, Thank for sharing this amazing video
Really hard work and a workout for the pilots as well!
Any exterior video of this pass? Looks amazin
Well done! Great work, captain! Thank you and good luck!
best low pass video
That’s some serious skills!
Loved the bodgy wiring loom running down the side window frame. Scary stuff.....
So who's the pilot flying?
Yes.
True stick & rudder!!! Thank you for this!!
Don't get in a fight with that pilot, he works out every day!
“Phones ringin’ Dude”. “Thank you Donnie”.
For all of you youngsters out there, this is called “Hand Flying”
Ilyushin Il-76 TD/ Илью́шин Ил-76 TD: What separates the men from the boys.
Fine adjustment is great. It's a professional job.
Politbyuro is ringing
This is one pilot that doesn't need a gym workout. He does that at the controls of this IL76!!
Looked like he was fighting some clear air turbulence as he approached the airport, buffeting the aircraft. Crazy yoke inputs to keep it level and right altitude/bearing. Thought it would be much faster though.
his watch is extremely cool!
Nice work. Intense concentration. Great teamwork.
Bl**dy hell! That looks like hard work. Are the ailerons and elevators connected to the control column by rubber bands?? ;)
What a fantastic video. I truly enjoyed this. We need more if this. I had so much of excitement while watching this. Thanks so much
The screams if the IL76 is just fantastic.
Flying that aiprlane is a real work out.
Two hands on the yoke reminds me of flying the DC8 at certain times. Never needed the first officer to help though.
These guys know how to fly! It differs from pilots of passenger liners who can only hold on to the joystick.
beautiful sound!!
Thats probably the most beautiful looking aircraft yoke after 787's
Must feel really good with that rubber
Reminds me of driving a car without power steering. All good, enjoyed those days.

This is the joy of real flight there is a whole to of Zen touching down...

Kiss from Moscow!

It's built like a steakhouse, but it handles like a bistro.
I like IL-76 a lot.
Someone rightly said that Russian Pilots are crazy.
Excellent demonstration of experience and expertise.
I love it that they have a 3rd pilot in the middle to control the throttle! What a team!
That reminds me of driving a U-Haul through the Smokies.
The very definition of hand flying , more manual flying there than a 20 ,000 hours career in the western world,
Amazing and really had to work for it.
You can see the power steering system working in the right-hand seat and the actuator of the autothrottle in the middle 😆
That steering wheel reminds me of my old Morris 1000.
Cool piece of flying
Wow very impressive!
Do those flight controls actually do anything?! All joking aside, they seem incredibly heavy and slow to respond.
Dame good job!!!!!!!!!
Talk about slow reaction times. That's about as responsive as a ship in rough waters.
What a beast
What a workout.
Im amazed that there is only 3 flying that crazy plane ,I think they need 3 more
In Belarus they farm special three-hand second pilots to control more instruments. They say four-hand pilot programe to answer phone as well is in progress .
the pilot face look like my father when he angry during i play the fsx on school day hehehe
And a third guy there serving as auto throttle. Hahaha
Mountains and Valleys don't meet, but people do. -Kolya 2019
And without a harness! Impressive!
Guy in the middle makes throttle changes and makes coffee at the same time.
I love the old birds that you have to muscle to fly, 707, 727, il-76, they were way more hands on.
The inputs aren’t much different than those required of most large aircraft on approach to keep everything on the straight and narrow. The control surfaces are less effective at lower speeds, so movements are always exaggerated. As airspeed rises, required input would be progressively less drastic.
Real pilot ‼️
Flown by pure muscle, hell yeah...
Wow that thing handles like a supertanker.
it's like driving without a power steering lol
This is nice! That is a rare ecperience!
That was fantastic :)
"Planet fitness" in Belarus and Russia ...
What a beast!
I think someone needs to adjust (tighten) those Yoke cables! A real mans plane! ;-)
All I see is year 1955.
And old phones ringing.
This is Impressive.. Thanks for sharing.
Seems like my old grandpa beetle, sounds like my old grandma phone rings
That captain earns his pay like driving an old American car lots of play in the steering wheel lol i can't imagine a 10 hour flight you wouldn't want to arm wrestle this fellow lol

I already understood the need for fans in Russian aircraft.
The times he pushed the wheel so far when at just 50ft above the runway were chilling, if not traumatic.
Goodness. Are those yokes connected to anything???
Amazing..real flying. Also must be weird having the flight engineer manipulate the throttles and just conveying commands to them saying ok going up more thrust!..but they would be used to it so probably not weird for them at all.
it's like they put a quarter into the machine to play synchronized piloting.
