    I love my base 15in Air. I have always upgraded my laptops in the past to at least 16gb of ram and a 512gb ssd, but for me the value proposition fell apart as soon as I added one or both of those features. Might as well as just buy the 14in pro! I must say that in my use, I have not noticed it one bit. The 256gb is plenty enough storage, and I simply utilize cloud storage or an external SSD for large files. Plus, it's not like paying the extra $200 for the 512 version is getting you out of the "storage problem" regardless. Again, if you are a power user, the fan-less design isn't for you anyway. Go for the pro. But for light to medium use, (I am a writer by trade) the base spec is the only one that makes real sense imo. Coming from a PC, Mac os does a great job at keeping the system feeling snappy and I don't notice any different coming from my PC with 16gb of RAM!

You have come a long way, with this said I wanted to ask you Andres if you could make a video about the best way to set up an ipad as a secondary development machine and it's capabilities and limitations when it comes to dev work. Because my brain is in a crisis recently if whether i should get an ipad or a MacBook, the ipad checks all the boxes of my requirements except the development experience, i know it's possible to do dev work on it but how much is my question

    as a person who's writing this on my 13 inch m2 MacBook Air, I got to get my hands on the 15 inch one this week. I recommend the 15 inch one. What I love about my 13 inch one is that it is so light and portable that I bring it pretty much anywhere. So I thought the 15 inch will sacrifice the portability. But dang, I was wrong. The added weight on the 15 inch is so slight that you don't feel it at all and it doesn't affect the portability by any means.

    so I wanted to upgrade my m1 MacBook Air, and I needed to work on 3D modelling and coding quite a bit. I was torn between the 15 inch air 24gb ram and 512 gb storage vs the base 14 inch pro.
    Decided to go for the pro for the following reasons
    1) more cores present on the pro (better for modelling)
    2) no point in spending extra on 24 gb ram when probably won't even need it
    3) the 14 inch is more portable (inspite of being heavier) because most bags can't fit the length of the 15 inch air
    4) I also work a lot on photo editing, and the display on the 14 inch pro is just better
    5) for a hundred bucks extra why not
    6) resale value of a base model 14 inch pro > resale value of a similarly priced MacBook Air because apple doesn't give you extra resale for upgraded specs

  • @nblaise21
    @nblaise21 Месяц назад +2

    My use case is 90% writing and reading, multitasking with documents, 5% light photo/video editing and editing HTML/CSS, and 5% light gaming (think retro games, 2D, indie), so the larger display, the fanless design (absolutely amazing for use in bed, writing, not worrying that much about dust), the batter life (it can last a day and a half of use on average), and the portability made it an obvious choice, I got the 16 GB RAM model with 512 GB of storage.
    I don't think I'd need the MacBook Pro base model for my use case and I didn't like the design as much. Also, great point about readability and DPI, which is something I never even thought of. It's much crisper than my previous HP Envy Windows laptop and I don't reach for my reading glasses as much anymore.

Really wanted the air as its a little bit lighter but I use my macbook 100% for editing Video and experienced with my former 13“ air sometimes some performance drops. So in the end I am happy with my choice and I found a good deal on Amazon which made my Pro just 350€ more expensive than a similar specked Air. Have a great Sunday and cheers from Germany.

      For anyone else interested - I've compared pricing between a Refurbished 15" Air (yes, they're on the Refurb store now!), 24GB memory, 1TB SSD.
      In the UK, this comes as £1,869 (£160 off even the Uni Student pricing!).
      There aren't any listed at this at the moment, but I can see that this is the price, thanks to Refurb-Tracker website.
      It also shows 14" M1 Pro (8C CPU/14C GPU), 32GB, 1TB for £1,929 - only £60 more than the Air 15" Refurb above. I think I'll go for this one - again, I'm using the Refurb-Tracker website so I'll keep an eye out for this, and update here if I'm successful with either!

The size is just massively different. Also the Air really looks like what all the future MacBook's should look like. It is so tin and light. Also in my country the Air 8GB/512GB SSD is 3699 BGN compared to 4770BGN for the base MBP 14" M2 which is like 550 EUR more expensive. Only thing I really will miss is the 120Hz Refresh Rate on the Pro but then again, if you are using it everyday and not compare it to 120Hz screen you will even not notice it.

      You made a good choice, macOS animations are twice as slow on 120Hz panels for some reason , 60Hz ironically smoother (120Hz still smoother for scrolling)

    I know that m2 pro 14" is just a different beast and most recommended because of chassis, built, fan, performance, inputs and so on but I chose 13" m2 air because its just 1k cheaper than that and felt like its just overkill for me as a web developer. Maybe I will upgrade to 14" pro someday with maxed specs if I ever need that but m2 air with 16gb is just enough for me.

    The thing that kind of annoys me about these new Macbook Airs is that Apple treats them like a budget device... just because I want a thin, fanless laptop doesnt mean I also dont want a 120hz oled display, 4 usb-c ports and a micro sd card slot... I want a PREMIUM version of the Air, sure it will be less powerful than a macbook pro but power isnt the only concern.

  • @Obikenobi93HD
    @Obikenobi93HD Год назад +1

    I got myself the 15 Air with 24GB RAM and 256 SSD, the reason why I went with the configuration is cause I use a gaming monitor as a 2nd Monitor display which can use significant energy when I have 2 windows open on an browser so that extra RAM is very useful and there is NO alternatives for extra ram while I do have a 5TB external hard drive which there is many alternatives and having a bigger screen on the MacBook Air for less then 2000 bucks is just insane value. I was thinking at a Pro version at first but just to have the 14 M2 Pro is already 2000 bucks + tax and I don’t really need the HDMI port since I already have a USB Hub, overall I love the portability of the MacBook Air 15 and upgrading it from my Intel 2020 MacBook Air is a huge Win for me! Especially adding the Educational Pricing Discount! 👍

    What if its 8GB of ram and not 16GB? Is it going to be a big difference or just a bit slower?
    In most cases people use it for web browsing and few other programs like figma, photoshop, visual studio... Is 8GB of ram enough for that?

    • @cjdodson5700
      @cjdodson5700 7 дней назад

      1000% 8GB is enough for 95% of people i'm telling you. Apple uses unified memory and does a really good job of making it seamless. 8GB Memory in a Macbook is completely different then 8gb RAM on an older windows device.

    I have a 2015 macbook air with a pretty sad dual core i5. Since Apple no longer supports this, I just put Windows 10 on it to use it for web browsing and a security camera server. It actually feels pretty 'snappy'. I will say will be our last Mac computer since Apple claims to be a 'green' company but discontinues support after 5-7 years to force consumers to buy the latest and greatest. I am aware there are 'workarounds' to put the latest Mac OS on it and from what I've seen, older Intel based Macs run JUST FINE with it. There is no other reason for Apple not supporting this hardware, other than greed.

    Here the prices on the Apple products are insane.
    The MBP(16") M2 Max is 5000$ here, 3500$ in the US.
    Same config just in the 14" size is 4400$ here, 3100$ in the US.
    Because of import, weak currency and insanely high tax (27%).
    We are talking about Hungary.
    A round trip ticket to NYC is about 485 USD. Do the math.

  • @cartorius
    @cartorius 7 месяцев назад

    honestly, you made the right call upgrading, but once are in the price point of a Mpro chip the MBP starts to make more sense. it comes base with 18 gigs of ram for one, and the fans will really help cool down the CPU under heavy load. you had thermal throttling when you added the 4k monitor or edited in 4k, so that would be the use case that seems to really push someone into a MBP vs a air. thanks for the video! I'm interested in picking up a 15inch air once the M3 chip drops into them so I'm glad to see it will work out for what I'll use it for.

    Your videos are amazingly well done! Great explanation of your experience with the new M2 15" Air. I still prefer my 13", but would be lying if I claimed I wasn't tempted to try the 15". Maybe I'll give it a shot when the Air gets the M4 or M5. Agreed on avoiding the base configuration, at least for RAM. I always get a minimum of 16GB for any laptop. I've got a couple of 1TB flash drives if more storage is needed. Oh, a suggestion for mobile audio with your Air -- iLoud Micro Monitors. They punch way above their weight class for such little guys. They make my Air a sweet little entertainment system on the road.

    Hey thank you so much for this video, it has been crazy helpful but I'd like to ask u a question personally if u have the time to respond. I am choosing between an amazon renewed m1 pro 14in and apple refurbished m2 air 15in for college. At this point, they are both the same price. I will be doing anything from normal work study to pretty intensive creative work (possibly even 3d rendering). I have a 240hz external display I wanna hook up to the laptop w/keyboard, mouse, and mic. For my day to day, away from my setup and hooked up to it, which laptop do u think will last longer and provide the most gratifying experience? Also, will the m2 air with no fan prove harmful to the laptop over long work sessions w/my setup and continuous use over 4 years? Thanks!
