MRE COMPARISON 33 Year Old vs New MRE.....Any Improvements?

- We compare 2 Pork MREs to see if the new or old one is better. The sides include cheese, jelly, trail mix, applesauce, sliced cranberries, 33 year old Tootsie Roll, and 2 orange drinks, and other items. It's fun to see how the menus have changed over the last 30 plus years.
Thanks to Steve from Rusty's Surplus for the older MRE!!
Link to his channel here: / @rustysurplus
The fact that some of these “older” MREs are holding up, incredible. Thanks again for sharing this adventure. God Bless
Eric, it really is, isn't it? TFW, as always.
I'd tuck into both meals, except the cranberries. Being on blood thinner, means avoiding certain foods that interfere with the med, such as cranberries. Everything else looks good. 😎👍
Yeah, cranberries are known to interfere with a lot of medications unfortunately. There are worse things though, I am not aware that too many people crave cranberries.
I had no idea that cranberries interfered with medications. TFW, Lance!
Great Job as always on your reviews and keep up them coming 🥨🙈
We'll surely try, Mark. TFW!
It occurs to me that you could probably find some C Ration reproductions. That could make for a fun video; although I have no idea how expensive it can be.
Regardless, nice video. I'm surprised the food was still good after 30 years. I guess good storage can do miracles. Sadly, miracles couldn't save that tootsie roll. I would also like to say that I got into eating trail mix thanks to your videos, so thanks for that.
That trail mix was good! TFW!
Have you ever try the early 80s pork paddy. I was in Korea in 1984 we had the pork paddy. You could resolve your shoe. We had so many left over and donated it to the orphanage. The asked us not to donate anymore because the kids wouldn't eat them. 😅
Stay tuned for that pork Pattie.......I just bought a case of old early 1980s MREs.....reviews coming soon! TFW, Sherry
You pray but then you lie about other things. Not good fella.
Same as ya son ace. Doesn't upload anymore cause obviously got enough $$.angry.😡😡
I love the new format with your side by side comparison.
Thanks for that and TFW!
Love the videos. Thanks for your service to our great country!God bless!
My pleasure! I'm happy you are enjoying the videos. I sure enjoy making them. TFW
The new MRE seems like a "peace time" meal, less sugar and more taste, but the old one is a sugary quick energy wartime meal, when you need a quick energy boost and you are in active duty, that is the impression I take from it. Great video, as always.
Great observation! TFW
It could also be the trend of the nuts are there to keep you fuller longer than just having a bunch of sweet stuff while out in the field.
@@wolly875 Fair point, Portuguese MREs or soldier supplies have used dried or salted nuts for, well, centuries...
Really enjoing the side by side comparisons you've been doing lately.
Jacob, I'm really enjoying making them. TFW!
I feel like US MREs are mostlly snack foods. The main is proper food but the rest is just munchies to up the calorie count. .No pasta with the sausage? Maybe they should skip some of the nuts and give you some pasta.
I like that idea! TFW, Joseph.
Great comparison. You have a knack of explaining the taste of each item so well I can almost taste and smell it. I wasn't surprised to much about the condition of the Tootsie Roll even though it supposedly stays good for decades. The trail mix idea is epic, sweet and salty. I left a small bag of trail mix in my Bunker coat (FD), and spent 15 mins. in a house fire. The chocolate melted with the nuts and cranberries but they were in a Ziploc and it survived. So I stuck it in the freezer. Home made candy bar! It was good. Anyways, great video👍🏻
Great story about the 'candy bar,' Mike! TFW!
Is it me or does the toilet paper a joke? Lol
It was really important for us when we were on patrols and in the field......TFW!
And Im worried about two cases marked 2018, 🍻
ha ha ha! If they've been stored properly, would be my guess. TFW!
Now that I think about it and heard you say it Your Not Ancient, You have lots of Knowledgement. I wonder how my Dad liked or disliked these when he couldn't cook for himself/others when he was alive? I think when I watch your videos, I'm listening to my dad's opinions on the same even though it's your voice. You and my Dad are straight shooters, sort of speak. He was strict, but he had lots of compassion even though I lived with my mother I saw him every weekend. He was from the old school, man do I miss him very much.. Thanks again for your Dedication & Service to our country, and for your son to help make these great RUclips videos...👍👍👏👏🙏🙏
Kenneth, it's good to have you on board. I'm happy to know you have good memories of your father.. TFW!
Excellent comparison again. Got excited when I saw a new video posed, great on a rainy afternoon. Great job!!
Michael, thank you for those kind words and TFW!
A friend of mine in the Army, brings me a case of MRE's they have left over for my hunting trips. These Rock!
Man, that is a real friend! TFW
@@MeAncient true that!!!
Hello Me Ancient. Another great video, they always make me smile and put me in a good mood! All the best from Scotland
Gach dùrachd back atcha, Gillian! TFW
Hello Mr Me Ancient!
I just stumbled upon your RUclips channel last week, and now a subscriber. First off I would like to say thank you for your service in the Marine corps, I also would like to say thank you for praying before each meal God knows that this country can definitely use a good prayer.
I was wondering if you had any recommendations for some MREs? I'm going on a camping trip come June and I want to pack light but I want something that's going to make a good impact come lunch or dinner time, keep up the great work fellow subscriber- Mike

Ya! TFW
I just discovered your channel a few days ago and I love your videos! My grandpa passed away in 2019 and just something about the way you talk and smile reminds me so much of him. Your videos bring such a comfort to me 🤍
Sydney, it's great to be a small part of good memories for you. I appreciate your kind words and TFW!
It's incredible how some of these MREs can be stored for decades and still be edible for the most part. I'd be hesitant to try certain dishes judging by the look of them
yes it is. It seems like tomato based dishes have less likelihood to make the years journey and still be edible. TFW!
Good video as always chief !!! How’s the side business besides RUclips lol have fun
Ryan
Ryan, side hustle going great! I'm enjoying my work now more than ever. TFW!
That is not a meal. Fruit and nuts. Cheese and crakers are snacks. How are you expected to feel healthy and energized on that.
I think calories are the main concern, about 1300 per MRE. Variety comes in a distant second. TFW, you Dawg fan, you!
Cool comparison, cool cup! The new version, I have tried twice in the last year, and enjoyed greatly. The older meal, held up better than I expected. It had to have been stored well. Nicely done as always. Peace from Ky. , John. Stay safe Bro.
John, storing well is the key, me thinks. TFW!
I love this guy man reminds me of my grandpa watched all his videos..
I like reminding people of their grandpa. I'm one, ten times over. TFW!
Gooood evening from central Florida! Hope everyone has a great night!
Good evening to you, David. I trust you have a great evening as well. TFW!
Always enjoyable Sir Ancient
You are too kind! TFW!
great videos i have tried C rations only good thing that i had was the peanut butter and type 1 coffee
James, yes indeed....the mains in cans did NOT make the time trip well, for sure. TFW!
Looks like you’re losing weight? MRE diet? 😂
Great question.....ha ha ! TFW
Been missing you Marine! I’ve already gone back and watched every one of your videos, now I’m in withdrawal! Been really hooked on your presentations, well done! Pump some more out, I was real happy to see this one show up in my feed today.
The only time we got C-Rats in 1971-72 onboard the USS Oriskany (CVA-34) was when we went to General Quarters while in the Tonkin Gulf off the coast of Vietnam. They were downright NASTY mostly because we had no way to heat them, and my biggest memory was all the old grease on top of the beef stew, spaghetti, or whatever you got, paired with hot grapefruit juice it and was disgusting. Senior Chief, USN (Retired).
Senior Chief, I know EXACTLY what you mean about a C Rat with no heat. Some of those tomato based menus could be tough to eat. Real hunger had to set in before proceeding with some of those. I always enjoyed the ham and eggs though - cold or warmed. It's great to know you are out there! Semper Fi and TFW!
Another great mre comparison video, thanks Me Ancient 🙂
My pleasure, as always, Srijan. And, as always, TFW!
Goes to show how much more health conscious the menu has changed over the years.
Lauren, they sure have. Sometime for the better, and sometimes, well........TFW!
Great video, I’m a big fan of trail mix myself!
I always have trail mix with me, whether flying, fishing, or camping. TFW, as always!
Oh man that apple sauce looks like baby food. I kind of doubt the old mre. I mean 33 years is pushing the limit before everything breaks down. I do not think you should try anything much older than that.
Thanks again for another great video.
My pleasure and TFW, Todd
18:17 amalgum - a mixture or blend.
This is a very educated man here. I appreciate hearing words that have long slipped from my vocabulary. Great video as always ❤
I'm old, so maybe that has something to do with it....... ;-) TFW!
Ive had the sausage one and found it tasty, but it tore my guts up.
Another very enjoyable MRE review. I really look forward to your posts, Me Ancient. Looking at that Tootsie Roll, it looks exactly as I remember getting them in the same type of wrapper, when I was a kid. My brother and I always thought the same thing, it was about two of those sections short. I seem to remember, that the candy had a total of 4 or 5 of those little sections, per package. They were always one of my favorites. Great to see Asa with you again. I've been watching quite a few of Michas' videos lately as well. Keep 'em coming guys!! God bless.
Good memories with those Tootsie Roll. TFW!
What is your most favourite MRE?
Probably an international one, but I'd have to go back and see my reviews to pick a specific one. The problem for picking a favorite is that I like most every kind of food, and if I'm hungry at the time of eating, it's usually my 'favorite.' TFW!
@@MeAncientfair enough :-) should do a few uk v USA MREs I think would be good :)
What was your all-time favorite MRE? Which country has the best MREs overall? Maybe the military should hire you to design a new series of MREs. If so, what would your ideal MRE include?
If we get past the woke Biden administration, perhaps you could have them print : PRAY BEFORE YOU EAT on each package. 😁😁😁
Robert, I think one of the international MREs would rank among my favorite MRE, for sure. I'd have to go back and watch my reviews 'cause I can't keep them all in my mind to give you an answer. TFW!
I remember pork, rice , with bbq sauce! It was less than ok! I was in 88-95We had the El Paso with us in 91. Along with the Sumter, Ponce, and USS Wasp! 26thMEU
Cool! Was that Desert Storm? TFW, Michael!
Love love love when our man Me Ancient uploads a banger for us . Keep up the great work !!
Thanks for those kind words, Travis. TFW!
Another great video!! Always makes me hungry!! On the Sub, in the '80s, we mixed coffee and packs of coco and made moca Java. vr, S
Shannon, I didn't start drinking coffee until I'd been out about 20 years. As a result, I really had no idea of what was going on in the java world before then. Heck, I barely have any knowledge of coffee now since I only drink it black.....TFW, as always!
New MRE's are always a treat to see on your channel kudos
Glad you like them! TFW!
great video as for mixing the coco and coffee we use to do it all the time in the Army i was in from 1975-1985 so i only got the early MREs personnly hated them though i have tried the new ones now and there great thank you again for the great videos SIMPER FI
Thanks for letting me know about that. I didn't start drinking coffee till I was in my 40s.......TFW!
first
Indeed you are, Joey! TFW!
8:10 interesting picture of how far food industry and its technologies developed since 20th century. Less components but tastes similar. Powdered drinks production got more efficient over the years!(but its taste is controversial.)
My wife believes they used artificial sweetener on the new MRE powdered orange drink and regular granulated sugar on the one from 1991. I think she is right.
The older MRE drink powder has sugar in it. The new drink mix has artificial sweetener that can be bad for your health down the road.,
Sugar vs fake sugar. The conversation continues........TFW, Gerald.
6:44 Probably you ate Canned MCIs instead of MREs i suppose. MCI were instructed to heat the food by heat the can itself on fire, MRE had flameless ration heater activated on water as far as i remember. heating MRE components on fire prob burn em all out 😢
We would use our canteen cups when heating MREs with an open flame. TFW!
Another good vid man! When they refer to "a bottle" of water it typically means a 500ml bottle! Most powder drinks in British rations are for half liter, 500 ml bottles!
We are moving to more of that here in the USA as well. TFW, Ian
Both of those mres looked good.
It still surprises me that an mre that old is still edible.
Its a lot of fun to see the old, new comparisons.
Great review. :)
Christine, I thought the same thing. Thanks for catching up!
I had a civilian MRE with military components in the mid 90s, ate all of it cold and enjoyed all of it, but if I wanted it hot I would have heated it up in a standard mess kit. two mains I miss was chili Con carne, and Red beans and rice.
Heated MREs are the only way to go. I understand why they added the heaters. TFW
Mamma mia! An italian mre!😊 great video as always ...I need to open the few mres I've saved
You should try them out, Eltenda. TFW, as always!
1:47 while serving did you see anybody open their cheese packet with pocket knife so they get even/full squeeze instead of the tear away not so appetizing result.
Not that I recall. However, that was over 40 years ago.........TFW!
If I just came by:
If you ask what would you would pick. 33 year old food or the new
Old one 😂 looks better.
There you go, Brittany.....TFW!
Do you think that with the old vs new, despite the age, that they were created for the environments that the conflict was in? the new 1 had coffee and a beverage base powder which seems to me that be great for the desert terrain. just a guess, but regardless keep up the awesome videos my friend.
Could be......
You know your site is good if my 8yo son is excited to watch when I put one of your videos on. Well done on the great content.
Wayne, that is a kind word to pass on. I appreciate that. I have an eight year old grandson. TFW and tell him hello from me. TFW

Love you videos reminds me spending time in Australia army reserve as a medic for 7 years lot good stories not bad food not good either 😂😂 take care.
Funny how hunger helps to flavor food.....TFW!
Me Ancient THANK you so much for the shout out. That old MRE was from Desert Storm Yummm 🤣
I hope some more folks get to enjoy your videos, Steve. Thank you again for sharing the MRE. It was surprisingly good. As always, TFW!
@@MeAncient You Bet
the gum isn't in there for the flavor it has a laxative in it as well remember MRE meal refusing to exit
Jeffrey, that's a new one on me but I don't doubt it. The 'flavor' only lasts about 3 minutes. TFW
Thank you for sharing this with me and I hope that you are doing well
Doing better than I deserve, for sure. TFW, Felisa!
ME was tasters choice what you had in your MREs when you were active duty?
I don't recall any brand of coffee on either the C Rats or first generation MREs I had in the early '80s. TFW
👍
Tks, Michael!
Good comparison, took me back I joined up in May 92 at the age of 17. How young were we lol 😂 I’ve had one of those dark brown pack MREs I think I had sliced ham as a main. It was alright and in date but that was very early 90s. Keep up the good work Lynn. Semper Fi. 🇬🇧🫡🇺🇸
Marcus, so you're still a young man! That's great that you had a US MRE back in the day. As I have mentioned, I was in on the first generation MREs.....I had my favorites, but I liked them all. More of the ones you sent will be featured in a video, hopefully this Spring. I'm out of the country right now and didn't want to risk taking my international MREs into another country and have Customs take them for any reason. Semper Fi, my friend. As always, TFW!

Also, I just wanted to express my sincere gratitude for your service. Your videos have been incredibly motivating and have given me a deeper appreciation for the sacrifices made by our veterans.
Thank you for your time, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you for your valuable advice. I'll make sure to follow orders in boot camp and be mindful of the company I keep.@@MeAncient
Its too bad the mre meals dont come with a toy such as a tampon , condum , or an incontinence diaper

My Director of trading was army airborne and he was my trainer to prison, and he told me because he did two terms at Vietnam, and one was recon And I think the second term was recon. Also, he told me I had sometimes they would break off a little piece of C4 and light it and it would burn so hot. It would boil water and they used to cook there.sea rats at the time and heat up there cans of food.
Now that's some heat! I've never heard of using C4 for heating up your food. Adapt and improvise!!! TFW
@@MeAncient yes he would use like a little piece size and it would burn for a while and they just sat there canteen mugs on rack and heat up their rations and coffee
Still never try heating the peanut butter and cheese
I may try heating the cheese, but not the p.b. TFW
Put some water on cranberry to plump!
Good idea. TFW
What the hell?!? I never got a tootsie roll!!!
