I'd rather have your opinion than that of the 'professional' movie review establishments, who are paid to give substandard films a favourable review. It's your integrity and the relaxing quality of your videos that made me subscribe in the first place. Thanks very much. As far as I'm concerned, you're doing a grand job.

Lots of great picks! Tar I think is the best movie of 2022. First Man’s space/launch scenes are some of the most awesome things I’ve experienced in a theater.
As for The Shining, I’m in the group that’s underwhelmed by it. I’m not that young (late 30s), but I didn’t see it until I was an adult, so I have no nostalgia for it. For me it just wasn’t scary, nor did I find the characters interesting and also I was confused by it-was it a ghost hotel or is the guy just crazy or what. However! Enough people I trust have recommended it that I’ll give it another chance. Maybe it will improve on second viewing.

First Man has the most intense representation of the amount of force the various crafts shown experience while operating that exists. Gosling was brilliant at conveying the trepidation that every creak would instill. I felt like I was in the ship fr. It was also a good movie aside from the awesome space ship porn, I have no idea how anyone could have a problem with it.

The beauty of movies is that people aren't going to like the same things. In so many ways, we bring our lives and perspective on life and art into a viewing - it's impossible for everyone to agree.
What I hate is when people dislike a movie others love yet get all high and mighty about it, as if their thoughts on the film are the one and only truth and try to belittle anyone that loved it.
If people are enjoying a film then that's great for them!

Fun list. I did see Tar and thought it was a fantastic picture, especially with how topical cancel culture is these days. I also saw Sea of Trees and I don't remember it much except that I did think it was a bit of a slog. I found it because they filmed a portion of the movie in Ashland State Forest which is in my hometown.
Movies I love that are hated?
Hudson Hawk - I love this movie. It's just fun and light and doesn't take itself seriously at all. Danny Aiello and Bruce Willis really work together.
Three Stooges (2012) - Another lite and fun movie that is a great take on the original Stooges. Plus, Larry David as a nun was a stroke of brilliance.
Way of the Gun - Tarantino-esque movie that got very mixed reviews. I thought the story was compelling and the characters were really enjoyable. I mean... Benicio Del Toro and James Caan... c'mon!
Payback - I don't know if it is hated, but it is overlooked and I have seen people say it was dumb, but to me, this is the perfect kinda movie. Fun characters, the simple premise with a dash of oddball, and a nice payoff.
Freejack - Yeh, it's preposterous and Mick Jagger's performance is laughably horrible, but that is what makes this so fun. Plus, Anthony Hopkins grounds it.
Bodysnatchers (1993) - while it is not as iconic as either the 56 or 78 film, it is still a damn good take on the story. I didn't think they could go wrong with this "franchise" until Nicole Kidman's Invasion.
The Crush - it is sort of a low-budget thriller, but I enjoy it and love the ending on the horse carousel. Alicia Silverstone is totally believable as a psychotic teenager.
Hero (1992) - I like this little parable of a miserable guy becoming a hero. Most people probably didn't like the character, but I thought it was hilarious and they work Dustin Hoffman's transformation really well.
A Kiss Before Dying (1991) - Love this little thriller. Matt Dillon is scary as hell as the power-hungry boyfriend and it may be cheesy, but I love the reveal at the end.

The Shinning really was a huge disappointment to me. Sitting in the theater on opening night, the movie starts and in the first 15 minutes the MAIN, HERO is killed off and no hedge animals. I hated it and forever questioned why Stephen King let them to that to his vision. The acting was great the story got so twisted away from the book that I just have never been able to watch it again. The second making of it was not so well acted but at least the old man lived and rescued them which followed the book. Poor Stephen King has had several books made into movies that the directors ruined.

    • @jimthar17
      @jimthar17 4 месяца назад +1

Writers. Writers ruin movies not directors. Directors film what writers write. Unless that director is also a writer which is typically NOT the case though I know it is regarding Kubrick. Directors film a script that is given to them and already written by someone else. Writers ruin, directors direct.

Sam Elliot (I believe that’s his name, he’s the older man with THE mustache) took offense as did others with Campion’s portrayal of cowboys. I’m sure there were people who may have found the movie boring but I distinctly recall there being much more of an uproar about the homoeroctism applied to cowboys. "Babylon" for me was a very frustrating watch, I made a note (cos I'm a geek and not on Letterboxd) "There's a great movie in here somewhere but it's way too long, very annoying at times and generally all over the place". I think Margot Robbie is fantastic in it but her character goes too off the rails to maintain interest, I think Brad Pitt is also fantastic in it and I love his character's (very small) story in the movie. At 3hours 9mins there's a great 90mins movie in here somewhere but it's very poorly thought out and put together imo...worth a one time watch because of a few excellent elements (some of Margo Robbie's scenes and pretty much all of Brad Pitt's scenes...especially the walk up the hill for that awesome "shot") but I could never call it a good film and would never watch it again. I didn't like "Power of the Dog" at all but as you suggested, I (and the two people I watched it with) couldn't get through it, it was so dull, slow and I forget where we all agreed to turn it off but 30mins in sounds about right. "Barbie" I had a good (one time) watch with but I think for all the "wrong" reasons...for me (especially with a few drinks ;-) ) it was a movie that was so bad it was "good" but it really was bad imo. I thought the messaging was terrible on all sorts of levels but was done so ineptly that it came off as funny...but hey, we all have different tastes and different ways of looking at the World and if people liked it then all power to them. I would say that I'm not normally a fan of Ryan Gosling at all but I enjoyed his performance a lot and he gained my respect because he really lent into the role he was given and arguably (for a lot of people) stole the movie from Margot ! I also thought Simu Liu was quite good for the same reasons. Not a good movie at all but I had a (one off) good time watching it. "First Man" I saw at the cinema and I thought it was OK, it was no "Apollo 13" and again, not a Ryan Gosling fan but I thought he was OK in this, mainly because the character he played was "warts and all" and I enjoyed his performance...not a great movie but I enjoyed it enough as one time watch. "The Shining" is a strange one to see in this video as many people regard it as a classic, I'm not the biggest fan of it but I've got to say I've enjoyed it more with every watch and the last time I saw it I thought it was pretty good. There is something very unique and eerie about the way the hotel is filmed that makes it almost the star of the movie, with Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall being co-stars...it's not one of my favourites but it is a very good and very unique movie imo. I haven't seen any of the others in your list.

Sorry about your ear. Hopefully it's only a minor problem, like too much wax.
My movies nobody likes are Miracles (1986), and Zorro, the gay blade (1981) I'll defend them the end.

The Shining is the golden standard of horror. I think all of the parody over the years has to have diluted peoples' perceptions of it.

🤣🤣🤣 hi friend. I'm with you. I have every version of The Shining aside from laserdisc. I LOVE that movie so much and it's such a horror classic. I have no idea what started this weird trend of it being branded, boring. Bizarre.
Thanks so much for watching. #GenX

Despite no interest in Barbie I did like it. I don’t get the hate from conservatives
