You are amazing! I really appreciate you taking the time to teach dummies like me the functions of the camera. I purchased my 70D a week ago and I'm just so excited. Thanks again!
The buttons on my flash stopped working so I had to buy a new flash because it was stuck in manual mode at full strength. I was able to watch this video and adjust my settings through the 70D so I no longer needed to buy a new flash. You helped to save me $350 dollars. THANK YOU!
Great Video, I just boght speed light store salesperson told me 70D doesn't work for wireless speedlight/flash and they sold me trigger as well to make speed light to use as wireless...... but after seeing your video i took the same step for my camera settings and i am enjoying speedlight (as slave) and built-in as master. Thanks for the great tutorial.
I assume that there are only 17 videos for the EOS 70D training. In either case, excellent training!!! I enjoyed every video. My question, primarily because I was looking for the built in flash control, where do I find compatible lighting equipment or is it the classic, just take a look at the major players e.g. Calumet, Adorama, B&H Photo, etc? Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.
Wow, you watched the entire series! I sure hope it was worth your time :) For "compatible" lighting equipment it basically means most of Canon's original line of speedlite flashes, and these major camera stores will probably be your best bet at finding them, but any camera store that sells well, camera equipment will do haha
ZY Productions - Thanks for the prompt response. Yep! I watched all 17... Well... Technically, the customized section around videos 10 and 11 I think... Those were the only two where I watched half, but those were features I knew 100% that I was not going to use. I have actually been researching camera equipment for awhile but definitely in the last 2 days. I had already been researching cameras and had decided on the EOS 70D; so your training was exactly what I needed! Right now, I have decided on the Mettle 400w for the monolight flash gear lighting equipment. So, I am planning to order my 70D within the next 3 months. Note, I shoot video also and I want to go ahead and buy a new computer; so that is the reason for the delay. Thanks again for the feedback on where to go buy lighting equipment compatible with EOS 70D. I thought that I was going to have to only buy equipment graded for the E-TTLII platform, but it looks like any lighting equipment that can operate via wireless transmitter with slave sensors will work. Also, you should submit this training to Canon to see if they will either sponsor you or pay you as the training is that excellent. Good luck on your future projects.
I've got a 70D but the flash will no longer open, despite me clicking on the flash button on the left of the lens - and when I go to the second settings tab in the menu, there is no setting for flash control! This applies to all shooting modes. :(
Hi, Thanks for the great tutorials. Can you please tell me if a 430EX can fire fast enough with the 70D for bracketing of 5-7 exposures, or would I have to wait for the light to recharge? ( thinking about the H flash setting in your video) Thanks so much!
When I push the "ok" button like in 1:18 it do not appear the window with all settings for the flash, what can I do ? May I am doing something wrong ? Thanks
hi in your video 7:19 when you use pop up flash your shutter speed changes to 1/250. I want to learn how do I increase the shutter speed to 1/6000 or even more with external speedlite. I have pixel X650C speedlite.
Great video..Thanks...is there a way to control flash output level of 70D when triggering external flash since on board flash will effect picture exposure.
I like your videos and appreciate that you're taking the time to teach us newbies. But if I could make a suggestion, there are times that you go over stuff quickly and don't explain why or what the feature does or what it's for. I'm guessing it's just because you're so familiar with everything. I don't mean it as a criticism just asking if you could go into detail for everything please & sorry since it's probably ridiculously easy for you. This is my 1st slr camera. I had very early point & shoot from 2001 but the camera did pretty much everything. Again thanks making these videos.
hello, thank you for ur valuable contribution about 70d to all of us...personally, it helped me a lot...I learned a lot in two days wch I cudnt have myself for months even after reading d manuals. Neways, I wanted to ask you which canon flash will be good for my canon 70D (18-135mm lens)...and I was thinking of 430 ex ii, which many recommend for beginners as it has good range, easy to use and relatively faster sync dan other same range flashes. kindly gv ur opnion.... and lastly, it wud be helpful if u cud posts some vedios about wall-bounce flash photography. thank you.
Hi, many flashes work well with this camera. The 430EX II would be fine as a mid-range flash unit. However for long term investment you can consider an 600EX or you can consider third party flashes if you plan to do wireless flash/stobes. I will consider your feedback on making a video on flash lighting techniques.
Great training videos, thank you. My new EOS 70D arrived 4 days ago. I have been spending most of my spare time following the video tutorials in stop/start mode and finding my way around the camera. I attached my existing flashgun which is a Sigma EF-530 DG Super and it seems to work in ETTL mode, but I have a problem with the menu options (flash attached & also when removed from camera)....External Flash Function. setting & External Flash C.Fn Setting...It displays following message..... This menu cannot be displayed. Incompatible flash or flash's power is switched off. Can anyone help please? I cannot understand why this message is displayed when no flashgun is attached. Many thanks. Rob.
Robert Adlington The message you stated will appear if: - No flash is connected - flash is wrongly connected - flash is not compatible (3rd party flashes) In your case, I'd say the flash is not compatible with the in-camera interface because it is a 3rd party flash. The Canon in-camera flash interface basically will not work with anything other than an original Canon EX flash. Of course, Canon EX flashes are overpriced so if you are looking into a 3rd party flash, I recommend the non-ETTL ones with just a single firing pin (the "dumb" flashes) whereby you just change the flash output directly from the rear panel interface of the flash itself. I recommend the Yongnuo 560's, cheap and great.
Hi there, I am using the same camera and flash light but when i am using only external flashlight option my both built in flash and external flash fires. i just only want my external flash to fire. I am also using the same settings as yours. If you can advise how i can fix this it will be really appreciated.
Not sure if it's because of an update or something similar, but when I go to the 2nd folder I only get two options, "Lens aberration correction" and " red-eye reduc."....how can I change that?
Thank youuu for all these awesome tutorials. I am really interested in what you said about about the wireless flash. Do I need to purchase anything else besides the Speedlite 600 ex-rt and the Canon 70D that I have for off camera flash? You mentioned something about an IR beam? What is that? And if I do need to purchase it which one would you recommend? Also...I've been looking into buying other flashes to build up my kit but cheaper than the 600 ex-rt...any suggestions? One more thing (lol) do you have any videos on flash and/or using off camera flash? Thank you in advance.
Hello there! For the 600EX-RT to work with any camera, you must purchase a ST-E3 RF Transmitter unit. As far as I know, Canon has no cameras with integrated RF transmitters up till this point. As for the IR beam, quite a number of cameras have it, basically anything from the EOS 600D above, 60D, 70D, 7D all have built-in IR Speedlight transmitters integrated into the pop-up flash units. For cameras with no flash like the 5D's, 6D etc, you will need a ST-E2 transmitter. I have a few videos on wireless flashing, here are a few, do check them out when you have time ;) RF-603C Flash transceiver units: YongNuo RF-603C Flash Trigger Review Setting up wireless flash photography: How to set up Wireless Flash Photography
Does the 70D trigger flash in live view? I want to be able to use the face detection function and trigger flash at the same time. I heard that face detection is only available in live view.
So I can have the Canon ST-E3-RT transmitter on the 70D in live mode with face detection and when I hit the shutter button, all of my 600ex-rt should fire?
Before the camera fires, like if I press the fire button just a little, then it uses the flash to get an idea I guess. This light is blinding to people, I want to disable that. How?
hi, i bought YN-560 iv. however it doesn't work on camera/hot-shoe with my Canon 70D. When I attached 560 iv directly to the 70d, I got an error message saying the flash unit is not compatible with the camera... Any solution or need special setting?
Hi! Great video. But... I've got a Canon 70D and just bought a Yongnuo YN600EX-RT, and I can't eve make the flash fire on-camera! First issue, when I get in the External flash func. settings, I only have TTL and second-curtain sync options, no manual or E-TTL options available. And not only that, but when I try to access the External flash C.Fn settings, I get a message saying the flash is not compatible. What's wrong with my Canon 70D and/or my Yongnuo flash unit? Are they not compatible???
Well, I made the external flash work on-camera, but I can't find the way to make it work off-camera through this radio (not optical) stuff. Don't you happen to have a tutorial on this matter? :D
I have double external flashes on an underwater housing for my 70d and it takes to much time disabling them manually. Is there a way to assign a button to quickly enable/disable flashes? ("MY MENU" is not really an option since it is 4 clicks away i just want a single button to enable/disable them)
To do that you'll need a RF Transmitter mounted to the hotshoe. There are many systems out there, such as Canon's own ST-E3 designed to work with the Speedlite 600EX, or YongNuo's RF603 or 560 Tx.
Ok, so I'm trying to fire a strobe light with a remote trigger on the hotshoe. I've seen vids of people using E-TTL II flash for this setup. But when I enter my flash setting, Built-in flash setting, External flash func. settings and External flash C.Fn setting all say menu can't be displayed as an accessory is attached to the hotshoe. How do I go about.
I just went through that. All you have to do is to make sure that your "Slave Mode" on your camera is set to the lightning bolt symbol or flash alternative. If you have a camera like the 70D it can only fire the external through using it's own flash, so you have to make sure that the external flash can receive the information. Just set the external flash to a slave mode that has to do with flash, not wireless (symbol with radio waves around it)
Hi guys Does anyone know how to turn off the external flash while its mounted without touching de on/off button of course I have the option in my old canon 40d, but I can't find it in this new camera!
Hey! Thanks for this video! I'm thinking of buying a Yongnuo YN600EX-RT flash unit. It is compatible with this wireless triggering, right? And does anybody know if this would also work in HSS, both on and off camera? Thanks in advance!
I like your videos but shooting wide open for super thin depth of field all the time means half of the time your subject is completely out of focus. I'm not sure anything was in focus when you were demonstrating the slave mode.
You are amazing! I really appreciate you taking the time to teach dummies like me the functions of the camera. I purchased my 70D a week ago and I'm just so excited. Thanks again!
Thank you. I still use and love my 70D. I don't know it inside/out yet so I constantly refer back to your tutorials.
The buttons on my flash stopped working so I had to buy a new flash because it was stuck in manual mode at full strength. I was able to watch this video and adjust my settings through the 70D so I no longer needed to buy a new flash. You helped to save me $350 dollars. THANK YOU!
OMG. This was so helpful. I have a flash actually working as a slave now! Thank you so much!
Amazingly helpful video!!!!! I'm hoping it's pretty similar on the 80D since no one has done a video for it yet!! Thank you so much!!!
Does the 70D trigger flash in live view? I want to be able to use the face detection function and trigger flash at the same time. I heard that face detection is only available in live view.
Yes and yes, the 70D triggers flash during live view and Face Detection AF is a live-view only feature.
So I can have the Canon ST-E3-RT transmitter on the 70D in live mode with face detection and when I hit the shutter button, all of my 600ex-rt should fire?

hello, why is it always fire my built in flash no matter what i choose in the wireless function? i just want to fire my external flash only.
Do you happen to know if the YONGNUO YN560 IV is compatible with the canon 70d?
Can I use wireless connection with my speedlite without flashing of popup flash? Only speedlite flashing?
my canon 70D will not fire flash while in live view mode is there a setting to activate it?
I can't even find the Flash Control. What mode? I'm really a novice.... never used EOS 70D before and any similar cameras.
Are you in M mode? It should be on one of the red menu tabs.
Thanks, I will try again.
