Ginger Baker, the legendary Cream-drummer and persona extraordinaire in every sense of the word, died on 6 October 2019 at the age of 80. We wrote down his story and here we feature rather unique footage from our Drummerszone Vault at the Buddy Rich 25th Anniversary Memorial Concert, showing his impeccable talent, and his flammable personality.

Just WOW ... Ive been a fan of Ginger for over 50 years and he can still blow my mind.
Buddy Rich would never let this happen
Th von S Buddy Rich could never play an African rhythm to save his life. So try again.
@@VegetabIeMan Neither was he any good at funk.
@@VegetabIeMan This is rubbish.
@David Roberts True, that. I'd rather listen to Ginger than to Buddy... Can't stand swing...
@@VegetabIeMan haha yer crackin me up, do u have any other stuff
He know the song and how it go's.
He is the way I started playing, the

Hell yeah, it's HIS SONG to know... All these A-holes on STAGE smiling, thinking it's all funny, all fun and games TELLS YOU how privileged they all must be.... They don't give a damn... Just there mess around, maybe concentrate for a couple of seconds, then its back to la la land for them. Shameful.
I hear thunder in the sky ....... Play on forever Ginger RIP.
Ginger was built for a trio like Cream. A trio gives him space. 5,6 or more musicians playing vanilla versions of what Ginger is laying down doesn’t cut it.
Look into ginger bakers Air Force. Full band.
I felt his pain.
Yep Airforce listened the way he leads the tempo
I read a interview with bandmembers from the 90s , that Ginger hated loud rehearsals. He was very sensitive with everyone going "Eleven" when in rehearsals and that makes so much sense in a way. Thats also what many arguments in Cream was about , volume.
Did a great job here ole pete
Revolutionary Realest Rebal Renegade - Ginger Baker the beats flow from within your soul... Thanks for what you have left behind..
I dont understand all the shit talk over an almost (at the time of this recording) 80 year old man who, as a broken and medically stunted human, was still kicking behind a kit!! Everything this man did 50 YEARS AGO changed the face of Rock and Roll.. instead of taking him by THIS performance why not actually research his older stuff and Then try talking trash about him.
You're all extremely lazy if this is all you'll base your opinions by.
RIP Ginger.
Right on. These complainers won't even know how to play with themselves when they hit 80.
Thanks you for sticking up for him he is a legend
In April 2012 he was 72 years old (not almost 80 years).
He was great with Cream and one of my drum idols, but he was a miserable son of a bitch.
Watch Beware Mr. Baker !!! Great Documentary. He sure did change the Face of Rock Drumming..... Master of Synchopation.

Got quite a language there Ginger, it's kind of relaxing to listen to an old british man swear,
R.I.P Ginger Baker:(
RIP Ginger Baker. An incredibly talented musician. Beware the comment thread, it contains many vile comments from hate filled trolls who came here to disrespect the guy just after he dies. It says far more about some of those who frequent youtube comment threads than it does about Ginger Baker.
Forget the band. It would have been better if GINGER had done a 8min solo. R.I.P. GINGER.
Ginger is old and tired ,8 minute solo would be asking a lot, he might have done it though .
Amazing Mr Baker sir I just don't want you to give up keep playing wether it feels good or not the other musicians will fall in line once they've learned you have an old-school style and feel to good music and most of the Young generation don't know what to play now days you sound amazing and I've already learned 4 things from watching your hands on skills Pearl the best reason why I play drums 💪 🥁

Well unfortunately he won’t be playing anything anymore
RIP😔
Awwww nooo I'm sorry
You can tell he's trying as hard as he can to keep up with this Jank band. I give him credit for not walking out.
RIP My favorite drummer.
Love or hate Ginger. He did things his way.
So did Hitler.
Even with poor health, he still manages to perform on stage, playing with mastery. A life dedicated to the instrument, that is commendable! Rest in peace.
At the Buddy Rich Memorial Concert in London (2012), Ginger dispensed with the horns, keeping only bass, guitar and keys. Even then there were issues (I think the guitarist managed to get lost). Needless to say, Ginger was not happy. When Cathy Rich presented him with a Lifetime Achievement Award he very awkwardly said something to the effect of 'Well, I guess all I can say is thank you.' That was it.
After playing he exited and seemingly left the building. He certainly didn't stick around for the post-gig soirée. Mind, I don't blame him. All the butt kissing and awards are for the benefit of others, not for him. Indeed, his disdain for the hubris that plagues the music business was well warranted. Even if it made him look bad.
Perfect timing . Any drummer would love to drum like him.
lol
Ginger "12/8" Baker! Rest in Peace, chap! Phil Seamen is proud of you!
What? The guy who introduced Ginger to heroin? Yeah.. what a great guy..
@Jupiter huh?
@@playitstrange129 actually Ginger had already been snorting H by that time, and Seamen was really upset when he found out. Check Ginger's biography "Hellraiser"
Ginger was an entity of his own. Not even those close to him understood him at times. But, he could beat those skins!!!
Incredible drummer
Whenever Ginger started getting abstract the band completely broke down.
I suspect that is because they’re more like big band rather then jazz (which has a lot more improv)
I am a working drummer and I will tell you: this drumming is absolute, absolute rubbish. The material was not "abstract" at all as it was some misplaced ternary over binary jibberjabber and it was timed worse a decent 12 year old student times this stuff. But you know... that's okay cause he was a very old man in this footage. But if you make statements about the other musicians you need to hear the truth about this level of craft, regardless of his legacy or fans around the world. Also: about traditional bigband drumming specifically: in a big band, as a drummer, you have to lead the time and you have to be very very precise - or if not absolutely precise at least very predictable and tasteful when it comes to timing your figures. You have to pick up the trombones on one side and the trumpets elsewhere and the list obviously goes on with a big...band. But Ginger doesn't even know about this. He's shouting like the brasses are dragging yet he pulls beyond measure. Just an old ex addict who should be left alone after a nice legacy, but artistically has been useless for decades already. They should have let him talk, not play. Although hearing him talk is not that pleasing as well $%^&*(*@ ahah
Amen!!! Anyone that craps on John Bonham, Keith Moon and puts himself on equal status with guys like Elvin Jones needs to eat some humble pie. Ginger, as innovative as he once was, never said many nice things about anyone who played. Sad that he ended up a broken, bitter person.
@@user-nf7cr6wn6o Great post. Ginger was screwed up here. Not to dis his former glory.
Hate to tell you but the band isn’t the one that “broke down” here. Years of being a completely self-inflated asshole that wrote a check his skills could no longer cash caused this breakdown.
Old but good - he was one of the best- rip Ginger
Two Words "GENIUS" and "Artist". There's a difference in being a musician and being an Artist! - These guys are just regurgitating (sometimes WRONG) the notes they read or learned off a script. He co-wrote the song and plays off the cuff from the heart as did all three of the Cream.. It's a "Feeling" and "Fluidity" that ONLY TRUE Top-Level Artists can understand and gel with! - It's why "Cream" was the most talented Band EVER in my opinion! THOSE Three guys were a Force of Nature! A League of their own! Geniuses and Virtuosos in the TRUEST Sense of the words! - God Bless them ALL and RIP Ginger and Jack!
Cheers from London 👍🏴🇬🇧
Drum fill breaks are introduced in jazz music. The fact the band couldn’t understand waiting for his Tom Tom fills proves that it doesn’t work in terms of a big band perspective.
The funny thing is Ginger did make it work in a big band setting back in the 70s with his band Air Force. Great footage to be found round here, and clearly he was smacked outta his mind then, but it worked!
ruclips.net/video/8zmdsKtsjiE/видео.html
dodeka - I think it was the arrangement that was at fault here, rather than the band. The horns were playing that which was written....
Ginger Baker could pull his pants down and shit on that drum set and still be one of the greatest drummers of our time. RIP Ginger
I think that's what he did. Let's call a spade a spade. This is pathetic.
This guy is easily in the top 3 million drummers of all time!
What a shame. Ginger wanted to do buddy rich right n that band was so off.. But ginger also wanted to respect Buddy and the audience by finishing the set. R. I. P. Ginger.
Poor Ginger , that band is all over the place!!
Yeah, some of the guys were changing to the 4 and some guys weren't, etc.
Terrible!
Right, it was so obvious, what on earth were they thinking. I was thinking how horrible it got and was wonderful seeing that Ginger agreed.
Absolutely!! They were taking his 'unusual' snare beats on the 1 and 3 as the usual 2 and 4!! At about 4 mins they got it for about 20 secs ... then it fell apart again!
Ginger is all over the place not the band just embarrassing
Ginger Baker left an indelible mark on music..there is no mistaking his drumming. However this was simply not a good mix for him..the band was simply not in sync with his style. RIP Ginger Baker..he's probably playing his 'Toad' solo wherever he's at.
No,he wasn't in sync with the band. That's some shitty incongruous playing.

Ginger was totally immersed in and wired to the mains of African rhythms, how on earth could American jazz Musicians follow his lead ? To be fair the only ones who felt that were players like the wonderful Art Blakey ! No offence to the great American jazzers but that stuff is no time and the separation between Africa and America musically speaking was colossal it’s a different discipline and anyone who slags Baker is clueless 😀👍
Rest In Peace Mr Ginger Baker
For all the trolls here, Ginger is dead in in the pocket and unwavering. He has to be. He’s steady on the whole way through, and it may be boring to listen to without EC and JB, but this band is just not exciting to listen to. He knows it. There’s nothing wrong with what he playing. He wants to get it over with and get out.
highdb1 he’s just another has been junky The end
Try syncing the audio to a metronome. He clearly drags behind the beat and slows down from time to time.
@Kapālin Exactly. They all pushed and pulled time. It is called feel. Something that is not found in today's click track and auto-tuned muzak...
he sounds like shit, sorry
@Kapālin Levon Helm was the same way. He believed that “feel” was more important than being a Metronome. I defy anyone to name a better singing drummer than Levon Helm.
Another philosophy that Levon shared with The Redhead was rarely using a crash cymbal. They both let the music speak for itself.
The worst thing about this is that if you type Ginger Baker into the search, it is one of the first things to come up. Shame that something that clearly isn’t going well is the thing so many people are going to find. He deserves a better legacy than this, even if he was a miserable bugger.
You're right @SAHBfan. For us as a @RUclips channel, this is just great news. Ginger Baker's legacy as a bugger is obviously true, but during the interview we did with him at the Zildjian Lifetime Achievement Awards, we noticed that a lot of his game was just playing around with people and journalists with him enjoying being the middle of it all. We're still working on that (seriously bad) audio, which we really want to share with you all.
@@drummerszone - I saw Ginger Baker with Hawkwind in the early 80s. My friend interviewed him backstage and said he was friendly and funny (although his dog wasn't). By the time he came on stage he has smoked several roll ups of a herbal nature and had drunk half a bottle of Bacardi. He has to be carried and placed on his drums by two roadies, one under each shoulder. I though "Uh oh, this isn't going to go well". It didn't, but not for the reasons I expected. Despite being out of his box his playing was amazing and clearly so far ahead of Hawkwind in virtuosity that he just showed them up. No disrespect to Hawkwind fans, but it was a terrible match. Really superb drumming, though. I've seen him about three times before he died with 'Ginger Baker's Jazz Confusion'. He was by now suffering from degenerative arthritis of the spine and it was clear here that he was in a lot of pain. He was dosed up (legally on this occasion) on pain killers which seemed to visibly wear off towards the end of the gig. This time he had to be helped to get off his kit at the end and hobbled off to the dressing room. He never did an encore. I saw in one interview he said "God is keeping me alive and in as much pain as possible to punish me for my past sins". So, I can forgive him being miserable towards the end. I'm sure you are right about him playing around with the journalists, though. I saw in one interview, where the interviewer said he was difficult, he said something like "You think that was difficult? If you had interviewed Theolonius Monk he would have given you much more difficult". I can't remember the exact quote, but I think he thought that giving interviewers a hard time was what 'proper jazz musicians' should do ;)
If you have more to share I will look forward to it.
@@SAHBfan Great story! Hope more will like this! And yes, when ready we will share it all - don't worry, haha!

@@hernansalto-dumbattemptracing Yeah, there's lots of things I could lay claim to but which might not bear the weight of objective scrutiny
@Kapālin I’ve known this for a long time. It doesn’t make Ginger a jazz drummer.
It’s up to you to research jazz drummers. He has neither the phrasing, nor the gestures, nor the finesse.
But he was a good rock drummer.
@Kapālin Tony has to roll over in his grave!
There was a magazine called "Downbeat" years ago. At the time, it was the only music magazine out there. It came out once a month. They had a feature where two musicians listened to each other, then critiqued each other. One month, Elvin Jones and Ginger Baker were in the spotlight. Elvin said of Baker, "Nothin' happenin'. Dude's got delusions of grandeur with no grounds. They should make him an astronaut and lose his ass."
That is true - although a bizarre thing to say. Elvin was retaliating because he had been told Baker had said he hadn’t done anything worthwhile see he left Coltrane and he was angry about it. When he was invited to play with Baker the press billed it asa grudge match - a ‘drum battle’. When Baker introduced Elvin he said something like “I am really honoured that the great Elvin Jones has agreed to play with me, a man I have admired my whole drumming career” or something like that. It is the nicest thing I’ve ever heard him say about anyone (!) I believe they got on great after that… I’ve got the drum duet on record, but unfortunately it doesn’t include the introduction.

I mean, they are just playing what's written in the music
@@handsomedean2122 Maybe so, but the arranger made certain choices concerning timing and nuances, it is not engraved on a marble slab what this should be, that arranger wrote the instructions, and the 'conductor' also has influence on how the music should be interpreted - there are many levels to this. I hate when people like to suck up to Ginger Baker as if he was right about everything. Most people closest to him have spoken bad about him but here you are praising him even though, like most people, have probably never met Ginger or knew him personally. Barren Savant - correct, it was Baker who criticised Buddy for having no left foot. 'Whenever he does anything complicated, his foot stops!' For a bit of balance, when Buddy heard than Ginger Baker and Elvin jones were to do a drum battle, Buddy allegedly said 'Elvin will smoke that turkey' - whatever that means??? The Ginger / Elvin thing was billed by the press as a grudge thing, but didn't turn out that way and the two are said to have stayed good friends afterwards.
