VW is known for making some iconic cars like the Beetle, Passat, Jetta, Polo, and Scirocco. But what if we told you that Volkswagen took a ton of different colored parts, put them together, and created an actual mismatched paint OEM rainbow production model … the Harlekin Polo and Golf.

Oh my sweet lord. FINALLY, I got the back story to this mysterious rainbow car that I used to pass by like every day omw to school, back in the 90s in a suburb of Vienna!!! I honestly thought the owner painted it after-market. Never would it cross my innocent mind that VW was actually bold enough to make this in-house!! :D
Wow I think I saw one of the Golfs in Chicago, was so puzzled by it and never saw a paint job like it! The Mutli-color engine bay parts and especially the Mondrian-pattern seats are such wonderful touches. In conclusion, want one!

My Oma(grandmother) in Germany actually had one of these. Even crazier is one time we passed another one on the Autobahn.

I worked as a sprayer for 13 years starting in the mid nineties for vw garage. Loved it when we had a couple of these things in. Colour matching was a a piece of cake 🤣🤣👍
While I wouldn't necessarily prefer to drive this, I absolutely love these - they remind me of my childhood and visiting Germany as a kid. I definitely have seen both iterations, the Polo and the Golf here stateside. It's SO 90s with the primary color vibe, I totally dig it.
Live in Europe, when I was in preschool there were like 4 moms that had on of these
I remember the first time I saw one of these rolling down the street, it thought it was a salvage build. I remember even seeing one in a field left to die, and remember saying to my self "there's that salvage build". Up until about ten years ago I didn't know they were special.
I used to see them a lot in Germany, but i have only seen like 2 or 3 in the last year

Polo Harlekins are pretty common yeah, Golf Harlequins are the rare ones. It's estimated that only 264 were ever built.

I've always wanted to paint my dream car like this (not a VW). Everyone I tell this to thinks I am crazy, but at now I know I am not the only one. I am beyond surprised I never found this car (or this community) in my endless quest for rainbow cars.

My grandma had a normal dsrk green mk3 polo for most of my childhood and i miss it so so much. It was such a cute little car

“Not sure why you’d want to advertise that” [loads of interchangeable parts from previous years] are you serious!? That is an Enormous benefit to the the ownership maintainability of the car. In the heyday of the beetle, The big 3 would do a facelift every year, if not full redesign. Not a lot was changing for technology, it was mostly for looks. This made your car look old and out of date soon after purchase and This also meant parts were frequently more expensive if they were even available at all. I think the lack of change is the main reason Wranglers have insanely good resale (although Chrysler does try to limit interchangeable parts).
in VW europe does't change models every year so if you buy a new car it stays a new car for 3 years then a update.
arjan van raaij I should have been more specific, I was referring to pre 1970 when most American manufacturers would do major redesign every year. I think modern VW design cycles are roughly the same as every other major manufacturer now. However, The Type 1 standard beetle was basically the same platform from 1938-2003.

My father had to paint the single cars back in the days which would then be pull apart again to mix and match. According to his story, there were these plans but they might not always match up because in production they sometime just grabbed what they had. He just hated to do Harlequins :D
I saw one of these in the Sacramento ca area with a license plate “colrblnd” which I relate too. Never knew it was factory.

I had one of these, very rare Polo 1.4CL multi coloured cars.
They were difficult cars to sell, and not many Vw dealerships were given one to sell.
I bought mine in the Sinclair VW dealership in Newport South Wales back in 1996.
It had quite a few admiring looks from customers, but as it cost nearly £1400 over the standard 1.4CL Polo, few of them were sold.
The lovely 15in Indianapolis Alloy wheels, standard on the Polo 16v were standard on the Harlequin models
It was the dreaded rust that caught up with mine, and i sold it back in 2007 to a friend outside Caerphilly.

There used to be a woman who lived in Bebington on the Wirral north west UK who had this exact car ! - You just couldn't miss it ! - I remember seeing it around in the car parks of Asda and in many places like Bebington village and parked on Teehey Lane - It was an eyesore ! but it was rather cool !

Golf Harlequins were sold in Canada - saw one on display at Wetmore Motors, a West Vancouver VW dealer. Wetmore is now a repair shop only.

Back in 1996 I bought a brand new VW Golf Harlequin 5 spd at Metro VW in Irving Texas. Had it about 10 months and was ALWAYS being stopped and answering questions about it. People would not leave me alone about it. Found out thru VW in 2007 just how rare they were.
