  • They dress like the players, and tons of people aren't really sure why! On this episode of Quick Question (pres. by Apartments.com), we dive into why managers wear uniforms! For years, MLB managers have worn full uniform just like the players on their rosters, making it one of the most unique things about baseball. The genesis is rooted in the days where managers played on the team as well as coached, even though last player manager was in the 1980s!

    • @ktoliman
      @ktoliman 4 года назад

      I thought so too. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that all persons on the field must be in uniform during regular play until the final out. It doesn't specify a type of uniform. Grounds keepers are in uniform, umps, even security and the local police. You don't see reporters on the field or even in the dugout until the game is called. I don't even recall camera people going past the bullpen gates when a pitcher comes out.

    NFL head coaches are required to wear some sort of licensed merch of their team, like a hoodie, windbreaker, ski jacket, whatever, depending on location and weather. It's a deal made with the apparel manufacturer. So while they have SOME leeway, there's got to be at least a team logo visible on SOMETHING they wear, even if it's just a ball cap or beanie.

    Managers and coaches have some leeway in the exact parts of the uniform they wear. Many managers in the early 00s would wear one specific type of zip up, fleece lined jacket overtop their jersey. Most managers today wear sleeveless or short sleeve hoodies and base layer shirts. All of this is part of the same kit that players have access to.

    beyond the on-field duties of managers (kicking dirt and all), dugouts are no place for nice shoes and suit pants. Back in the day, spitting chewing tobacco right onto the dugout floor was commonplace and would stain any clothing, and nowadays, sunflower seeds, drink spills, snacks etc can often litter the dugout floor. I always thought the manager uniform was a practical accommodation for the workplace cleanliness (or lackthereof) of a typical baseball dugout

He said that that is why Connie Mack in his suit never went to the mound to change pitchers, but always sent someone else. According to this video, though, that is not correct.

    Minor league managers often coach third base, and they may be closer to the play than some of the other players.

  • @Clarence_Oddbody
    @Clarence_Oddbody 3 года назад

    This doesn’t address base coaches, who also wear uniforms. Not sure if all coaches wear them, but trainers and non-coach personnel usually wear a team branded pullover shirt and/or jacket and business slacks. It’s in part a perk, as after the game your uniform gets laundered with the rest of the team’s gear so you’re not putting wear and tear on your personal clothing. Players get to sell their worn out gear to memorabilia vendors, so guessing managers and coaches do as well if they’re popular enough.
