As a high-dollar high-end collectibles buyer auctions is the way to go for me. BIN prices are almost always over inflated from real market value. Sometimes multiple times what anyone would pay for it. Case in point the BGS 7.5 illustrator on eBay with an asking price of 150k. As a buyer you want that item to be at an auction and may the most desperate man win.
not everyones an idiot seller. im selling my shining celebi in high 9 condition for 399gbp. The ones asking for massive money are in the minority. they wise up eventually.
I hate auctions, nowadays everyone has a sniping service that will bid with less than a second remaining. I wish ebay allowed an option for the traditional auction format.
The way auctions should work is the listing on ebay should be an advertisement saying when the auction will start, maybe in 7 days. It would start as a 10 minute count down and whenever someone bids it resets the time back to 10 minutes. if the timer runs out the last person to bid wins.
That would never work. I don't think that you are taking full advantage of the fact that you don't have to be physically present at a determined time in order to bid. 10 minutes is nothing. You will be leaving SO many potential buyers out of the auction that the prices will end up really really low everytime, great for the buyer, horrible for the seller. No one would ever publish with that auction system. But I do agree on the extension part.
Sniping doesn't work against me. Ebay has the max bid setting. I literately bid what my max bid is, so if I get outbid, I wouldn't have paid more than that anyway. I don't understand why everybody doesn't use it that way. it's what it is there for.
I just bought a box off an auction for about 70% less than the “buy it now price” so yea auction are the way for high end collectibles. But with the negotiation it always is dependent on the seller and how much they are willing to go down to so that they meet your offer.
as a seller myself i have no idea why 99% of items are ever listed at auction, the only reason i could see is people wanting to get rid of items quickly
Watching 4years later. I started selling my cards on eBay. My first card I sold was listed as an auction. Sold for $1. All other items I listed have been at buy it now with the option to make an offer. Out of nowhere I’ve gotten more sales and offers listed that way. I don’t mind sitting and waiting with that method. Especially as a new seller it gives me time to get exposure rather than just the few days and having to relist
I've been collecting for almost two years now, and I'm getting to a point where auctions aren't interesting anymore. Buying bulk auctions was a great way to get my collection going for a relatively low cost. I've even managed to score good condition singles for cheap because either no one wasn't interested in, or because of the auction was ending in an inconvenient time. Now that I'm reaching full sets, I'm more picky with condition, besides the lack of auctions available (if I want 1 out of 102 cards, the probability of me seeing that card at an auction isn't high). Sure, it's more expensive, but it's more comfortable for me. Most BIN even have better descriptions and higher quality images.
one thing i absolutely hate about auction is waiting time. After 7 days of waiting for the auction to end, you gotta wait the 20+ days for the item to arrive. Already, there are possibilities of the items getting lost, maybe some 1 stole your mail, etc. Its never good to have stress added to the anxiety of waiting. So you are absolutely right, who the hell has time to wait for this 7 day auction to end, especially when you may not even win...
Bid on a PSA 10 Trainer’s mag slowking (favorite mon) and had to end the auction during my brother’s concert. Got it for $350 less than the lowest buy it now price I could find. It’s inconvenient but it’s trading time for money.
A great video Mr. Pratte. Such a concise video! Personally I only opt for BIN listings as, like you mention it removes any aspect of under priced sales. I was considering some auction listings to liquidate my inventory but your point around market visibility really changes the perspective on doing such a thing. Thanks again for the well presented video.
good video scott, bin is imo the way of the future, instant payments, set certain settings you cant in auction. interestingly enough there are tools for ebay bin as well, i nornally use it for laptop reselling but it can also be used for pokemon as well, i have found interesting deals that way as well
For the low BIN prices when you find them it's much too risky to bid on an item that has no other competing bids for the whole 7 days only to lose out during the last minute bid war by all these other bidders you didn't even know were there... sure you could've got it slightly cheaper on that bid but now you didn't get it at all and that sucks... i lost a Crystal Kabutops box topper that way
I like auctions sometimes you can pick up bargains because many collectors wont see the auction until its to late but it doesn't work for cards that were newly released there are just to many collectors and players after the new cards
I agree. But it now/make an offer is far and away the best option. Internet auctions may have been viable before, but there's too many reasons why they're just not that great nowadays
i sell mostly with bin obo but i buy mostly with auctions, just got a gold star Jolteon for $100 by auction and its probably a psa 10 worst case a 9, way lower than bin prices.
I hate the bidding. When I am winning down to the last second, then it says item sold and your thinking oh I got outbid by like a dollar or 50 cents. And then you look back and at times it’s like you got beat out by like 150$. Aka pwcc. Ugh so annoying. And sometimes these smart phones are slow and by the time you get notified the bid has ended. But if you have the patience the buyer can make out. And if not I know I will get another chance. But sm is right buying it now is nice because you get security and you establish yourself with a seller and most times then not they remember you or can look back at their records and cut you a deal going foreward. I recently bid on a Pokémon book from the first Pokémon tournament in the USA explaining everything from the cards and start up of Pokémon. I won it in bid for 1cent. I was shocked. I spoke to the owner and said are you sure you want to sell it as this item is worth more then 10 cents. But it’s nice to see people stick to their word and the guy actually sent it. What does stink is the prices people charge for shipping. Sometimes it’s more then the buy it now price even if it’s Regional delivery. Also people selling any of their old cards for rediculous prices. Like a typical 1st edition machamp for like 50,000 usd as it’s a regular typical one not even shadowless or one of a kind type. Great video man! Thanks for the knowledge and can’t wait to tune back Best of life Rob
Hey smpratte, do you advise me to invest in a 1st ed team rocket booster box (plan to send the cards to psa) or should I spend that money on gold star cards or 1ed shining cards for the same value? Thanks
hey scott, so you think the pokémon gameboy originals red and blue or even yellow are good investments like the tcg. i was wondering about getting one of each
Most of the reason I do Buy It Now is due to Temporary Buying Restrictions. Mostly because my eBay account is new. But I do find good deals and you can never go wrong with ebay bucks promos :)
Awesome insights as always, Scott. Love your videos and can't wait to say I was around at only a few K subs when you go huge. Just wondering what your thoughts are on going the auction route for cards with low/lower value and low/lower interest? Like bulk lots of cards and newer set cards. Sending love from Australia!
I disagree to a certain extent. I feel like throwing an item up for bid creates pressure on the buyers. People know they have a limited time to act and therefore they want to make sure they get the item. Having an item up for "Buy it Now" creates kind of a reference price that makes the buyer say "Oh so that's what they're asking, if I see one cheaper, I can consider it a good deal". IN a real example, I just sold my PSA 9 Latios gold star for $650 on Ebay on an auction, it sold for much for than any other Latios gold star according to "sold listings". Lastly, a person getting out-bid put in the mind set of "I just got out bit! I guess I can bid another $10.. or maybe another $10" and it keeps going.
Right! When I see an auction I check the current buy now prices and the lowest prices on solds. that typically sets my limits. Then any bid up to that amount I can feel comfortable with. I can wait for an auction to save some money, and if it goes over my limits, I'll wait for the next one, or have the option to get the buy it now.
Hey man, been following your vids for a while! Im a sealed booster collector and just made my biggest purchase so far....sealed 1st edition base set blister...would you advise to keep sealed in the long run, or is there profit to be made by opening and grading all 11 cards...cheers bud
Pokémania! i would keep it sealed. they're already so rare and there's no guarantee that the cards inside will be prefect. you could get an entire offcenter pack and not get a single 10. there are PLENTY of copies of the graded cards but very few sealed blisters.

Futureguitarist15 Very true, solid advice...i want to be in a position in the future where i wont need the money and i can just open for fun 😜
Hey SM, I have a quick question and was hoping you'd take a minute so I could get your opinion... I've been collecting for bout 9 months now, so alot of the older real valuable sets and cards I can't look into as much for investing in, like I can newer sets. One of the first sets I purchased packs from was legendary treasures. Got great pulls and really enjoyed everything bout it, esp with the chance of pulling to ultra rates in a pack. Anyways I'm up too 108 sealed packs of legendary treasures. I've put allot of my investing into this one set, I've also just recently started on flash fire packs. Both are respectively becoming expensive pretty quickly so I'm happy with my choice on those. Question 1: would you suggest continuing to buy packs from these sets altho they are getting pricier, or would you really stockpile on say, burning shadows, shining legends, and ultra prism while they're new and very cheap? So to sum up really what I'm asking... do you see these three sets becoming very valuable in the future, or stick with semi older sets like leg treasures and flash fire? Thanks for the time and keep up the great work, love the channel!
I wonder if by any chance your style of making videos is influenced by rudy of Alpha Investments? The always changing background containing various items from your collection and the odd easter egg reminds me of him. As does your style of presentation.
Wow, now it's the true "no window movement" moment! lol xD
Love your content Scott! ^^

Love a great buy it now deal! Hate waiting a week for an auction to end when you first see it newly listed on ebay lol
I hate auctions, nowadays everyone has a sniping service that will bid with less than a second remaining. I wish ebay allowed an option for the traditional auction format.
ebay actually encourages sniping
They should have the option to set up the automatic 5 minutes extension like in Yahoo Auctions!
The way auctions should work is the listing on ebay should be an advertisement saying when the auction will start, maybe in 7 days. It would start as a 10 minute count down and whenever someone bids it resets the time back to 10 minutes. if the timer runs out the last person to bid wins.

Great tip: look for "buy it now" sold prices rather than auctions to try and get a rough valuation.
Austin thanks for the tip!
I do like auctuons as a buyer. But I am usually looking at small items. For big purchases I like the make an offer and buy it now.
Watching 4years later. I started selling my cards on eBay. My first card I sold was listed as an auction. Sold for $1. Scott's words are the embodiment of the people's concerns
What frame/mounting method are you using in the background? Anything special? Looks great displayed like that.
Congratulations on 4,002 subscribers. It will be exciting when you get to 10,000. You're almost there. 😊
Jennifer A thanks so much Jennifer! If I can make it to 10k that would be the ultimate goal. Slowly but surely :)

I hate putting stuff on auction. I live in Canada and no one wants to pay shipping so I just get screwed.
at least the Canadian dollar is so low that Americans can afford more for your goods :D
Shane carwin it doesn't make a difference. I swear if any American has to pay more than 2.67 for shipping they pass
Yes I walk away from a lot of cards because they were charging 20$ + fee
@@carguy1697 same here. I mean if it's a card that's say $500 then I get it. But so many times it would be a $15 card with $20 shipping
ImVeryBrad right! And you are not about to pay 20$ shipping fee for a new single Japanese card
