Great video, I truly do feel like a lot of people right now are frustrated in the hobby because there’s no real definitive “money-maker” anymore that the average person can get their hands on. Scalping isn’t as nearly as bad as it was a few years ago, the Japanese market has basically already been tapped into and has now cooled off (for the most part), and the modern chase cards have already had their time in the sun for being incredible short-term investments/gains. I feel like most of the success that a lot of the older ppl in the hobby have had has just come through time (like you said), and is something that I have to remind myself of a lot so I don’t feel too bad about not having as much stuff as someone else.
I think a lot of people persecute so many old dogs in the hobby and forget how much those people paved the way for collectors today. Pokemon is still young but so much of its growth can be attributed to the work of people like yourself, Gary, and others have put in.
Pokemon Collecting is still young compared to a lot of other pop culture collectables. It's always funny to me when I see people saying "vintage is dead". It doesn't take a lot of comparative analysis to see that people always revert back collecting the older and rarer items, because scarcity tickles our lizard hind brains. Modern is a moving target, but WOTC is always going to be "vintage". Personally, I'm a WOTC guy as I grew up with it, but I also like modern cards as well. Dare I say I even open some modern here and there and actually enjoy it....thus destroying the long term profits I could make in 1-3 months. But all kidding aside, most of the noisiest people are the most immature and inexperienced. Modern is like stock picks, WOTC is like a mutual fund. Buy what you love and remember to actually enjoy it along the way folks!
Vintage is the truest form of collecting where even an uncommon caterpie has a voice where modern pokemon feels like a mix between competetive mario kart and slot machine simulator
The argument could also be made that the market for all the mid year stuff is drying up. True everyone will go for early sets. But the mid sets won't have a buyer like the market for a 44 Cadillac is drying up.
@@kevinclear4007 I agree that interest will diminish for certain eras. Even certain vintage WOTC sets aren't as universally popular as others. However, I think as long as Pokemon is popular mid era stuff will have a market. If I had to guess, every era has a fan base, however, some are quite a bit more popular than others for whatever reason. It's kinda like how the Scarlet and a Violet era we're in now isn't as hyped and bought up like Sword and Shield era, 151 set being the exception. But, Sword and Shield also had the benefit of "COVID Hype". You could make an argument that if not for that Sword and Shield may have had roughly the same popularity of XY and GX. Even those sets saw a renewal of interest during that time. Only time will tell, but I do think true vintage is the best long term hold. Modern is a moving goal post, but WOTC is fixed.
Love the content as always. Really brings people back down to earth. Its hard to take a step back and invest in something that people hate on. But you'll always get the last laugh when the haters are rushing to buy the same thing years later for 10x. And more then likely the reason behind buying it in the first place was not for the gains but getting something you enjoy. Man, great video just keep it going.
In a market for every winner there is a loser. The losers are those who pay £££s to buy and grade modern promos printed to the ground. In the long term there is no way that a pop 20k PSA 10 non holo promo can go up
I was looking through your store on Ebay and saw something that looked very familiar in your very miscut water energy card. I have a holo deoxys that is extremely miscut but only on the back just like your energy!
Ive been collecting and ripping random product for about 8 years now. I'm about to start listing singles on ebay through ese using pwe. Set my new printer up. Ordered sleeves, top loaders, team bags. Hopefully working my way into 20 card submissions. I don't expect to be rich within the first year. I just want to be able to reinvest back into higher end pokemon, and never work a day job again lol. Is that to much to ask!😅
Great video man. It very much sums up the mindset of the average investor. Personally, I was blessed with a modest windfall of cash and invested in diversified untraditional high risk assets, including Pokemon. The way I looked at it is like withdrawing cash from the ATM at the casino. If I lose it all, it'll suck, but I can afford to lose it. As such, I can afford to long-term it. At the detriment to many who invest in Pokemon, they look at it as a lifeline, with some going all in. At the end of the day, it's how you frame it and what that sum of capital means to you. If you go into an untraditional, high risk asset like Pokemon, you need to be okay with it going to zero if it comes to that.
Its funny I just saw a thread on pokegym with you in it. people were talking about 1st ed base boxes being OUTRAGOUS at $5000 per box. Man.. what I would give to go back in time and buy up boxes like back to the future with his little sports book.
That’s why I’m spreading everything for longterm, Pokemon because I gree up with it and I specifically like the vintage cards and specific artworks, dca’ing crypto for the next big run and always having cash on hand for next projects.
Its not about timing the market but time in the market, which alot of these soo called new investors dont understand. You should do more videos like this
Long term stonk I believe is very difficult to achieve in hobbies, you achieve it accidentally if you are passionate in the subject for the love of the hobby, it cannot be calculated unlike finance which isn’t a hobby for majority of people
Speaking for myself, my main hobby is sneakers and reselling them, Ive been in it in all market conditions and made good money, incrementally over years on the side of my 9-5 work, it wouldn’t have happened in a month. In Pokemon and vintage video games I just bought what I liked and variants of products that aren’t jacked up, preferably japanese in both fields. Slowly but surely, with passion. Maybe in 20 years those PSA 9 common cards will stonk and I’ll end up making a profit, probably, whatever, like you said the main increase already passed on vintage. You can’t chase the stonk in collectibles.
WOTC is dead, especially 1st Edition and Shadowless Holos. Might as well sell them to me for 75% market value while you can get something for them yet.
I'm a long term investor but if this doesn't double in the next month I'm selling it all!
😂

I had to pause your video to watch Eat the Rich music video, great nostalgia trip. Thanks for that.
I feel most people have no idea what the word investment/investing actually mean.. they just jump from one trend to another flipping
Paris Hilton got NOTHIN' on you, Scott! XD

Smpratte just scolded the whole community 😂
Nice listen! 🙌🏽
The thumbnail is my dream room
I apologize for adjusting it from "69" likes
Great video! Very informative.
Intense capital or time.
Out of the $X dollars I’ve spent on Pokemon in the past 3 years only a quarter of that is personal collection the rest is investment.
Its not about timing the market but time in the market, which alot of these soo called new investors dont understand. You should do more videos like this
Thank you PokeDad
smpratte where you said if it already "meme-stocked" it's too late. Does that apply to pokemon?
In other words collect shit cuz you like it and you enjoy the process
If nothing else that thumbnail is really cool
