Very true take on the "discovery" of vintage. The funny thing is, it has been my experience that many "modern" collectors have yet to discover E-readers, let alone subsequent English sets. So, yes, vending would blow their minds, but I have personally witness a nice stamped reverse cause a great deal of stir.
Before watching the video, I have to say it's the other way around for me. I can't stand modern cards anymore. I only collect vintage cards with a few exceptions of modern cards.
I think among vintage it was more universally interesting to look at. Like basically every card in the WOTC era looked great. Nowadays I would argue some cards look better than ever like the art rates and alternate arts. But some cards nowadays have that lame 3D animation look that to me looks super cheesy. So I think it’s a mixed bag with modern. Like go look up the Umbreon V Alt art from Eevee Heroes (Japanese) or Evolving Skies (English) and tell me that card isn’t incredible.
Vintage is awesome! Sadly a lot of times it’s less liquid than modern. Like some of the game boy promos for instance move a lot slower. Even some of the Masaki cards like the machamp are slow moving
boring? because it was a once in a year set? because arts were focused on the pokemon and not the background? because there were only a few charizard? feel so bad for "modern collectors"
I would agree with your points. History of anything holds a special place setting the begging of what is to come and vintage Pokemon will always be that. In the same manner, modern will always have its place and create new history that we will reflect on many years later as "vintage".
smpratte, you’ve mentioned the Yu Nagaba eevees in passing for a few videos now. I might have missed a video where you might have talked about them in a little more detail, but what’s your take on it? It sold out in like 1.5 days. Current market is around 1K for a set of PSA 10s. It’s sorta following the direction that the eevee ponchos took back when they first came out. I personally like the derpy illustrations and think they’ll do well in the next few years and see a similar growth to a lot of the Japanese exclusive promos that were only released a few years ago. Too much of a hot take?
What about Mid era stuff? Low print numbers and a time where most people had moved on.. but revisting these sets (though extremely expensive) is a treat when you see how pokemon pulled out all the stops to keep the TCG ticking. I'm biased cause I LOVE gold stars and have set goals to try collect some of my favorites. But I could easily see EX collecting or reverse stamp collecting etc.
I still love Black and White - Legendary Treasures. The fun artwork of an alt art was there - even the though the format was still very traditional. Wonka Bar chase cards? Yes.
Im a fan of both. However, the only reason why modern only collectors couldn't give a monkey about vintage is because most likely the card isn't a "full art" and nowadays collectors will view most vintage card's as a regular holo. Yet if Pokemon were to make a full art version of Shining gyarados from Neo rev for example the modern hype dawgs would go insane. There's so many different amazing avenues you can go down when it comes to vintage. I find it strange how anyone can call it boring.
I’d say that only applies to some vintage holos, because everyone and their mom still loves shinings, crystals, and gold stars despite being “half arts.”
Card collecting is very similar to coin collecting. You start with the modern, and eventually find your way back to ancient Roman. Each step gets more and more interesting.
To me they're both just as fun. If it was only wotc sets, of course, a bit boring. But we have so much cool stuff on the Japanese side, I've been a fan for years and years and there's still things new to me every once in a while, if I were to try to collect everything I would need 5 lives xP
Can anyone tell me the name and number of the card that he’s talking about around three minutes? Sounds like a Pikachu underage drinking and having cake lol.
Man that thumbnail hit my soul haha. Ken Sugimori IS Pokemon to me. And its not all old! Look all all the wonderful tag team cards Arita did, as well as those Japan Post promos that have been popping off recently. Modern has some really fun and crazy designs, but I'll take a Sugimori or Arita card over modern 9 times out of 10. (But im old so I get it)
Moonbreon is not rare at all and very valuable…terrible point. What do you define as valuable ? So many modern cards that are not rare over $50 over $100
@WeyHighDesigns in my opinion Moonbreon is reasonably rare, it's scarcity means there is a lot more people that are trying to acquire it than there is availability. the booster box price is another indication of a few cards inside being rare and or in high demand.
@@BtMo-og2cw there’s over 6000 10’s man. It’s not a rare card. The fact that lots of people want it still just prove your point wrong. There’s tons of them out there and Valuable and high demand.
@WeyHighDesigns saying there are are tons of them ....this may be correct but there is a ton more demand for it. There are millions of Pokemon collectors out there who do not own this card and want it desperately
I think that pop reports are really misleading because it's the very expensive cards that are graded at a very high rate. (The high desired cards get graded more than the less desired ones) just because there are a lot of Moonbreons graded doesn't mean there is more of this card printed....it just means more graded
Imo, vintage from base set to neo series are boring, theres barely any cards that have that art, even for its old style and lack of printing machines capable of printing high quality and detail. Imo the best vintage that actually looks good and deserves its vaule from the amazing art is thr heartgold soul silver series.
@@Tony_3XL because there are billions and billions of cards produced. Countless PSA 10s of the rare chase cards… Vintage is a time capsule and becomes rarer each year as it’s opened and lost. Those packs can contain anything from a base set Charizard to a gold star Rayquaza. That to me is thrilling.
Nah I think most people get bored of Pokemon cards in general after a while. I hate the modern cards though, wish that the Pokemon company would reprint the vintage sets like Konami does with yugioh... instead of having to pay a fortune for a beat up vintage card!
@@theparalyzedarmy3836 151 has nothing to do with base set btw, its not a literal reprint they never decided to copy and paste a set from 20 years ago. Wish they did that! Also copying the booster box and pack arts with just small adjustment like a 25th stamp on the booster in the corner or a very small identifier on the card (not like the huge celebrations stamp...)
Scott this looks like a sad attempt to pump vintage after the crash. Modern is just more exciting, it has better artwork, and doesn’t cost an arm and a leg that most people can’t afford to deter people from taking a second look at them
You obviously dont know you can pick up almost all wotc 1st edition psa 9 holos for 1/5 of the price of a modern chase card. Modern prices are absolutely sky high right now.

Feels like the perfect timing to grab vintage 😉
#1 most sold card I. TCG player last month was Charizard base, others seem to think so too haha
100% prices for vintage graded cards are as low as they were 3 years ago so you can totally get some absolute great deals on auctions
