If you want to know more about the old man that sacrificed himself to save the continent, his relationship to the twins and a good bit of important lore, I recommend seeking out Urianger in the Waking Sands and accepting a blue quest called Primal Awakening. This will start a questline that will push you through a series of raids that tell the story. They're quite difficult, but if you seek out a level 90 player willing to escort you through them, you shouldn't have any problems.
In fact, if you're interested in the lore and the story of the game, I'd push you to do all the blue quests you see. The main quests are quite long anyways, so might as well take some breaks once in a while and do some side content.

"Elf Count of Montecristo" I love this descriptor, considering other gamers have called Count Edmont "Count Dripula".
As for equipment, there is a vendor in Mor Dhona (and other cities) that sell you end expansion level gear for tomestones (lv50+ dungeon/raid/trial tokens), usually these have stats that can carry you half way into the following expansion, these can help you raise your stats along with quest rewards and dungeon drops.
As you commented, Transmog (or Glamour as we call it) is a great way way to express yourself, no gear is useless as you will find gear that help you dress up as you wish to present yourself, the only limitation is that certain gear is locked to specific jobs (fending = tanks, striking = monk/samurai, etc)

I remember when you first put the ad out looking for your girlfriend and you said that some tried to tell you not to do it, and that you were held back by fear in the past. Fast forward to today and we see you playing FFXIV with your girlfriend! Really happy that you followed your heart man and that good came out of it. A lot of appericiation to ARR for me only came way down the line when I finally understood what they were setting us up for and why. I found it an incredible slog when I first played it (and that was before they cut 20+ hours from it), but have come to really cherish it after latest expansions. It grows on you.

Personally my fav part of ARR are the background NPCs. I like that the ones we meet outside of beginner dungeons either die or join us or both. I like how Papalymo just disapproving Asian dads all the Doman refugee kids, Minfilia's mom thinks Lucia is hot, and how Edda just loses it and carried around her dead boyfriend's head. It's nice seeing everyone just doing their own thing.
Some tips:
To enlarge your preview window you can right click and set it to anything over 100%.
You can sort your inventory so its easier to clean by right clicking and selected "sort"
If you're a lvl 50 tank please get tomestone gear from Mor Dhona or vendor near major Aetheryte plaza. (Message brought to you by your friendly neighborhood healer)

I always say, ARR is a great story with a terrible delivery because of MMO constraints on levelling and pacing. If the whole story would cut out all the philosophy of "let's toss extra quests and convoluted stories because the player needs to be in this zone to grind the levels a while", it would be a decent Final Fantasy story.
But length + pointless side quests + padding time before the big moments makes ARR just unbearable in many regards.
