I can`t express how much I admire your work. Everything you create is pure magic. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge and extraordinary gift.
This is beautiful! Am I the only one who sees water among the grasses? I want to perch a small bird on one of the long grass stems. Thank you for this lovely inspiration! I'm always amazed how you take an unremarkable photo and turn it into a gorgeous work of art.
Another amazing and instructive video. You are awesome. You deserve all the accolades you get. And you do it without pushing products, religion, or variety of classes. Thank you for all you do.
Karen I love your video you are so generous. I’m starting with pastel after 30 years + watercolour painting it’s different and I enjoy it very much. Thank you very much.
Liebe Karen, vielen, vielen Dank für dieses tolle Video. Es hilft mir sehr weiter, ich habe viele neue Sachen gelernt. Danke und liebe Grüße aus Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in Deutschland.
Your style amazes me! When I first started watching your videos I was like I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE where this is going, and ultimately it went to a magnificent painting. I was like WOW. I just started with pastels and will use your videos as a reference as I move along on my journey. Thank you!
Great video. So sad. I had a barely used Terry Ludwig Red Rock set, I loved that was stolen out of my SUV along with over $1000 worth of pastels, Uart and Pastemat papers and wheeled art cart; Unisons, and Nu pastels; a few senneliers too. All irreplaceable as I am a senior on such a limited Canadian pension. Broke my heart.
Simply stunning, Karen! I always appreciate your generous offerings on youtube. Thanks so much for your down-to-earth style and kindness in sharing your knowledge!
I am just beginning to try chalk pastels. Your teaching and results are super!!! I live in hope that you will sometime paint a scene with a rainbow in it. No one else does!!! I have searched in vain for a rainbow scene. Please, please, be the first to show us how to do a rainbow scene! Thank you for your excellent instructions!
This is so helpful and informative! I have always wondered when to use the hard pastels and when to use the soft. You explained their different attributes and uses really well. :)
Thank you, Karen! Your marsh painting is so beautiful! I liked learning about the dry wash underpainting. Seems like a great way to get started. It was also helpful hearing how you decide what colors to use.
Thank you for a wonderful tutorial. Your guidance through demonstrating the process of pastel painting is fantastic! I appreciate that you get to the business of the painting quickly. I’m new to pastels and am so thankful for your kind instructions. My background is in watercolor which presents both challenges and benefits. KUDOS to you for a fabulous job sharing your extraordinary talent through beneficial tutorials! 😎🎉🥰
Beautiful work Karen. You really have such an artists’ eye. This painting is stunning to draw your interest and keep it! Thanks in particular for your expert instruction on the marsh grasses. I love your work.
This is a stunning painting! I learned so much from watching your video three times. I never thought of using hard over soft pastels! Thank you so much for providing this!
I like it, I like it pretty big.....I am getting back to being an artist again. I like soft pastels more, oil pastels, not sure if you have tutotrials in that medium
Really helpful and inspirational! Have been using your wet wash technique but will try this now outdoors. Thank-you...so much more sensible in our Scottish weather!
You really have a way to make it simple and to teach simply what I think it’s complexity and frustration 😥 I’m new to pastel, painting in watercolor steadily. Thank you. You’re a great teacher 🧑🏻🏫👌
I try and watch all your videos, you’re AMAING! Congrats! I see you have your own Terry Ludwig set, I saw it on their website! I’m going to order your set and the intense set. I’m looking for sets to get me started, a general all around that will cover most of what I want to do. I like Landscapes, Sunrises and Sunsets. Again, congrats, I love your Terry Ludwig set.
Hi Karen. How do you when using a dry underpainting prevent from filling the tooth of the paper too quickly? Have you ever prepared pastel paper with clear gesso to add some tooth. The UArt paper is really expensive and for practice with these exercises would like to have a more affordable alternative. I have Nupastel and medium soft pastels. Thank you for all of your help.
Hi Karen....yet another great and instructive film. I would like to ask if you use just black foam core for your board or do you cover the black board with black paper? It always looks pristine and mine is so grubby after a couple of paintings.
Karen your work is always so beautiful! How do you go about selling it??? Are you selling at trade shows, website, Instagram, Twitter??? Or are you in a gallery? Thank you!!!🙂👍👍👍
Thank you Marvin. I sell my work online through my Etsy shop and through my website. I do share everyday on Instagram and have sold when someone sees a painting they like!

Good reminders because I haven’t been doing art for awhile.
So beautiful 😍 thanks for the great video. Please, how do you fix the painting when it's done ?
Thank you! I don't use final fixative. I just store my paintings under glassine paper.
grazie!🌹

Hi Karen....yet another great and instructive film. I would like to ask if you use just black foam core for your board or do you cover the black board with black paper? It always looks pristine and mine is so grubby after a couple of paintings.
Thanks! I am currently using a piece of black masonite board sold at hardware stores for chalkboards. It can be washed clean with water.
@@KarenMargulis Thanks Karen. You ALWAYS have a simple solution. Wish you came over to Cumbria in the UK.
Hi Karen, really love your videos, you've helped me a lot on this pasteling journey. My question is which is softer Sennelier or Schmincke?
Thanks for watching! Dakota pastels ranks Schminke as the softest pastel with Sennelier coming in at 4th for overall softness.
Do you wipe the pastels off each time of moving from one color to next? Just beginning to learn. thank you
Welcome! I usually wipe them when I go from A dark area to a lighter area or when I notice the pastel picked up another color.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 Brillant 😊
Thank you!!

Omg yes
I only just started! Only have a set of soft pastels.should I wait to get hard pastels? Or is there something else I can do to try this pai ting?
You can paint with only soft pastels. Just practice using a light touch! Thanks for watching!
I am a newbie and seem to make a mess of blocking.
How do you keep the paper up?
I make hinges with artist tape and attach on each corner of the paper....sticky side up and then tape this bit down.
6:55 i would leave like that
Once again as you proceed with adding new marks and a beautiful painting emerges from the "ugly" stage.
Thanks!!
yes I freeze or I spend an hour and then toss it :(
