    I never understood the distaste for Ken, I enjoyed his arc a lot
    What always intrigued me about him was the fact you need to accept death to unlock your persona in this game.
    Which for a 10 year old really sold me on it.

    The crazy thing about how much the fandom hates him is how much they love Aketchi when they are so similar. I have seen so many people ask "what would Aketchi have been like if he had met the phantom thieves before becoming a murderer?" and the answer is KEN!!!! The only difference in their stories is that the man who ken wanted to get revenge against showed him empathy and kindness. In persona q2 Shinji even gives Aketchi the same advice he would give to Ken on October 4th which is to do what you feel is right but understand that your choices will have consequences. Shinji is my favorite character and it upsets me so much when I see Ken hate because it undermines what Shinji was fighting for.

      Joke's on you: I like Akechi AND Ken. Both are good characters and good examples of using the same backstory base, but how different circumstances and luck give different outcomes. Those that hate on Ken, imo, hate kids.

      I absolutely agree with you. I personally love Ken, but really dislike Akechi, the reason being, Akechi was utterly consumed by hostility and negativity, whereas Ken was saved from it. It is true that both have some sort of similarities regarding their backstory, but the way they developed are entirely different. Ken stands as a symbol of hope and redemption; Akechi became a serial killer. If anything, this comparison has made me love Ken even more, knowing how bad things could've turned had his character arc not dodged that bullet. We need to protect Ken with all our might.

      I think Akechi fans can't really let go of their picture perfect cinnamon roll idea of him. They'll always see him as the fake, soft, cutesy smiley boy image that he manufactured as his public facade.
      It doesn't help that Akechi is also fairly good looking, and that DOES help alot when getting people to forgive a character who did bad things.
      Personally, I never really understood how much people liked Akechi. I saw right through his act instantly, and the game practically does everything it can to wink wink nudge nudge to you that there's a hidden side to him that the audience isn't privy to the moment he's introduced, even before his true nature was revealed.
      I only really started to like him when he fully embraced being a villain.

    Having played 5R before 3R, I see Ken as a far more mentally stable version of Goro Akechi. Both were orphaned at a young age and both awakened to the power of a Persona with revenge being their primary goals. But Ken managed to make actual friends even while lying about his reasons for joining S.E.E.S. while Akechi remained alone with the exception of the superficial attention he got as the Detective Prince. Ken had a role model to call him out about his desire for vengeance and who cared for him unconditionally (Shinji) and witnessed firsthand just how horrible he could have turned out if he gave in to his desires. (Takaya) So Shinjiro's death and Ken deciding to posthumously see him as a role model of sorts was a great way to redeem Ken's character, with the addition of his desire to grow stronger and find a new meaning for his life at only 10/11 years old.

  • @TheRedGoon

    I think as a character, Ken, much like Nanako, and Akechi, have similar origins.
    All lost their mother, though the circumstances of their passing varies, with Ken & Akechi's being a result of unfortunate situations that led to them being orphaned at a young age.
    Nanako got off lucky since she still had her father around, and didn't witness her mother's death herself.
    All three are the justice arcana, and unlike Nanako, both Ken and Akechi were seeking justice not just for the death of their mothers, but also the crappy life they were left with, and without proper guidance by others, would have both gone down dark paths that would have shaped their lives; though Akechi has kind of gone farther down than Ken has.
    All three are associated with Light, are mature for their age, but have that air of innocence and yearning deep down, and wrestle with complicated feelings that require others in order to help them find clarity.
    I think in that regard, Ken works as well as Nanako or Akechi does.

      Yukari's hate is almost exclusive to the West. She's actually quite loved in Japan. The issue is that the west are trying WAY too hard to be "adults". Ironically that's the very thing Ken and the Magician characters do. They hate them because they relate to them. The west hate mirror's, it is what it is. As I've said far too many times. The most annoying thing about those trying to prove themselves "mature" adults, is that they often show less self awareness than actual children.

    • @ShadowOfMassDestruction
      @ShadowOfMassDestruction 5 месяцев назад +3

      @@Ninja07Keaton That's pretty interesting. One thing I'm a bit disconnected with as well is people and their voice acting issues because my preferred way to experience P3 is P3 FES Undub which replaces some music with the Reincarnation ost and it has the japanese voices. I know Michelle Ruff makes Yukari sound so angry a lot of the time while japanese Yukari just sounds like a barking pink poodle to me. Things like that can really change how people view a character.

    • @Ninja07Keaton
      @Ninja07Keaton 5 месяцев назад +3

      @@ShadowOfMassDestruction Yukari doesn't "sound" angry, she IS angry. She lost her father at the age of 6 because of the inciting incident of the game. Father was blamed for this incident, and Yukari was hated and shunned by society BECAUSE SHE WAS HIS DAUGHTER. Yukari is far more graceful than most would be in this situation. If anything, she should have shown much more anger than she did. The worst part of having trauma is being expected by society to behave as though you don't have trauma. The hypocrisy of the western audience is almost suffocating, but these are the times we live in.

    Imo, the hate stems form him being a child. All the reasons given by others are it's window dressing. It boils down to he's a kid acting... like a kid. Realistically. Yosuke suffers similar hate: he acts EXACTLY like a 16 year old boy in 2011 and people hate him for it. Mishima as well, acts realistically and people hate on him.
    Honestly, the pattern is "if the character acts realistically for age and circumstances, they will be hated" because it reflects negative aspects of society and a certain section of players hate that because they are reminded of their own flaws. Also notice it's mostly MALE characters.... I said what I said.

    As someone who values variety in a main cast especially from a Turn based rpg having a young kid in the group was a welcome suprise for me and he's pretty damn useful in combat too. And to say his story is heavy would be putting it lightly, I was so shocked when the 4th came I geninuely did'nt know how that whole situation would go. I never even got spoiled about the event and they do a great job making you think Aragaki'll stick around for the rest of the game. As far as Ken goes I understood it was part of his arc in the game, people getting mad at him don't understand how complicated of a situation it was. In the end though he realized his mistake and made sure not to waste what Aragaki gave him.

    Then again, people who hates Ken probably wouldn't click this video in the first place.
    And since you put movie adaptation into consideration, I also want to point out that in P4 route of PQ, there is a conversation between Ken and Kanji which Ken confesses his revenge plot, but also starts being hesitant about it at some point; he even asks Kanji "what would you do if the culprit you're after turns out to be a good person?"
    It shows that, despite the hate, Ken is still sensible enough to realize that Shinjiro is actually a good person, and find his own plan to be at least questionable.
    Even if we exclude the spinoff, the line "I needed someone to hate, to keep myself going." proofs that he does understand his wrongdoing as the coping mechanism to push down the though of being left alone.
    (Btw, the line didn't technically change, it's one-to-one with the OG Japanse version dialogue, which OG English version changed for some reason.)
    Oh one thig unrelated, there are quite a number of fanarts in Japan fandom which depicts Ken and Shinjiro become BFF, unlike what we have here.

    I don’t understand why people hate children for just acting the way they would in a given situation. This is very similar to a certain character in FFXIII who had a very similar arc involving a character he wanted to kill because he’s “responsible for the death of his mother”. And in both that game’s case and this one it was an accident. And then both acting as scared wimpy little crybabies is very realistic.
    Don’t actually tell me if you were a child and watched your mother die you’d be taking it well. Completely unfair to hate on Ken for not taking it well.
    I genuinely think his character was the best written in the entire game and I will never understand the hate, other than people just hating that he’s a kid.

I'm sure that a lot of full-grown adults would do something similar. Can I just say that them constantly using the "no confirmed fatalities" argument in regard to the subway crash scene at the beginning of the game as a "got you" for people trying to tell others about how Akechi probably killed some innocent people is unbelievably stupid? It is the exact kind of cherry-picking argument that'll cause anyone on the fence about the subject in question to declare the side who used it as insane (and a lot of them are unfortunately, which makes people hate Akechi as a character by association). People were still in the hospital by the time of the final Palace because of what he did to the bus driver there (who himself could have been innocent of the conspiracy, which is another argument they have where they claim that he only gave mental shutdowns to evil people, which is proven false anyway thanks to Wakaba's murder).
      I wonder how many people were turned away from ever liking Akechi as a character because of these people basically going through Jungian style possessions where they verbally attack anyone who doesn't worship the ground he stands on. He's a sympathetic villain who's caused a crap ton of destruction. That's it. The reason why he did what he did is sad and understandable, but his actions make it very hard to redeem him without it resulting in his death (and we all know how that went down). Writing off Akechi as just a villain and nothing more is dumb when he's supposed to be Joker's shadow in a sense (similar to Adachi being Yu and Yosuke's Shadow Archetype in Persona 4), but downplaying all of his constant murders and screaming at people who don't like him just makes you look like you're glorifying terrorism (since Akechi's crimes could be considered as such). Both sides are black, so we need to meet in the middle in order to get to the light of Akechi's character. Unfortunately, that's never going to happen because history repeated itself like it did with Ken.

    something i think is really important to me about ken is his love. his actions stemming from his love for his mother, and his love for his friends. he wants to help and be useful and protect others. his nervousness about being seen as a bother, his desire to help mitsuru after the death of her father. i just think that thats an important part of him people should think about. anyway, on topic about 10/4, i think another part of discussion about ken that makes me angry is the blatant and obvious favoritism towards akihiko and shinjiro. those two are beloved, and ken caused them pain, so ken is the worst. when shinjiro is the one who killed his mother????? i dont hate the senior trio of course, but i genuinely get mad when i think about shinjiro's "i just want to forget it happened" or akihiko or mitsuru not even bothering to talk to ken. i'll always say that at the end of the day the senior trio were fifteen and the real problem is ikutsuki, the adult, who didnt bother to mention ken and shinjiros issues until it was over. and the cop in the answer, who dismissed what ken saw. but i will never be mad at ken for his anger. he DESERVED to be angry.

    Nice video, I never got the hate for Ken either, before even playing the hame for the first time with reloaded I knew that people hated Ken, I figured it was because his relationship with femc, or because he's useless in battle compared to the rest of the seed members, but after finally playing the full game this year, and also seeing videos over the years about the story of persona 3 I felt that it was overblown, yeah ken comes off as a know it all kid, and acts like he's older than what he really, but if anyone notice its a coping mechanism, ken loosed everything and was force to grow up fast, he didn't get the time to really grieve since he was set on revenge for his mom, plus since he's a kid and didn't wont people to look down on him and belittle or petty him for his age or lost. I never used ken that much in battle since I had my favorite already but ken is great character that hammers the theme of the game about facing death and lost and over coming it to face the future with a better view.

    Ken is my favorite character is all of persona. So it sucks to see he is so hated because he… was the reason Shinjiro died. Which, I don’t believe in anyways. Even is Tayaka didn’t show up I do think there’s a strong case Ken would’ve backed down. And….Shinjiro was already sentenced to die from the start…
    But honestly, a lot of the hate outside of October 4th comes from the fact he’s a kid. Which, I get, kids can be annoying and people don’t like them but I think it’s completely wrong to hate someone just because they’re a kid, especially such a truamatized and suicidal one. Like yeah! No shit he’s annoying! He’s a 10 year old still growing and unsure of himself! And he saw his mom die in front of him which threw it all off! It just sucks to see people ignore him and write him off because of his age compared to the rest of the cast. I’m so glad Reload gave him more love. Like you said the link episodes help but I also believe the reworks to the October 4th scene both helped strengthen his and Shinji’s arcs. Also, the game just making him stronger in general haha
    I really hope Ken appears in a game in the future. Ken himself is such a unique character, being one of, if not the most, youngest persona user is a very interesting concept. Especially one that saved the world before. And this definitely affected him as he grows into an adult. Many people have pointed out that he’s the same age as the Phantom Thieves, which is another interesting dynamic to explore. I think Atlus might be aware of it too since he got a sidequest with the PTS in Persona Q2? Idk man, one of my biggest wishes is a game or something where Ken can meet the Phantom Thieves and finally have people his own age who could understand that stuff.
    Sorry for rambling, like I said Ken’s my fav character. I look forward to your full analysis on Ken

      Really, I don't get what it is about people being so prone to ageism. Ken isn't even that annoying to begin with. Him being a kid shouldn't really mean much in the grand scheme of things. Instead, people basically view kids (and teenagers if you want to differentiate them) and the elderly (to a lesser but still prominent extent) as 3rd class citizens because "they're stupid due to not knowing anything about the word (kids) or being able to have Dementia or Alzheimer's (elderly)". Basically, he's an easy scapegoat because he's too young to be considered a legitimate person. Most people may not be aware of that fact about themselves, but I bet their Shadows (if they were real) would be screaming about their views on people outside the range of 21-65 years of age if you were to ask them. It's not the main reason behind the hatred, but it's a storm cloud that hovers over all the other reasons. It's why they automatically consider him annoying for trying to be mature and why they scapegoat him as Shinjiro's murderer instead of Tayaka (who actually shot the gun that killed Shinji in the first place).
      Also, there's a Persona 5 fanfic on AO3 called Ace in the Hole that has Ken become a Phantom Thief himself. It's a fun read and it's almost complete (just missing 2 chapters last I read it). It also has other surprises that I'm sure you'll like.

    Persona 3 probably has the best individual characters in the modern trilogy, not the best group that is 4, but still characters such as Aigis Junpei and most important for this case Akihiko and Shinjiro are masterfully written characters. So if a character is not written as well as all other characters even if it is a good character then it stands out in a negative way

    Yes he is but to be fair his dynamic with Makoto in P3F originally was near non-existent and as for FeMC, that is a can of worms I will not open. I think where Ken shined though was in the spin-off's, he has some of the best character interactions and development in Q, Q2 and Arena Ulitmax the former offering him great interactions in particular with Akechi and the Phantom Thieves while the latter had a more introspective look at his character. Reload though, fixed pretty much every issue I had with Ken by highlighting that he really is just a poor kid who had everything taken from him and is just trying to find a reason to move forward.

    • @lmrpirate5273

      I don't think an optional romance should be that big of a can of worms. Just don't pursue it and all the potential problems involved with it will disappear into the ether. Sure, it's a bit creepy due to the age difference, but it's still something optional that doesn't impact the story that much even if you go for it for whatever reason.

      Yeah I know right it's like they recognize that charachters need to grow and develop, but then forget that requires them to have charachter flaws so they CAN develop. Or only understand that for the charachters they like, it's the same damn thing with Morgana or Hope from Final Fantasy 13. The hate for these charachters get overblown and people who hate them only want to see them at their lowest points not any of their good traits that make them well rounded charachters.

I was more upset about him, almost taking his life for his mother's murderer. No! She wouldn't want that from her own son. And yet, during the series, he learns a lot to mature so much in the very end.

    My opinion is he is by far the worst member of sees and a horrifically floord character. The thing with floord character is you still have to give them something to make them redeemable but ken hasn't got that because the thing ment to be his redeeming thing is also shinjis death and you cant have the death of a much more likeable character ( that they where partly reposibel for ) be the thing that redeems them without everyone missing the much more likeable character and imagining how things could have been if they weren't dead. Also the hole femc thing where alot of people see femc as in the wrong ken is basically froceing himself on her as evan when she is just trying to be nice he gets way to in to it for me to not see it in that way. Also the fact he is incredible obnoxious, your character can be floord and still be got but there is a limit and ken gos past the limit. So in conclusion he is a just sbad character and person and frankly doesn't get hated enough

    • @lmrpirate5273
      @lmrpirate5273 4 месяца назад +1

      Can you repeat that with about 90% less slang? I'm not from wherever you got your dialect from, so I don't know what "floord" means. Also, Ken is an adolescent while FEMC is a later stage teenager. You can easily just not go down the romance option during Ken's social link. As for Shinji:
      Takaya fired the gun that ended Shinjiro's life. Not Ken.
      I don't get why people can't blame the actual murderer for butting into a conversation that could have probably ended with Ken being talked down from both his revenge and suicide plot and blame Ken for wanting to confront Shinjiro (who might I add, just like with FEMC, could have easily just went along with the rest of S.E.E.S. to fight the strength and fortune shadows and Ken wouldn't have been able to stop him from doing so even with his Persona). Ken wasn't the one who fired the gun. It's like if you have a significant other and you took them out to a mall on a date, a terrorist blows the mall up, kills the SO and I came up and blamed YOU for their death instead of the person who planted and detonated the bomb in the first place. All of this not even mentioning that Shinjiro was taking those Persona repressing drugs and was going to die to their side effects soon enough anyway even if he didn't confront Ken or Takaya didn't ambush them.

    • @milliegirl2005
      @milliegirl2005 4 месяца назад

      @@lmrpirate5273 I'm not saying I blame Ken for shinjiros death, that was enviable I'm saying that you can't have the death of someone more likeable be the thing to help redeem another character and not have people wishing that the one who died had lived instead of this less likeable character. Also frooded means has problems, and I didn't know that wasn't a commonly used word sorry. Also the ken love line being optional still doesn't make up for the fact that the entire latter have from rank 6+ has him very openly flirting with femc and that just makes me uncomfortable.
