Keybored showed that the stock force breaks that Keychron uses are too thin or compressible. Replace them with two layers of cut tape and the force break should actually work.
I followed Keybored's advice with my Q3 and did the force break mod. I didn't remove their built in breaks, just put two layers of painter's tape next to them. I also did the tempest tape mod using 3 layers of tape. With those two mods it sounds pretty good to me with just the otherwise stock setup using Gateron Pro Red switches.
@@Maelstrom01 i gonna get my q3 delivered either tommorow or Monday. I actually preordered the k8 pro on kick starter but its taking too long thus go ahead with ordering the Q3. Do i need to remove the keycaps and switches to do those 2 mods u mentioned? the tape mod and force break mod? Or i can just remove the back cover and do it without removing all the switches.
@@jamesmadison3108 You do not need to remove the keycaps or switches. Just unscrew the back cover using the provided tool, then apply the tape to the spots on the frame for the force break mod and the pcb for the tempest tape mod. For what it's worth I did also replace the keycaps with some cherry profile ones, and it wasn't too hard. I used the keycap remover it came with and it was fairly painless, if a bit time consuming.
@@Maelstrom01 noted with thanks. i also planning to use the stock red switches. after u put that tempest tape mod, does it affect the flex? and with that tempest tape mod, did u take out the stock case foam or leave it in?
@@jamesmadison3108 @james madison I did 3 layers of painter's tape on the pcb for the tempest mod. I didn't do a good comparison beforehand to get a sense of the flex before adding the tape. I feel like now there isn't that much flex, so it may have reduced it. But it feels good to me and sounds better. I did leave the stock foam in. You could experiment with taking the foam out vs leaving it in. You could also start out with just one or two layers of tape on the PCB to sew how it feels/sounds. Luckily with painter's tape it's easy to remove if you want to.
@@darkinertia2 I do the same but that's just cause my dexterity on my ring and pinky is shit (for context on my dominant hand it's almost like Middle and ring fingers move in sync when trying to move one
@@darkinertia2 Kinda why I enjoy Taeha Types and others who touch type really well. I can do it but my record is only 125wpm, trying to get to 150 but need to utilize my right middle, ring and pinky finger more since they're the fingers left that are doing little lol.
For the rear case ping, i dont like using the butyl based sound dampener. because its such a pain to remove. I have found i can get great results using 2-3 layers of just regular black electrical tape. It dampens the sound really well, its super cheap, and if you decide to remove it it doesnt become a giant mess. In addition it doesnt add a ton of thickness which becomes a problem with some case tolerances.
I've really wondered how tape material impacts the pcb tape mod. like cellophane plastic vs paper vs thick plastic like electrical vs duct tape and others
@@RamtheCowy the tape mod is applying low tact blue or green painters tape to the back of the PCB. I wouldnt reccomend using electrical tape on it because it will likely come off and isnt rated for low-tact. But i am talking about applying the electrical tape directly to the bottom case inside the housing. I tried with the painters tape and it doesnt seem to do anything. The electrical tape really insulates the sound and deadens the ring. Otherwise it sings like a bird.
I love how perfectly chaotic they are when they are together and one of them is being nice to the other and the other is struggling to do what the other literally does for a living
Building my first custom keyboard right now as well! Keychron K4 V2. I’m actually gonna use the number pads sometimes so the 96% sounded good to me. Gateron Ink Black V2 with TX films. Used the foam that came with the packaging and the switches are gonna be lubed and replaced with 62g springs. Pretty excited! The first couple of keys sound pretty good already even with the metal/aluminum sides off and placed on billiard felt (building it on my pool table lol). I’ve tried to replace the stabilizers but it’s been a pain in the a$$ because Durock plate mount stabs don’t seem to actually fit the plate cutouts exactly so I have to shove them in there lol.
Aww this was such a fun video! And your brother is adorable! As a massive Fire Emblem fan, it made me happy to see that keycap set! Thank you for sharing ^///^
Hey Hipyo. Im a super noob on keyboards, except I know I love them, and can't wait to custom build one. My question, how lame would it be to ask you to do a video on keyboard terms. Like thock, blessed, cursed etc. I have no idea what all of those mean :D
Is there any specific type of tape you need to use? The blue one looks like painters tape, but then you changed to green and not sure what type that is. Thinking of adding the kilmat and tape to mine, but keeping the rest of my Q3 the same (baby kangaroos and stock key caps for now)
introduce him to keybr In 2 and 1/2 weeks I learned QWERTY touch typing and hit 50 WPM before realize I fucking hate QWERTY. So then over the next month I learned Colemak. Now 2 months later I am 60 wpm + average, and still getting faster, hit over 70+ top. Its 7$ for full access lifetime, and a nice graphical dashboard with statistics for various aspects of your speed, accuracy, and rate of improvement. I highly recommend to anyone who is a slow typer and want to learn touch typing. There's no better time to start than when you just got a new keeb and are excited to enjoy typing on it.
Love the videos Hipyo, Your to funny now. I remember a build you did didnt take all hotswappable switches. Anyway to know how thats the case? I want to buy a bugest PCB and case.. but go all out with keys, caps, and stabs.
Hey not sure if this is the best way to ask this. I'm trying to build a keyboard but I'd want a special feature in it. I'm trying to include a jog wheel that can easily rewind and fast forward audio/video as I do this frequently for my work. Most keyboards I've seen use the wheel to control volume. I'd also like the wheel to be on the left. I intend on 3d printing the case so stuff like that isn't a problem. But I don't even know if what I'm trying to do is possible. Do you have any advice?
