  • Hi, fish friends! Here is a walkthrough of the two DIY Bog Filters I built for my pond for less than $100.
    Bog filters are fantastic at fighting off algal blooms in the water column, especially if they are well planted with bog plants, like the horsetail reed shown here.
    This is my first RUclips video so if you enjoyed, I would super duper appreciate it if you hit the subscribe button to be notified of my future uploads.

    If you put a uv light in the filter, or through the pump line and you will never have green water again. I built a bog filter as well to help with filtering etc. Haha I did clay pellets, they float and float into the water. You need pea gravel on top.

    I must say, that is a very good idea, especially for a above ground pond.

    Cover it with shade cloth. I've had a 150 gal stock tank for 4 years now in my backyard with koi and goldfish. Sump tank is in the ground with a old dock float as a dwc bed. Water has always been clear. Next door neighbors tree shades that area til about noon everyday, that definitely helps. Sun is your enemy!

      Yes!! I totally agree. I’m getting ready to relaunch this project now that it’s warming up and will be installing a shade sail for sure

    I have heard (while researching flytraps,) that clay pellets can add nutrients. Also lava rock has better surface volumes that beneficial bacteria love. I have a pond in Wisconsin USA and it works great even in our harsh winters! This year I'm expanding my bog filter and water volume! Thx for your video.

      I would believe that! I use lava rock in tons of my other tanks with great success.

    Hey Nat, how did it work for you? The algae grows because it has a food source (look up "nitrogen cycle"). A bog fliter helps as it pulls poop from the tank, but also has plants feeding - which in turns reduces the amount of food for algae. So if the water is still green, try adding more plants and or increasing the size of the bog. There are a ton of good videos out there that provide an in-depth discussion on setup and how it works. If your water has clear, ignore my ramblings :)

      Hey Alex!! The Bog Filter was up and running great for a while. I ultimately broke this tank down though because our winters have been getting colder here each year. The next bog filter I set up, I want to use a bigger group of plants like you suggested! Thank you for your kind comment. I recently made a bog filter for one of my inside aquariums with house plants and will be posting a video of that setup soon!

    • @inspectorseb2887
      @inspectorseb2887 Год назад +1

      @@chrisashley6245 Big gravel at the bottom and then smaller ones at the top. I use lava rocks since its more porous hence more space for the beneficial bacteria to colonize and break down the ammonia. I'm planning on adding some marginal plants to increase the filtration capacity

    howdy Nat , I subbed . I have a big stock tank full of goldfish and rosy reds that I built something very similar to this but I used lava rock instead of the Leca but otherwise same idea .
    I grow lettuce and some herbs in my filter .

      Thank you so much for the sub!! How did you come across this video if I may ask? I would love to get my views up over here on YT. I’m much more active on TikTok if you are on that platform too. And also - the LECA started floating and become a real problem so if I were to do this again, I would definitely go with 100% lava rock and save the LECA for a canister filter.

      @@stockmytank your video was suggested to me , probably because I watch tons of aquarium videos .
      I'm not on tiktok I'm barely online at all just youtube .
      good to know about the Leca , I buy red lava rock at Lowes or home depot its about $5 a bag . some of it will float at first but in a day or so it will sink .
      as far as more views , I suggest you sub to Father Fish , he does a livestream every morning , if you chat in the live stream lots of folks will sub your channel from the community .
      hope that helps .
      I am excited to see more of your content please make more videos , you did very well with this one !

    How to set up tube i dont get it

    • @stockmytank
      @stockmytank  2 года назад +2

      The tube connects the pump. The box the pump comes in will tell you what size tubing you need to buy. The tube then directs the water into the bog filter by pouring water into the bottom of the plastic deck box. Hope that helps!

  • @motivatedconfidence6931

    This is awesome! Does the water have to naturally move up just because the filtering medium is rock, or is that true as well for all the DIY videos that use poly batting/sponges/etc? Most of those videos have it coming in via the top and I started building one that way but now I'm wondering if I should start over... I'm such a newbie so I appreciate any advice :)

      Bog filter is a great idea. Your delivery and screen presence is awesome. Here’s a bit of feedback I hope you don’t mind. First, you want to use black tube and not clear. Clear will allow more algea growth inside the tubing because it’s exposed to light. Next, this wasn’t a short so there’s no time limit, you should have shown us the working filter longer, even just 20 seconds. It also would be great to see the results say a week later to show it was going to clean up the algae. Look forward to updates. Wish you continued success.
