- Today I'm reviewing a very unusual vehicle - a Maserati 3200 GT. I've reviewed one a lot like it recently, but this has a few key differences. It's a manual, and an Assetto Corsa - meaning this is the more sports orientated version of the car. But, can it be good enough to justify the allegedly ruinous running costs?

Those boomerang lights in the back were the coolest thing when the car came out when i was a young boy drooling over cars in magazines.
Shame the Yanks killed them though!
TVR made boomarang lights on the T350, and they were even cooler I think!

I still love them! With LED technology you'd think carmakers today would be able do do shapes like this or even crazier ones easily, but unfortunately every car looks the same from the back. It's one of my biggest gripes with modern automotive design...
@@brucewayne5342 It's all the rules and legislation in different countries and markets that forces a particular shape so this leaves a very small window for creativity.
I don't see why some people see the 3200 GT as an alternative to a Ferrari or other exotic cars and see it as the poor cousin. A Maserati is what it is and does not need to be compared to anything else as a close second etc. The 3200 GT is a fantastic well made car and has the build quality, performance and styling to go with it. It is exactly what it is, its a Maserati 3200 GT and I appreciate it for what it is. Using this amazing car as a constant close second comparison to other cars I think is very unfair and is usually judged by those who have very little technical knowledge or understanding of what they are talking about. I own a 3200 GT and also several Ferrari's and I can tell you that they are every bit as good a car. If you want a Ferrari then buy a Ferrari.. If you fancy a 3200 GT then buy if for what it is, and not because its a cheap alternative for what you actually want.
what are you talking about????? the Maz is as unreliable a cheap piece of shit as an Alfa ROmeo or FIat. COincidence, all three are Italian?
You're way too biased, people see Maserati as Ferrari's poor cousin cuz Ferrari owned Maserati and marketed them as bargain buy Ferrari's but early cars had notoriously bad build quality and the automatic transmissions are unreliable so they got a bad rep resulting in their used market value to nosedive and that's why people see it as the "poor cousin" but you shouldn't take that as an insult sometimes the poor cousin is more charming and down to earth than the rich playboy.
I am obviously NOT biased AT ALL. I have NO DOG IN THIS FIGHT, while those who OWN or HAVE OWNED Mazs DO. I am reporting t he FACTS I have seen with my own eyes, colleagues, more than one, who bought BRAND NEW Maz Quattroportes and had to return them under the LEMON LAWS brand new.

I do agree with you, having said that, not everyone is as fortunate as yourself.
I own a maserati gransport, lovely car and an absolute blast! But to me it is no knock on the car to say I bought it as a cheaper alternative to the Ferrari I wanted (a 550 or 575, or a 360). Because as much as I appreciate the car on its own merits, and in many ways it is superior to the 550/575 and 360 (I've seen a 550 and 360, so I can appreciate their weaknesses too), it is ALSO an alternative to those cars that is significantly cheaper.
And that's a GOOD thing in its own right! It means I can enjoy the car without as much worry, replace it if need be, etc.
It also means that I am happy to acknowledge that I wanted a Ferrari 550 and settled for a fantastic alternative instead because I could afford it.
So as much as I agree with your advice, and I appreciate the car on its own merits (and recognise it is likely superior to the 360 and 550/575 in many ways too, maybe even as an overall package given its equal speed, low down torque and 4 seats in a sporty package), I also recognise that being a cheaper alternative to the Ferrari I wanted was a part of the appeal!
Would I have bought a maserati gransport if I could get a Ferrari 550/575 or 360 for the same money? No I would have got one of those probably.
The fact this was a cheaper alternative to a Ferrari because it delivered almost as much car for a lot less, was one of the reasons I got one!
I prefer these 'boomerang rear lights' to its newer model!

I have a maserati gransport, I've looked at 3200s before and to be honest, I am a bit torn about the boomerang lights. Sometimes I like them more, but sometimes I think they would have needed a visual update to match the styling of the gransport. They don't quite "go".
Personally I think the gransport just nailed it in just about every way except not having a manual option

These confuse me. From some angles they look gorgeous, other angles they look so wrong.
I don’t really find it gorgeous from any angle. Certain geometries and panels are pretty but from no angle does the whole view impress. From many angles it does the opposite though
I'm the same, it reminds me of the old jelly mould Granada and very dated. The only redeeming thing is the engine, but I wouldn't have one.
It looks like it was in half decent shape at one stage in its life but time and laziness has caught up with it and now it's all a little bit pudgey and soft. You can see where it was once sharp and handsome but the lines have softened and the shape has been lost.

Glad I bought mine before I watched this, it's enough to put anyone off, yes they can have issues as with any 'classic' and parts prices are ludicrous, however it's a shame you didn't review a sorted one and not one with issues, I am sure you could find many Porsche's, Ferrari's etc with issues and give the impression they are all the same, otherwise interesting video. I guess like a film critic you have your views and like to broadcast those to others, but that is just what they are.
Jay the reason you felt the throttle binary (or or off) is because that car actually has a major issue about to play out... there is a worn sensor in the electronically controlled drive by wire throttle body that leads to the binary all or nothing response of the throttle pedal. there is a gebtleman that can be easily found online who disassembled the part and rebuilds it which is far cheaper than the cost of a new factory one (which itself will ultimately fail in the same way)...
it would be worth relaying this go the cars owner.... sell it now lol
@8rick1ane No my mate bought the newer model with the different rear lights In 2010 and after it kicked out in rain on the way home from purchasing it (almost killing us had he not managed to get the back end in check) we set about diagnosing it, I'm an armature electronics engineer and testing the expected values from the throttle body sensors with a my snap on osciliscole I tried to fix it myself reading a guide online.... after failing miserably we contacted a specialist who introduced us....

There's not a lot I can agree with here! In terms of running costs if you know what you're doing and seek out a good marque specialist it really isn't that expensive to maintain if you stay on top of things.
The comment regarding the boot only extending into one wing is because the battery is mounted behind a carpeted door on the other side.
I have a 2002 manual with only 35,000 miles on her and absolutely love it! ❤
The reason the 6 valve engine was not produced, is the fact that optimal / maximum efficiency of airflow is achieved with 5 - Yamaha put intensive research into this...

Nice review! Would like to see a nice F360 Manual review, they are for some reason a very rare thing on YT.
these are fun cars and i feel the last true Maseratis they made of this era. I modified hundreds of these cars 4200 coupes from 2001-2006. They are so inexpensive to purchase today but the issue is obtaining parts is difficult and your left with second hand parts from salvage cars and there are not many of these laying around for parts these days. I was very tempted to buy a Gransport last year but got cold feet after a customer of mine had a Gransport and needed parts and they exceeded the value of the car so he junked it. I hope Maserati revamps their entire line up soon with good cars .
The parts situation is dire, they really need to discount the parts prices for older models, it would help the residual values and they'd sell more genuine parts. They treat them like Ferraris which have a much higher value. Maserati must have the worst car value to parts price ratio of any brand

Already owned a Maserati 3200gt in blue.. Year 2000 manual transmission but was horrible to drive specially towns.. So I transformed it into an automatic1990 transmission from a Mercedes v8.. It's most reliable and marvelous and drives smooth and powerfully wonderful... I can send pictures if anyone interested... And anytime I can change it to its original transmission back...
Thanks Jay. I have a manual one in a fantastic condition - I had an easy fix for the annoying throttle : Spring installed underneath to feel a resistance. It changed everything.
The only other annoyting thing is the plastic of the switches becoming overly sticky.

I had a conversation with Maserati at the time of the introduction and the reason for the tail lights changing for the US market was it was felt that it was too strange or different for US buyers...We have a Gran sport with the 430 engine and the car needs upgraded suspension and wider rubber and a stiffer roll bar and upgraded software and it is wonderful....
I went from a 3200 GT manual to a 550 and then to a 4200 manual and another 3200 manual at the same time! My first 3200 had such a hair trigger throttle, hill starts were a nightmare, it was on a standard exhaust, I enjoyed it apart from the servicing costs, very practical too. After the 550 I bought a 4200 manual - fantastic engine, better seats but the manual gearbox was awful, the 4200 box was designed to be a semi-auto first and foremost and you can tell. My second 3200 manual was awesome, throttle had been modified and it had a Larini exhaust. Compared to the 550 though they are miles away which is reflected in what you pay. Compared to a 456 auto I'd possibly pocket the change and have a 3200 auto or 4200 CC. I prefer the 3200/4200 to a DB7 and first gen XK/XKR but the second gen XKR 4.2 is the unsung hero in the sub £20k GT market for me - quick and reliable with sensible parts prices, the 5 litre though is apparently not as reliable. 911s whilst I like have been the most unreliable cars I've ever owned so wouldn't consider a 996/997 at all unless it was a 997 Gen 2.

@@Eidrian111 My wording was wrong re the Maser gearbox - they never envisaged offering it as a manual so the linkage to the transaxle is under developed and frankly shit. As your user name suggests you talk shit - the 996 and 997 Porsches suffer badly from IMS bearing failures and the Jag XK 5.0 have problems with the injectors which have catastrophic effect. I'm off for a drive now see ya

Do you know what’s the percentage of failure of the IMS bearing on 996/7? Less than 8% of all 996/7 have that problem. It is really notorious because it may lead to a 20k +labor engine fix. And jags 5.0 “injector problems “doesn’t even remotely lead to catastrophic failure on the engine, actually there isn’t any mayor issue with the injectors, the main issue with the 5.0 is the water pump, that CAN lead to catastrophic failure. But this isn’t bigger or more common than ALL the bmws with the turbo 6 cylinder that need new water pump every two years. Go ahead, take a drive and leave all that bs on the road.
@@sainta2667it's not a great manual box, I've test driven one and ended up with a gransport and the CC instead.
It's still awesome being a manual, but I felt the manual box in my old 6 speed Alfa 916 gtv v6 had a better feel, and of course gated manual Ferraris are better yet.
However, with tightening of the linkage and a gated conversion, the 4200 manual box can become great!
Having said all this, a manual is still a manual. I would have gone for the same manual box in a gransport if it had been offered, but I found the advantages of the gransport outweighed the disadvantage of CC instead of manual
I think driving a Maserati is cooler than driving a Ferrari. It's less "See Me ! See Me!!",

Ideal car for you neighbor to own.
You get to hear her start up,admire its shape,get a lift when she is running right,BUT don't have any worries about the maintenance costs or restless nights thinking about the maintenance costs.
The GT with Boomerang rear lights is a classic already! The manual version is a GEM
The first proper test I've seen on the Assetto Corsa. I do remember having a test drive of the standard 3200 GT when it came out, and the Official Dealer made me very wary of the fly-by-wire throttle, they clearly didn't have much confidence in it.
I always fancied an Assetto Corsa in Maserati red, and I think it would have mainly been bought by Maserati aficionados rather than by simply business purchasers of the time, so if you can find one they should have been maintained in reasonable condition.
Undoubtedly, the 4200 Coupé was a better prepared car than the 3200, although less stylish in my opinion, and I would look forward to a review of it.

I owned number 23 in the same colour but unfortunately Auto. A special car, the steering was a little light but nice and fast, and the engine felt super strong after sorting out a few issues. Wish mine had been a manual (although crankshaft endfloat was a worry). If the steering on this one didn't feel very sharp there could have been something a bit worn. For example to replace some ball joints you have to change the whole wishbone. I want a 550 :( This was as close as I could sortof get!

I have the V8 Grandsport and it is absolutely stunning - after many attempts at trying to own a decent Italian car including a Dino 246gt which ended in near bankruptcy - 3K for a clutch change, this is the one that excites me the most - I don't drive fast, quick or silly and don't need to - the constant burlbe reminds that if I wanted to I could...... Nice review Mr.
Your GS will cost you the fat end of 3k if you get the fly wheel done at the same time (advisable).

3k for a clutch in a gransport is cheap!
But to be honest, my Gransport has been cheaper than both of my previous Alfa's, mainly due to timing chain instead of belt. A clutch on a gransport that's not driven daily could last 10 years, which is 2 timing belt replacements on a v6 busso - and almost the same cost!
Of course, if I needed suspension or other work the costs will exceed Alfa's, but I was ready for that and so far it's been cheap to run
The weird pedal feel sounds to me like poor calibration of early eThrottle cars, as this one has. I remember an episode of Wheeler Dealers where this was a specific concern of Mike and Edds, and I think it turned out to be a potentiometer and they bought a re-conditioned electronic throttle body, which seemed to fix the throttle response.
James, it would be good to see you review a late model Grandsport...say 2006 or 2007...which is supposed to have resolved all of the issues. There are quite a few for sale in the UK at present.
The fact that it's still running is proof that miracles happen.
Re the Boomerang tail lights. I can assure you that in Australia they were outright banned, while the existing models were legislatively considered good enough to remain with their owners, but no additional ones were to be imported. In addition, I was informed from a separate source that the same problem occurred in a lot of western European countries such as the US and UK. Instead of changing the rear lights, Maserati simply focused on the newer model that was due in a short time.

Fix fly by wire, a decent map and you have a great car
Did the power steering groan at full lock? The one I test drove many years ago did :( Nice car but I suspect the build quality was lower than required of a premium brand.

You made a great point on maintenance of cars like this, we were unable to find a decently-maintained Jaguar below 15.000 - 20.000€ in Germany since people buy a car they cannot and should not afford, cheap out on maintenance and ruin a great car in the process.
the 4200 is the better car, but i like the visuals of the 3200 gt better.

That style of interior vent first appeared on the Alfa 33 in 1982, versions of them have been used in the F40 and Diablo plus numerous other Italian supercars and later Alfas

Maserati are one of those companies that everyone loves but which seldom seems to provide substance to match the style and image. Nice looking and sounding though.
After your last review I got very close to buying that Yellow one for sale ! But when I found out I would need £5k a year for maintenance and even the simplest parts are on back order from the factory I was scared off by the Independent Specialist who would be looking after the mechanics. But they are so tempting . . . . . . . . . . . The looks, sound, and the price to buy.
My Granddad had one back when they first came out. Lovely car, manual, pale blue with white wheels and the cream interior. He loved it for about a year or two.
One day the electrics failed while coming down a hill, since the brakes are electronically controlled he had no brakes and hit the back of a truck writing off the car.
Just another thing to consider before buying.
Buy a really good example and it’ll cost you far less than that to maintain. Between Autoshield, Trident Spares and David Askew, all parts are available.
My conversation was with McGrath who have the yellow one still for sale. To be fair I drive 15k miles a year in Spain and needed some form of reliability ! A lot to ask I guess !
Martin Boulden I understand and they’ve advised you correctly. I’ve not known anyone in the UK use one as a daily for a good while. A 3200 would at some stage let you down if doing 15k a year in it. Buy a Gransport, really solid outstanding cars, like always, if you start with a good one.
Such a shame as that yellow one just looks so delicious ! They did say a Q/Porte would make more sense and be cheaper !

Maserati is to me the romantic image of Italy. Maserati & Lamborghini are the dream cars of mine , if I were to have the money and I've already got my Aston Martin.
Do a video about the Ferrari 550 being a cheap alternative to a Bugatti Veyron, so then people can start making little of that car too.. The 3200 GT is a cheap alternative to no car...

hp, DIN PS and kW are simple units, so are lb•ft and Nm.
Most don't even know what a Nm really is anyway. Actually, the value itself is quite useless, if you don't know the gear ratio or wheel size and the vehicle weight.
It (finally) dawned on me the other day where Kia got its styling cues for the Stinger GT (especially rear) - this Maserati. Is it mere coincidence both are front-engine/ RWD and have twin-turbo V-engines of a bit over 3.0l?

Bi -turbo...that sounds like someone needs to turn the boost up and see what sort of utter maniac of a car and hoonmobile you can make. You could probably map out the throttle response, too.
one of the first with fly-by-wire throttle, and they fail. Suspension set up and toe front and rear change the handling a lot. Battery is in one side of boot, fuel tank ahead I think. Lovely engine. Gotta do your own maintenance....

Over the years i have often looked at these and have chickened out- however, they are now going up in price so i may have missed the proverbial boat. We shall see.
The boomerang tail lights weren't carried over because of one reason: cost. LED tail lights were a lot more expensive to manufacture at the time. Which is a real shame.
Sort of like an upscale Toyota Supra (the old one) not a sports car outright, but sports gt.
If only it had a flat plane crank, maybe we could make an exception........

Makes big difference when you switch from Ferrari and test other cars. Previous review of 3200gt, before owning 550 Maranello, was completely oposite and Assetto Corsa should be even better as regular. Next review try after Fiesta )
Badge, Price, Sound, Interior, Comfort, Exterior, Engine, Gearbox = Tick. Suspension, Steering = Crash. Sadly i won't be buying one, after reading informed comments.
Part of owning a car is making it your own. It looks to me like most of the issues on this car can be mended with proper engine mapping, an aftermarket fly-by-wire throttle etc. It's not like you'll void the warranty, is it?
After all that's done, you might actually end up with a baby Ferrari, and it will remain reasonably cheap.

Throttle bodys cost about 2 to 3 grand to put right plus the rest faults on this well made cars

When she gets into a groove she loves it, until that happens it aloof and vague. After that she really starts talking to you. Is this a car or a woman? If you took it out for a track day and were rewarded with a win, would you have to buy it a ring, promise to buy it a garage complete with hardwood floors and stainless steel appliances?

We all know it’s not a Ferrari & not even in the same category (I know Maserati are owned by Ferrari)
It’s a GT & even described by Ferrari when it was brought out as your ‘every day car’ rather than a sports car...
I do agree with him on the running costs though as I considered buying one myself only to find that things like the brakes & clutch had to be replaced every 10k miles & when you’re talking £2500 for a clutch that can only be done with genuine Maserati parts & £700 for a set of pads it ain’t cheap?
It should’ve been compared to a Jaguar, Mercedes or a BMW coupe as that’s the category it’s in?

Indeedski...beautiful design in and out...and in theory a stunning engine...however a larger capacity and drop the turbos and this should sound magical...however 3200s sound like leaf blowers! - all woosh and no character - lightening boost take up..but.. as for mpg, ...expect single figs if driven with any vigor - suspension seems wayward - keeping within one lane at continental speeds is a real eye opener - wouldnt say no to an EV version of this ......after suspension has been sorted by Lotus
Larini exhaust makes them howl, maybe not single figures, mine used to get down to 12 or 13 when driven hard!

That 'hair trigger' throttle is due literally to a 'claw' that scratches certain electronic sensors every time you use it. It's a £2k oe fix or there's a bloke somewhere oop North who fixes the unfixable sealed units in his shed. Even if I was offered one of these for free I would still pass.
1st Qte: Maserati also made a prototype (engine) with six (6) valves per cylinder, which is...nice" Unqte. NO, it isn´t. It is idiotic and plain madness, as evidenced that no-one has put that into successful production.
2nd Qte: "rumours says that it was something with this manual gearbox that caused many engine failures in these cars".. Maybe they forgot to change gears..?? They´re not otherwise an integral part of each other beside the clutch. Bizarre statement.
What a gorgeous car. Then some drip plonked different God awful tail lights on and stuffed it up. Pity.
And much much less reliable, or are Ferraris as horriby unreliable as Maseratis?

This car desperately needs fresh suspension bushes, I'll wager. After that, let's evaluate the steering and handling. I'm neither 'defending' nor 'picking on' the Maserati, this happens to every old car. Yet, it hardly ever comes up in our evaluations of them. Instead, people think: 'Well, these old cars just are not nearly as stable and precise as what we have today'.

I DIY-replace ALL the rubber bushings in ALL the vehicles I buy. It's a big hassle, it's not exactly free, but it's absolutely worthwhile. Well, only if you'd like your car to drive as it should...
A far from good-looking car in my opinion. Combine that with the high maintenance costs and the dubious desirability of Maserati generally, and it wouldn't ever make my shortlist.
Take the engine away you have a car no better than a ford mondeo ghia x, other than the glorious engine noise I’ve not seen such an uninspiring car in my life!
