- The Changing dash lines are the basis of China’s claim to sovereignty over 90% of the South China Sea. This claim is based on the U-shaped 11 nine-dash line etched on a map in the 1940s by a Chinese geographer, then 9 dashed lines in 1952, and currently, the 10-dash line in mid-2023.
For long, China has argued that its claim over the South China Sea is historical in nature. Several Chinese analysts and academics contend that the islands of the South China Sea were first discovered by China’s Han dynasty more than two millennia ago.
Accordingly, Chinese missions in the third century A.D. to Cambodia made accounts of the Paracels and Spratlys. Then between the 10th and the 14th century, during the period of Song and Yuan dynasties, Chinese accounts show the South China Sea to be within China’s national boundaries.
Beijing relies on documentary and archeological evidence-indications of Chinese activity in the SCS spanning thousands of years-to support China’s sovereignty claims. At first glance, this proffered evidence may appear to be sufficient proof of China’s claims of sovereignty, especially when China’s sovereignty is assumed, and evidence is sought to support these claims.
However, this historical rights argument has been challenged on several fronts. First, there is insufficient proof that China has controlled the South China Sea after the mid-17th century. Indeed, after a burst of seafaring exploration during the Ming dynasty between 1368 to 1644, China’s emperors largely shut their empire off from the seas, as a consequence, there is scarce cartographic proof of China’s rights over the South China Sea.
Most of the land features and islands within the South China Sea are just microscopic bits of earth with little history behind them and basically no civilians living on them.
In addition, the archeologists who discovered archeological evidence in the SCS are Chinese and in some cases are sponsored by Beijing, potentially biasing them to conclude that the evidence proves China’s ownership of the islands and disregard other potential sources of the evidence such as shipwrecks, temporary stops by Chinese ships, or even planting of the evidence by interested individuals or groups.
In referencing China’s historic claims, Beijing refers to the Chinese people and not to any particular government or country. These statements show that Beijing views China as a cultural group of people, rather than as a particular nation-state or government. With this viewpoint, China looks at the evidence of the activity of Chinese people in the SCS and the evidence of Chinese claims of sovereignty over the SCS as inextricably intertwined.
The fact that the vast area of the South China Sea has been a common fishing ground for centuries not only for the Chinese but also for people living in modern states of the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia. Historical records may not favor China in the continuing debate on the control of the South China Sea, through which as much as $5.3 trillion in global trade passes annually.
To further disprove China’s claim of historical rights, several ancient Chinese maps, dating as far back as 900 years ago, to the Song and Tang dynasties. All the maps showed that China’s southernmost territory was the island of Hainan. Additionally, the 1947 Constitution of the Republic of China, also identified Hainan as the country’s southernmost part, raising questions over what would later emerge as the nine-dash line claim.

Let the bounty of the earth be shared to any country entitled to it. The UNCLOS of 1982 - the maritime laws of the oceans and seas must always prevail and be complied with in good faith. It is clearly defined by the Arbitral Ruling wherein it was followed and observed by the coastal States around the world delineating their maritime boundaries except china - a supposed rich country and member of the UN does'nt want to abide by the ruling because of its own historical with no legal basis and rejected by the Arbitral Tribunal. China has no claims in the West Philippine Sea:
The western edge of the Philippine Sea is the archipelago of the Philippines.
China does have, on the other hand, legitimate claims on the South China Sea that date back all the way to 1946, and were created by the Republic of #China (the internationally recognized government of all of China at the time), along with the assistance of the US navy.
Oh, and while we’re at it, I think that I should remind you that at the time that the #US was assisting the #ROC in officially laying claims, the Philippines was still under US control. They explicitly told the #Philippines that, according to the Treaty of Paris (1898), the islands of the #SouthChinaSea were not a part of the Philippines.
The very sad thing is that even The Republic of China 1947 constitution indicates that Hainan Island was its Southernmost Territory, China can change its story, make evidence but real history exposed China's lies.
Is it? There's Treaty of Washington that include those features outside the reference line of the Treaty of Paris.

That is not true. According to international law, China has no claims in the West Philippine Sea or in the international waters of the South China Sea. In other words, China has no business building naval presence or artificial islands in the Spratleys, Scarborough shoal, and the international waters of the Soth China Sea. That is the reason why many countries and their navies are backing up the Philippines in the South China Sea, while no one is backing up China in its illegal behavior in that region.
