Same, that line was the tipping point and actually got me to cry. I already related to Moonees situation and relationships but once she said that it just broke me

I just watched this by accident tonight. It was on the TV while I was making dinner. From the first minute, Prince had me captivated. She's a better actor than most adults. Great movie.

As soon as they started running I started freaking out because the rest of the film was so grounded and real. I guess the ending is supposed to be ambigious - like maybe they didn't actually run there - it was just the fantasy she wished would happen.
Andy Mckay The ending actually is a homage to the ending of Truffaut‘s movie The 400 Blows. The scene where Monee is having breakfast in the hotel is as well, and overall the two movies have much in common. I feel like a pretentious film school student typing this though haha.

The kind of movie that gets you in tears without killing off a character is often the most compelling kind of movie.

I lived in Orlando.. one day I went off onto the frontage roads.. I saw children pouring out of motels loading up into a school bus.. beautiful children. Then I get back onto the Interstate & see all the signs to Disney. It was one of the most sobering realities I have ever witnessed.
*Spoilers*
I LOVED the ending of this film and was genuinely surprised when I saw that others didn't understand it and/or hated it. I suppose there's several possible interpretations, but for myself I viewed the children running off to Disney World as Jancey's fantasy of what she would do while Moonee is crying at her front door. You can tell from the look in her eyes, her posture, and the way she's breathing that she's thinking of grabbing her friend's hand and running off because that's all she knows she can offer. However, there's a few clues with the adults that reveal what really happens: as Moonee runs away from the Magic Castle, there's one short clip of Bobby watching her run off - he obviously knows where she's running to because he's so involved in her life and knows Jancey lives in the direction she's headed. Then there's a few shots of Jancey's grandmother calling to Jancey about lunch and eventually realizing that Moonee is at her door and something is wrong. My understanding of the ending is that while Jancey and Moonee are "running away", Jancey is simply fantasizing about helping her friend while her grandmother comes to the door and asks Moonee what's wrong; Bobby comes over from the Magic Castle to explain what's going on and takes Moonee back to the social workers. Depicting what's actually happening rather than Jancey's fantasy would've ended the film on such a low point that it wouldn't work with the rest of the film's vibe, which is seeing the world through the rose-colored glasses of childhood yet still singed by the harsh truth of life. Knowing this makes the depicted ending even sadder imo.
That would explain how they got into Disney World without tickets, LOL.
@@Gemnist98 I mean being a kid that's as small as a 7 year old while there are HUNDREDS of families entering in Disney at one time its probably easy for a child to slip by without notice. I don't think the purpose of the ending was suppose to be realistic, instead it is symbolic of Moonees and Haileys life together and it really ties into the entire movie. To me, it symbolizes that although there is sadness, poverty, and rebellion in their life, it is covered through the happiness of having a care free life such as a child would have. Like it was said in the video, in many ways Hailey is a child because she ignores her responsibilities and just has fun with it. Jancey and Moonee run off to Disney World to run away from their problems, their sadness, their responsibilities. Throughout the whole movie, we see struggle and fun paired together. Running to Disney world gives the same vibe as Clarice said in their comment. If Moonee was taken away by social service without any help from the motel or the community it just wouldn't feel right.
And also grabbing someone and "running away" is what she first learned from Moonee when she first hung out with her they grabbed Jamcey and took her through town to the ice cream shop, so here Jancey is doing the same but going further to possibly the only other place she knows in Orlando.
this is definitely my favorite interpretation of the ending.

The Florida Project was film perfection, taking us through every range of emotion. I'll automatically watch anything Sean Baker makes.
The Florida Project was so good, it didn't just feel like a movie, it felt like a documentary.
This is one of my favorite movies since I've lived in Florida all my life. I was fortunate enough to grow up just slightly above the type of financial situations as these kids but I still relate to the adventures and feel a huge connection to this movie since It's basically like looking outside my window.

I found it to be revolutionary when it came to storytelling, through the eyes of these kids.
I try to forget, but the share optimism and sense of a new adventure every day, was amazing as a child.

Thanks for giving this film the props it deserves. I have to admit, these characters are people I'd often groan at and avoid on the street, but I suppose that's the joy of this medium and the greatness of this film. It shows them as the 3-dimensional people we often don't give them credit for being. Joyous, entertaining and important. I was surprised it didn't get more recognition from the Academy. But hey, like you said........
Carl S. Agreed. This movie is an excellent litmus test for one’s empathetic capabilities. The mother is far from likable 99% of the time, but you strongly empathize with her throughout. You see the mother’s negative influence on Moonie, which then turns into Moonie mimicking her actions in such a way that they negatively influence the shy, respectful child named Jauncey. That chain of events was really powerful, going from the mother to her own child to another person’s child. And then you realize that the mother isn’t the start of the chain; she is a merely a link that learned such behavior from a negative influence in a prior generation. It’s a chain that doesn’t start or end with the mother, but there is hope that Moonie might have “broken” that chain when she was placed in a different family at the end. All in all, it was a remarkable film, and similar to a lot of A24-produced movies, I got to exercise an emotion that isn’t necessarily used all the time (in this case, that emotion is “empathy”).

This movie truly evoked my emotions. Definitely one of my favorite movies I’ve ever seen in my life. The ending made me bawl my eyes out and I can’t thank this movie enough for highlighting such a overlooked issue.
Looks great, definitely gonna watch it now. Not to put on a tinfoil hat but does anyone think it might have not gotten nominated because it sheds a negative light on an aspect associated with Disney (in this case Disney World)? Disney has a lot of power in Hollywood, I could imagine that they would like this movie to not be in the spotlight right now.
yup. oscars are on abc. who owns abc? disney. who always wins best animated, even when there are far more creative animated films? pixar (owned by disney).
The film really doesn't show Disney in a negative light, and even the poverty surrounding it is described as pragmatic. I think it's actually the opposite: it frames Disney as an utopia where these kids can literally be kids all they want, but in reality are forced to make their impoverished world as much like Disney as possible.
Also, if Disney really cared, Escape from Tomorrow wouldn't exist, and Willem Dafoe would not have been nominated for Best Supporting Actor. The Florida Project wasn't nominated for Best Picture because it didn't do well in the other major awards ceremonies aside from Dafoe.

Disney doesn’t want tourists feeling bad about the realities of the outside world when Disney is meant to be a utopia escape for those who can afford it.

like A Silent Voice or Your Name, both films that are arguably just as good in their own ways but snubbed by the Oscars. They don't understand animation, Ghibli only got won once, who gets all the award? Mostly Pixar, and may I remind you that the Social Network and True Grit lost to The King's Speech. The Oscars are out-of-touch, let's just face reality.
That One Guy the fact that Boss Baby won a spot over Silent Voice and Your Name really speaks for itself. However I believe they don't ever nominate anime becasue of the negative stigma surrounding it.
Geoff from Mother's Basement made a video about why the Oscars don't "understand" animation, I recommend checking it out. It's not that there is a stigma around it, it is the idea that Japan is more foreign compared to the West and the age of the Oscar panel plays a factor in them choosing a movie. The Florida Project is about children, The Social Network was a movie about young, up and coming entrepreneurs. Unless it's not about Hollywood itself or WW2, it's wont to get nominated. It's not that anime has a stigma, it's that the Oscars want more attention to themselves and their [Western] industry (hence they chose Boss Baby, Ferdinand, etc). Again, Oscars are out of touch. It shouldn't matter anymore, good movies always go under the radar.

The Florida Project along with Blade Runner 2049 and Good TIme were some of the biggest snubs ever. all 3 are amazing
Agree about good time and The Florida project, they both were amazing
Blade Runner 2049 got five Academy Award nominations and won two. Best Visual Effects and Best Cinematography. This is the film that finally won Roger Deakins an Oscar after all these years. So I wouldn’t say it got snubbed completely.
BR 2049 deserved more as did FP. Best picture, Supporting actresses, but yeah hey, it's the oscars.
And those were the only two awards that it deserved.

Wow, you convinced me that the Florida Project is a greater picture than I already realized it was. You pointed out things that I didn't see, which have made me appreciate the film even more. This was the best picture of 2017; screw the Oscars.
The real reason is cause A24 put all it's effort and campaign money behind Lady Bird.
Other than that it was Dafoe for TFP and Franco for Disaster Artist.
That's the actual reason and also why Good Time was not nominated
Studios always try to focus behind one film cause it's reduces movies competing for campaign $$ and eventual votes.
Plus A24 doesn't have deep pockets like Amazon or Fox Searchlights or Sony Classics or WB
Sudev Sen in my opinion lady bird is the weakest out of all of those fore mentioned a24 films
marketing doesnt have to do with the quality of the film rather what they think will get the most traction and a film like lady bird would get a lot more attention with a female auteur director on her first film dropping gold and a film centered around women when hollywood is reeling from a lot of backlash for their treatment of women. lady bird got the push because it was a liitle more relevant to what the academy would want. good time is something i think the academy must not have watched because by god is it amazing.
id say its definetly better than the disaster artist on a writing level and especially direction and all around ensemble perfoormance. the diaster artist had james franco being decent and a film with a much more interesting premise then the film really conveys. adding people like seth rogen seemed a little cheap and unecessary but didnt hurt the film but we know seth is not a talented actor nor is dave franco.
I agree, The Florida Project and Good Time were exceptional IMO whilst Lady Bird and The Disaster Artist were just good.

Thanks AGAIN, Nerdwriter, for making me want to watch yet another movie that flew past my radar. Too many Marvel films and reboots these days, I tend to ignore new movies too much and end up missing cool stuff like this. Your analysis on Logan made me love it more, the one on Meyeorwitz Story's dialogue opened my world to Noah Baumbach movies, and THIS analysis is making me not only watch The Florida Project--but also appreciate The Little Rascals and Peanuts more.
Jinsoul's Fish Cinema is flourishing right now. Just because a lot of the big-budget films are more formulaic than ever doesn't mean there isn't great stuff out there. Find movie critics that you trust and they'll lead you to the good stuff. I saw this film last week and have known about it for months, thanks to following coverage of the festival circuit.
marvel doesn't have anything to do with this passing under your radar, even if marvel movies didn't exist you likely wouldn't have heard of it unless you're into indie movies sites. let's stop blaming marvel, who outputs formulaic but still enterntaining and well made films for everything. you want to see more movies like this and not marvel? stop letting the only way movies reach you to be ads and mainstream sites. look around. stop blaming. also, if 3 marvels movies is too much for you too give attention to others in a year that has 364 days, you should think about your habits ralating to movies.
Joaum, good point. I shouldn't let the onslaught of reboots and sequels deter me from seeking other movies, but as I already admitted in my original post: "Too many Marvel films and reboots these days, I tend to ignore new movies too much and end up missing cool stuff like this."
I know where my faults lie in missing good original and indie movies, I'm totally aware of it. The point of my comment was to simply thank Nerdwriter for bringing these hidden gems to my attention, not bash Marvel.

Low key I forgot about The Florida Project but when this video popped up in my feed I remember a bunch of emotions coming back from the first time seeing this movie. Such an underrated masterpiece and William DeFoe was wonderful I really hope this is a resurgence for him getting more roles in the future

CinephiliacProdction - asbolutely, but the director also chose 35mm film (except for very few digital shots - mostly night shots and the final scene where the tow girls run through Disneyworld). There's a reason for that - which gains a whole new meaning and significance when that same director shot his previous movie on a modified iPhone.
I'd also add the location being south Florida probably has something to do with it.

You are so right on many points but in particular, the Oscars are somewhat meaningless to any film lover. This movie is so unbelievably good and I picked up on the POV from the camera angle was so engaging. Yeah, phenomenal acting, writing and direction isn't enough for the Academy Awards. I don't think a film has to popular in terms of pop culture nor hyped up and talked about ever to deserve a nomination; in an ideal world the Oscars would represent the best artistry of Hollywood, and sometimes that artistry doesn't last beyond its period, but that doesn't mean it isn't relevant nor a piece of its time. Unfortunately this isn't an ideal world and there are many reasons why I don't like the Oscars myself-- but I can't help but dislike the argument that a film doesn't deserve a nomination just because people don't talk about it anymore for the reason I feel it diminishes the effort of the film on its own merits.
As an editor and someone who also makes short documentary style videos, I love the overall presentation and narration of these videos.

This film devastated me particularly at the end when Haley arrives at the door of her friend in tears that her mother will be taken away. The sequence that follows tore me to shreds. What a beautiful rare vibrant film. I loved your take on it as I haven’t been able to find anyone who felt as I do about this luminous film. Thank you

One of my dad’s best friends from high school created this beautiful movie- I’m so happy for it’s success, and honored that it’s able to be showcased by this amazing channel
that ending though...watched it today, made me cry :(
This was a film that I was very, very skeptical going in, because I’m suspicious about some films that claim to be artistic, just to find out it’s exploitation. I didn’t like the film KIDS for that reason. There didn’t seem to be any redeeming qualities about it, and the filmmaker (Larry Clark) is a questionable person, sexualizing children, going for shock value instead of having a discernible message in his works. This film is different, though. This film has heart, and at its core, it’s a film about the innocence of childhood, how childhood is an adventure, even if the children have no idea what their lives are really like, and it’s a film that shows that people who live on the margins of society have real value and depth, even when they make poor choices. Beautifully shot, wonderfully acted, it draws you in from the start, showcasing these very talented children in their native environment, imagination, and making you cheer for them, even when things aren’t looking good at all. That little girl captured my heart...especially that final confrontation at her friend’s door...wow...and when the last frame ended, I was left just staring at the screen, still trying to process how real it all felt.

GridTV Dafoe's performance in Deathnote was great. He wasn't the reason that the movie was a steaming pile of shit.
I just watched this movie for the first time today....Tears. So many tears.
Great analysis as always, I also felt that the film's use of a telephoto lens was another great way to put the viewer in Moonee's shoes. Whenever a serious moment was shown from the perspective of the kids, the muted backgrounds makes us feel how they feel: Slightly confused and uncertain. Love your videos man!
Sean Baker is a pretty underrated filmmaker.
Actually there's also Starlet (2012)
He's underrated and underfinanced, shot the last sequence of this movie on a 6s plus in disneyland to not having to take permission and go over budget. And tangerine is completely on 3 5s, but all his movies make 7x their budget, so I'd say he's not underrated anymore, people are seeing it..

I hope you're right, I think Dafoe gave my favorite performance of the year. I didn't care for Three Billboards or Rockwell, but he's probably going to win which I mean, I love Rockwell in general so I'd be happy for him but Dafoe really just did an incredible job and he's also one of my favorite actors so he's who I'm pulling for

I watched this movie because of this video and it's one of my favorites movies since then, it doesn't matter how many times I watch it, it tears me apart every time and it definitely deserved more attention than it got

a couple of films i strongly recommend that have children themes and documentary-style acting is "the little fugitive" and "lovers and lollipops". "the Florida project" reminds me of those films.

It's films like this what keep me inspired in the art and ultimately what made me want to get into it. True honest stories keep me engaged over big stars, big FX and lack of plot.
If i'm going to sit down and dedicated 2 hours to something, it needs to show me something i've not seen, needs to be smarter than me and make me think. This film accomplished that for me. Nice piece and I don't relate Oscar accolades with a successful piece either for the same reason you don't..."it's the Oscars".

Great video! I saw The Florida Project two days ago and I absolutely loved it. Easily one of if not the best and most honest look at childhood I've ever seen put on film.

This has to be one of my favorite movies now. I don't usually cry when it comes to movies, but damn, the ending where moonee cries was heartbreaking, and even when they both went to disney world, it was still sad but happy in a way. Bittersweet. I loved it, I still could watch it on repeat and never get bored of it.
Loved watching this in theaters and bringing people to see it. Glad you're giving it more exposure. Sean Baker deserves all the attention he gets

I love big popcorn blockbusters. But as much, at least, I love the small independent / arthouse movies. I even have to say that the older I get, the more they stimulate me emotionally and intellectually. Often i get more excited and enthusiastic than in case of many of the big movies. And I like that nerdwriter keeps picking up these movies as well. Because let's be honest: 80% of the video essays on youtube are about the big movies.
The cinematography looks gorgeous. Very naturalistic but still very carefully crafted.
I'm glad I found this video because now I have something to watch. The way you described and showed the scenes of the film already moved me.

Thanks for cutting Mooney's mom some slack. Too often movie mom's like her are seen as villains but even with all her flaws she's loving and so very young and she's more real to many of us than June Cleaver will ever be. Love your reviews. Love your voice. Keep up the great work.

Dafoe did nothing in this movie, he does not deserve the nomination, he is not going to win. Baby Boss was nominated in the animated category due to a horrible year in animation (only one really good movie - Coco), really bad example.

Perfect point, this film has become one of my favorites of all time and far surpassed all of the films I watched for that year (even having watched all of the Best Picture nominees). Can't agree with this point more, feel like this video was made for me, I kept saying it was snubbed!

what is your point? He made the video it way better than writing some useless comments in rottentomatoes or metacritics. Ans whats the problem if he saw it last week even if it just a random claim u said. Idk why u thinks he acts like he's one of the select few people who have seen it because i clearly dont see him mentioning that the movie is not popular, he just said the movie deserved an oscar.

I just watched it so I can watch this video. The shots were gorgeous and the actors were so great (the kids! AMAZING). I was crying on the inside the whole time (while laughing), it just feels so unfair. When Moonee cried, I cried with her. The shot or her from her mom's POV in the buffet was just amazing. I see moms look at their kids like that sometimes. I'm so glad this film exist.
The Florida Project looks wonderful and I have been waiting to watch it for a while but I have been busy. I think Im going to sit down today and give it a go. Then come back and watch your video.
So, what did you think?
I liked it, growing up my family didnt have alot of money so I could relate to some of the activities and actions that took place throughout the movie. However, I think it has some flaws. I hated the ending, I think a proper ending would have made a hell of a difference. If they would have maybe added some hints that Moonee wanted to go to the magic kingdom it would have had some meaning but without that it was pretty meh. Also I think there should have been more character dynamics with the parents. I get the movie is suppose to be about Moonee but she is a 7 year old actress, she did well but trying to have her carry the movie didnt work. I would have loved to see more emphasis on Halley.
Just a couple of my thoughts.
I finally saw it and thought it was all over the place. A shame, 'cause I quite liked Tangerine. I can forgive movies for being all over the place if they're surreal, but if they're 100% realistic, I have to at least get a feel for some sense of direction or buildup. But that's just me.
Yeah, I never thought of that before but it would have been better if they would have had Moonee mention Disney, but I just lost it when she cried. Little kids really have to go through this kind of thing and it got me.
Yeah it was a great concept... a truthful and necessary story, with many wonderful and heartbreaking moments. I just think it's frustrating when movies seem great, but could've been better. Felt the same thing when I saw The Square the other day. It's a bit harsh to say these movies didn't reach their full potential, but to me, they didn't. :(
