I went to the Pike in the mid 60’s to the mud 70’s. It was showing its age and was run down but still was fun. The roller coaster was my favorite. My father went on it when he was young. My best friend and I went on it for my first time. I hurt my neck and suffered with that for 3 weeks. I went back though and enjoyed it 45 more times. It’s all gone now and so is my best friend. I’m 80 and I treasure those memories.
As a kid back in the late 60s and 70s we lived in the San Fernando Valley, every 4th of July mom and dad, and grandma would take us 5 kids. Now it's 2022 July 4th seeing these clips bring backfun memories of my childhood. Thanks for posting. 👍
As a ten year old I remember that old wooden roller coaster that was such a awesome sight and the accomplishment of first time conquering the Cyclone Racer is a memory I've relished for my 70 years
My Uncle, who lived in Long Beach used to take my Brother and I there. I was too small to ride the roller coaster. I loved the double Ferris Wheel, and Laugh in the Dark ride.
I lived in Long Beach in 1950 My husband was in the Navy. We lived there twice when his ship the USS Sicily was in port there. The Pike was was wonderful and so was the beach and park. There were basketball courts. We lived on the 3rd floor apartment on Pine ave one block from the beach.
great video. I was one of the Marine MP's during the time when the Queen Mary came to Long Beach and there were protestors at the Navy Base. I loved the sights and sounds of walking the Pike. I guarantee you that there was never a dull moment on Long Beach's Nu-Pike. Never. Got my first tattoo there too. Great memories.
Thank you for the memoriesevery spot you showing this video I have been apart of a right been all through the Long Beach Pike as a young 8 to 14 year old so when I see that it brings back memories of the cyclone going into the ocean thank you again
MY FIRST VISIT WAS IN 1954. THE CYCLONE RACER WAS THE FIRST AND LAST TIME I EVER RODE ONE. I WAS 10YRS OLD. I AM 77YRS OLD NOW. THOSE ARE MY FONDEST MEMORIES. THEY HAD A SIDESHOW OF A GIRL THEY CALLED THE MONKEY GIRL. WHEN I GOT OLDER I REALIZED SHE WAS JUST MENTALLY DISABLED THEY ALSO HAD A MAN THAT WAS TURNING TO STONE. MY BEST MEMORIES WERE IN 1961 THRU 1964. MY FRIENDS AND I WENT TO A DANCE CALLED THE "LIDO BALLROOM. THAT IS WHEN THE NAVY WAS THERE. WE WERE CRAZY ABOUT THE SAILORS. ALL OF THAT IS GONE, BUT I STILL HANG ON TO THOSE MEMORIES.
I only been there once when I as about 6/7 back in the 50's. The only thing I recall is the winding slide at the end of the funhouse through a dark tunnel which I though was awesome. I immediately beg my parents to take me through again.
I know what you mean. I'm old enough to have been to the Pike before it was closed for good. The old underground tunnel is still there just sealed off. Now the city wants to reopen the tunnel as a pathway with nothing there. No shops like there were. Sometimes my city aggravates me to no end. They put up all these high end apartments but with nothing to do in the area. It's dumb.
Never got to go there! Only admired it from afar from the beach. This was the mid 70s and just a couple years later it closed. However I did get to go to Disneyland and Magic Mountain. My mom developed her fear of roller coasters at the Pike as she got terrified of the airtime. She claimed she almost flew out but that is what airtime feels like. However she never got over it
To ride that twin rail Nu-Pike Coaster for the first time was sensory overload. I can still recall my first ride on it back in the day. Thanks for posting!
Thank you very much for this video . this brings back som ereally good memories of our child hood.. In Mamory of my sister Arlene "LaLa"Roldan 1969 to 2009.. Ricardo BadBoy Roldan
Great footage...i rode all those rides..im 54 now...i would take the magnolia #4 bus from my neighborhood in wrigley and get dropped off at Lincoln Park and walk across ocean to the pike and hang out all day..it was $5 for a all day pass for the rides..most boardwalk games were 25 cents....it was great....it only cost me 25 cents to catch the bus back home..some arcade games actually let you win cash..if i won money I would take a ride home in a real checkered yellow cab...
In the mid-60s my friends and I used to take the bus from Bellflower to the Nu Pike to ride the Cyclone before we were old enough to drive. Loved the arcade too! Thanks for sharing this footage :-)
When I was a kid I spent many week ends at the pike. There was a haunted house type ride that had a mummy in it that would light up and moan as you passed it. Just before the pike closed, the arm of the mummy had broken off. When the owner went to reattach it, he discovered that it was a real mummy incased in the plaster. It was in the news paper. They speculated that the guy was probably the victim of a crime sindicate killing. Like "Mafia" stuff. lol
Correction. I looked it up and it turns out that there is a story behind the mummy. They say it was an out law named Mccurddy who robbed a train back in 1911. You can look it up on google under "pike mummy". It was discovered by a film crew that was filming an episode of "the six million dollar man" back in 1975. Funny stuff!
Man....you just flashed me back to the age of 5! That was my first roller coaster! And that fun house was a blast!!!!! I was just talking about this the other day too. This was a great memory for me, thank you I had some of my best weekends here, and lately I run into people that have the'lil' devil tattoo and they all say the same, I got that at the PIKE in LB!! This is so great I can't wait to show this to my nephew and what family weekends were all about... :)
Wow, I just was taken back by this Nu-Pike footage. I was born and raised in Long Beach, till my family moved to Los Angeles when I was 13. I ask my family cousins, Aunts, do they remember the attractions at the Pike? The Monkey Cage with real Monkeys, the Plung where my boy Cousins learned to swim, us girl's couldn't go, the Sailors, the beautiful underground tunnel that you could walk through from Ocean Blvd. Straight to the Beach. My Mother took us once to Ocean Blvd. to see a parade, The Miss Universe Contestants were in the Parade and they all were staying at the Laffette Hotel there in Long Beach. My Mom always said that the Pike went down after the Navy pulled out. The Pike was fun for the Sailors but a lot of them were being robbed and sometimes killed. The Navy tried moving their paydays to different days, but it didn't help. Long Beach, the older members use to say lost a lot of revenue when the Navy left. Then the ugly oil drilling started not far from shore, the Nu-Pike was doomed. Still, I'll always remember that long beatiful Pier lined with colorful lamps that went over the waters. That was one of the happy times I can remember with my Mom, Dad, Sister & Brother riding down that Pier in our Car, and of course looking at the beautiul lights coming from the Nu-Pike.
My family would go to the Pike whenever we could talk our dad into it. He would usually say we can go to Newport which is a nicer beach or go to Long Beach and maybe we can catch a few rides after playing in the sand. The answer was always the same, Long Beach and the PIKE! My first roller coaster ride was on the Cyclone Racer and I still remember that laugh from the character on the Laff in the Dark ride, my Dad would always say she laughed just like our Mom. My sister was too afraid to ride the coaster so she would always ask to feed the piano playing chicken right across from the entrance to the Cyclone. My brother of course would tell me all the gruesome details about sailors being beheaded on the ride and they never found the head in the ocean. LOL. The Pike was a blast and a treasured memory from my childhood. My wife and I took our son Don Jr. here when he was pretty young, around 5 years old. It was probably around '77-78 but it wasn't the same and was getting close to shutting down but I wanted to say he had been there. It would sure be fun to bring it back to Long Beach as this area has really been upgraded and looks very nice. Maybe some day...
WOW does this bring back memories, way back some friends & I went to spend the day there at the Pike, on the roller coaster we got stuck on top, brakes locked, the guy working it climbed up to the top & unlocked the brakes & we had no one working the brake, some man ran over just before we hit the cars in front of us at the bottom, then, we went on the double ferris wheel & got stuck at the top of it, the fire dept. had to come get us down, we left after that, 2 times in one day was enough, a guy from the insurance co. came & gave a check for 200.00 but I thought it was just a sore neck from hitting the cars at the bottom, I was 18 & dumb, should have sued, have had trouble with neck & back along with surgeries, oh well had a lot of fun growing up near there & went all the time!!!!
1:07 this ride was featured on the old tv show EMERGENCY, the ride froze and the medics had to rescue the passengers. This place brings back memories from the early 70s growing up in Bellflower and driving down Lakewood blvd to the traffic circle PCH and headed to the beach. A bygone era.
As a 28 year old ...born and raised in Long Beach.....where are all the people who took this away?....who agreed to that?...are they around...old or dead..?...can someone question what the hell was the thinking for tearing down this park?... dont even get me started on the Long Beach Municipal Auditorium...maan...Landmarks that meant something...gone forever...I didnt get a chance to see the beauty ...all the old buildings were getting knocked down left and right when i was a kid.
My only memory of the pike was watching my mom and dad at the top of the roller coaster, ready to go down. it was the first time ever that they rode a roller coaster together. I was probably around 10 or 11 so around 1971 I take that back... I also remember a ride called Magic Carpet Ride where you came down at the end on these roller things. Weird :)
In the 1960s my sister, brother, and I once rode the Cyclone Racer 8 times in a row without getting off ... just changed seats now and again ..... Cost $2.00 ....a quarter a ride ....
I can see that people had such fun but for me I only get tears as my mom died on the cyclone in 1978, I never got to spend much time with her to start, she died when I was 10 years old, her name was Sandra Magana, her maiden name was Sandra Motley, Not alot of people knew she had a son when she was very young, me I am Ken Motley. I love you mom, I wish I could find my grandfather James William Motley, my Uncle Rich Larmen and my dad, John Adrian, where the rest of the family??
thanks for your kindness. someone said the cyclone was replaced in 68 with s different roller coaster ride which they also called the cyclone. long beach museum and historical society is no help at all. im so sorry this park that gave so many such fun is gone. i was raised in the area and have shadow memories of it. all I wanted was to find out if there really was a memorial plaque regarding my moms death which i was told is why they finally shut it down in 78 and deconstructed it in 79.. if there was some memorial plaque in her memory at the park, it would have been nice to have it or a picture of it. it would be nice to have a more accurate account of how my mom died on it. closure would be nice. im told thr cars had no restraints of any kind. supposedly my mom death created a law requiring restraints on all rides across America. i have great memories of California long beach to Los Angelos but the park for me is a bit of a heart throb, it would help to know what exactly happened to her on it. i have only a tiny news paper clipping and the info on it, kind of confusing
Lived here all my life and this was the most fun when I was a kid growing up. My grandmother would take me and my brother every week during the summer to the pike. Take the tunnel under Ocean blvd. Go to the pike and then the beach. It's really too bad that big business came in and screwed the whole city up. They could have made the Pike another Disneyland. Could have made it better and bigger.
I also had fond memories as a kid, my grandfather Ray James (Rayford) used to help out around there before it got demolished. You most likely find me roller skating on the ramp like entry ways that lead into the pike near the whirlychair ride 2:43 minutes into this vid (lol not sure what it was called). Ah good times!
Hi my name was Rhonda Hathaway at the time my dad Edward Hathaway was managing the Pike, he was there from about 1953 - til it was torn down, so I was brought up there, my mom Mae and my Aunt Bea sold tickets there and my Aunt Bea also worked in the cotton candy and she also was a house keeper for Mr. Valair who owned most of the pike. I ran lose with my brothers Randy and Danny down there I knew everyone, and of course that was my first job selling tickets in kiddie land, it was one of the best lives a kid could have. It just about killed my dad when they tore it down, something inside of him died with it. He died in 1994. I feel so Blessed to have lived that life, my oldest boy Shawn who was born in 1970 was fortunate enough to get to experience some of it before it was gone, those were the HAPPY DAY'S !!!!
does anyone remember the 'hall of mirrors?' if you do, then you probably remember that man figure hanging from the wall out front... when the pike was finally dismantled in the '70's, it turned out that the man 'hanging' out front was a real person. he was murdered back in the '30's or '40's, mummified & hung in front of the house of mirrors in plain sight!
Is that the one where they had the fat lady and man laughing out front, and if you stood in front of the distorted mirrors, a gush of air would shoot up? I loved that ride, but I thought the body had been hanging on the inside, hanging from the dark ceiling. I always swore I'd sneak a flashlight in to see inside but always forgot I grew up going to the Pike and then took my kids there. I even remember the old swimming pool.
@DennisMorawski I have acknowledged that there is a claim that this video’s footage was provided by Dennis Morawski. I also encourage everyone that might enjoy it to go to his site and examine some of his other videos about Long Beach history.
Man I wish my name was God.I would turn back time and just leave it alone. However I am told by a scientist that it is possible, but he stoped answering my questions.Gee wonder why.
I went to the Pike in the mid 60’s to the mud 70’s. It was showing its age and was run down but still was fun. The roller coaster was my favorite. My father went on it when he was young. At 50 years old, this footage is a blessing! I, like so may others, practically grew up on the Pike! Thank God for such a Life I have lived! :)
I rolled the Roller coaster at pike in 1957 I was 7ys old.👍👍👍
Thanks for sharing !
Thanks so much for your video !!!
Thank you for the memoriesevery spot you showing this video I have been apart of a right been all through the Long Beach Pike as a young 8 to 14 year old so when I see that it brings back memories of the cyclone going into the ocean thank you again
I rode the Cyclone Racer a million times in the mid to late 60's when it was torn down after Labor Day in 1968.
Rode it 11 times in one evening with my brother, getting off and walking around between rides. Will never forget that. RIP bro!
I was there in my high-school years, and five years after. You bring back a lot of memories, so thanks for posting this video.

I remember riding. The cyclone 9 times for 3.15 back in 1965

We visited the Pike many times throughout the 60's. Lot's of fun. Especially the creaky roller coaster.

I loved this place! Rode the roller coaster over and over and over the last night before it was torn down....1968
To ride that twin rail Nu-Pike Coaster for the first time was sensory overload. I can still recall my first ride on it back in the day. Thanks for posting!

Nice video and fun to watch. Take care now.
That is one gorgeous rollercoaster!
5* and favorited, thanks so much for sharing. Just seeing some footage of the old Cyclone Racer made my day.
awesome looking park
It was so much fun at the pike we always went as a family night. I wish they would bring the pike back.darlene

Its crazy to see how much its changed
The Pike was used for many movies . Beach Party , Gorilla At Large , Roustabout , and many others .
I noticed some footage from Ray Dennis Steckler's Mixed Up Zombie movie thrown in at several parts! He must have been a hardcore fan of Nu-Pike! :)
Been there about 40 times , rode my bike with friends in early 70’s
Thank you Jerrymiles, for the great memory.
I was ther on those rides, in those days !
Went there many times...and went on all those rides...
This is awesome! Thanks for posting!

Oh yes those were the days I've been here since 1970and I really enjoyed those days at the pike love it
The double Ferris Wheel was truly terrifying to this 5 year old.
Downtown L.B. has gone downhill since the Cyclone Racer was torn down. I used to ride the Cyclone as a teen in the late 60's.
Correction. I looked it up and it turns out that there is a story behind the mummy. They say it was an out law named Mccurddy who robbed a train back in 1911. Hot summer nights in the mid 60s. Remember it all so well.
this is one of my favorite videos by Jerry Miles

I hear ya James! We lived in an apt on 4th & cherry, oh the good times!!!!!!!!!! :)
I wish we had this instead of the assorted shops we have now. All that's worth there is a movie theater and an arcade.
I thought that coaster was taken out in the late 1960s?
+427mike427 it closed 1979.
+ken motley I'm so sorry Ken.......Have a Happier New Year.
ken motley So sorry to hear that.
thanks for your kindness. someone said the cyclone was replaced in 68 with s different roller coaster ride which they also called the cyclone. long beach museum and historical society is no help at all. im so sorry this park that gave so many such fun is gone. i was raised in the area and have shadow memories of it. all I wanted was to find out if there really was a memorial plaque regarding my moms death which i was told is why they finally shut it down in 78 and deconstructed it in 79.. if there was some memorial plaque in her memory at the park, it would have been nice to have it or a picture of it. it would be nice to have a more accurate account of how my mom died on it. closure would be nice. im told thr cars had no restraints of any kind. supposedly my mom death created a law requiring restraints on all rides across America. i have great memories of California long beach to Los Angelos but the park for me is a bit of a heart throb, it would help to know what exactly happened to her on it. i have only a tiny news paper clipping and the info on it, kind of confusing
@68Wildhorse Yes! Can't believe you know his name. Was in front of Laff in the Dark which they show for a second right at 2:42.

Footage from the Z grade horror classic The Incredibly Strange Creatures That Stopped Living And Became Mixed Up Zombies. I kid you not.
yep
I also had fond memories as a kid, my grandfather Ray James (Rayford) used to help out around there before it got demolished. You most likely find me roller skating on the ramp like entry ways that lead into the pike near the whirlychair ride 2:43 minutes into this vid (lol not sure what it was called). Ah good times!

***** I was there in 1966 till around 1969 running wild too. My mom always played clock a line.
Does your dad knows any movies filmed at The Pike ?
Save a couple of carousels, almost none of the park remains todzy; I managed to visit a couple of times as a kid in the late 1970's.
I rode the wild mouse 73

It was Elmer McCurdy who was killed during a botched train robbery in 1911.

I have acknowledged that there is a claim that this video’s footage was provided by Dennis Morawski. I also encourage everyone that might enjoy it to go to his site and examine some of his other videos about Long Beach history.
