I grew up in Gardena, right next door. This is very interesting to me. I remember driving down Rosecrans through Hawthorne to go shopping or to get to the beach.
Moved to Hawthorne from Long Beach in 62. HHS class of 71 Stayed til 85 and my Mom stayed until the mall was abandoned. Many experiences relating old and new while living there but the group of words I never would have imagined hearing together... "Mission Control Hawthorne."
A friend of mine always talks about his buddies on the football team at Hawthorne High. Two of them were Al Jardine and Brian Wilson. What’s funny is that coach Chauncey had little Al playing fullback. They got a lot of laughs at their reunions.
Nice video. I grew up in Westchester right at the Inglewood city line two blocks from the Centinela Adobe. Born in Daniel Freeman Hospital. I took karate lessons as a teen in Hawthorne at The Karate Connection on Hawthorne and 135th for a few years around 1980.
Damn, I remember the wild times we had cruising Hawthorne Blvd in 1965 back in my wayward youth. We’d cruise the A&W, then to Fosters freeze looking for girls, then over to Inglewood to cruise the Wich Stand then back to the A&W. We’d cruise all night long, back when two bucks filled up your gas tank, we’d drag race off the line when the light turned green, flirt with girls in the other cars, under age beer drinking, and blasting The Beach Boys music out of our custom car speakers. We’d park in the center divider of the Blvd to bullshit & try to duck the cops who were trying to enforce the curfew. I moved out of state a couple of years later & after 50 years of being away I went back for a visit & cruise Hawthorne Blvd one more time, but of course after all that time there was absolutely nothing I recognized. They tore down the A&W, it’s an auto parts store now, & the Wich Stand is now a health food store/restaurant. But I still have my memories of the past.
I remember Ray Sulsur, Don Hunt and Don Vigil who built most of Hawthorne during the 50S and 60s. Bill Seers who started Seers Lumber. Oh the good old days.
I love the history of California. You did an awesome job. What shows the greed of the California government is: 1) Artesian Wells everywhere in California so why the water shortages? 2) Oil everywhere in Los Angeles (La Brea Tar Pits) why the gas shortages. 3.) The greatest agricultural land but why the rising price of groceries? 4.) If California could do some real soul searching and clean out the corruption. It could once again be the paradise it was meant to be.
LaBrea is a historical sight. They are still finding historical artifacts. No oil Wells allowed. I understand what you're saying, probably will never be allowed for oil production there.
Amazing work! Appreciate the time it took to research and put this together. I could watch an hour long video on Hawthorne's history told by you. I am fascinated by your statement "beginning of the end" regarding the mall. I'm curious what will become of that area with everything changing so fast. Definitely not a fan of that big hotel they popped down behind the Chase. I remember cutting through the library lot to the corner light toward Albertsons. Anyway, keep up the great work - I need more of this.

I think the Manson family Rob Hawthorne hardware in 1970. That had to be some history.
This was awesome. Thanks for making it.

Just photographs . No film footage . Do you have moving pictures of old town Hawthorne. ? Also: This was edited by a robot (A.I.)

Does anyone remember the nice little department store on Hawthorne Blvd in the 70’s? They sold finer things and felt fancy to us young kids.

The initial Founders would be turning in their graves, if they saw what Hawthorne and Inglewood had become
Thanks. Leuzinger 1978.
Marilyn Monroe grew up in Hawthorne.
WHO? What? WHERE?
Never heard of it.
