Harm & False Memory

  • I used to think that the only escape from OCD's torment was to avoid anything that could possibly trigger it. So, slowly but surely, I began to pull back from doing the things I loved. It seemed like an easy trade at first. If I just skip this one party, then I won't have to spend the entire next day replaying every memory from it...If I never meet anyone new, then there will be no interactions to second-guess whether or not I caused harm...If I never make memories, there will be no memories to check, replay, and wonder if they're even real...
    Slippery slope.
I continued bargaining away pieces of my life, a little at a time, in the hope that it would bring me peace. But the peace OCD promised never came. All it ever did was shrink my life and allow OCD's hold over me to grow.
True recovery from OCD's vicious cycle didn't come until I found specialized OCD treatment, called ERP (exposure response prevention) therapy with NOCD. It's been three years since I worked with NOCD, and I can tell you that it is absolutely worth it. Download the app to get started.
