Overcrowding African Cichlids | Is this Good or BAD?

  • I have received so many comments from my viewers mentioning that my tank is overcrowded.
    Here I just finished a water change. Fish are happily swimming around. They don’t seem to have a worry in the world. I realise there may be some issues I may also not be aware of.
    I am currently contemplating adding another Tiger Oscar of the same size as my Red Chilli.
    Please talk to me in the comments and tell me what you think about this ‘overstocking’.

      I LOVE that you have a mix of S. American with the African cichlids! I’ve done this with my African Cichlids also and I have to say the S. Americans helped curb the African’s aggression way better than just having the Africans all by themselves. 😉
      Your tank is beautiful!!! Thank you for sharing it.
      My Blood Parrot turned out the best the perfect referee for my fish. She has since passed on and I’m thinking of adding my 2 y/o Gold Severum in there instead. I’m just not sure how tame or scared she’ll be once I put her in there though. Any thoughts?

      Thank you kindly. Yes I agree, the Africans have such strong temperaments and they do need other type of fish to ‘tame’ them a little😂. Makes the tank a little more interesting imo. What I would suggest is introducing it but separate it so the other fish get used to it for a number of days or weeks. Then release it and monitor. If it gets battered separate it again to heal and release. I have some videos I did when I recently introduced my juvenile Oscars and this worked really well. Now they’re part of the family and defending themselves very well and not being attacked as much as when I first introduced them. Some links to the relevant videos:

      @@CichlidLove I just watched the last video you recommended. It was really funny to watch the peacocks casually hover over the Oscar as he and your hap were fighting. I see what you mean by keeping them penned until everyone settles and I do have floating pond plant baskets I’ve used in the past for exactly that purpose. However, my Severum is unfortunately way too big to fit in one of them. LOL
      Maybe…. I could cut out some of the light diffuser and create a wall within the 75 gallon? That way I can partition everyone on either side and I’ll still get good water movement too. Hmm... 🤔
      I’ll let you know how this goes when I get a chance to try this out.
      Thanks for the videos too. I love your tanks!!

    Overstocking is GREAT to me! As long as you have the filtration to support them I don't see a problem!

    In your opinion what would be the best size tank for a Frontosa tank of say 4 or 5 small ones to watch them grow
    I have access to a 330 lt corner tank curved front.

    • @CichlidLove
      @CichlidLove  3 месяца назад

      Thank you. This tank is 380litres. I have two big canister filters on each side. African cichlids like Frontosa are better kept in larger groups as it helps with the aggressive behaviour. The fewer they are the easier it is for them to target each other and kill.

    • @CichlidLove
      @CichlidLove  3 месяца назад +1

      You seem to have a great filtration system going on there, which in my opinion is important if you have a whole lot of fish. Also keeping up with water changes. This tank is about 380litre with two canister filters, 2700l/h and 2400l/h on either side.

  • @martingranzow6624
    @martingranzow6624 3 месяца назад

    My cichlid tank looks about the same with American Cichlids mixed in with Africans. The upside with this many fish is reduced aggression. The huge downside is the frequency of water changes.

    it's either good or bad depending on how you look at it. The fish all look healthy and are not beaten up by each other so from that aspect all good. if it is astatically pleasing to have that many fish together and also from different continents is a different question. If your goal was to recreate a natural environment/biotoop it is not done well. but it seems like your goal was to have lots of beautiful fish together in a glass box, you most definitely succeeded! if the Oscars continue to work out in that tank with these tank mates? Time will tell . It's won't hurt to have a plan made up for when things are not working out anymore. The most important opinion is your own opinion as it is your tank.
    good luck and don't let other peoples opinion affect you.
