I built a 4 gallon vapor chamber on top of my 20 gallon set up to give the vapors a chance to mix be for going to into the column and to stop puking so I can fill right to the top. Great video Jesse keep them coming and thanks.
You just made me realize that when I stopped my distilling at 40 percent that I could have continued until 20 then just add that to my next batch. First two runs here. About 6 pints 50 and 4 40's. Thanks!
Just moving up from an Air Still to a T500 (I know...definitely a noobie!) and I thoroughly enjoy and appreciate your videos. Your laugh is the best and so is your knowledge! Thank you 😊
Another solution if you are worried about not covering elements is throwing some balast in the boiler. Glass marbles, Stainless ball bearings, ceramic beads or have even heard of using stones. Never had to worry myself but usually add a handfull of copper scraps as boil breakers to mine.
There are few other factors here. Less volume will create some reflux at the top of the pot depending on vapour path diameter. More volume will create less reflux as the vapour will travel up the vapour path and not so much at the top of the boiler. I think the entry abv makes a difference also. Take a look at major distilleries they all have different abv entry and volume into their spirit still. It creates different characteristics For example - For 1 grain bill I fill to 75% volume @ 25% abv Another I fill to 50% volume and 20% abv Both completely different character spirits.
little tip for one that doing spirit run with low wines. I fill my boiler with water just above the elements then throw my low wines in.. that way I'm shall that I'll wont burn them out.
As full as possible with out puking lol. I put 10 gallons in my 13 gallon pot. I could go more but that's how much wash my frementrs hold. When I used double thumpers that was very forgiving I had a small still and I'd get greedy and it would puke a little sometimes but it didn't hurt anything since the first thumper caught the puke. This is a great topic its nice to give the new people piece of mind, as well as helping them not make some of the silly mistakes alot of us habe done done.
Love it, brother! Great content. We've been growing in the craft together, it's always new and exciting. Always that I wonder if it would work, or have great carry over taste. Great helping folks that are where we once we're, wet behind the ears and having little idea of what we were doing. So fun seeing others progress in our beloved hobby and share in their successes and hoping we can eliminate some of the failures we found along the way. Growing pains, I guess they are. Cheers, Mate!! Matt
Not so much an issue when using a reflux still, but with a pot still, the amount of empty headspace can affect the distillate flavours and aromas. More headspace means more passive reflux can happen. Wash/low-wine composition obviously plays the biggest role, but the rate of energy input along side the shape/design and available headspace of the still come second. Something to think about as you get more experienced in making spirits!
Thanks Jesse! Really appreciate the insight. I'm looking into my first still at this point and trying to figure out volumes so this is very informative! I also appreciate that you're working in Metric... time those US folks bit the bullet and joined the rest of the planet and used 'sane' measurements ;-) LOL.
I literally just watched this video yesterday and today my boiler tripped out on an E3 code.(boiler dry) wasn't dry I had only just filled it but my rye mash was so thick it had burnt to the bottom causing sensor to think it had boiled dry.
Yes love this video and I am new to the craft. But try to Learn from you but some I have learned the hard way. Lol but love your videos. Keep up the good work.
Another 💪🏻👍🏻! I appreciate your vids no matter how basic. I still have much to learn if/when/as I expand this new found hobby. For now my sugar wash begins as the perfect C02 Generator for my gardens and later the likkur finishes as its reclaimed making Rick Simpson Oil! 🤩🤩🤩 Plenty of blue flame leftover even though I dump anything under 100 proof. Looking forward to more of your vids! 🤜🏻💥🤛🏻
That’s exactly how I would do it too! I like getting nerdy and doing the math to find out my various volumes and outputs! On another note (nothing to do with you Jesse), why the hell is RUclips inundating me with 20 minute and 50 minute ads lately? Holy moley
Also forgot to mention to do 1.5 runs if you know that at the end of both strips wont have enough to fill boiler past critical point. Or instead of backfilling with water could use backset as it may help with flavor loss while also help fill still.
Jesse more "new guys" hints "After distillation"... Newly distilled spirits: Cover containers with coffee filters, cotton, hemp, stainless mesh, let the funk out, keeps bugs out. Storing and aging (Style) with wood: Whiskey, Bourbon, Rye, Rum, Scotch. Aging vessels: What's safe? What's not? Container sizing and container composition. Poor man's PTFE Lid/Cap: white oak (or wood), wax paper, copper, stainless, natural cork. Proofing: After aging 6+ months - 1st filtering, water tempering/proofing... Decanting: After proofing, open air breathing (partial) with coffee filters of aged spirits. Fire Control: Where to safely age products and in what volumes? A lotta room for conjecture here. Forced Aging: Nuclear, sonic... (Could be another video altogether with ALL the different topics... I know you did one ;) .) Cheers Jesse!
I would love to see an A B comparison of the same mash loaded into the still at different ABV. For example: A is loaded at fermented ABV while B is loaded in at 50/50 mash/water.
Always good to see your videos Jesse, really enjoy watching them. Has anyone else noticed way more ads though? 6 ads in a 10 min video seems a bit excessive...
Would have been great to watch this video last Friday... I tried running 45 litres of 60% in my Keg on Sunday. The massive thumping and expanding metal noises luckliy made me abort and read up the max ABV 😅
Yep that's all. Before I first tried paste I was sure it wouldn't work. Didn't seem logical that flour and water on the outside would stop steam vapours and seal up. I was wrong of course and uncle Popcorn Sutton was right. Haha.
When you say you collect down to 20%, is that when the output TOTAL is 20% ABV, or just the latest sample that comes out? i.e. when you start pulling 20% ABV out of the still, then you stop?
@@jacobdeslattes3519 Thanks, so when people say they stop at 20% ABV, are they saying when the whole thing is 20% or when the output coming out is 20% (e.g. ~40%) ?
The only thing i had to look up was the hillbilly calculator for how much sugar goes into a 5 gallon batch to make it have a higher abv everything else was just trial and error at first i made some nasty freaking stuff that was only good to dump out but i kept going and as long as i keep my wash under 200 i get pretty good stuff everyone likes my shine now hahahaha and i was sooooooo happy when i finally made my first full jar of liquor that was 130 proof it was my tea shine that tasted like ice tea mixed with liquor and now im making jugs Hahahahahahahaha HAPPY DISTILLING EVERYONE keep the tradition alive
I dont think its Still It that put in the ads. I got no adverts at all. The ads are part of having free RUclips. For $10 a month I reckon its great value not to have them.

Had the same revelation this morning and came here to drop the idea, but you beat me to it!
Thank you doing my first run ever and boy do I have questions thank you for answers greatly appreciated

I really love these videos. They are really appreciated, I'm just getting started with serious distilling

very late to this, with exposed elements can glass (or S/S) blocks be placed next to the elements to reduce the liquid volume required to cover them?

But would love to learn more and see more about mash and all that. And have you ever tryed patotos for a vodka run.

Awesome channel Jesse. Have a run question if you have a moment.
Luckily I use 8,5, and 3 gallon pot stills so I don't really run into this issue. The information is definitely appreciated though.

What do you think is the minimum amount you can put in a T500? Heating element is electric and at the bottom.
I have not used one personally. But perhaps 5L. Get some info from someone with more experience than me though.
Boom! Thanks jessie..
good info man!
Thank you. Might be stupid question but how do you make paste. Just flower and water correct?
Yes
Yep that's all. Before I first tried paste I was sure it wouldn't work. Didn't seem logical that flour and water on the outside would stop steam vapours and seal up. I was wrong of course and uncle Popcorn Sutton was right. Haha.
Direct fire. Leave 20% boiler space for thermal expansion. Use a antifoam compound for pukes. Video over 😂
When you say you collect down to 20%, is that when the output TOTAL is 20% ABV, or just the latest sample that comes out? i.e. when you start pulling 20% ABV out of the still, then you stop?
When the output coming out is 20% usually all of it together is around 40%
@@jacobdeslattes3519 Thanks, so when people say they stop at 20% ABV, are they saying when the whole thing is 20% or when the output coming out is 20% (e.g. ~40%) ?
Mathew Mirabito output
I almost always find that by the time my parrot is telling me 40% the run is finished. Those flavours that come next are not what I want in my liquor.
@@kevinbarrett3 What about for just a stripping run?
Does anyone have experience with a 200L boiler, tempted to get one, what size of column should I use ( neutral spirit)
I would use at least a four inch column
So it sounds you keep it K.I.S.S. I wonder how many get that lol.
Keep it keep it?
😂 Dude just keep it simple stupid! 😬🥃
Did tou say "inch"?
