Before Rod even begins to sing this Irish love 🍀🌹song , I knew it's was going to be a sad tale between two Irish sweethearts🍀. Being of Irish descent🍀🌹🍀 as he sings the song.,, I anticipated the ending to be what it was, A very moving and touching ending🍀. I grew up with all my Irish relatives who came over during the potato famine and knew from living among them🍀🌹. What proud people they were,,, And how much they loved being Irish 🍀🍀🌹 They called themselves the Fighting Irish and they were proud of,🍀🌹 the type of people that they were and what they traditions stood for and they would fight to uphold the Liberty which they truly deserved🍀🌹Therefore being aware of The character of the Irish people🍀 as Rod sings the song. I'm not surprised with the details of this beautiful story of bravery and love❤
An Irish woman looks at her beloved man,, As a man who will be able to defend and protect his family and his people,, Even if it meant being killed 🍀🌹🍀. So when Grace and her husband were allowed the 15 minutes to get married, both of them knew it was the right thing to do. 🍀🌹 I have four brothers. I come from a Big Irish family ❤. My mother was the first with her family to come to America. So I knew ,, How much value and worth My parents Irish heritage meant🙏🍀🌹 Not only to them but all of their family,,, As in a song they too would fight and die for their country 🍀🌹🍀, More importantly, how proud they were of their country and all that Island stood for,,, Even if it meant dying for their freedom was an honorable act 🌹🍀🌹 That was the mindset of a true Irishman who loved his land aka his country. Grace knew what she was getting into, As I grew up with people of that mentality. Its just a beautiful, heartfelt and true story of love,, And bravery 🍀❤. Not only for a loved one but also for the love of your country AKA Ireland 🌹🍀🌹

Good man Rod. My grandfather was fought in the War of Independence around Templemore. Always have a lump in my throat with this song. It actually Pádraig which is Irish for Patrick. Pádraig Pierce was another leader and was shot as well. The bravery of these men was unquestionable. They knew what their faith was but went ahead with it to sway the public to fight to get the British out and unfortunately a lot of British don't know the Irish history and what done here in Ireland. That song is very true and tragic.

Rod, thanks for singing a beautiful ballad. Rod Grace died in 1955 age 67, the poor lady was dead a week before she was found. They were 28yrs old, he was already a dying man with tuberculosis, got out of his hospital bed to join the rebels. Had to be supported to stand when getting married. All very sad.

In fact in the last verse of the song '"I love so much that I can see His blood upon the rose" is from the title of one if his poems "i see His blood upon the Rose"

Your Grandfather will never be forgotten and I been to his graveside many, many times at Arbour Hill to pray for him and his comrades. (I find it so peaceful there). Regarding the singing, my only issue is the fact that Sir Rod is also a "Commander of the British Empire" of course, a medal which bears the image of King George V (who was King at the time of the Rising) and also bears the words "For God and the Empire" an Empire which your Grandfather, The IRB and many others in the past, gave their lives fighting against of course. God bless all the Brave Men and Women of the Easter Rising, they will never be forgotten.

The intro is loosely accurate but some of the facts are off. Grace and Joseph were both 28 at the time (not early 20s and Rod has them at 21 and 22 in an earlier performance) They were not “childhood sweethearts” but met when in 1913 when both were active republicans. He was a friend of her brother in law William MacDonagh who was also involved in the Easter Rising and was executed the previous day to Joseph. Grace died in 1955 not 1969. Pedantic points I realise but why spoil a beautiful true story with inaccuracies. Great song. Glad you extended it’s audience Rod.

    Lyrics:
As we gather in the chapel here in old Kilmainham Jail
I think about these past few weeks, oh will they say we've failed?
From our school days, they have told us we must yearn for liberty
Yet all I want in this dark place is to have you here with me
Oh Grace just hold me in your arms and let this moment linger
They'll take me out at dawn and I will die
With all my love I place this wedding ring upon your finger
There won't be time to share our love for we must say goodbye
Now I know it's hard for you my love to ever understand
The love I bare for these brave men, the love for my dear land
But when Pádraic called me to his side down in the GPO
I had to leave my own sick bed, to him I had to go
Oh, Grace just hold me in your arms and let this moment linger
They'll take me out at dawn and I will die
With all my love I'll place this wedding ring upon your finger
There won't be time to share our love for we must say goodbye
Now as the dawn is breaking, my heart is breaking too
On this May morn, as I walk out, my thoughts will be of you
And I'll write some words upon the wall so everyone will know
I loved so much that I could see his blood upon the rose
Oh, Grace just hold me in your arms and let this moment linger
They'll take me out at dawn and I will die
With all my love I'll place this wedding ring upon your finger
There won't be time to share our love for we must say goodbye
    For we must say goodbye

Its a shame Rod did not continue and tell you the whole story of Grace and the 1916 rebels, for example, it was the Irish Free State that threw Grace herself into prison along with 1000's of Irish republicans, just a few years after the Rising, the same Irish Free State that executed many times more Irish Republicans than the British did in 1916, many of whom of course fought with Joe in the Easter Rising. What selective memories some people have! But a lovely song.

You don't get it do you? The aim was always to become rich and famous, fast cars, mansions, sleep with beautiful women etc. etc. In order to achieve this he had to produce the greatest music in the history of western civilisation. If you find his touring schedule so objectionable that it outweighs the music - don't listen!!

Catherine, I'm not completely wrong as it's my opinion. See some of the comments above mine I'm being tame.I'm not having a go at him. I've actually had a pint with him many years ago and he's a nice enough guy.And singing the song at Parkhead isn't a gauge. Many Celtic fans and those who have run the club have a history of unionism but will still happily sing songs about Irish freedom. After all he is SIR Rod.
