Andy adored Shawn. They actually became good friends after that 1993 NAMM weekend. To this day, Andy lights up anytime someone brings up Shawn Lane. You just can’t fake that kind of love and admiration. He and Reb both knew that they were witnessing something special that night.

Reb Beach’s face when Shawn Lane starts playing…. Priceless!!! He was such a terrifying monster of a musician and player and such a kind and humble gentle human being. He is sorely missed. But he lives on through his music and always will.

Shawn Lane… The only man alive at the time who was SO good that a stage full of the very best players around were actually willing to collectively subjugate their egos (which it’s no crime for a young guy to have in that business) and just be music fans again.
I bet that 40-ish seconds bent their brains just like the first time they heard Edward in 1978. Except when they all figured out what Ed was doing on Eruption, they all managed to incorporate it into their own playing.
NO ONE on that stage and very few since can honestly say they could do what Shawn did. And the fact that he did it with less than zero ego of his own says a lot. Really miss him.

I know music isn't a competition but it's Shawn Lane and then everyone else. His solo here is magnificent and beautifully structured. Shawn had and could do everything and anything as a guitarist and musician. He was a genius, not just musically but also intellectually. Shawn was a DEEP thinker. I hate that he's no longer with us. Just a beautiful human being gone way too soon.

It's because as GG said, Shawn was more than just a guy who practiced a lot. He was very smart, had a fast learning ability (he knew a lot of stuff about a lot of things), plus he had an illness that allowed him insane speeds in his figners.

Shawn Lane is so much higher than the others... it almost becomes a lesson for others....
The camera work is beyond terrible but the constant focus on Shawn makes me believe that the guy holding the camera knew what was going to happen when Skolnick finished..... Watching Reb almost drool at the speed and skill of Shawn cracks me up every time XD I miss you Shawn. You were one of a kind.
Back in those days, so many venues could be very strict about bringing cameras-and likely, NAMM was that way for so many years. So he was probably performing a balancing act hiding it from security while also trying to attain the best possible angles.
What a linchpin moment in time for all on stage and at that venue! Shawn was an angel sent from heaven, gave the world virtuoso perfection, and went back to heaven.

I agree I noticed that right away and it seems he only does a Hendrix teeth gimmick, I am sure he is not very good left handed as his teeth solo was quite awful with sharp and flat bends, he knew Shawn well and probably figured I will never up this guy with licks so let's try a trick is my guess.
