  • In this episode I build a modern / contemporary gas fire pit out of concrete. The fire pit converts into an outdoor table when not in use using a wooden topper.

    Outstanding! The wife and i are looking for something affordable like this. We don’t want to spend $2-4K for something that’s nothing more than concrete, decorative rock, and propane. I bet you could make a killing if you sold just the molds for the DIY’rs out there. I’m going to give the lighter GFRC material a try. LOL, that's a man who is not afraid of hard work. Great job! Does seem strange that someone as capable and experienced as you would remotely think that pouring flowable concrete on their workbench in the middle of their garage was a good idea. Im guessing it was freezing outside and the form became too heavy to move, lol. The epoxy seems strange as well.

    • @ShalohaCreations
      @ShalohaCreations  2 года назад

      Hahaha .. Well at the time it seemed like a good idea, my bench was the most level spot at the time and I had my tractor to move it… after the clean up, I found a much closer spot to pour it ;) As for the epoxy… that too was not in the original plans, there was way more air pockets than I anticipated on the front edge and top. I originally just wanted to polish it out to have the aggregate show through. As they say.. “ when life gives you lemons……” 😜

    Nice work. A few things you might want to consider if you do end up making these for customers. Most code requires venting on two opposite sides, totalling 36 square inches, no opening less than 18 inches square. It doesn't appear you have achieved that. For your own installation you could probably just raise it up so there is a gap at the bottom. That's how most commercial fire bowls achieve the required venting. I'd upgrade to a name brand burner that's CSA/UL certified (HPC, Warming Trends, etc). Lastly most epoxy has relatively low melting temperature, that you can easily achieve with a good burner, so I'd find some other way to finish the top.

    I really enjoy your videos. You are quite the renaissance man with design, welding, woodworking and masonry. Quick question - how much do you like your track saw? I am thinking about he cordless Makita version and it looks like there are a lot of applications for it.

    • @ShalohaCreations
      @ShalohaCreations  2 года назад

      Thanks PNW .. I got a killer deal on a used one, so I’m happy with it, but having said that, I’ve used a festool one before and I feel it’s precision was superior. My biggest complaint with the Makita are the tracks. The aluminum tracks are not always flat, they often come slightly cupped brand new from the manufacturer. I’ve returned a few of them because it can cause the slightest bit of rocking when cutting which can cause an imperfect cut, especially on miter cuts. Festool also makes a bigger one with a deeper cut which would be beneficial for thicker live edge pieces as well. Though I have heard they are underpowered for their size. If I ever need a new one I will probably save for the festool. I wish there was a cheaper option with the same precision.

    • @pnwdiy2073
      @pnwdiy2073 2 года назад +1

      @@ShalohaCreations OK, good to know. I have been consolidating my cordless tools to the Makita brand and was thinking I wanted the panel saw in the cordless version. First off...you are a hell of a craftsman. I wish I had half your tools and a workshop like that! However I had one concern when watching....you used rock instead of fireglass or lava rock. I would be concerned those little rocks may explode and hurt someone (eye or burn injury). Unless those are for fire pits, which it looked like normal gravel, I would use the proper (safer) fill. Fire glass also looks alot nicer too :). Again great work!

    • @ShalohaCreations
      @ShalohaCreations  3 года назад

      Thanks for you concern👍 I am quite aware of the possibility of materials exploding under heat. This is why first I used a gas insert, it prevents the heat transfer to concrete and second, why I used fire safe stone. If you need more info feel free to email me at Shalohacreations@gmail and I can possibly send you a diagram with dimensions. I would also recommend building in place and not upside down like I did. Hi K Brown, Thank you for watching my video. The fire pit dimensions for the Top measure 41.5” across top. Top thickness is 5.5” thick minus the 1” lip for wood cover to sit on. The base is I think 16 or 17” wide. I also tapered the concrete from the 5.5 inch’s at top to 3” at bottom to use less concrete. You could probably get away with 2” thick at bottom if you want to shave some weight off. Also I used quickcrete countertop mix for the concrete because it has the fiberglass reinforcement and polymers for strength and good flow... hope this helps, and if there is anything you need help with or clarification with along the way please let me know and I will see if I can help. • @ShalohaCreations
      @ShalohaCreations  4 года назад +1

      Christopher de Leon congratulations on the new house! I too live in California, here in San Louis Obispo County. If you are handy and can do most of the work yourself, you will save a ton of money. Your costs will very a little, but you can figure around $110 a yard for concrete. Plus you will have to have a guy pump it... another $3-400. Not sure how many feet you need to go, but if it’s significant amount you will want to higher an excavator to dig the footings . You can figure around $60+ per hour on that. For forms I just used 2x12s and you can figure somewhere around $6-8 a foot for forms if you are buying them new, I believe this price would include the rebar and wall ties as well. I built the forms for my house, ordered the concrete, and then hired some guys to pour and finish it. To give you an idea of cost, I did somewhere around 280 feet of wall with a maximum hight of 3’ in some sections. The wall cost me if I remember right somewhere around $8-9K. This was doing it myself. To hire out I was getting quotes in the 20-25k range😬

      @christopherdeleon2997 4 года назад

      Shaloha Creations man... thanks for that info! It’s all valuable, trust me.
      Unfortunately, I can’t call myself handy. Yes, I’ve painted walls, installed ligjt fixtures and hung curtains. I feel that doesn’t qualify me to do heavy backyard landscape work. Is this something you recommend a rookie to try?

    • @ShalohaCreations
      @ShalohaCreations  4 года назад +1

      Christopher de Leon There are definitely a few things to be aware of when building forms. If you haven’t had much building experience I would probably hire out if you can afford it. But if you want to join the big leagues... I’m sure there are plenty of form building videos on RUclips 😁 If you do decide to do it yourself make sure to use wall ties, I’ve seen to many people try to build large forms without them and that is a recipe for disaster.
