It’s really a lesson learned for all NFL teams, that you shouldn’t necessarily just give up on a quarterback after one rough season, especially if that player has already shown he can play well enough to win like Baker did in 2020. I know it was a different era but imagine if the Colts gave up on Peyton Manning after his 28 interceptions in his rookie year, so they offered a king’s ransom to trade up in the 1999 draft to select someone like Tim Couch or Akili Smith, two guys who were highly touted coming out of college. That’s completely hypothetical but if that had happened, it would have set the Colts franchise back another five or ten years.

I would say that a player like Mahomes or Lamar Jackson can command that kind of money because they put their franchises into championship position (well, Jackson still needs to overcome obstacles). What makes money for the league? Asses in chairs, eyes glued to TVs, wearing those expensive jerseys. KC and Baltimore are turning a profit and without their star QBs, interest just wouldn't be the same.
So yeah, they're worth it. It just happens to be number so high that it does boggle the mind.

Imagine being Baker Mayfield. You finally led Cleveland to the playoffs but after this you are trying your best but come up short either due to your shoulder injuries and having glue sniffers as coaches. The media, the fans, and even the owners blame you for why the Browns are failing despite more evidence saying it's a combination of many things including your declining numbers. So they cut you for a guy who has sexual assault allegations from over 20 women and they give him $230 million before he even plays a snap. Fully guaranteed $230 million. Meanwhile, people are writing you off as a major bust and a has-been.
I guess Baker got the last laugh because he is currently playing as a starter for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers while Deshaun has yet to play a full season.

Tons of legal problems, way overpaid, gave up key draft picks which save money, the guy was going to miss games right away, plus the guy you had (Baker) was winning you games. This was beyond dumb. Everyone associated with this should be fired and should never be allowed near a football team again. Sadly, Jimmy Haslam was probably the brains behind this. Watson's predatory behavior is main reason why that contract was one of the most horrible things I've seen a franchise in any sport do. It just tells women "too bad, he might be the touchdown king so your trauma doesn't matter". The fact he's been the worst QB in the league feels more like karma and I hope hearing people cheer his injury hurt him hard. He hurt a lot more people with his behavior. Abusive men need harsh punishment, not given nearly a quarter of a billion dollars.
Had Jackson scored that kind of contract, it would have helped other players. He's still making bank, but he's also playing at an elite level that rewards the investment. And insofar as I know, he's a decent human being off the field.

They'll NEVER be another fully guaranteed contract in the history of the NFL. Furthermore, it cements how dumb the Browns are by opening the door to this in the first place.

Watson not gonna get that last year. He will get cut after the injury and Cleveland just gonna eat the rest of Watson's guarantee unless NFL eats it or voids it.

NFL hasn’t or will ever give money to a team because it didn’t work out. Browns on the hook for whatever the contract says.

@SaltyChip it has never been this high and don't act like NFL hadn't aided teams. We'll see.

@ it’s the salary cap and the nfl has NEVER given relief to a team. Browns made their bed and got to live with it. Only thing that can recoup any money is if they took out an insurance policy on Watson which I’ve heard they did and could get up to $13 million back this year for missing time because of on field injury.

@ and also the money has gotten this high because of the tv deals are much larger and the players and owners signed papers on how to split the money. The team has so much they can spend and that’s on them to pay it. NFL is run by the owners and goodell and other owners would never help the browns after breaking rank and giving a player a fully guaranteed contract. They pretty much blackballed the browns and they won’t do any deals that helps them. They don’t want their own players now asking for fully guaranteed money. A lot of behind the scenes stuff the went on for that contract and nobody in the league is feeling bad for the browns!

@SaltyChip NFL going way hard to investigate him to see if they can void it. Yes yeah. NFL hasn't covered for a cheating team too, huh?

Wasn't long ago, teams all collectively blacklisted a QB for protesting injustices. But a disgusting creep like Watson got $230m fully guaranteed smfh.
