HIMYM's ending wasn't the problem IMO... it was that the show centered the last two season on Barney and Robin's relationship, to then speed run Ted's relationship with the Mother, and then have Robin and Barney divorce immediately. What was the point of the last two seasons?
The problem was they'd already filmed the scenes in the future with Teds children during the second season (to avoid the actors aging). They had no choice but to stick with the ending of Ted and Robin, despite the fact that as the show went on it became obvious Barney and Robin were a better pairing
The real problem is 2 pronged. 1)in the beginning the show runners had no clue how many seasons they would get, especially since the first season isn’t the best, & so they kept changing who the mother would be. At first it was Victoria, who I prefer over Robin, then when they kept surviving they settled on Robin. It wouldn’t surprise me if Stella was actually considered at some point until they realized the show hit its stride and they would get a couple more seasons. 2) they stopped being willing to change story lines in the latter seasons as much as they had early on and when they did change things it was extremely hypocritical. Prime example is Ted moving on from Robin by dissolving the 40 when single marriage pact. Only for them to constantly show he might still have feelings for her at the end of season 8 & begging of season 9. Most notably with the Locket storyline. Worst yet is that shot the alternate ending where Tracey is alive & Barney & Robin stay married. Them ultimately cow tailing to the Robin ending because of shooting scenes with his kids was the biggest cop out.

I agree the finale went by way too fast and ruined two full seasons of setup (Barney & Robin getting married). I really think they thought they had at least one more season and then was told no more seasons so they had to cram a finale into a season that wasn’t meant to be the final season. I guess I’m glad we got an ending even though it wasn’t the best possible one considering the final two seasons of setup.
One of the worst twist endings to a show is pretty little liars. Not saying it's an amazing show by any means, but i watched it with my wife and got genuinely interested in the plot and mystery of it all, only for the final episode to reveal it was all an evil twin of one of the main girls that was literally introduced in the last episode (yes really)
I will always be grateful to not be with the herd on this one. Found the end satisfying and it left me happy with the ride. Could have been different, sure. But I wasn't upset with what we got.
Killing off Logan doomed any chance for Veronica Mars to continue -you don't kill off a fan favorite character for virtually no reason and expect those fans to still be with you. Terrible Terrible choice by creator Rob Thomas
Season one of Veronica Mars was almost perfect. While still enjoyable, all the following seasons had issues. I didn't like the retconning of Beaver in season 2 in particular. The show got stuck on being "noir" meaning that everything had to turn out at least somewhat crappy. The movie ending really annoyed me because they went full in on that aspect so it's not surprising that the Hulu show went with a total F/U downer ending as well. Considering how much shipping was part of the fandom of the show (to my annoyance) it's a massive shot at a lot of the core audience to kill Logan at the end of the show.
I'm glad you included St. Elsewhere on this list. It was a great show that was ruined by a horrible ending. After that I couldn't even watch it in reruns.

How I Met Your Mother is the classic case of creators having an idea... and not reading the audience. We see it in many shows where its clear the Writer's Room was committed to one thing and refused to pivot at all.
I have been going through Veronica mars over the week for the first time and Logan might be one of the best characters to then hear yeah he dies after getting married just makes me make up head cannon " he lived somehow" It's areal slap in fans faces!
I hated that I fell for the show and then for it to get canceled just so that we get a movie many years later which had a good ending and then got a reboot only for them to ruin it at the end 😭

Scrubs and it's finale was surprisingly emotional. That was one of my favorite things about the show. As goofy or off the wall it could be, it effortlessly plucked at your heart whenever it wanted/needed to. Such a great show that doesn't get the respect it deserves in my opinion.

It probably doesn't make me popular, but I loved the original end of Will and Grace. Loved Will with Vince and thought Will and Grace"s kids getting together was hilarious and perfect.
S1 of 13 Reasons was actually brilliant to begin with. Fell apart at the end of the first season and was nothing but crap since. But, speaking as a counsellor myself, the first part of that first season was great and had REAL promise in terms of representation of youth mental health.
I will sing the praises of "The Shield" until I die. It was such a Rollercoaster of a show that actually stuck the landing perfectly. It's not a happy ending but the ending that it needed to pay off the entire series.
Vic Mackey went through all that, only to end up with his friends dead and/or hating him, his family in witness protection, and he's stuck in a desk job he can't get out of lest he destroy his immunity deal.
My dad loves St. Elsewhere. It's one of his favorite shows, and he loved the ending. He took it as the them saying "hey, it's just a show." He thinks it's one of the best series finale's of all time

You missed Newhart, another entry into the "It was all a dream" category, with the added twist that the dreamer was still Bob Newhart, but just in his original TV show (The Bob Newhart Show) from a decade prior to the start of the show Newhart.
Honestly, that was a brilliant ending. It wasn’t a cliché yet (I’d argue the success of that ending is what led to so many copycats like the Roseanne finale). It was genuinely surprising, but in a good way, and was a wink and nod to longtime fans of his.
The Good Place or Parks and Recreation had some of the best endings ever! They both show us where the characters go, also they have comedy and emotional resonance. So great!
St. Elsewhere actually had a bad ending on purpose--the writers were in a dispute with the producers and the ending was a giant middle finger intentionally.
In Dexter it would have been better if they hadn't found Deb's body after the storm that Dexter sailed into but they did find his. How I Met Your Mother ending made perfect sense as, like the daughter Penny says, the Mother was barely in the story. Hell, 90% of the stories Ted was telling had no connection to the Mother, Tracy, at all. The story of How I Met Your Mother was about the journey and yes in the end it was Ted asking Penny and Luke if they would be okay with Ted dating Robin, but it was also to reassure them that his love for their Mother was not fact that in the time they had together she was the only one for him. It was about Ted becoming the man he needed to be for when he met Tracy and how when she was gone that he wouldn't waste away because he knew that Tracy wouldn't have wanted that. If you don't understand that maybe you should watch it again and give up the notion that because Tracy is barely in the story that it was all a lie. If Ted had met Tracy at the start of the series I don't think she would have liked him and it took until the final season for them to both be ready for them to be together.
E.R. has a great ending imo. There’s an accident nearby, and the wounded are being brought in to the hospital as is daily life for them. It’s a great “Let’s go to work.” ending that keeps it going. Not everything that’s ending needs to end permanently, for the characters, I mean.
How I met your mother is a show where you have to admire the writer’s willingness to stick with their original idea that he’d end up with her since the beginning. Despite all the great chemistry he had with so many of the women along the way it was truly disappointing to see him with her. If not for that it would have been a great “everything goes full circle” moment.
I'll never understand the uproar about HIMYM ending. All the little signs, clues, happenstances were there for us to find out, or to make our brains hurt, but it finally gave the answer who the mother was, and how Ted met her. Why wasn't it happily ever after with her? I don't really cared. We saw her for ten minutes, and got answers to all the questions.
MASH had one of the best finales of all time. The original finale(s3) of Arrested Development was one of my favorites as well. Kind of felt that the netflix stuff was a bit of a let down.
Because Network TV used to have a lot more crossovers and backdoor pilots and online community made a chart that showed shows that crossed over with St Elsewhere then shows that crossover with those shows and on and on and almost every network Tv show was in a snow globe by the end of it
Several shows on this list I couldn't stand and yet they ruined themselves in such a way that made me laugh. All that time over the course of beginning to end and what those writers chose to do for their series was the same act of flushing a toilet after eating Taco Bell

Game of Thrones was a trainwreck well before the ending (I’d argue everything that happened after Jon is murdered and then resurrected got consistently worse and worse until the finale.) This is what happens when a show should have 10 10 episode seasons, and ends up with 6 10 episode seasons, plus 13 more episodes split among the final 2. Nothing that happened the final three seasons had a chance to happen naturally and in a satisfying way. That said, they included Dexter, which was every bit as much of a step down in quality as GoT was during its final 3 seasons, so yeah, they probably should have included it too.
And I totally agree with you about Lost; the finale was such a disappointment, especially because JJ had been insisting since season 1 that the ending wasn’t going to be exactly what it ended up being.
@@chloemchll3774 what I've read about Game of Thrones is that the show runners wanted to leave but were unwilling to have someone else teve over so they sort of skipped a lot of things to get it done as soon as possible and that's why we had shitty 6°, 7° and 8° seasons. It could've conceivable gone to season 10 being all the last 4 seasons with at least 10 episodes each...

I don't really understand why Roseanne's ending was bad. The final season was all super over the top. It made way more sense than pretty much any other ending would have
I completely disagree with "The 100". I LOVE ALL the seasons. I think season 5 is the weakest, yet still quite good. And I LOVE the finale. The main cast manage to "save" humanity. And that Clarke couldn't ascent works perfectly within the show. It also works that her friends (aka the main cast) would decide to stay with her. Even that Maddie wouldn't (and/or couldn't) stay, given what happened to her before the ascension, works very well. And yes, it IS a far departure from the early seasons, but it evolved very well, imo. The show has always been about the [sometimes changing] core group surviving and evolving into something better, with many hurdles along the way, pushing each and every one to their limit. And what could be more "evolved" and "pushing" that the build up to this ending: either "evolve enough" (from the point of view of this mysterious alien race) and everyone ascends or don''t and everyone dies.
How about LOST? I mean it wasn't a twist because everyone guessed that was what they were going to do years before but the writers specifically said they wouldn't use that end device. The ending only worked for the flash sideways and everything on the island was left unanswered.
I wouldn’t have minded the Lost ending if JJ hadn’t promised from season 1 on that it wouldn’t be the ending. It was an artificially created twist, because without JJ telling us otherwise, it was the ending most fans would have guessed (which could still be satisfying if it was well executed.)
And I think 24 was pretty terrible starting w s6 and it never got better. By s8’s finale they turned Jack into basically a superhero in what was supposed to be a grounded story about a counterterrorism agent.
Writing feels like it works too hard on the ending. Make your characters unique and interesting and make the ending something that will fit them. Do not push a ending for the sake of an agenda. Such as onward for example. You can feel the writer shoving the plot out of the way to force in "you can't get anymore time with someone who died" even though they have actual magic in the world. Would have been much better if he had the 5 minute scene with his dad and barley where the dad told Ian that he was special but it is time to let the barely raise him. That is all it would have taken.
The Battlestar Galatica reboot had one of the dumbest twists in the second to last season's finale, and they decided to just run with it the last season, finishing the show with a sad plop of an ending.
Idk, I actually thought the ending was reasonably well pulled off. My issue with BSG’s reboot is that somewhere in season 3, they started relying heavily on bottle episodes that didn’t really advance the main story in any meaningful way. Season 4 went back to the main story and while it may not have been the ending fans wanted, it did fit the story as told. My only real issue w it is we never found out who Starbuck’s dad was.

The key is 'finale'. By the time GoT's gawdawful finale came along, it had clearly been in a death-spiral for two seasons.

The 100 character assassination of Bellamy before killing him prior to the finale so he missed the reunion was an absolute travesty.
Honestly, they ruined Bellamy in season three and never really fixed it.

As soon as i hit play, i told the tv that "How I Met Your Mother better be Number 1!" I was not disappointed.
I think the MASH series finale was the best I've ever seen. I still get teary eyed every time I see it.
In Dexter it would have been better if they hadn't found Deb's body after the storm that Dexter sailed into but they did find his. How I Met Your Mother ending made perfect sense as, like the daughter Penny says, the Mother was barely in the story. Hell, 90% of the stories Ted was telling had no connection to the Mother, Tracy, at all. The story of How I Met Your Mother was about the journey and yes in the end it was Ted asking Penny and Luke if they would be okay with Ted dating Robin, but it was also to reassure them that his love for their Mother was not fact that in the time they had together she was the only one for him. It was about Ted becoming the man he needed to be for when he met Tracy and how when she was gone that he wouldn't waste away because he knew that Tracy wouldn't have wanted that. If you don't understand that maybe you should watch it again and give up the notion that because Tracy is barely in the story that it was all a lie. If Ted had met Tracy at the start of the series I don't think she would have liked him and it took until the final season for them to both be ready for them to be together.
E.R. has a great ending imo. There’s an accident nearby, and the wounded are being brought in to the hospital as is daily life for them. It’s a great “Let’s go to work.” ending that keeps it going. Not everything that’s ending needs to end permanently, for the characters, I mean.

How I met your mother is a show where you have to admire the writer’s willingness to stick with their original idea that he’d end up with her since the beginning. Despite all the great chemistry he had with so many of the women along the way it was truly disappointing to see him with her. If not for that it would have been a great “everything goes full circle” moment.

I'll never understand the uproar about HIMYM ending. All the little signs, clues, happenstances were there for us to find out, or to make our brains hurt, but it finally gave the answer who the mother was, and how Ted met her.
Why wasn't it happily ever after with her? I don't really cared. We saw her for ten minutes, and got answers to all the questions.
I had only heard of 2 of these shows...
MASH had one of the best finales of all time. The original finale(s3) of Arrested Development was one of my favorites as well. Kind of felt that the netflix stuff was a bit of a let down.
The. Best sitcom ending is obviously Mash, but I will submit family ties as an under appreciated gem.

Because Network TV used to have a lot more crossovers and backdoor pilots and online community made a chart that showed shows that crossed over with St Elsewhere then shows that crossover with those shows and on and on and almost every network Tv show was in a snow globe by the end of it

I’ve seen lots of people justify the ending of how I met your mother and say it makes sense but it doesn’t and is a terrible ending.

Several shows on this list I couldn't stand and yet they ruined themselves in such a way that made me laugh. All that time over the course of beginning to end and what those writers chose to do for their series was the same act of flushing a toilet after eating Taco Bell

Dexter I stopped watching on the season Deb says she's in love with her brother. Sure it's her step brother but they did grew up together so it was like real sibling's incest...
Game of Thrones was a trainwreck well before the ending (I’d argue everything that happened after Jon is murdered and then resurrected got consistently worse and worse until the finale.)
This is what happens when a show should have 10 10 episode seasons, and ends up with 6 10 episode seasons, plus 13 more episodes split among the final 2. Nothing that happened the final three seasons had a chance to happen naturally and in a satisfying way.
That said, they included Dexter, which was every bit as much of a step down in quality as GoT was during its final 3 seasons, so yeah, they probably should have included it too.
And I totally agree with you about Lost; the finale was such a disappointment, especially because JJ had been insisting since season 1 that the ending wasn’t going to be exactly what it ended up being.
The ending to Lost put me off watching serial drama's for life, so I haven't seen a single episode of Game of Thrones.
@@chloemchll3774 what I've read about Game of Thrones is that the show runners wanted to leave but were unwilling to have someone else teve over so they sort of skipped a lot of things to get it done as soon as possible and that's why we had shitty 6°, 7° and 8° seasons. It could've conceivable gone to season 10 being all the last 4 seasons with at least 10 episodes each...

But then I seen the pilot - which is arguably one of the best pilots ever! - then I decided to give it a chance... and after the second season I was just there cause I had nothing better to do... 🤷🏻♂️

I'm STILL bitter over how the Hulu revival of Veronica Mars ended to this day. Like, even though he was obviously just playing a role, when I see/hear Patton Oswalt in pretty much anything now, I just get pissed off, haha
Veronica Mars wasn't a series ending. It's clearly done to setup another season.
Not sure what alternate universe you saw these shows in, but almost half the shows on this list didn't even have "Twist" ending, i.e. The 100 = ZERO twist.
Seinfeld's ending was perfect! It was a great catharsis of all the frustration we feel at what awful people they all are.

Dexter's ending was fine. It was a reminder that he was evil and does not deserve a happy ending.

I completely disagree with "The 100". I LOVE ALL the seasons. I think season 5 is the weakest, yet still quite good. And I LOVE the finale. The main cast manage to "save" humanity. And that Clarke couldn't ascent works perfectly within the show. It also works that her friends (aka the main cast) would decide to stay with her. Even that Maddie wouldn't (and/or couldn't) stay, given what happened to her before the ascension, works very well.
And yes, it IS a far departure from the early seasons, but it evolved very well, imo. The show has always been about the [sometimes changing] core group surviving and evolving into something better, with many hurdles along the way, pushing each and every one to their limit. And what could be more "evolved" and "pushing" that the build up to this ending: either "evolve enough" (from the point of view of this mysterious alien race) and everyone ascends or don''t and everyone dies.

How about LOST? I mean it wasn't a twist because everyone guessed that was what they were going to do years before but the writers specifically said they wouldn't use that end device. The ending only worked for the flash sideways and everything on the island was left unanswered.

I wouldn’t have minded the Lost ending if JJ hadn’t promised from season 1 on that it wouldn’t be the ending. It was an artificially created twist, because without JJ telling us otherwise, it was the ending most fans would have guessed (which could still be satisfying if it was well executed.)

And I think 24 was pretty terrible starting w s6 and it never got better. By s8’s finale they turned Jack into basically a superhero in what was supposed to be a grounded story about a counterterrorism agent.
Writing feels like it works too hard on the ending. Make your characters unique and interesting and make the ending something that will fit them. Do not push a ending for the sake of an agenda. Such as onward for example. You can feel the writer shoving the plot out of the way to force in "you can't get anymore time with someone who died" even though they have actual magic in the world. Would have been much better if he had the 5 minute scene with his dad and barley where the dad told Ian that he was special but it is time to let the barely raise him. That is all it would have taken.
The Battlestar Galatica reboot had one of the dumbest twists in the second to last season's finale, and they decided to just run with it the last season, finishing the show with a sad plop of an ending.
The Cylons may have had a plan, but the showrunners sure didn't know what it was.
Idk, I actually thought the ending was reasonably well pulled off.
My issue with BSG’s reboot is that somewhere in season 3, they started relying heavily on bottle episodes that didn’t really advance the main story in any meaningful way. Season 4 went back to the main story and while it may not have been the ending fans wanted, it did fit the story as told.
My only real issue w it is we never found out who Starbuck’s dad was.
