Great review as always. Bought the UHD50 a few months back. Absolutely love it. Able to get 130" screen at a 13' throw distance. I was also pleasantly surprised by the sound of the internal speakers but ended up going with a soundbar.
I have the projector and did not have to change the EDID mode for 3D. I did update the firmware so that could be the difference. I have a Benq 1075 and the 3D on the Optoma is a step up. Usually my wife won’t watch 3D on the Benq but sat through my demo of Mad Max Fury Road to the point that I went to bed and she stayed up to watch the rest of the movie! Another comment I can add is the image we are getting from Directv is much improved with the Optoma. I project onto a 135” screen and rarely watch Directv with our Benq, it really shows the signal limitations. Whatever improvements in upscaling and the increased resolution with the Optoma make this a very viewable image with a lower quality signal. Westworld on the Directv HBO feed looked great. Great review as always Majestechs, keep them coming!
I'm playing mine from an Nvidia Shield. That could be the difference since the UI is in 4k. I tried pretty much everything and that was the only thing that worked.
It's a pretty big step up, I was surprised how much. I will add one caveat, you need to have a way to mitigate the "halo" or border area around the image. Majestechs mentions this issue in the video. In my case I have a motorized screen with built in black velvet type border. The screen sits about 8" out from a dark gray wall so the halo becomes a non-issue. If I had a screen flush or close to flush with my wall without some sort of material to absorb the light, I would find it very distracting.
I also have the w1070 and looking to upgrade to the uhd50. I have a 120" Elite screen (CineWhite 1:1 gain), should I get a CineGrey screen for a better picture or the one I have would be ok?
Why is it cheaper than the UHD 60/65? I am confused as to where this sits in Optoma’s lineup. Is this better than the 60/65 or is this a budget version of those models?
I can't wait to get mine! I currently have an Optoma GT1080 3D Gaming short throw projector and I am in love! I game and watch bluray/3D on a super clear, full of color 119 inches of fucking epic awesomeness! So I can only imagine what the UHD51A will look like! Us projector people that spent the cash on a motorized screen, surround sound home theater with a bangin receiver and black out curtains are on another level of entertainment! Why do TV's even exist!?
Ended up getting the UHD51ALV I wanted the BenQ HT 3550 but the recent firmware nightmare, numerous glitches, split screen, and 2400 lumens make me wonder if they rushed the unit. I am late to the 3D universe but wanted but never saw Tron Legacy,The Martian, and Avatar. The eventual cable compression codec is standard now for the big 3 USA cable providers at 720p60. As for 4k it might get used on streaming sites otherwise Im using Roku Ultra,3d player, and PLEX . I was disappointed there were no Black Friday or Cyber Monday the 200 special discount has been static for months now and the UHD52ALV was recently released @1799.00 3500 lumens and white chassis.
thank you for the video review of these Optoma projectors. very helpful. I own one of them, UHD51A, and too had a little issue initially setting up the alexa voice assistant part, but once I got it to work properly, it was stable and solid. IMO the quality of the images are outstanding right out of the box, though I did tweak a few things. Great value. I am projecting from about 10 1/2 ft. 96" screen. hard to go back to 1080P when one sees the better picture of a 4H UHD with HDR. -- but I digress, mostly wanted to say you did a outstanding job in this review and video. Keep up the great work.
Have you had a chance to see the Uhd51ALV? I was ready to get the 51A, but I saw this newer one. Different color wheel and 3000 lumens opposed to 2400. Any input?
Great review. I’ve had the UHD50 since February and I love it. As you mentioned the only downside is the light border but it’s only noticeable in dark scenes. Keep up the good work.
hi Chris ,nice review like always, I got 2 questions: 1) do best buy sells this ? 2) and if Not ?..most like Amazon, but I'm iffy about their delivery since is projector and I don't believe would handle it with care. can I trust Amazon with hanled care ?
Bro I've watched most of your videos and I'm super impressed with your content and your knowledge. I like the delivery but sometimes you move a little fast for those of us that are new to the whole world of this kind of tech. I have subbed to your channel and again I'm loving it. I do have a question or two. 1. Will this be a good projector for a living room environment with moderate ambient light? 2. Can you hide the light halo with the screen border? Sorry, 3. I'm about 18' away from the wall that I want to use the projector on but it's like a lot of the new homes in Cali it has basically a dedicated spot for an entertainment system will this be a good projector to pick up? The space is 8' W x 7.5' H. Thanks any help will be appreciated. There are so many choices I'm almost to the point where I'm going to buy a 86" 4k tv and be done with it.
Hi Chris, a lot of your viewers have the same question, would you choose this projector over the UHD60 or 65? What projector would you recommend with a budget of $3000?
It depends on whether you prefer brightness over color accuracy. I'll likely keep my UHD60 because I need the brightness since I have a large screen. The UHD60 has great color, it's just not as accurate. However, if you need 3d then the UHD51A is the only option.
got my uhd51. was amazed at picture and wow the remote was back lit a unexpected but welcome addition. this projector is as good as everyone says it is. only issue now is getting my harmony remote to read the fire stick 4k remore
Excellent review! Thank you. My beloved JVC RS-10 finally went out and now I'm thinking about the Optoma UHL55 (LED LAMP) which I don't think has even shipped yet. I am tired of paying all this money for lamps. I must have bought literally 10-12 lamps for the JVC. :( I'm using this cheap, RCA for about 100 bucks and I'm having great picture withdrawal pains! LOL It looks shockingly good for the money except for a MAJOR flaw: It does not have lens-shift, and you have to mount it = to the middle of the screen, or you get fuzzy side focus, which I'm suffering with. I have to say, If I could mount it that way, for $100 it's a SHOCKINGLY good pic! LOL :)
Hey Chris great review, but I have a quick question. I have an epson 2040 projector with an LCD chip how noticeable/unnoticeable would you say the rainbow effects are on the uhd51?
Thanks for this review. Do you have any advises as far as wireless projectors goes? I saw that HDMI wireless dongles exist. Would you recommend these? Thanks.
looks to be a very good projector I don't like voice control and think 3d is dying so the cheaper uhd50 would be a good choice for me shame it doesn't come in black. My big question for you would be what the best option screen I should get with a projector of this type? My intentions is to mount it on my ceiling and pulling it down myself to save some cash I'm new to projection and there are sooooo many screens to choose from it's almost nerve racking to shop. One thing I have learned from watching your content in the last week is that Optoma is the way to go. Oh and last thing I will only be using this for movies and gaming (xbox one X ) so that being said is it still a great choice?
Hi! Love the videos - very informative!😀 Question though: any news of any future Optoma protectors coming down the pipeline that have both the 4K features for movies like the UHD 50 and the 16ms response time for video games like the Darbee? Thanks!😁
Hi, I bought this uhd 51 projector I am very satisfied with the product! I wanted to know, does it have the forward, reverse function? I mean picture adjustment! (the inclination) Kindly let me know! Thank you
Hey Chris, there are some great deals going on right now with both, the optima uhd 51a and the Ben q 2550. This will be my first projector. I'm going to be using it on a 125" acoustic screen. I'm into gadgets so I'm leaning towards the 51a to use with alexa . Can I use the harmony hub and get the same effect. The projector seem very similar. The benq is about $300 less than the optima. What your opinion on this.
@@chopperg9443 It's fantastic! Nice blacks and really sharp picture. I actually think it looks better than the last two 2018 4k tv's I had. Got it back 10' for 120" pic. Get it, you'll be very happy. Set it to Cinema mode and eco. Ultra detail 1 and sharpness 3 or 4.
Hey Chris, I just watched your Review of the Optoma UHD51A. I'm looking for the best Projector under $1K with a built-in Media player so I can play movies off a USB stick, do you have a projector you can recommend or do you think the UHD51A is the best out there for that right now? Thank you, Tyler
Thank you for the awesome reviews as always & love them. This optoma is nice, but I can't afford over $1,000. I just got the lg pf50ka and it's good enough. My next one might be the optoma gt1080darbee.
I have a Paragliding school US Paragliding and we have a great movie room slash class room. I am upgrading from the 5030ub that shuts down a lot. Looking at the projector u have the UHD 60 or this 51a. Which one do u like better?
There is a 3000 lumen variant of this projector now (LV). I have a dark lit theatre room with no windows and a 100" silver ticket screen, projector is about 10 feet from the screen, would the extra lumens be necessary or did you find the 2400 lumens sufficient?
Majestechs so my old projector mount is drilled in too far back (the pic is too big even at the lowest optical zoom)... I set the digital zoom to -3 which works great for everything but the OSD and 3D just ignores it. Any advice that doesn't involve moving the mount closer to the screen? 😂😂
How large of a screen can you get with this projector? I am currently remodeling my basement and want to put in a movie theater. Is the manual available online so I can run all my wires and power when I do drywall so everything looks clean and professional. I want to mount it to the ceiling
Hello, the uhd51a is on sale on Amazon. For 1199. I would like 3d but it's not the biggest deal. I have also been following the uhd60. Is the picture quality on the uhd60 really better than the uhd51a. The projector will be going into a designated theater room with light control. What do you think?
Great review very informative is there any 4k projector that has at least 50k hours of lamp life because I'm think of spending on a 4k projector my budget is 1500 dollars but I watch tv at least 10 hrs a day and with this projector now you can see it on day time so i just want if there is no 4k projector that has 50k hrs of lamp life my other question how much to replace lamp on 1500 dollars projector for example on this model how much is the parts pls let me know thanks
On the UHD51A specs , it states that you'll get 100" image from 10' away, but you're saying that the UHD51A will produce a 100" image from "less than 9 feet away". Which statement is more accurate?
Do you think I would be okay with this projector for home use? I was looking at the UHZ60. Is that worth the extra $3k dollars? I like not having to replace the bulb. Will that be a big issue with this one?
Do you like this projector over the ViewSonic PX727-4K? I've found them comparably priced. I like the idea of the lens shift, but it's not needed for my set up. I'm curious to your opinion on which projector has the overall better image. Thank you for your reviews!
This one is on the top of the list so far. But I'm a big 3D fan and I'm a bit worried that the DLP link glasses will get out of sync which would be a nuisance. Is it the same problem for every beamer or is there a difference. I saw an older beamer that would get out of sync with every bright image. Any info would be helpful thanks.
I'm curious, when it comes to 4k projectors, when you play anything 1080p does it give a sharp image or sharper image or is it like upscale on 4k tv where it's more a smooth picture? Thanks
After 2 days of trial and error I have had similar issues with this unit. The best experience so far is the 3D Is by far the best working once I figured out how to access the EDID setting to 1.4 . But the other features are little harder to navigate depending on some settings or the source material your pulling from will allow you access to the menu otherwise it is locked out . i bought 2 Ruipro 4K HDMI cables 10m hey work great on 3D Bluray and Charter Spectrum DCT but both those reside at 1080p and 720p60, The Roku Ultra WILL NOT WORK with the long cables i tried the spare no dice could only get it to work with a 6 foot High Speed HDMI . The halo shadow border only seems visible on PLEX videos. I've got some fine tuning to do with my Royal brand gimbal mount. The pixel shifting is very noticeable on my 92" as I'm sitting only about 9 to 10 feet from the screen.
I am planning on getting a projector for my pool. I live in Florida and am outside year round. I know that they look best at night (dark) and won't be able to use it in direct sunlight but I am looking for the best and brightest option under $1000. I am currently thinking about buying the Optoma HD39 Darbee with the elite screens yardmaster 120" manual screen. Any thoughts or suggestions?
hey i just wanted to know in your opinion is the Epson 5040ube wireless a good projector i hear it has power problems and is there anymore good wireless projectors out there thanks
What is the best distance and resulting screen size for this projector? 11 feet from wall, 12 feet from wall, 100 inch diag, 120 inch diag, 135 inch diag? again for best picture quality?
How would you hook your sound system up to the projector so you still have Dolby Atmos. I know you would use HDMI but which input and output would you use?
I have an older higher end projector (1080p) sony vpl-vw95es and it's great. But I've been thinking of selling it and going 4k (optoma uhd50/51). Do you think it would be worth switching.
Hey Chris, Can I know how to install netflix nor prime on the projector? Like I have just purchased it and I couldnt figure out how to install the apps on the projector. Can you please tell me how you were able to use those apps on your projector?
Finally! The first real review on the Optoma UHD51A. Outstanding production quality as always in your reviews sir. 😉

Yes.
I would love to see you do review of the Optoma 400ust projector.
Sweet projector, good video when got sometime can you see if you can review a epson 4K projectors thank you for reading
What do you recommend? Optoma UHD 50 ($1200) or Epson 4000 ($1500)?
I'm curious, when it comes to 4k projectors, when you play anything 1080p does it give a sharp image or sharper image or is it like upscale on 4k tv where it's more a smooth picture? Thanks
hi what is the difference with the uhd51? thanks love tour test and video
Chris will you be getting your hands on a JVC LX-UH1?
I was wondering if you knew if Optima fixed the fade issue around the screen or if there is a DYI fix to get the full image?
How does it compare to the uhd 60? Not sue if the light border around the picture will bother me?
I know there are better options for contrast and color, but the UHD50 can currently be had for under $900 some places. hard to pass that up!
optoma uhd50/51 or the uhd 60? what does the uhd60 offers for the diference in price besides the higher amount of lumens?
should I get the UHD51 or the BenQ TK800M ?
just bought 51a for 1150$
I hope I'll be pleased
should I run 1080p files or 4k files through it?
Would you go for the uhd50 or uhd60 ? Thanks
Why is UHD50 and 51A came out after UHD60...shouldn't it be the other way around? I thought the higher the number, the better lol.
How loud are these protectors? I have read a few reviews complain of a severe buzz sound.
Hello! I'm creating a 350 "screen. Do you think the HD50 will work well for me?
Does it come with a ton of input lag? I wonder if you are able to play fps games on it.
Is the uhd52alv the new version of this projector and if so what are the upgrades
Optoma has balls putting a “game mode” on this thing considering it has over 70ms of lag in it’s fastest setting.
how about the picture quality(Sharpness and Contract) when compared to UHD60/65 ?
