Agree with Danny on this. There’s a huge history between the two countries. Outside of football everyone gets along but sport brings out so much passion that we miss in everyday life. No problem with it. Amplifies the battle.

England played seven teams (including Scotland) at Euro 2020 and how many anthems got drowned out with boos? Seven. The hypocrisy is unreal.
and it was sthe flower of scotland that was booed...i heard it as did the whole of the uk who watched it.
The italian anthem was boo'ed by about 5% of the crowd in Euro 2020, you can barely hear the whistles after the first few notes. In this game it was over half the scottish fans who totally drowned the anthem out.
I wouldn't say 'drowned out'. I don't mind the booing anyway, but it was definitely louder from the Scotland fans. But then it would be, wouldn't it? They are a nationalist supporting nation who resent the English.

God Save the King is a UK anthem, not an English Anthem. Scotland has Flower of Scotland, but it is not a National Anthem. The Scottish supporters were booing their own anthem. Totally ridiculous when the Royal Family is very proud of its Balmoral home and those from that part of Scotland both respect and accept their neighbours.

As a Welshman when the British national anthem is played it means nothing to me. I view it as the English national anthem only. The Welsh national anthem resonates with me far deeper!

I agree with Murphy. You can't nullify every little thing in the game, through fear of "offending" some gentle soul. Otherwise, you will kill all of the atmosphere in the game. Allow the passion of a few cheers and boos.

Danny is 100% right when he talks about the atmosphere and passion. Is it right to boo national anthems? Personally I don't like it but I recognise that everybody is different and have their own views and values, and it can add spice to a game. As an Englishman I think everybody's national anthem should be respected, including our own, BUT let's not pretend we don't boo other nation's anthems, because we do!
Well considering the anthem for Scotland is flower of Scotland I think booing the English anthem is in fact perfectly okay

You cannot expect a passionate Scot with a few pints of beer already in him to respect an anthem about the British Monarchy... the Flower of Scotland is about beating back King Edward... and by the same token England fans always boo the Flower of Scotland, especially the parts about pushing back King Edward's army. I'm with Murphy. It is what it is. As long as the bitterness doesn't get to violence, it's a non-story.

I remember being at Lansdowne Road for an Ireland vs England "friendly" in 1995 when the England fans decided to do a bit of Feng Shui to the place, ripping out the terrace seats & throw them on Ireland supporters below them. Would have been happy if it was just a booing incident tbh.

The English anthem makes reference to "crushing Scots". The Scots have every right to boo that song. It means something very different to countries other than England.

@@jaspalmer8555 I get what you’re saying, but drowning out a National Anthem is a bit different from drowning out a one minute silence in memory of someone who has passed on. Shame for Craig Browns family really, as it could have been quite a touching moment for them to have him remembered respectfully at the 150th anniversary match. However to have it ruined by England fans taking it too far by booing is quite sad. Then again, why should we expect anything different as taking things too far is historically what England fans do best.

They’re both wrong, it’s nothing to do with atmosphere or the SNP (a ridiculous point as the SNP are very unpopular with football fans up here)
We boo it for two reasons:
1. The anthem is anti-scottish
2. The royal family are deeply unpopular in Scotland, particularly among the working class
Jim White is 100% aware of the motivation of the Scotland fans booing the anthem, and is making a big story out of nothing for clicks and views, the two English people in the room with him aren’t even that bothered by it, they’re just incorrect in their assumptions.

I'm Scottish and I'm no fan of sturgeon but to say that she caused it when the same behaviour from us has happened since before she was born is just ridiculous

Isn't it interesting how talkSPORT are willing to spend 12 minutes debating whether Scottish fans booing the "English" National Anthem is disrespectful, and only make a passing reference to English fans disrupting a minute's silence for someone who'd died and the victims of a disaster in another country? One is clearly more disrespectful than the other, but guess which one they choose to focus on? Jim ends by saying "why can't you just stand in silence?" when the English fans couldn't do exactly that when the clue is literally in the announcement "minute's silence". As others have said, English fans routinely boo other National anthems (not to mention booing their own players for - checks notes - openly opposing racism), and Scottish fans boo other National anthems, but I don't remember Israel getting their knickers in a twist about it. Typical tinpot Little England mentality, holding other countries to standards they can't keep to themselves. But by all means, let's have a 3-man panel discuss the subject of how Scottish fans should behave without any Scottish representation present (I know I know; "Jim White is Scottish"... but given his track record of opining on Scottish football, counting him as Scottish makes about as much sense as counting your dog's lungworm as one of the family pets. Danny Murphy, who isn't Scottish, spoke a lot more sense here).
Would I have booed the "English" National Anthem? No; that's not a thing I do, nor do I support or encourage it. But I find it hard to condemn my compatriots who saw fit to do so given they're booing a song that literally used to have a line about crushing the people of the very country they've turned up to the stadium to support. Compare that to the Scottish anthem which has always had the lines "those days are past now, and in the past they must remain". Even so, I wouldn't bat an eyelid at English fans booing that. My Mother in Law (who is now in her seventies) has refused to sing the UK National Anthem since her school days because the idea that any human being can be born ruler of any other human(s) is not compatible with her ethical values.
And trust Simon Jordan to slip his own politics into it. You could probably fit his entire understanding of Scottish politics onto the back of a fag packet, which is why he blames Alex Salmond (who hasn't been relevant for almost a decade) and Nicola Sturgeon (who is no longer First Minister) for being "divisive". They've been divisive in the same way a surgeon removing a tumour is being divisive: It's arguably correct but casts a misleading inference on their motivations. As if the reasons for the Scottish perception of England is generated solely in Scotland. English people will look everywhere for reasons nobody likes them except the flipping mirror. Then when England are playing anyone else, they'll have the audacity to ask why Scots are invariably mostly on the other side.
I like Danny, and agree that this has happened for many years, but I don't think he understood Simon's point that we've become a far more disrespectful, angry and intolerant society as a whole, and the fact Simon expects this behaviour is an indictment on our society. Back then people might have booed, and I know it sounds contradictory, but they still had better manners, empathy, less selfishness and generally a bit more happier... What would happen if alcohol was allowed in matches, and not have the threat of being prosecuted/banned because of the infinitely better security we have today, wasn't around. I think we would be in a much worse state than ever before... all we have done is put a bandage on a problem

Danny is spot on. We have moved passed rampant hooliganism to fans booing an anthem being such an atrocity is progress. Also remember why The celtic nations do this, because hundreds of years ago England decided they would have no regard for our culture and decided to conquer us.

The Welsh also boo that ‘uk anthem’, why is it always Scotland that gets picked out for this? 😂 Most folk from England don’t consider that anthem their’s, anyway, I think they consider their anthem to be Jerusalem (if I’m not mistaken).

Simon, Jim and Danny have not understood this is cultural and political. We were not booing the England team, or the anthem. We were booing centuries of English repression over Scotland. Completely acceptable. As if Ukraine fans won't boo the Russian anthem when they next play one day.

Danny Murphy is spot on for a change. Jim and Simon are clearly compeltely pro-royalty and can't see that anyone may have rightful views which are against the notion of royalty, add into this the history between Scotland and England and the role royalty have played in this it is 100% understandable people in Scotland would want to protest against them and agaisnt the England nation anthem which glorifies them to the nth degree. It's also hilarious Simon seems to have amnseia about the countless times English fans have booed other countries national anthems.
