    Honestly I'm kind of surprised you didn't bring up the Stalkers, since their AI shows clear signs of inspiration from what Bruce Straley intended for the hunter AI to have in TLOU1; they hide from you, they wait around corners to attack when you pass by, they flank and attack from behind, and sometimes even disengage when you're demolishing their kin.

    Just a note on party npcs covering: I was watching my boyfriend play through the game after I did, and noticed in one of the encounters on Day 1 with Dina, that the zombies actually did notice her out of cover, and once the fight was over she acknowledged it and said she messed up. I didn't see this type of scenario happen in the game again but thought it was a really nice touch.

  • @DKZK21

    Glad someone noticed just how much the game refined the formula from the original. I think almost everyone was so laser-focused on talking about the story, which admittedly IS the main draw for most fans so fair enough, that a huge number of YTers quickly filed the whole "game" side of the videogame under "more of the same" so they could focus on giving their hot takes on the stuff everyone was already talking about. I found that very frustrating because I really enjoyed the experience of actually PLAYING despite all of my issues with the narrative.
    So thanks for filling that gap in the "videogame critique" side of RUclips.

      My take was that it wasn't an impressive addition but if it doesn't change or at least rarely changes (unlike Watch Dogs Legion where no one is even called by name but a handful or so of fixed characters), it can serve as a cool anchor for discussion when speedrunning, replaying a hard segment or just a regular playthrough.
      I didn't think it was a bad inclusion but Hero and some other experiences have made me reconsider it to be pretty cool even if you are very unlikely to hear/learn every name in an area and that would obnoxious besides being beyond parody.
      It just isn't the type of thing that will make me care about a specific NPC when they all want me dead even if beaten into an inch of their life and being spared. I think I remember the intent being to be build empathy but it didn't seem to land if so.
      This isn't Fallout or Elder Scrolls where these characters have lives and usefulness beyond one encounter at an outpost. Abby's dad was an exception who needed to be explained in the following game as much as he was a sensible place to build a motivation from.

      @@Peasham I think he's still firmly in the anti-hero role, and if his desired end state clashes with what the DMC crew want to do, he'd probably either fly solo, or actively fight the team to achieve his aims. That isn't to say the point of the game is to fight him, but I could see him thinking his way is optimal, and if they want to get in the way of that, then they're obstacles to be overcome in his desire to overcome the big bad.

    • @bdpchamp
      @bdpchamp 3 года назад +3

      @@Peasham I would strongly argue that Vergil was NOT a villain in DMC 5. Vergil’s internal conflict between his need for power (that was only enforced by his loss to Mundus that led to him being enslaved as Nelo Angelo in the first place), and the bitter pill of humility that Dante imparted on him by showcasing the strength in embracing the side of humanity, makes complete sense to be his driving force once he’s freed from nelo angelo and in his weakened state. He’s torn, and has regret over many aspects of his life and his lust for strength (as told through several lines of dialogue from V) but at the same time is still ridden with his fears of losing control and not being able to protect his loved ones. It’s this concept of : what’s the point of surrendering yourself to love if you don’t have the strength to protect that which you love? Hence his literal split into two beings. Urizen’s actions are far less representative of Vergil in that urizen is just a physical manifestation of those fears, insecurities, rage and negativity. V was far closer to who Vergil actually is. A point could be made that the split between Urizen and V wasn’t truly 50/50, potentially 60/40 as despite V being the “human” side of Vergil, he still retained SOME demonic energy, which insinuates that Vergil was closer to the path of reaching a middle ground than one might think. By the time Vergil becomes a complete being again after the merging, all of the villainous or malicious qualities we see from Urizen are completely gone. He has no concern over ruling the world, the demon world, or bringing about destruction. He simply wants to continue his rivalry with Dante out of pride, seemingly finally content with the level of strength he has currently. While him aspiring for greater heights might always be apart of his character, similar to a stereotypical shounen anime protagonist, it no longer is for the wrong reasons, and no longer will prohibit him from forming bonds and learning to embrace every piece of himself, even if his stubborn and standoffish nature may make it more difficult. I guess my whole point here is to say that the route vergil took in DMC 5 was a natural progression for his psychological state after all that he had been through and the traits we’ve been showcased of him throughout the entirety of the series. He may serve as a fight for Dante, but I would not say he is a villain.

    • @Bestgameplayer10
      @Bestgameplayer10 3 года назад +2

      @@bdpchamp Nah, he’s a villain. He’s killed many innocents just to achieve absolute power and for what? To protect the ones he loves? He was willing to kill Dante over it. And assuming he got some woman knocked up previously to DMC3 (as shown in DMC4) which is why he fought for power so much in 3, he was willing to kill his own brother for it? Even afterwards, he doesn’t even try to rekindle anything with his son (which I guess I can kinda understand considering Nero is grown now and he wasn’t there for him throughout his life and maybe feels shame for it if the cutscene DLC is anything to go by), and I’m sure his baby mother died at some point in DMC4 when Fortuna was attacked. Having power to protect people was never his actual agenda. If it was, he veered off course of that after his soul was freed by Dante in DMC1. He even went as far as to mutilating and potentially killing Nero to seek power, even if he didn’t realize it was his son. Dante was able to catch on so I’m sure Vergil could’ve, especially since it seems that only people with Sparda blood has white hair. Also, Vergil leaves Nero a book saying to await his return like he has further plans for power. And this is just speculation but if a DMC6 were to happen, I would assume that Vergil finally defeats Dante and tries to take over the human world all over again just for Nero to probably having to kill Vergil himself.
      The only reason Vergil gives anti-hero vibes is because of his relationship with Dante which comes off somewhat playful only because they’ve been rivals for years (which is somewhat common also in other stories where rivals themselves also notice their battles always end in stalemates) and they are twins after all. Alongside the fact that he respects Dante which is why he doesn’t defeat him while he’s still tired when V and Urizen combine him back into himself. It seems alongside having power and becoming Satan (or I guess Mundus), Vergil also just wants to prove to himself that he’s better than Dante which seems he may or may not have a inferiority complex with.

    This is exactly why I was so excited for the remake of Part I and the fact that it takes the original's spot as my favorite game of all time, since it added all the enemy enhancements of Part II and fixed almost every single glitch that made the original game's combat feel *so* goddamn unreliable, especially since I like to play these games on grounded most of the time. I seriously don't get why I keep hearing people say "This remake is so unnecessary, the original game holds up perfectly fine!" Like, yeah, it was ahead of it's time for being one of the last big PS3 games, but holy hell is there so much bullshit when it comes to combat encounters in the original and remaster. The remake doesn't get nearly half the praise it deserves imo.

    When it comes to the Narrative, I've mostly just come to the observation that "It was paced very poorly, drew out the many-times-told 'Be Ready to Dig Two Graves' lesson far too long, and was largely unnecessary" (I certainly was left highly content with the first game's ending as I was Telltale's The Walking Dead: Season One that I had played prior, but perhaps that's my preference for shorter or singular stories rather than long-running series talking). When it comes to the Gameplay, it certainly seems like a big step up from the first game from what I've seen. While folks like Rabbit's Respawn & Time Fool have done some fantastic 'Aggressive' or 'Stylistic' encounters with the first game's AI, such encounters speak more about their means of exploiting or encountering the AI rather than about the AI itself that in my experience with the PS3 version was not very compelling to interact with. But Part II evidently improves that aspect notably and it's been damned refreshing to actually see that explored in detail! (I can't recall seeing anyone feed Runners to Clickers before).
    That said, I just don't feel the need to fetch the game for myself as it stands. I got my fill with the first game just as I did with Telltale's The Walking Dead: Season One (Season Two didn't leave me regretting my time with it at all, but it didn't convince me that Season One needed a follow-up and I've only maintained interest in future installments due to Jared Emerson-Johnson's music), plus I have a large wishlist of PlayStation 4 games from Gravity Dash/Rush 1&2 to Uncharted 4 and the Ryu ga Gotoku/Yakuza franchise (Thanks to your *glowing* recommendation) to Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War's elusive PS4 release that I've been waiting to see if a PS4 Pro or PS5 would be the better choice to play them on (With the latter sounding like the one at the moment) since I'm primarily on PC these days, where I'm eagerly trying to catch up to such games as AMID EVIL, DOOM Eternal, DUSK, A Night in the Woods, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, Titanfall 2 & more. Nevertheless, I do hope The Last of Us Part II doesn't get neglected in the wave of PS5 Patches bringing games such as Ghosts of Tsushima up-to-speed with the newer hardware with higher frame-rates and other technical benefits so folks having/wanting a good time with the game may have a slightly better one.
    Putting my long-winded babble aside, great to see you doing what you do once again, no matter how understandably rare it may be!

    Man...this was probably one of the best analysis of TLOU2 I've seen yet. At least on its combat mechanics. Admittedly I'm biased because I do enjoy the game, political and social justice issues aside. It seems to me that everyone hating on it are simply dismissing it as existing only to make some statement about social inclusion. The also seem to be taking the attack of one of the leading male characters as an attack against straight white dudes. But as you said, the game really shines at the very least graphically and through it's combat mechanics. The story, even though it has some pacing issues could even arguably be defended, especially when compared to some of the empty characters and narratives of so many current gen games. It's shitty that a large swath of the gaming community is shitting on this title solely because it somehow brings out their own insecurities I guess? Oh well, I'd be willing to bet that this will be one of those games that starts to become critically acclaimed over time, when everyone suddenly has an "epiphany". Loved that you dived into how much work ND put into their gaming mechanics... got really tired of people saying "Oh, they're just copy pasting the gameplay mechanics from the first game; its not innovative" then your video comes out of the blue and proves them wrong. imho as well, I really love the direction ND took for this franchise. Great job on the video, will be subscribing. Cheers my dude.

    I think this was just a case of 10/10 gameplay with what felt like a 3/10 story due to what the story was expected to become.
    The story is likely still a 6/10, but with it being naughty dog you expect at least a 9/10, that disappointment makes it feel worse no matter how good it is.

    Can say on your seraphite play, least in some encounters for me, when I did stealth some guys (and same with the Wolves ofc but w/o the whistles), they'd check up on them to wonder what happened, so is possible but guess it can depend how the A.I. interacts per encounter

      I never had a Kessler video. I had one on Alden but I didn’t think it lived up to my current standards so I removed it. I definitely do plan on doing Kessler though as a redux type situation like how I redid Solidus.

    After watching quite a few TLOU 2 videos i think this is the only one that really aligned with what i think of the game in terms of the overall quality of the gameplay, i thought the narrative was pretty good, if not flawed in some aspects, but i really enjoyed the gameplay, which i was not expecting after the first underwhelming in terms of gameplay, the game had me looking forward to the next combat encounter, which was pretty surprising, great video as always

  • @NicoleCringe

    Im not going to excuse why the AI is so worse in TLOU compared to the demo, but they did say in the Grounded documentary that when the AI did some of the smarter stuff it led to a lot of deaths being not really the players fault and could come off as a 'bullshit' death, so they toned the AI down.
    I wish the original AI would've been ported to Grounded but nah, the only real change is enemy's path a bit differently and more random (which leds to bugs) and they can hear you easier. Thats about the only change

    You comment about how you love dynamic dismemberment in games (me too!) means I gotta ask if you've played Ninja Gaiden 2, because that is dynamic dismemberment: the video game.
    Anyway, excellent video, one of the very few good ones about TLOU2 on RUclips.

    As someone who is in the crowd that despises what this game did on the story end, I do find it hard not to get a bit giddy at the nuances of the AI you point out here, I keep telling people that I don't really care that much about fancy graphics compared to the fact I want destructible environments and F.E.A.R. 1-like AI since that to me is what feels "next gen" because of how rare it is to see. If it serves the gameplay well, I'm gonna like the gameplay. Unfortunately I still don't think I can really recommend TLOU2 to people in good conscience knowing all the shit that went on behind the scenes and also the really stupid decisions made with the story.

    The AI has improved a lot better in the sequel. Are you going to do Next Favorite on Judgment, FOTNS Lost Paradise, & Yakuza 7 Like A Dragon? What do you think of Kiwami 2, is it better or is it worse than the first Kiwami?

  • @SamuraiSnaaake

    You say "none of this happened in the final game", yet it happened in my playthroughs - not the same way, but "enemies lay in wait to attack me" and "enemy runs away and I have to hunt him down". So I don't know, man. Happened to me on Hard, too.

    There’s actually a video where someone breaks down the meaning of all Seraphite whistles in the game. It’s pretty cool, it’s decodable to the point where you can gleam mostly the same information as wolf enemies. Oh, and that one seraphite guy saying “you are empty”, was speaking in metaphors, not that you’re literally out of ammo.

Also shooting an enemy in the leg, grabbing them, and either using the switchblade for a stealth kill, or shooting them in the head are terrific moves. *BUT HOW IN THE F&%$ DID I NEVER THINK TO SHOOT AN ENEMY IN THE LEG, GRAB THEM, AND THEN FEED THEM TO A CLICKER?* @Hero, dude...you are a GOD amongst ants.
