Othrodox churches, or Eastern Orthodox as they are often called, have a lot of theology to cover in 2 minutes, but here's a quick and oversimplified rundown.
@@konnorporter5115 if someone asked for a brief wiki version of what exactly Orthodox Christianity is, I think this sums it up as well as it can be in a very brief description. If someone asked me what it was, I would be talking for about 15 minutes with another hour to go and the person would just then be realizing they had made a mistake in asking.

I converted to Orthodoxy last February and was baptized this March. Funnily enough, I found orthodoxy through a video game, Civilization 6. I converted from Southern Baptist though I didn't go to church in the months leading up to my conversion. I found the services to be boring and bland, so I stopped going. I didn't feel like my Baptist church actually got me closer to God, it was just a place for people to go on Sunday mornings for food and to hang out. Orthodoxy showed me what worship is, what it would be. I feel like I'm actually worshipping the Holy Trinity and I've seen improvements to my life and to my behaviors ever since.

Ye must be born again (John 3:3)! If you are not born again, nothing else matters! "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast" - Ephesians 2:8-9 KJV Salvation (i.e. being born again) is a one time event. Once you are saved, you are always saved. Heaven is guaranteed because you have received the free gift of salvation provided for you only through the shed blood of the Lord Jesus Christ on Calvary (Romans 3:24-26, Romans 6:23, John 1:12-13). If you are trusting in anything other than the blood of Jesus Christ to get you into Heaven (i.e. your good works, the Orthodox church or any other church, water baptism, sacraments, etc.), then you are not trusting fully in the blood of Jesus Christ by faith alone and you are not born again. "In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins" - Colossians 1:14 KJV "That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ. In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise" - Ephesians 1:12-13 KJV
💎THE GOSPEL OF THE WORD OF ALMIGHTY GOD "the last age in which God saves man from the destruction of this old world" (This may be a reminder for most people of God's words from Genesis: "Let us make man in our image, according to our likeness." Suppose God is saying that "let us" make man in "our " picture, then "ours" shows two or more; since He said "ours," then God is not only one. In this way, man begins to think generally of different persons, and from these words came the idea of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. At the time Moses wrote Genesis, was after the creation of mankind following the creation of the world. In the beginning, when the world, Moses did not exist yet. And it was a long time before Moses wrote the Bible, so how could he possibly know what God said in heaven? He was unaware of how God created the world. What is written in the Old Testament is the work of Jehovah, a phase of the work of God Himself for ushering in the Age of Law. This is the work of God, where as He spoke, it happened, and as He commanded, it remained. When all is said and done, whether it is the Father or the Son, They are one Spirit, not divided into separate persons. When man speaks of separate persons, does it not reflect God? Jehovah is the Spirit, and also a substance of Jesus. Doesn't the Spirit of God simply carry out the work of the Spirit from different perspectives?" Because of this, there is no distinction between persons.) Almighty God said This can be a REMINDER for most PEOPLE of GOD'S WORDS from GENESIS: "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness." Suppose GOD says "we" will CREATE MAN in "our" IMAGE, then "we" SHOWS TWO or MORE; since He SAID "we," then GOD is NOT one. IN THIS WAY, MAN BEGAN TO THINK GENERALLY OF DIFFERENT PERSONS, AND FROM THESE WORDS HAD THE IDEA OF THE FATHER, THE SON, AND THE HOLY SPIRIT. What then does the Father look like? What does the Son look like? And what does the Holy Spirit look like? ☀️🙏 Could it be that the present man was made in the image of the one who was put together from the three? Then is the image of man like that of the Father, the Son, or the Holy Spirit? 🙏 WHICH of the persons of GOD is the image of MAN? This idea of MAN is ABSOLUTELY WRONG and NONSENSE! It can only separate one God from several Gods. 🙏 AT THE TIME Moses WROTE GENESIS, it was AFTER MANKIND WAS CREATED AFTER THE CREATION OF THE WORLD. In the BEGINNING, when the WORLD began, Moses did NOT exist. And IT TOOK A LONG TIME FOR MOSES TO WRITE THE BIBLE, so HOW could he possibly KNOW WHAT GOD SAID in HEAVEN?🙏☀️ He is UNCONSCIOUS of HOW GOD CREATED THE WORLD. 🙏 In the OLD TESTAMENT of the Bible, there is NO mention of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, only the TRUE GOD, JEHOVAH, is PERFORMING His WORK in ISRAEL. ☀️ He is CALLED by different NAMES in the CHANGING TIMES, but this DOESN'T PROVE that each NAME REFERES to a different PERSON. Therefore, then wouldn't there be countless persons of God? What is WRITTEN in the OLD TESTAMENT is the WORK of JEHOVAH, A PHASE of the WORK of GOD HIMSELF for the START of the Age of Law. This is GOD'S WORK, where ACCORDING to what He SPOKE, it happened, and ACCORDING to what He commanded, it REMAINS. 🙏💐 AT NO TIME DID JEHOVAH SAY HE WAS THE FATHER WHO WOULD COME TO EFFECT THE WORK, or did He even foretell the coming of the Son to redeem mankind. WHEN IT CAME TO THE TIME OF JESUS, it was only mentioned that GOD became MAN to REDEEM ALL MANKIND, NOT that the SON CAME. ☀️ Because the times are not the same and the work that God Himself carries out is also different, He has to carry out His work within different kingdoms. In this way, the identity He represents is also different. PEOPLE BELIEVE JEHOVAH IS THE FATHER OF JESUS, but JESUS DOESN'T REALLY ACKNOWLEDGE, saying: "We were never identified as Father and Son; I and the Father in heaven are one. The Father is in Me and I am in the Father; when men see the Son, they see the Father in heaven." ☀️😪 When all is said and done, whether it is the Father or the Son, They are one Spirit, not divided into separate persons. By the time man attempts to explain, matters are complicated by the idea of different persons, as well as the relationship between Father, Son, and Spirit. WHEN MAN TALKS ABOUT separate persons, does it not reflect GOD? 🙏🔅 Man even ranks persons as first, second, and third; these are all mere human understandings, unworthy of reference, and utterly unreal! If you ask him: "How many are there in God?" He will say that God is the Trinity of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit: the one true God. If you ask him: "Who is the Father?" He will say: The Father is the Spirit of God in heaven; He rules over all, and He is the Lord of heaven." "Then is Jehovah the Spirit?" ☀️ He will say: "Yes!" If you ask him afterwards, "Who is the Son?" He will say that Jesus is the Son, anyway: "Then what is the story of Jesus? From whom did He come?" He will say: "Jesus was born of Mary through the shadowing of the Holy Spirit. " ☀️ "Then is not His substance also Spirit? Does His work also represent the Holy Spirit? Jehovah is the Spirit, and also a substance of Jesus. Now in the last days, it goes without saying that the Spirit still works; how did He become different persons? Doesn't the Spirit of God just carry out the work of the Spirit from different perspectives? Because of this, there is no difference between personas. 🙏 From "Is There a Trinity?" Fulfilled in "In the beginning He was the Word, the Word was with God, and the Word was God" (John 1:1). ... and "When I looked up, someone handed me a book wrapped in a scroll. I opened it and I read on both sides the prayers, lamentations, and curses." (Ezekiel 2:9-10). ... "His garment was stained with blood. He was called the "Word of God" (Rev. 19:13). I did a huge study on Christian history and denominations that eventually lead me to orthodoxy.

That would be a grand idea. Though we have lots of patristic conferences with the Orientals, and there are plenty of steles showing Nestorian/Assyrian influence as far as here in China, the Western Christians have no clue about any of this. A nice, distilled history lesson would be a good thing to see.

I’m an Englishman who grew up as Evangelical but very interested in Orthodoxy. Would some be able to explain in simple terms the main theological differences between Orthodoxy & Protestantism?
I'm not orthodox but I'd like to think I know a bit about it. -First and foremost is the position of the Bible, the orthodox views it as authoritative but not as the final or only authority as most Protestants view it. They view scripture as a part of Church tradition which is just as authoritative as other Church traditions. -The Orthodox allow for prayers of intercession to Mary and other Saints. This does not mean worship, but they believe that the saints can intercede and carry our prayers to God. This is largely rejected by most Protestants. -The Orthodox believe in apostolic succession, the idea that all of their clergy can be traced in an unbroken line back to the apostles. -The Orthodox teach that the bread and wine in communion is the true body and blood of Christ. Some Protestants do teach this as well, but most Evangelical protestants believe it is just a symbol. -Also Orthodoxy teaches salvation is not a "once saved always saved" like many Evangelicals believe. Salvation is a lifelong process and one can lose their salvation. This is a start but is something to think about!
@@JosephusAurelius I’m in the middle of converting to Orthodoxy myself, and should be made a catechumen soon. I also come from an evangelical background. Here are some differences/disagreements. Now I am new, and I would highly recommend talking to a priest. 1. Orthodoxy does not necessarily teach that works save. It’s more that good works are helpful. There is no simple answer so I would refer you to someone more learned than I. 2. While the Bible is inerrant, we do not believe that it is the sole source of teaching for the church. Holy tradition (which includes teachings of saints, the Bible, our oral tradition, the liturgy, and more) is the source for us. 3. We value monasticism greatly. 4. Salvation is not a one time thing (like evangelicals teach), it is a struggle. 5. Our services are drastically different. 6. We have holy water, icons, blessing, and more. I hope that helps. A book that was helpful to me was “Rock and Sand” by Archpriest Josiah Trenham. He compares the two thoroughly. God bless, and good luck if you pursue the church ☦️.
@@Kc40k I had been attending an Orthodox church for a while to investigate it. What finally pushed me over the edge and convinced me to join was the priest saying in a sermon, "We're saved by our faith, but we're judged by our works because our works show what we really believe."
It doesn’t make sense for evangelicals to convert to Eastern Orthodoxy. Eastern Orthodoxy preaches that everyone lives under a patriarchate. The Patriarch of the West is the Bishop of Rome, I.e. the Pope. Evangelicals (nearly all) are Western Christians, so they would belong to the Western Patriarchate, which is the Catholic Church
Joshua, Thanks for a beautifully done video on the EOC. I will mention, however, that many Orthodox Churches in America (particularly Greek and Antiochian) do use organs and a choir in their worship. Not sure where to make this suggestion, but I'd love to see one of your comparison videos with the Orthodox Church, the Anglican Church in North America, and the Charismatic Episcopal Church---all relatively conservative, liturgical churches with episcopal polities.
What is it you want to see? Which one is more apostate? They are all 100% apostate and all have nothing to do with the God nor Christianity of the Bible.
It'd be important to add that there's a novel ecclesiology held by the Ecumenical Patriarchate and its supporters, which teaches that the Archbishop of Constantinople is primus sine paribus (the first without equals) instead of primus inter paribus (first among equals). This new teaching, which has gained much support amongst the Greek churches and whose most prominent theological proponent is the Greek Orthodox Archbishop of America, Elpidophoros, holds that the Ecumenical Patriarch has the power to intervene in other churches' conflicts when he sees fit and is the only bishop with power to convene an Ecumenical Council. He is vested, according to this new teaching, with de facto authority over the whole Orthodox Church. Those who oppose Constantinople's new ecclesiology see it as some form of "neo-papism".
I just finished catechism classes with the Greek Orthodox Church in my area as a catechumen, and hadn’t heard of this teaching. Perhaps that teaching is among a minority of GOCs?
Constantinople is the New Rome not the second. So Moscow always will be the Third Rome. The Russian Churches should distinct politics from tradition. Get over it.
Considering that before the Great Schism the Christian Church consisted of five autonomous, equal and fraternal Churches: the Church of Alexandria, Jerusalem, Antioch, Constantinople and Rome, and after the Great Schism only four remained, without the Church of Rome which departed for the vain glory of this world, all four of which are now Orthodox Churches, we may say that the Catholics departed from among the Orthodox. Before the Great Schism, the Orthodox simply called themselves: Christians. Because the Catholics usurped the name Catholic, meaning universal, the remaining Christians had to differentiate themselves from the departed.
The word "Catholic" has derived from the Greek language, meaning universal. There should be one church. It should be called Christian (another Greek word meaning "The Anointed One"). Perhaps we could have a video on the schism of the church because it would speak volumes as to why this happened. It must be said, though, that the Orthodox church has remained true to the original teachings, never strayed. I am Eastern (Greek) Orthodox from Greece.
Nice synopsis considering the brevity. My personal convictions are aligned with the theology presented in the Book of Concord, but I do have great respect for the Othodox in regard to their ecclesiastical structure and the piety of their people. Another very impressive aspect of Orthodoxy is that they have taught us what it means to suffer and maintain their faith in Christ. This cannot be underestimated. Their faithfulness in the face of serious oppression, down through the centuries, is a great example to all.

@@mafia5355 We believe Christ's words literally when he said: "I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?" John 11 25-26 For us, those that have fallen asleep in the Lord are with Him waiting in anticipation for the second coming and the resurrection of the dead. Meanwhile though while they're there, they're still actively at work in prayer and worship to God. Hebrews 12 mentions us being surrounded by a cloud of witnesses and Revelation 5:8 mentions how "twenty-four elders" offered "golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayer of God's people." Furthermore it says in James 5:16 "Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working." It is important to understand what "pray" really means, its definition is to "request something in humble manner", "plea". So when we say we pray to the Saints we mean we are requesting them to pray for us to God, afterall who better than to request prayer from than someone in Christ's presence. I want to add that there is only ONE mediator between the Father and us, which is Jesus Christ, but we implore the Saints as a mediator to Christ, an example of this is when the Theotokos (Virgin Mary) interceded when the wine ran out at the wedding in Cana, and her son listened. We all worship God but we are a single flock, both those already asleep and those still on this earth. The ones already with Christ want nothing more than our salvation, for God is love and compassion, and they are in fervent prayer for our sakes. I hope this answered your question, if you have any more just let me know!
I used to be atheist until I saw a vision of the most Holy Theotokos (Mother of God). She was standing in a lotus flower and opened her arms to me. She was wearing a crown and a bright light shone behind her. Then I saw many flowers attached to one another. I began reading the Bible and converted to Christianity. Started off as a protestant/non-denominational but then I found orthodoxy. I will be baptised soon. I have been christian for about a year now. Orthodoxy is the way.
I think you misunderstand orthodoxy. Jesus is the only mediator, but the scriptures clearly reach that the prayers of a righteous person are efficacious. And that also the saints in heaven look down on us. If Jesus is the only mediator, why do you ask other people to pray for you (or pray for others). This is viewed as equivalent with the saints in heaven in orthodoxy. NOT that the saints somehow grant us prayers

According to many Orthodox theologians, there are more than seven sacraments. Sacraments aren't necessarily rigidly defined in the Orthodox Church beyond the seven you listed.
@@shadowbannedforspeakingtru1436 Actual Christianity, Orthodoxy, teaches in accordance with the bible that there are mysteries. In the Orthodox Church, the term "mysteries" is used generally, "sacraments" being the latin translation of "mystery." The Bible itself mentions the same word: "Let a man so account of us, as of the ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God." - 1 Corinthians 4:1 This is exactly how we view clergy, stewards of the mysteries. Christ also repeatedly works miracles through material things (mud for the blind man, water, loaves and fish, etc), so this is only continuous with this. I don't see how some religion that came into existence 1500 years after the fact is "actual Christianity." Even amongst protestants it is only the radical reformation that denied the mysteries; Lutherans and Anglicans did not change this.

Of all the Christian denominations the Orthodox Church is the most accurate in explaining the teachings and suffering of Christ. It prepares you for eternal life, and welcomes the second coming of Christ whole heartedly. As the name suggests, it stands straight and tall among other religions. The word “Ortho” meaning upright and straight. The word “Doxa” meaning opinion. The Orthodox religion believes that some of the teachings of the Catholic and Protestant churches are wrong.
The irony is that the Roman Catholics claim to have come first, stating that Peter was the first pope. And the RCC were the first to appeal to traditions not mentioned anywhere in the scriptures. Then the Eastern Orthodox came along later and made all the same claims as the RCC... minus the papacy of course. LOL
@kevinmiller6443 that's not how any of it happened. First of all, all of the churches (the 4 that make up the EOC and the church in Rome) have been around aince pentacost. None of them can be said to have "come first." When the RCC or EOC make that claim, what they are really talling about is which one of them deviated from the central tenets of the faith. The sticking point for both of them is Papal Supremacy, of course. The earliest Christians appealed to tradition instead of scripture. That's because at first, there was no scripture beyond the OT. Which books should be used in addition to the OT was itself a matter of tradition. God didn't leave a guide to which books were divinely inspired; the Church had to decide that. (Scripture is therefore a tradition unto itself, so it really makes no sense to speak of "using scripture" vs "using tradition," any more than it makes sense to say "I will use my car, but not an automobile.")
Wrong. There is no infant baptism in the Bible, no priesthood and no worship of Mary -who did NOT remain a virgin, by the way, and the Bible is the ONLY authority, not the writings or teachings of ‘church fathers’ and Jesus is the ONLY mediator between God and man.
Communion is also restricted to church members who are in good standing, which will vary from parish to parish. Also, I have found that many Russian Orthodox Churches will require a recent confession before you can take Communion.
Sounds like the cub scouts. Sounds like they high jacked the teachings of the Lord to build a works based religion. One that can and has been used to exploit people who are earnestly seeking the Lord.

The only detail I would correct is the use of the word 'sacrament'. When I was at seminary the word 'mystery' was preferred because of the need to partake of, to share, in understanding the true meaning of the 'activity'. So, we partake of holy mysteries to understand their meaning.
“Lots of liturgy” lol. That’s an understatement. Whenever my boys ask me how long church is going to be? I always reply with the same response: “not long enough”.
Go to an Egyptian Easter service. I attended it with the community in Beijing one Christmas, and my legs almost cracked from almost 6 hours of standing. But the liturgy was fine, and the food and company were just as glorious.
@@paulkersey7458 lol, yeah... 20 mins... An hour... , I have no concept of time during liturgy. Sometimes time moves really slowly. Sometimes it seems to move really rapidly. 🤷♂️ I tell my kids that the liturgy is almost done every time they ask. I don't think they like that... 😬
Many Orthodox teach that there are seven sacraments, but it isn’t a dogmatic, clear-cut number. I believe some lists go as high as twenty, and the whole practice of counting them is more influenced by having conversations with those who make a point of counting them rather than something that we did on our own. Sacraments are viewed as actions or events by which man experiences the grace of God. Being that we believe God’s grace is him working in the world, that would give almost everything the potential to be a sacrament.
Jesus gave authority to the apostles And later they gave it to others people I'm not saying that the bible is not important If it wasn't for the orthodox church We won't have the canon of scripture
@@fenderlespaul5781 they may have written it down but GOD gave the scripture. He gave it by divine inspiration to fallible men who fasted, prayed, sought God so that their writings were accurate. No discrepancies in over 6,000 Greek manuscripts. Why does the Catholic Church and Orthodox think they can change things around or add to the Holy Word of God. They are all fallible, too.
I don't know what they put in oil used for Chrismation, but smell so good and give me goose bumps all the time. It doesn't smell like something common. According to Wikipedia it has 40 ingredients. I don't mind, that thing smells really nice and is pleasant to the skin.
Nice recap. The only correction is that the Eastern Orthodox church doesn't always have 49 OT books, we have between 46-50 depending on which church tradition's Bible you have. I believe the old Slavonic Bible has the most old testament books in it. Unlike Catholicism and Protestantism there isn't a strict old testament canon that all EO churches must follow or else.
I believe the Georgians have the largest canon, as they are the only ones who include 4th Maccabees. At least amongst the eastern Orthodox, if you include the oriental Orthodox, it's the Ethiopians by a considerable margin.
@@costakeith9048 I didn't know the Georgians included 4th Maccabees. I was told by someone at our church that the old Slavonic bibles have 4th Maccabees. I've never actually read a Slavonic bible so I took his word for it.

Good video. A bit of a clarification: although there are seven *New Testament* sacraments that are recognized as special, the upper shelf of the sacramental life if you will, there ultimately is no fixed number of sacraments in the Orthodox Church because every aspect of life in Christ, life filled by the divine grace of the Holy Spirit, is sacramental.
For for the westerners, the Orthodox Church is what the Roman-Catholic Church used to be before the great schism. For the orientals, the Orthodox Church is what their churches supposed to be if they didn't fell off in the first centuries.

Excellent presentation as usual. I think you could be doing as much if not more than any Pope, Patriarch, Bishop, Priest, Pastor or Minister to further interdenominational tolerance ever and that’s a great and good thing. You got the details of Orthodoxy correct may I offer some information on its essence stemming from The Apostles and Pentecost. The foundation of the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church has three legs, Tradition, Ritual and Scripture. All three were provided equally by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Consider this, St. Paul spent at least 18 months in Thessaloniki and wrote two relatively short letters, Epistles, to the Thessalonians. Now do you think the Thessalonians got the completeness of St. Paul’s ministry from the Epistles or from the 18 months of nearly continuous face to face instruction on not only what it means to, but also how to, be a Christian. Fr. Josiah Trenham has a story of visiting a Church in Thessaloniki where he noticed the “Kathedra” or Bishops Throne or the Chair of St. Paul was roped off with an Icon of St Paul sitting on it. Fr. Josiah asked doesn’t your Bishop use this Chair when he visits? The reply was no that’s St. Paul’s Chair. Fr, Josiah said yes but doesn’t your Bishop use it? Fr. Josiah was confused because he has a similar Chair called the same thing, sitting in the same place back in his Church in Riverside Ca. but what took him a moment to grasp was that the Chair he was asking about in this Church was the one actually used by the Apostle of Christ himself, St. Paul. The Thessalonians have, the Scripture, the Tradition, the Ritual and apparently the furniture of St. Paul. Could it possibly be remotely feasible that St. Paul was only with the Holly Spirit when writing what was to become Scripture and completely absent in all those months in Thessaloniki and years elsewhere. The full true Church given by God through his Apostles is best represented by Orthodoxy. So says a Mormon raised, Roman Catholic educated, Orthodox Christian of the Greek variety.
SS,....Furthering false churches and heresy is not a good thing, it is an abomination. Orthodoxy, catholicism has nothing to do with the Bibles Christianity. It is all another gospel. The false manmade gospel and christianity of the accursed.
@@shadowbannedforspeakingtru1436 You are not being clear. Are you saying that Orthodox Christianity is false be cause it’s man made? If you think that then the Bible itself is false because it is also “man made” as it was compiled by the same men who established the Ritual and Traditions of the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church, they are in fact inextricably linked. The Tradition actually predates the Bible by at least 170 years when a Bishop and Church Father named Irenaeus did the heavy lifting of determining “True” Text from “Heretical” text in the second Century in the Roman City, now Leon France. If you can’t believe Irenaeus was inspired by the Holly Spirit the best argument you have on the Word of God is that what he and other Church fathers provided is incomplete at best because there were countless other manuscripts and collections of writing that are not in the Bible precisely because of their work. Having any confidence in Biblical Truth requires the understanding that it is the product of the Holy Spirit’s inspiration on men, the same mean in many circumstances that through their equally Inspired and commanded by Christ ministries gave us the complete Church that includes Word, Ritual and Tradition. There is no way to reasonably suppose that First and second Century Apostles were wrong and that their errors survived until Martin Luther and Calvin miraculously revealed the errors using the Book that they created after what 14 or 15 centuries. Also you can’t equate Roman Catholicism with Eastern or Oriental Orthodoxy’s, they are not any more similar than the Reformed Churches are to the Roman Catholic Church. Christ is Born, Glorify Him!
Pretty good. Just a few corrections...1) Not all Orthodox churches are in communion with each other. 2) We don't have a set number of sacraments. There are at least seven. And 3) Not all churches do services are done in the language of the people. For example, Russian services are not done in Russian. (They're in a related language called Church Slavonic.)
@BeyondZeke All sacraments are holy. That's what the word means. Certainly, we recognize that seven of them are especially important to us (although it's highly unlikely to experience them all). My point was that it is not as defined canonically as it is in the Roman Catholic church.
I'd appreciate help and correction in my biased thinking. It appears to me that the Orthodox church is the one Jesus left us and said that gates of hell will no prevail against. Catholic church is a contender, but given that it appears to have succumbed to pride of their bishop wanting to be supreme. Protestants continue on with the same pride by claiming that a book can interpret itself. Since it clearly cannot, as only people can interpret the book, there are so many denominations. There are many more reasons that all align, but these appear to me easily seen and logically focused on claims that we can test. I like this as it echoes Saint Paul's words in 1 Corinthians 15:14: _ if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith._ This gives us, Christians, a testable, factual, historical claim that we can inspect to see if it is true. In the same manner, it looks to me like the Orthodox church goes back to the time of the apostles. They continue to teach, inspired by the way apostles thought them. They are keeping the tradition and their teaching alive. Catholics changed as they depend on a single bishop, a single person to be not merely supreme, but also infallible. This idea of infallibility logically flows from their belief that their bishop is supreme. Protestants continue with the idea that a single person can be supreme and can interpret the bible properly. As they all disagree, hence all the many denominations. I hope I've written my position clearly. What am I blind to? What am I not seeing properly? Thank you for reading and have a nice day.
You very much correct. The egocentrism of the Pope in Papism has become the egocentrism of every individual in Protestantism. That's why the West suffers from all these denominations.
As far as I understand it, Protestants generally don't consider all other denominations to be apostate. So the difference between all the denominations boils down to preference or conscience. Catholics and Orthodox see all other churches as apostate, so they see the large number of denominations as a problem.
@@Svetty00 I think all three churches see each other as apostate- Protestants, Catholics and Orthodox. It isn't rare to hear some protestants compare Catholics to antichrist or say that they're evil. I believe that Orthodox are spared the same rhetoric only due to smaller size of the church. And this too makes sense. All three churches, broadly speaking, insist on the same thing- Jesus is God- that is truth and love embodied. This is why we all put supreme importance on truth and we follow the church that we do. We think that our church is true and right. If we didn't, we would join another church or make a new denomination in the case of the protestants. Truth is exclusive by its very nature. If A is true, then B must necessarily be false. This is simple logic. We all preach that devil is the deceiver and liar, so it isn't rocket science to see why we all call each other as false teachers and apostates. I do believe that truth is supremely important and I tried to be as careful as I can when picking a church to join. I believe this is case for all who take God seriously. Still, we differ in the churches we pick. As limited, sinful and fallen people, it seems necessary that we will differ. This is why while I picked the Orthodox Church, I still enjoy listening to both Catholic and Protestant preachers. There are so many good ones. Bishop Barron on the Catholic side and I love Tim Keller, Mike Winger and John MacArthur, just to name a few. If anyone is interested, I couldn't recommend Jonathan Pageau strongly enough. Not because he is Orthodox, but because he is a deep thinker that see the world symbolically. It's a unique way to help us see the world properly.
You forgot to mention that the Orthodox Church is the Church that Jesus founded before returning to the Father in Heaven. We trace our history back to the Apostles. No Protestant can make that claim. ☦️🙏🏻
What is the church that Christ founded? The one that follows his teachings and examples. So no praying to the dead, for the dead, relying on works, venerating idols, statues and icons etc
Saints aren't dead Salvation is justification by faith that works in love not by faith alone By works faith is made perfect because faith without works is dead Idol are images of false gods Icons are images of real people And We don't worship them
To be mentioned that, at the Great Schism, Orthodoxy remained unchanged and Catholicism changed some original things about Christianity. Therefore, Orthodoxy is the only one having no changes in doctrine
There is more than one difference as to what the Catholics believe that the Orthodox do not: Immaculate conception of Mary, Filioque, purgatory, and more
occasionally they are allowed. But generally they were associated strongly with pagan worship, and the focus of the music is to convey the meaning of the words. this is why early church music was often chanted and lacking in complex harmony. more of a practical reason, really. it's not really a core doctrine or anything
about the sacraments: there is no set number. It's actually unknown, bc everything in the Orthodox view is a sacrament. Burial is a sacrament, blessing the home is a sacrament etc etc.

Hey could any Orthodox brothers clear up a potential misconception, is it true that different sects (Russia, Poland, etc ) have varying views on if non-orthodox baptisms are valid, or if weekly reconciliation is a requirement for the eucharist?
There is no dogma on non-orthodox baptisms so it depends on your local bishop and their discretion. Commonly I noticed that Russian church's are more likely to do corrective baptisms. You have to understand the church politics to understand why some do and others don't Constantinople is a ecumenicalist church and wants unification of all church's therefore they accept baptisms of the heterodox. Russia dislikes ecumenism and only sees orthodox baptisms as valid.
The first time I attended an Orthodox liturgy was in 1979. At that time, confession was required every time before taking communion, at least in the parish I visited. Only two people actually received communion there that day. I was told that most people there only took communion about four times a year. I started getting serious about Orthodoxy around 2004, if memory serves me correctly. At that time, nearly everybody in the congregation took communion every Sunday--and they didn't go to confession all that often. This was in two different parishes in two different dioceses. Nowadays it seems like the priests expect people to go to confession maybe four times a year, but to receive communion weekly. Every priest I've gone to for confession acts as if it's an annoyance to him. I suppose if they were Catholic priests, they might accuse me of scrupulosity. None of the pastors I've been familiar with held regular hours for confession, so you must beg them to fit it into their schedule. The only time I've ever seen a period of time set apart for the hearing of confessions is on Lazarus Saturday (i.e., the day before Palm Sunday), when they will hear confessions for a few hours AFTER liturgy. This is in preparation for the holy anointing administered on Holy Wednesday. I knew one priest who would hear confessions (if necessary) AFTER liturgy on Sundays, but he encouraged the penitents to receive communion during liturgy--and then confess their sins afterwards. He called it "taking communion on credit."
No the non Orthodox baptism is not valid in any Orthodox Church. The rule if you decide to become Orthodox is that you have to be baptized again the Orthodox way, unless you were a Papist then you need to do Chrismation again and sign a paper that you reject Papism. That's is valid also for Constantinople...

Ye must be born again (John 3:3)! If you are not born again, nothing else matters!
"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast" - Ephesians 2:8-9 KJV
Salvation (i.e. being born again) is a one time event.
"In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins" - Colossians 1:14 KJV
"That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ. In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise" - Ephesians 1:12-13 KJV
💎THE GOSPEL OF THE WORD OF ALMIGHTY GOD "the last age in which God saves man from the destruction of this old world"
(This may be a reminder for most people of God's words from Genesis: "Let us make man in our image, according to our likeness." Suppose God is saying that "let us" make man in "our " picture, then "ours" shows two or more; since He said "ours," then God is not only one. Doesn't the Spirit of God simply carry out the work of the Spirit from different perspectives?" Because of this, there is no distinction between persons.)
Almighty God said
This can be a REMINDER for most PEOPLE of GOD'S WORDS from GENESIS: "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness." Suppose GOD says "we" will CREATE MAN in "our" IMAGE, then "we" SHOWS TWO or MORE; since He SAID "we," then GOD is NOT one. ☀️🙏
Could it be that the present man was made in the image of the one who was put together from the three? Then is the image of man like that of the Father, the Son, or the Holy Spirit? 🙏
WHICH of the persons of GOD is the image of MAN? This idea of MAN is ABSOLUTELY WRONG and NONSENSE! It can only separate one God from several Gods. 🙏
AT THE TIME Moses WROTE GENESIS, it was AFTER MANKIND WAS CREATED AFTER THE CREATION OF THE WORLD. In the BEGINNING, when the WORLD began, Moses did NOT exist. And IT TOOK A LONG TIME FOR MOSES TO WRITE THE BIBLE, so HOW could he possibly KNOW WHAT GOD SAID in HEAVEN?🙏☀️
He is UNCONSCIOUS of HOW GOD CREATED THE WORLD. 🙏
In the OLD TESTAMENT of the Bible, there is NO mention of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, only the TRUE GOD, JEHOVAH, is PERFORMING His WORK in ISRAEL. ☀️
He is CALLED by different NAMES in the CHANGING TIMES, but this DOESN'T PROVE that each NAME REFERES to a different PERSON. 🙏💐
AT NO TIME DID JEHOVAH SAY HE WAS THE FATHER WHO WOULD COME TO EFFECT THE WORK, or did He even foretell the coming of the Son to redeem mankind. WHEN IT CAME TO THE TIME OF JESUS, it was only mentioned that GOD became MAN to REDEEM ALL MANKIND, NOT that the SON CAME. ☀️
Because the times are not the same and the work that God Himself carries out is also different, He has to carry out His work within different kingdoms. The Father is in Me and I am in the Father; when men see the Son, they see the Father in heaven." ☀️😪
When all is said and done, whether it is the Father or the Son, They are one Spirit, not divided into separate persons. By the time man attempts to explain, matters are complicated by the idea of different persons, as well as the relationship between Father, Son, and Spirit. WHEN MAN TALKS ABOUT separate persons, does it not reflect GOD? 🙏🔅
Man even ranks persons as first, second, and third; these are all mere human understandings, unworthy of reference, and utterly unreal! If you ask him: "How many are there in God?" He will say that God is the Trinity of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit: the one true God. If you ask him: "Who is the Father?" He will say: The Father is the Spirit of God in heaven; He rules over all, and He is the Lord of heaven." "Then is Jehovah the Spirit?" ☀️
He will say: "Yes!" If you ask him afterwards, "Who is the Son?" He will say that Jesus is the Son, anyway: "Then what is the story of Jesus? From whom did He come?" He will say: "Jesus was born of Mary through the shadowing of the Holy Spirit. " ☀️
"Then is not His substance also Spirit? Does His work also represent the Holy Spirit?
Jehovah is the Spirit, and also a substance of Jesus. Now in the last days, it goes without saying that the Spirit still works; how did He become different persons? Doesn't the Spirit of God just carry out the work of the Spirit from different perspectives? Because of this, there is no difference between personas. 🙏

A good overview of a very complex and rich in tradition Eastern Orthodox Church Xristos Anesti Happy Greek Easter!
@@richardjones6024 Interesting, thank you. This does make me more lenient towards Orthodoxy

Because it is!
I just finished catechism classes with the Greek Orthodox Church in my area as a catechumen, and hadn’t heard of this teaching. Perhaps that teaching is among a minority of GOCs?
That's Russian propaganda, keep it up
Anyone can look for Metropolitan Elpidophoro’s own article about it.
Very well explained, thank you. Many people are confused by the word "catholic" as it is being used in the Creed ....
Many Orthodox Churches in America used to be calied the Greek Catholic Church.
This Primitive Church that existed was the Orthodox, after the Schism of 1054 they simply had to call it the Orthodox Church

For us, those that have fallen asleep in the Lord are with Him waiting in anticipation for the second coming and the resurrection of the dead. Meanwhile though while they're there, they're still actively at work in prayer and worship to God. Hebrews 12 mentions us being surrounded by a cloud of witnesses and Revelation 5:8 mentions how "twenty-four elders" offered "golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayer of God's people."
Furthermore it says in James 5:16 "Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working."
It is important to understand what "pray" really means, its definition is to "request something in humble manner", "plea".

According to many Orthodox theologians, there are more than seven sacraments. Sacraments aren't necessarily rigidly defined in the Orthodox Church beyond the seven you listed.
M76,....According to the Bible and to actual Christianity there are no sacraments.
@@shadowbannedforspeakingtru1436 Actual Christianity, Orthodoxy, teaches in accordance with the bible that there are mysteries. In the Orthodox Church, the term "mysteries" is used generally, "sacraments" being the latin translation of "mystery."
The Bible itself mentions the same word:
"Let a man so account of us, as of the ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God." - 1 Corinthians 4:1
This is exactly how we view clergy, stewards of the mysteries. Christ also repeatedly works miracles through material things (mud for the blind man, water, loaves and fish, etc), so this is only continuous with this.
Orthodoxy is not a denomination. Only Protestants have denominations.
Wrong. There is no infant baptism in the Bible, no priesthood and no worship of Mary -who did NOT remain a virgin, by the way, and the Bible is the ONLY authority, not the writings or teachings of ‘church fathers’ and Jesus is the ONLY mediator between God and man.
great succinct overview!

Thank you.
May you be well.

That pretty much sums it up for the time allotted. Great job. OCA,
Excellent presentation as usual.

There are seven holy sacraments there are more but 7 main sacraments
@BeyondZeke All sacraments are holy. That's what the word means. Certainly, we recognize that seven of them are especially important to us (although it's highly unlikely to experience them all). My point was that it is not as defined canonically as it is in the Roman Catholic church.

How dare you disgrace our religion with that pfp and name 🤦🏻
I watched this because I am going to Cyprus in a couple of months and the Orthodox Church is the largest church in Cyprus.
I like this as it echoes Saint Paul's words in 1 Corinthians 15:14:
_ if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith._
This gives us, Christians, a testable, factual, historical claim that we can inspect to see if it is true.
You are correct. That thought was what started my looking into Orthodoxy, and I do not regret it.
Amen

occasionally they are allowed. In 1904, the Holy Synod concluded that such parishes were possible and provided a list of doctrinal corrections to the Book of Common Prayer's text of the prayers and rites that were necessary to profess in Orthodox worship.
You have to understand the church politics to understand why some do and others don't
Constantinople is a ecumenicalist church and wants unification of all church's therefore they accept baptisms of the heterodox.
@@bigscarysteve I'm sorry that was your expirience. I believe Catholic parishes need to be more serious about Confession broadly(even though I see no reason for weekly confession to be REQUIRED. Acquisitions of scrupulosity absolutely hold back the church from dispensing grace. God bless

To all who need the truth: let nothing separate you from the Love of Jesus Christ. What you get as a member of an orthodox church is a stage production and little else. And a very impressive one at that especially during HOLY WEEK or many other high holidays. These services tend to inspire those who allow themselves to be wrapped up in the combination of incense and chanting and the unique liturgy -ritual combo you can't find anywhere else. But just as you attend an opera ,its the same here, you must know something about what you're observing or it won't make sense.
And the icing on the cake are the hymns and mesmerizing ikons which will forever haunt you. But never be fooled amigo, all this can do nothing to save your soul. nothing. This can become an emotional experience but not enough to bring you to the Lord Jesus who is the living WORD OF GOD. Man lives by every word out of the mouth of God and not by weekly rituals. Once the orthodox services end and you're out in the clear fresh air ,the spell is broken; its back to things as usual. The 1054 schism was not actually that significant at the time and not the definitive moment that the churches separated. Constantinople, Antioch, Jerusalem and Alexandria were never happy with the Roman archbishop adopting filioque to appease the Arian Christians. Iconoclast emperors very much soured relations with Rome, but after iconoclasm was defeated relations with Constantinople continued. The definitive moment of their separation was actually the fourth Crusade and the partitioning of Rhomania (Byzantine Empire (basically territory of modern Greece)) among Latin and Frankish nobles. The presence of Latin clergy in Rhomania usurping parishes from Byzantine clergy is what truly created the rift.
