like how everyone was justcreaming "IT'S THE DARKEST OF DARKEST" but then I watched it and honestly it just felt uplifting and wholesome with the darkness just further boosting the positivity.
I fucking love how the community has banded together to prevent spoilers by using the classic youtube clickbait tactics. Angel hare keeps the wholesome nature of the characters' relation and actually hides a dark and interesting story within it.
It’s dark if you’ve never experienced the darkness it deals with, if you’ve never had friends or family in that situation it’s a dark piece of media. But if you have been through something like this, then the show takes on an air of comfort and safety, despite the dark themes.
Consodering the VHS themes, and the presence of a firearm in the home, as well as the father's abusive nature, I'd more than believe Jonah's father being a police officer.
As an American who grew up in the 90s. Where we would often use v. H. S tapes to record things and even record over things. TV shows wedding events. What have you? It wasn't uncommon with this type of art style in this type of cartoon in this type of cartoon and this timeline for any home to have at least one small firearm. I was surprised when my Grandma passed away to find one and She even had receipts of having a service every year like She sent it off to get it Clean. Ed, make sure it would still fire and what misfire and all of that. She didn't have real bullets, but she did have blanks. That will still shoot in fire and cancel.Cause damage is shot close enough. But their scary enough to scare people off. It's not uncommon for people to have guns in the United States and there are more gunlaws now than there were in the 90s. And especially in the 90s where it feels like this kind of cartoon comes from or at least this type of art style. It wasn't uncommon to just go buy a gun off. A friend or off someone you knew people didn't register. Things or really care all that much. Sure, there were registries, but. It's not like even if there were laws in certain areas. Not like you would actually be held to those laws.Kind of like it's illegal to speed. But how many people do you know have sped? How many times and gotten away with it?Kind of a thing.People just don't care unless it causes a problem
@@davismorgan99 Where did you get the statistic on your last point? I just read a PEW Research document on this and no where is this cited. Is it made up, or have you read it somewhere?
That's such a good analysis it deserves a lot more attention! With so many people only talking about how "spooky" this series is, it's good to have a video taking a proper deep dive into everything and I really like your theories
Thank you so much! I love spooky content, but a lot of videos have definitely overexaggerated how dark the series is and seem to ignore the other elements that make it so compelling.
The third show that loading that Gabby and zagg are looking at is simply a camera live streaming some real life location. Jonah is rigging it so that they can enter reality.
30:15 "Demon Hare Boxes" is likely a reference to early in television history when TVs were called "devil boxes", as new technology often gets scaremongered and linked to the devil or demons.
Your explanation of the games and stories very calm and wonderful, but I don't want to be annoying, so I will say it only once. Keep going, you are the best.
Oh my gosh!! This is such a good and underrated interpretation of the series! I love Angel Hare and recently discovered it, and wanted to watch some more videos, and I can say that is is definitely the best one out of the ones I've watched! Keep it up!! ❤❤
I thought vincin was the one to betray gabby after the easter special since he kept drawing eggs with devil symbols. Its a wholesome change that there wasnt any betrayal or horror
What I'd hope if they do a 3rd season is learning more about Wreath of Lyfe since we could have some explanations on how they made the characters become alive and one of the first things Zag ask Jonah when he forces him to speak up is asking him if he's fron Wreath. I'm curious if he was just confused on how somebody else understood that he's alive or if we should be concerned about Wreath for some reason 🤔
Amazing analysis piece. You won a new fan. I really like Angel Hare and you touched on many aspects I missed even after a couple watch throughs. I like to say they managed to paint with a colorful array of grays. It’s refreshingly not outright evil, a subtlety rarely found in similar media, and provokes thought and discussion. On a separate note I appreciate your presentation and mature approach to the media. Not sensationalistic, and clearly conveys points in a professional manner. Thank you.
man this was really well researched and helped me understand it better. Well to be fair I watched Angel Hare high so I didn't really understand it until this
I for one would love to see a West Patch episode here, I've never even heard of it and this is far from the first Angel Hare video essay I've watched, I've not even heard it mentioned before!
I believe the episodes of West Patch were removed before Angel Hare became really popular, but its such a fascinating concept! I definitely want to make a video just about the series!
First video of yours that I'm watching. Really in depth and easy to follow. I didn't feel creeped out by Angel Hare though. I've heard people saying its intense and scary AF. But it just seems like a representation of biblical characters. told in a really sad story. But I enjoyed it. Great job!
I know most people are taking the wholesome route with this analog series however, with all the references to demons disguising themselves as angels and the pictures shown by francis during the Q&A segment were of demons depicted as rabbits. Nahhhh something darker is afoot and I don’t think it’s all just wholesome👀I trust nothing
I'm not sure it makes sense to connect the letters segment to Francis' behavior in the Easter episode, since the Easter episode was a recording from Jonah's childhood but the letters segments happen in the present day (for instance, the first one in season 2 includes Gabby's disappearance and Zag's presence, which only happen because of Jonah's present day actions).
Ooo you make a great point, which honestly has me thinking a lot about these bonus tapes now lol. When making this video, I assumed the first two bonus tapes were past recordings because Gabby's hand is present in the intro for both (Gabby herself appearing in the second) and there are static lines on the second tape, making me think it's an older recording. The tapes titled "Bonus Cases" seemed to be from the present day with Gabby's hand now missing and the references to her disappearance and Zag's presence. We have the real-time commenters on the channel as "letter writers" every time, but the Mangan sisters did say that they weren't trying to make a fully immersive ARG because it would just be too difficult for them to stick with. So I'm now wondering if the bonus tapes are considered canon to the series timeline and if the letter writers indicate the present day or if they're mainly just a fun way to have the audience involved. I'd love to know your thoughts!
East Patch released a plushie of her awhile back! I think they're working on a kickstarter soon that will feature a Gabby and Zag plushie as well as other cool products!
I learned alot from your references, gonna try and keep em in mind. Epic video! God bless and stay pawsome ^^ (also had no idea about the tiktoc vids, wow)
I like the subplot that the angels need to heal as much as the humans do. They got hurt. They watched fellow beings they cared deeply about betray them. The war messed them up and left lasting trauma.
When i first watched angel hare i was 100% convinced that Francis was the reason Gabby disappeared since she kept ignoring him, she was breaking rules of the show and she was kinda mean to him (essp after the easter egg show)... I was actually confused at the end when he didn't end up being the bad guy and had to re-watch it
What if Wreath of Life (Lyfe?) was Wreath of Faith back when Zagg's show was aired (Since his show seems so much older than Gabby's) but due to backlash (Like why would a Christian show creator make a film noir series with guns, possibly murders, ect?) so they had to change name, maybe is why Zagg's show was cancelled? (I have a feeling it was cancelled but I might be wrong on that). Anyways, good video!
I just watched it and... I don't understand what horror or scary people talk about. It has a few points where you are scared for the characters wellbeing, but nothing really stands out as anything bad. The worst part was Francis painting satanic signs on the easter eggs lol
For sure, some people don't find it scary, and that's okay :). Some actually find it uplifting and hopeful, especially if they or someone they love has been in Jonah's situation. Media is art and art will always be subjective, unique to each person and their experiences 💜
What I personally think about how Jonah's father was killed, is that the show paints it as if it doesn't matter anymore. Because he's already gone, he cannot hurt Jonah anymore. As such, uncovering the trauma can have a positive effect on the person, but in Jonah's case it just seems to me that he went more into the general view and not into the specifics, which did land him a positive ending to his questions even though there are things left unanswered. Depending on the person, it might be best. Terrible things happened in the past, but that was long ago and it shouldn't be able to affect Jonah's life right now. I also don't think that Gabby wiped out Jonah's memories of him, what I think happened is a case of PTSD and disassociative amnesia, unless I missed something.
Another thing that supports my point of view is the usage of horror in the series. When we're talking about uncovering trauma, there is ofc the glitchy vhs tapes, but most of all it bases itself on horror through implication, the implication of the father's death and his abusive behavior towards his son. As soon as Jonah meets Angel Gabby again, it almost feels as if the series completely dunked the horror aspect out of the window. Because it doesn't need it anymore. The Zag part in the second season felt more like comedy.
I really enjoyed reading your take on the series and can absolutely see what you mean! The horror aspect was putting yourself in Jonah's shoes as a child, allowing yourself to speculate and feel what he felt during those traumatic times. Jonah's ability to make peace with the unknown in the end depicts his growth and transition from someone who was most likely afraid every day to no longer holding onto that fear. Loved your analysis!
What I think is that Angel Hare isn't horror at all and to call it that is an insult, it's actually a wholesome and touching tale about a two people who were there for each other. Horror? The FANAF movie was scarier then this. The only thing remotely horrific is when it vaguely implies the possibility that Gabby might have killed Jonah's abusive father. Personally I think what happened is that Gabby learned about the internet because of Jonah's live streaming and thought she could use it like a tv broadcast to help more children then before, not realizing how different or bigger it was to tv. As to why Jonah's wearing a Wreath of Life hat, I'd say it's obvious that WoL is really some kind of angelic organization and Jonah has joined it to help Gabby and Zag help adapt what they do to a new medium.
Thanks for sharing your opinions 😊 East Patch did win Best Horror at Stareable Fest and do market Angel Hare as horror, but it’s always interesting to see a fresh perspective on the series.
Ooo interesting theory! Are you referring to the fallen watchers in the Book of Enoch and the Book of Giants (as I understand it, there are both benevolent and malevolent watchers)? I believe they were punished and imprisoned underground until judgement day, but it would be really interesting if some managed to escape. I'd love to hear more about your thoughts on it all, especially angels not knowing right and wrong! I'm really curious, as I thought that Lucifer chose to sin and rebel against God and other angels chose to follow. It's all very fascinating and such a vast topic!
Angel Hare gives me the creeps because it is "too good to be true" and it becomes eerie and creepy af in many parts of the story. The entire time I was like "this is not okay". It gave me anxiety because it hints at something way darker, yet it remains unseen and unresolved. I hope later on something unnerving is revealed because otherwise the story is being creepy about the wrong things, and for no real reason. Like, this could have been a wholesome, yet serious, story, without the unnecessary eeriness, the unessesary foreshadowing of things that never came to be. Idk. It just feels wrong for it to be so wholesome when they insinuate and suggest so much more evil....

It's definitely a one-of-a-kind analog series
That’s definitely not the way I was looking at it, but now that’s actually a pretty wholesome way to go about it, i agree with that too.
Yes
I don't believe it was meant to be scary, I think it was supposed to be an eye opener for the things that happened in the world.
I can absolutely see that! The scariest parts were definitely real-world situations with Gabby's presence being more uplifting and hopeful.
Yes
i think that is what makes it the darkest. it is such a real world thing
It’s dark if you’ve never experienced the darkness it deals with, if you’ve never had friends or family in that situation it’s a dark piece of media. But if you have been through something like this, then the show takes on an air of comfort and safety, despite the dark themes.
I believe you’re right - it comes down to how closely one can empathize with Jonah
You bring up a really good point, this was more comforting than scary but I know others feel different.
OH YEAH BROTHER
Rather than being 'cursed', you could say that Angel Hare is *blessed*
Consodering the VHS themes, and the presence of a firearm in the home, as well as the father's abusive nature, I'd more than believe Jonah's father being a police officer.
I never thought of that! I could definitely see it though!
That’s a good thought. Also, it’s not uncommon for men in the US to own firearms. ESPECIALLY men who have a history of being abusive.
