They really nailed the voice acting, it genuinely sounds exactly like those old edutainment game's narrator, in terms of cadence and also just how it literally sounds.
I've not heard of Angel Hare before this, I'll have to look into it. I honestly love that bait and switch. I've seen so much horror at this point, I was fully prepared for this to become a bloodbath at any moment. I like that it maintained a slight air of unsettling, the feeling that things are just nearly as they should be but you know it's not perfect. They absolutely nailed a proper edutainment feel too, I'm reminded of some very early childhood memories in computer class.
I would say you could even compare this game with Super Mario 64, except being its fangames and personalized copy videos of Wario Apparition and other creepy stuff.
Yeah, I agree Angel Hare's Learning Adventure is not a "horror" game that we expect but I think it does its job very well and different from most analog/digital horror games/videos we are used to.
I read a bit on the Angel Hare webseries (planning to watch it in full later). Short synopsis: Angel Hare was a generic edutainment program, but the version Jonah watched was altered by "his" Gabby to address Jonah's home life and try to help him. So I wondered what was "altered" about this game. Normally, the demon hares would probably be a functioning whack-a-mole minigame. But here, the story is changed so that a friend tells Jonah to do something and to keep it their little secret. Jonah feels guilty and ashamed about it ("CHEATER"). Gabby says "I understand why you're lying to protect him, but we need to confront this situation." oh. Oh no.
Considering the story hidden behind it of what was happening when he was younger. Very big oh no. If you think of him lying about something being him lying about his situation at home instead.

I don't know why, but it's absolutely hilarious to me that I've just sat down and watched a grown man play an education game, and was wincing wondering just when the horror would kick in. Love the content Manly! Keep it up ^w^
I’m pleasantly surprised this wasn’t straight up a horror game. It’s spooky not gonna lie and I like that it creeps you out a bit until the very end. I also like how much it resembles an actual game a Christian would make too.
The voice acting was something I wasn't prepared for, it's absolutely phenomenal. Sounds exactly like what these games did. Also the midi(?) sounding soundtrack. This is super good.
I was fearing the worst, knowing how so many modern horror stories like to start with a false sense of security and childlike innocence before suddenly shifting to jumpscares and devil worship, so that twist at the end took me by surprise and motivated me to look up more about the source. And while I'm not religious, I think our world could really use more of this kind of "Wholesome Horror" where the unfathomable beings we can barely comprehend are looking out for us, and the true terror comes from the everyday trauma they're protecting us from.
This is exactly how I felt about Angel Hare, you put it so well in a way I couldn't pin down. It's like the inverse of cosmic horror that way, and I'd also love to see more like it.
I could swear Francis was being voiced by Flaw Peacock. He uses this particular voice in his deep dive series of Faith: The Unholy Trinity when voicing Gary Miller's letters and dialogue. "And remember, Gary loves you."
Angel gabby: *looking like shes about to kill francis* "this is for your own good, francis" also angel gabby: *very light comedic bonk* "i hope thats a valuable lesson for you both" manly: francis has been murdered. Hes dead.
U know, the game is so innocent cuz the original series was innocent too, but it doesnt make it worse! I adore this game, truly represents the vibes of the series
OH I ACTUALLY KNOW THE SERIES THIS IS BASED ON! It's so cool to see more of it! I heard of it *after* it had finished, so I zoomed through the episodes, and that caused it to seem very short, so I appreciate the extra content. It was a cool series with a very sweet ending, and the tension was very natural.
Um, when the mallet goes over Francis in the 'minigame' portion, his sprite briefly changes. I didn't watch past the credits, so idk if you answered whether you tried bonking him yourself, but if you haven't why don't you try? He did say "the demon rabbits aren't as obvious as rabbits with horns" after all ;)
I know it wouldn't work for the gimmick, but I genuinely would like more of these edutainment games that are subtly touching on topics real edutainment games would never tackle, but also still never completely breaking out of the final limits of the genre.
I know this is kinda weird to point out and I know it was probably only done for the sake of sticking with the original Biblical spelling, but can I just say how very refreshing it is to see someone actually acknowledge that Gabriel is a unisex name instead of feeling the need to force a tacky "elle/ella" at the end just because the character is a girl? Maybe I'm biased because I have the same name and have dealt with people (both accidentally and intentionally) misgendering me or spelling my name wrong my whole life, but it's just nice to see another female Gabriel for once lmao
Despite having no actual gore or body horror, I enjoyed this. I was half expecting this to be like one of those JumpStart PC games I'm sure a lot of us played as kids, and was gonna get more dark and scary as it went along.
While this is probably not my thing, I love how well made it is and how it really makes you feel like your playing an edutainment game down to even having a part where you have to sign your name. As someone who really loved edutainment games when I was a kid to now, this was a treat to take in! 💕🌸 Good work to them, I hope they make even more amazing work! Glad that more people will hopefully get to enjoy it!
I'm down to seeing more games like this. "Horror" games that likely spooks children more than adults. Honestly if I was a kid and saw that Francis about to get punished that would freak me out a bit. Because when I was a kid getting into trouble was scary enough.
Now that I've caught up on the series this is based on, I will say that the presence of Zag here is a little unnerving? He's, to put it as unspoilery as possible, not native to Angel Hare's world, so the fact that he can migrate to other (in-universe) Angel Hare merchandise... how deep does this literal and metaphorical rabbit hole go?
I absolutely love the Angel Hare web series. It's SO good. The production is great, the story is FANTASTIC, and it's just incredibly well put together. It definitely is more wholesome than horror but it shows that not everything dark and serious has to, as Manly put it, be a bloodbath. I highly recommend it for anyone who has a lot of nostalgia for those learning games. To keep it short: I also have a LOT of religious trauma and there were some bits that kinda set that off but by the end the story had such good payoff that I didn't mind some of the more religious connotations so if that puts anyone off in the beginning I'd suggest trying to get around that.
Oh cool, heard about this series a while back, more wholesome horror than anything but its well worth the effort put in. This game reminds me more of the old "learning House" edutainment series (Sheila Rae the Brave, Harry's Haunted House, etc..) in its style so they nailed that part down.
Okay, gonna rewatch this after falling down the rabbit hole of *both* The East and West Patch channels and recapping myself, and needless to say, I have the feeling I'll see this all in a much different light now. Thanks, Manly, for introducing these guys to me!
I still remember playing one of the Casper edutainment games multiple times, that one stuck in my mind. The one that still comes back to me often, I don't remember the name of it, but I remember it was about playing various minigames in order to collect parts to rebuild a rocket ship on an alien planet (or maybe a moon or asteroid), not sure if it was edutainment or just a children's game. Thanks for the nostalgia trip, JonahBadassCheater!
@@speedydoggo Not quite, I did come across that in my search though. The game I'm thinking of had a couple of pretty sweet 3D-rendered cutscenes if I remember correctly. I remember seeing it on one of the retro archive channels on youtube and I had it saved, but I can't find it in my favorites playlists since I don't remember what the title of the video contained.
The best theory I can come up with is that Jonah is dead, and we're playing on a computer that holds his soul. The hot air balloon is symbolic for releasing the soul from the game. But I still wanna know what happens when YOU bonk Francis with the hammer.
If you haven't watched it since this comment, you really ought to check out the webseries this game's based on. "Wholesome horror" is really the best way to put it, using all the trappings of analog horror for a story that's really touching in the end.

@@brianeagan8628 well neither did Francis but we see how that went
I don't know why, but it's absolutely hilarious to me that I've just sat down and watched a grown man play an education game, and was wincing wondering just when the horror would kick in.
Love the content Manly! Keep it up ^w^
We all got our expectations subverted, didn’t we?
I’m pleasantly surprised this wasn’t straight up a horror game. It’s spooky not gonna lie and I like that it creeps you out a bit until the very end.
I also like how much it resembles an actual game a Christian would make too.
The voice acting was something I wasn't prepared for, it's absolutely phenomenal. Sounds exactly like what these games did. Also the midi(?) sounding soundtrack. This is super good.
Yeah, the music and voice acting are REALLY good.
I like the art style and how it's not the stereotypic spoopypasta type
I could swear Francis was being voiced by Flaw Peacock. He uses this particular voice in his deep dive series of Faith: The Unholy Trinity when voicing Gary Miller's letters and dialogue. "And remember, Gary loves you."
Angel gabby: *looking like shes about to kill francis* "this is for your own good, francis"
also angel gabby: *very light comedic bonk* "i hope thats a valuable lesson for you both"
manly: francis has been murdered. Hes dead.
The real horror was me thinking all the time "she's so wholesome, please don't let something bad happen to her"
U know, the game is so innocent cuz the original series was innocent too, but it doesnt make it worse!
I adore this game, truly represents the vibes of the series
Wonder if Manly grew up with the Jump Start games like I did.
Those and the Cap’n Crunch CD game were my childhood!
Manly and Angel Hare? This is a good day.
Glad that this has finally got the attention it deserves
Finally Angel Hare is becoming more popular!
Sorry for doing this late reply but.
Here where i live, we ad ela to the femini versions of male names, like gabriela.
Honestly the fact it doesn't go full blown horror kinda disturbs me more. It feels like the game is hiding something more.
I love the take they have on Archangel Gabriel; she's usually portrayed as a male (for obvious reasons) But in the bible, she's referenced as she/her
I remember watching the original analog horror of this. Neat series very underrated
I remember the VHS videos of this! I'm so glad more content was made of Angel Hare :)
The voice acter did a great job
This is the most wholesome analog horror series I’ve seen tbh
Despite having no actual gore or body horror, I enjoyed this. I was half expecting this to be like one of those JumpStart PC games I'm sure a lot of us played as kids, and was gonna get more dark and scary as it went along.
“Look how much you’ve grown”. It hurts so much to think that’s what she wanted the most. For Jonah to grow. To have the chance to.
Right? 🥲
This came so far out the left field even the demon hares got lost.
While this is probably not my thing, I love how well made it is and how it really makes you feel like your playing an edutainment game down to even having a part where you have to sign your name. As someone who really loved edutainment games when I was a kid to now, this was a treat to take in! 💕🌸
Good work to them, I hope they make even more amazing work! Glad that more people will hopefully get to enjoy it!
OH! I know this unfiction series! It’s one of my favorites because of how comforting it is
I'm down to seeing more games like this. "Horror" games that likely spooks children more than adults. Honestly if I was a kid and saw that Francis about to get punished that would freak me out a bit. Because when I was a kid getting into trouble was scary enough.
8:55 You earned it fair and square. Francis was the one that changed the game lol
This game reminds me more of the old "learning House" edutainment series (Sheila Rae the Brave, Harry's Haunted House, etc..) in its style so they nailed that part down.
thanks for introducing me to this webseries! it's a really refreshing take on analog stuff.
"Absolutely nothing will go wrong"
- Nothing went wrong
How can this be?
The song, the opening soundtrack nearly made me cry
Then I went to check out the Web series, and now I wont stop bawling
Damn, thanks Manly
Okay, gonna rewatch this after falling down the rabbit hole of *both* The East and West Patch channels and recapping myself, and needless to say, I have the feeling I'll see this all in a much different light now. Thanks, Manly, for introducing these guys to me!
I just finished watching the video series after watching the play through. OMG, it makes sense after you watch it. And the series is currently ongoing
Huh, and my whole life I thought FNAF was an education game of not going into the dark
I LIKE THE ARTSTYLE SM OHMG
Wow, great to see a big youtuber I follow shine some light on this little series!
Honestly this was just really calming and pleasant.
That was the friendliest Horror Game i ever saw at you Channel
I still remember playing one of the Casper edutainment games multiple times, that one stuck in my mind. The one that still comes back to me often, I don't remember the name of it, but I remember it was about playing various minigames in order to collect parts to rebuild a rocket ship on an alien planet (or maybe a moon or asteroid), not sure if it was edutainment or just a children's game.
Thanks for the nostalgia trip, JonahBadassCheater!
Sounds like Putt Putt goes to the Moon? Similar plots, at least
THEY MADE IT A GAME??? WOOOW
Manly thank you man. I love Angel Hare and this was a total surprise.
If you havent please watch the Angel Hare series!
this game was so artfully done
This was the scariest video on the channel good lord.
Angel Hare is to haunted media. What My Friendly Neighborhood is to the monster animatronics.
They nailed the old computer game vibe 100 percent! I played a tonnnn of those as a kid c:
Holy shit I loved this ARG, I can't believe it's a game now.
My favourite educational game was the jump start series x3, man I miss those.
I love the Angel Hare analog series. I didn't know there's a game
Inner demons, and frankie got bonked, there can only be one type of inner demon that requires the BONK
This is a game of the Angel Hare video series on youtube, and the protagonist is named Jonah and that's why Gabby calls you that
Omg the music and the graphics! As someone who played quite a number of computer edutainment games, this was quite nostalgic!
For some reason I’m reminded of all dogs go to heaven?
Once i heard the name gabriel and jonah i was like “yeah this is a christian horror game isnt it..”
Let me guess.
Mandela catalogue?
@@AngelCat748 yup
This game is actually part of a nonfiction arg aswell by the same name. They even did livestreams for it too. This was made with the second season.
Sort of. It's kind of like a twist on the "haunted/cursed children's show."
@@andromeda_va39 except the entity haunting said children's show is actually very nice.
I had no idea that angel hare had a game
Reminds me of the storybook cdrom games but less animated
I expected this to be a horror game disguised as a wholesome kids’ old school PC game, but it wasn’t! 😮
I also love how to me the style nails the look of the jumpstart games.
I remember finding this series, Gabby especially through unorthodox means
from a certain e621???
AY YOOOOOO
