    Point of mediation is not to get comfortable with the situation outside but to get comfortable with yourself within. Meditation programs do not let children get comfortable with injustice but helps be at ease with the situation, this doesn't mean you accept the situation but you remain at ease and refrain from being disturbed by whats happening outside. Students become more mentally equipped to face situations that are unjust through meditation. And if these programs facilitate that its better to support them..

      Lego Insomniac Teaching children mindfulness and suggesting it as something helpful isn't forcing ideas. It's more alike to telling a kid to study. It's good for them but that doesn't mean they'll do it cause you tell them to.

    • @MrCorky911

      Yeah they do and they must stop. Schools should exclusively focus on imparting objective knowledge and for practical purposes to test said knowledge. It's okay if a teacher gives his opinion and encourages his students to do something but don't force them (like having meditation time at school and keeping them at school even longer) as this video seems to be suggesting

    • @sunstream4
      @sunstream4 7 лет назад +17

      Corky I don't think school should be made longer for meditation. However, mindfulness is helpful knowledge. Many kids are never taught how to deal with stress or how to express emotion in a healthy way. When you don't know those things, you can end up developing anxiety, depression or other behavioural and mental issues. If they teach you how to keep your body healthy in Health and Phys. Ed, they should teach you how to keep your mind healthy as well.

  • @MrJethroha

    What a dumb criticism of meditation. So what, the cure to segregation and racial inequality is to encourage stress and anxiety? More mentally well off kids are only going to be better at defeating their problems and advancing their community - being mentally at peace doesn't mean being unambitious, if anything it'll makes your ambitions more plausible to achieve.

    It is incredible how many people despite the immense amount of research and evidence that exists in this regard, showing its multiple benefits, not in being passive, but in developing executive functions, reducing fear and anxiety, improving alert levels and develop a sense of compassion, they still say it's false and useless; Our society is deeply ill, they just like to constantly escape from reality, anything that leads them to face that reality seems negative and absurd to them; I applaud and deeply appreciate all those who take these great mindfulness techniques to schools, universities, recreational places, or any other place where there are people.

  • @Tullece

    Meditation turns you into a passive pushover? That's a new one.
    People always find a problem with anything I suppose. If anything, meditation helps you keep your cool in stressful situations to avoid unnecessary conflict. Should conflict still arise and you feel the need to protect yourself, guess what? You'll be able to keep a better level of calmness during that too.
    Meditation =/= Passivity.
    Mediation = Calmness.

    The elementary school that I went to did something similar putting a large group of kids on the floor on mats and turned the lights low and attempted to teach kids relaxation methods.
    Due to these 'classes' I have been able to relax any point of my body to relieve pain or to simply fall asleep when my brain won't let me.
    I am so very grateful to those teachers of my youth who took the time to teach me what was thought at the time to be a rather oddball skill that I never knew I was going to desperately need as an adult.

    My old art teacher used to offer a meditation period everyday during the first ten minutes of class. You weren't forced to (which I think is a good thing) but you did have to be quiet and respectful of others who wanted to. It really helped me through my first year of high school and still all these years later, I always slow down and take a breath when something gets too stressful or frustrating.

    Ok now that is impressive, thats what meditation is, not pushing out your thoughts but meditation is to observe the mind closely. Its something to take rather seriously. "To understand myself is to understand another, through that understanding comes love".
    This isn't to achieve something, but to discover. May I point out, meditation doesn't need to be on your schedule. It can be done whenever, wherever, in whichever position, meditation is clearing your mind of clutter and ultimately fears.
    Eckhart Tolle, Jiddu Krishnamurti, Alan Watts. These are some people that you could say "live in mediation". Meditation is just but a word, a word that has been used and abused by the gurus and salesmen alike. That being said, when people go 'seeking' to find answers they get reeled in by some leech.
    _"We are sick with fascination for the useful tools of names and numbers, of symbols, signs, conceptions and ideas. Meditation is therefore the art of suspending verbal and symbolic thinking for a time, somewhat as a courteous audience will stop talking when a concert is about to begin."_ *-Alan Watts*
    _"If I use the word 'freedom', you have your own idea of what freedom is, or should be, or ought to be. So when you hear that word 'freedom' you have already created an image, already a symbol, a conclusion. And the speaker may have a totally different kind of meaning, so communication becomes impossible."_ *-Jiddu Krishnamurti*

    I think this is great. Is good to have something that can help kids deal with everyday stresses. When you think about it, it's a time to do what you feel will help relax you, help you become more stable in stressful situations, etc., and you can call it whatever makes sense to you - meditation, prayer, reflection - it's all good. If it can make a difference in how someone would react or response in a given situation, which can be the difference between life and death in some circumstances, is always a good thing.

    Everyone should know how to meditate, and thinking it makes one passive is a complete misunderstanding of what it is. It is an incredibly important skill for people to have to deal with life. Buddhist meditation practices jive precisely with cognitive behavioral therapy and dialectical behavior therapy techniques. It grows parts of your brain through use- meditation is exercise for your brain to stay in shape- focused, happy, peaceful, compassionate.

    David Forbes’ criticism is asinine. For many of my students, our meditation practice is one of very few times they are not being bombarded by chaos. When I go a week without a class practice, they complain and tell me they need it. I brought this practice to them because it helped me through cancer, not because they’re mostly students of color. I’m not teaching them to be robots; I’m teaching them to be boisterous, proud scholars who also make time for self-reflection. Every decision in education comes down to a simple question: is it good for our kids? With meditation, the answer is a resounding yes.

    I found it was alot easier to think about my breathing, how the air filled my lungs, my chest rising and falling, and what it felt like when the air left my lungs. You're less likely to have intrusive thoughts if you occupy your mind with something else.

    One friend was telling me about how this as a replacement for detention works because on one hand, you'll have kids who actually put in the effort and get something out of it, and on the other, you'll have the kids who think it's stupid, but just hate having to sit still for long periods of time (and thus won't want to come back to "detention-meditation").

    Hold up, how did racial segregation get clumped into this topic??? That was out of the blue???
    And how is there re-segregation? That implies active intent to separate groups. Unless someone's got information for me about intentional systemic re-segregation policies I'd argue the issue is due to class and financial.
    That's not to say it's not affecting black communities more than others, because it clearly is, but its not because of active direct forces targeting race, but rather financial/class and cultural forces combined with the repercussions of past systemic racial segregation.
    But again, why did that subject just get casually injected into meditation?

    I know meditation as focusing on one thing deeply instead of many things shallowly. Koans, mantras, katas, counting, hearing -- just different focal points. Interesting how people's experiences differ.

    I have experienced this because when I was in third grade we would do yoga every morning for 30 to 45 minutes everyday, and I would feel better I also had a hard time with spelling and I progressively got better as we did more yoga so I'm kind of keen on this Idea😊

    Meditation is not absolute. As many science people would say, causation isn't correlation. There can be other factors. Maybe the fact that we are always working or surrounded by interacting people leads to higher stress. I see nothing wrong with meditation spiritually in a basic level but i don't want it to be mandatory.

    When in the public school I went to they give you a little over a min for moment of silence and saying to "meditate, pray, or any other silent activity" so it's been here for years in the elementary it's like 10-15 secs bc kids are hyper and can't keep quiet but intermediate and middle school up is 1min or longer
