      As a teacher, kids are stupid. You just listened to Chewie and Fuckface explaining idiots that were in the wrong and just could not understand. The kid who is "just defending himself" is often an asshole too. There was a girl-fight once and I grabbed the strong one carrying her back. The other, stupider girl, kept charging her while I was holding her attacker back. The stupid girl kept running into the fists of the girl I was holding. She lost a fight to a girl I was holding. Do you understand how stupid that is?

      A cat sometimes gets into a mood and starts clawing your arm, like when you rub its belly. Painful, but cute. Now apply that mood to something the size of a motorcycle.
      People forget that housecats are considered apex predators and disastrous to a lot of ecosystems they're introduced to. They will straight up murder anything they can find, or try to.

    • @tbotalpha8133
      @tbotalpha8133 3 года назад +3

      Actually the difference is that house cats and "big" cats belong to different subfamilies - Felinae and Pantherinae. Felinae contains housecats and wildcats, but also cheetahs and cougars. Pantherinae contains lions, tigers, leopards and jaguars. One of the biggest differences between the Felidae subfamilies is whether a species can roar or purr. Felinae species can purr, but not roar. Pantherinae species can roar, but not purr.
      Also cheetahs are apparently quite docile in captivity. They're not really built for attacking large and strong animals, and they never naturally hunt humans. They tend to behave almost like oversized wildcats around us.

    I appreciate Pat bring up that myth about bullies. My working theory ever since I learned that most bullies actually have healthy or inflated self-esteem has been that they genuinely believe they’re allowed to act the way that they do. That, to me at least, also explains why some bullies are indignant when someone finally fights back or they get reprimanded. Also, I adore the “You get one,” policy at a spiritual level especially because it would be so rarely invoked. Think about it: most teachers would think, “But what if next year there’s a worse kid in my class? I can’t waste my one glory kill on the kid that won’t stop making spitballs in class.”

    • @PredictableEnigma
      @PredictableEnigma 3 года назад +16

      Sure, SOMETIMES they have a rough homelife and only know how to interact with others via violence so become bullies. But more often I find bullys are someone who has never been told no and thinks they are immune to consequences and deserve everything. Also plenty of those with a rough homelife develop this skittish and defeatist mindset which makes them more likely to be targeted as vitcims of bullies than to be the bullies themselves (though it can go either way)

    The best anti-bully tech I've ever seen was from my Spanish teacher in high school. This was around the late 00's, so this was around the time, well, when school shootings seemed to be on the news all the time. She and our class got into a little discussion about the shootings and she just goes "Yeah, if you're bullying anyone, please cut it out. Let's not get on the news."
    Was as simple as that.

If the teacher does it the bully knows that kind of behavior won't fly at school even if their parents allow it at home; if the kid being antagonized does it then they'll teach the bully that they're not to be fucked with and maybe the antagonist will even have enough respect for the protagonist to want to befriend them even though that sounds like something straight out of an anime.

    My favorite example is one that has been banned from the Darwin Awards for being just too common. "William Telling" where someone puts an object on their head, and an other person / people try to shoot it off.
    The absolute best example of this being the geniuses who decided to do this with a shotgun. A shotgun loaded with shot instead of slugs.
    At least with slugs your misses are misses and you have a chance of hitting the object if your aim is true. With shot you are basically grabbing a fistful of gravel and throwing it - so if your aim is true, you are also tearing new holes in your friend's face, and if your aim is anything but wildly off the mark, you are tearing new holes somewhere else in your friend.

    So fun story, my elementary school had a super cool male 7th grade teacher that almost everyone loved. He was very chill, easy to talk to, and probably walked the dangerous line of "teacher who is so cool they lose all authority". The guy had a great reputation until one day he was just gone. No one in the faculty would talk about it, but I had a friend in the class that said they were doing an outdoor gym class session and during a game of soccer he had suddenly tackled one of the kids to the ground and throttled the shit out of the kid's neck. No one was seriously hurt, the kid who got throttled said he did nothing to bring it on, and after losing his job the teacher eventually had students visit him to see how he was doing and he seemed alright.
    To this day it remains a total mystery as to what happened, but I'll always think of that "one".

    I don't know the statistics offhand, but as someone who studied psychology (though not as a major), was a bully (very briefly), was relentlessly bullied (for years afterward), and now teaches bullies, a lot more of them grow out of it than you might think. A lot of them, at the very least, do have the potential to be perfectly decent people and rather than being horribly abused, are just very poorly socialized and hate being in class and / or school. By the end of high school the vast majority of them mellow out dramatically, at least compared to what they were before. If I'm being honest with myself, even I can recall that the people who were the worst to me were pretty much ok when I saw them years later; we might have even been able to become friends if I didn't still hold a massive grudge at the time.
    That being said, there have been times I wished I had my "one," but it wasn't for any of the bullies; it was actually for a bullied kid who has serious autism and mental health issues, is horribly disruptive, and had stalked me on numerous occasions. I've never really come close to blows though, aside from a tongue lashing or two to let off steam.

      i made two good friends in junior high by clocking them.
      i was on the shorter side, the first guy was not. i'm standing on a bench in the hall, waiting for the gym teacher with my class, looking at the grad photos of past classes (my great-uncle went to that school, i was looking for him), and this guy dragged me backwards off the bench and slammed me into the wall. so i punched him in the face, at the exact moment the teacher came around the corner. of course, we both got blamed for it, and we were friends for the next 3 years.
      the other guy (2 years after the first one) was pissing around during a foods class while i was cooking some meat. gas stoves, hot meat and metal, jackass bouncing around me trying to get a rise out of me, what could go wrong? twig of a guy too, my height but 2/3rds my weight kinda thing. so, i very calmly turned around, punched him in the chest hard enough to knock him backwards into the fridge in the little kitchenette we were in, and went back to what i was doing. he never tried it again and we were friends for a couple of years after.
      generally, violence is not the solution, but my life has taught me that sometimes, you need to beat a lesson into someone. tool of last resort, of course, but when you have tried diplomacy and threats, smacking them is still on the table.

    Back in my days, corporal punishment by caning was a thing, and doesn't stop bullies. Pat's right; Most of the time(which will be 99%), bullies are usually the ones with the inflated, confident view of themselves, and think they can stomp on anyone because they can. Sure, we have the ones from "tragic" upbringings, but does that matter to the kid being beaten?
    It's easy for people to say we have to be understand and be sympathetic to the bully's side when some of these people either never gone thru that hell getting bullied or were the bullies themselves. Get over yourselves.

    A story on one of the formative childhood events of my life. I remember I was on a field trip back in school. There was this one kid Niall who was such a fucking bully and he would do it to everyone. Our teacher at the time (who I won't name) was the most placid man possible, didn't have an ounce of anger in him. I remember a few weeks before trip his daughter died in a car accident or something. He'd still come in to work but he seemed off. The trip rolls round, since we're a small class he's the only member of staff with help from a parent who volunteered to come along. Niall is throwing shit at people on our bus, hitting the other kids but mainly targeting the one who's mum came with because she was as placid as our teacher and he thought he could get away with it. 2 hour bus trip ends with everyone wanting to kill Niall, we make our way to this old castle ground by the coast. Niall starts making jokes about the teachers daughter. We're the only group in this little walled off area, so teach grabs Niall by his shoulders, slams him against a wall, holds him there 2 feet off the air and screams in his face like a fucking titan. Both teacher and Niall don't say a word for the entire day and Niall looks pale and shaken.
    I'm guessing no one said anything because the guy kept his job. All I know is Niall never laid a finger on anyone for the rest of school.

    Oh you hit one of my pet peeves.
    poisonous = I bite it. I die
    Venomous = It bites me. I die

    • @Samael1113
      @Samael1113 4 года назад +3

      not exactly if you want to be pedantic.
      Venomous typically means it has to be injected typically on purpose... hit the bloodstream kind of thing. A bite probably being most common, but Lionfish use quills / spines, and Jellyfish use really small hair-like stingers that shoot out when the tendril is touched, and bees have barbed "tails".
      Poisonous is a more general term and refers to a potentially life-threatening response to exposure. Frequently ingestion, but there are plants that produce saps or other substances that cause massive reactions from touch or inhalation. as well as ingestion.

    When i was in the 6th grade is was bullied heavily by two kids. The teacher at the time would completely enable these two by excusing their behavior or out right ignoring it. The first bully brought a gun to school in the 7th grade and was expelled. He is currently doing serving prison time for armed robbery of a jewelry store. The second bully about a year before graduating high school tired to rape a girl at gunpoint but she managed to slip the gun away and shot him in the leg. The victim reported the incident to the police so when tried receiving treatment at the emergency room he was arrested. He is currently serving prison time as well. I guess life caught up to them in the end.

    Teacher walks up to the bully:
    "...." "You know I haven't cashed in mine yet Cody... and you have ranked above on my list since last year. Let this be the first and final warning, because if I catch you bullying once again, Im not telling you when I'll snap and I'll just go for it.... Anyway, we'll begin the class now."

    I was bullied relentlessly in middle school because I was already going through puberty and called me "cavewoman". They also called me "demented" and "weirdo".
    The whole group that picked on me was really fucking into making me cry. They stole my things, pulled at my hair, and just kept verbally making fun of me.
    The way it stopped REALLY still makes me feel bad because I did NOT intend for that mess to go down. REALLY did not expect that huge range of ISS and detentions.
