I'm keeping off 'Friends' or I'll never leave but I saw this when I stopped by yesterday and I HAD to see this one too, because even though it's not my favourite Jim Carrey movie, it's one that has been the most profound for me personally (although Eternal Sunshine and The Truman Show is up there too). I really do love how they portrayed God in this movie (very relatable and FUN!). I always found it funny how God, even in Biblical movies is presented as overly righteous, but if you believe God created us, then all that humour/ personality had to come from that same source right? So I've always appreciated Morgan Freeman's interpretation. In terms of the nobility and divine power...I'd say I'm more spiritual now, so I don't personally believe God would judge how we would use that divine power (but I won't go down that rabbit hole haha)...and I don't think Morgan Freeman as God judged Bruce in this film either. For me, Bruce using divine powers for personal gain vs God is not really a fair comparison. Bruce was using the powers of God from a human perspective. Bruce could hear all the prayers but he was still stressed and Bruce said YES to everyone winning the lottery but then everybody won less. If God is infinite abundance there would be more than enough for everyone right? The way I take it is, humans perceive lack because we see reality as something tangible, which is why Bruce's perception was still limited despite the powers and why he used the powers to right the wrongs in his life. I don't see that as selfish but something most of us would do if we were honest with ourselves because when you see through human eyes you'll always see limitation. God/ the Divine does not perceive or know lack which is why Morgan Freeman is always chill in the movie compared to Bruce. That's why God freely gives because God is whole. Bruce's first instinct was to "take" because he didn't see himself as whole despite the powers. In one of Jennifer Lopez's movie there was this one quote: "I call you God because you see everything and you still smile" - Yes we associate the limitless powers with God but I think it's really that being-ness/ that wholeness that people look up to God for...Basically love....That love and wholeness is actually what Bruce was trying to "get" with the promotion and material things. I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting material things but if we're made of both spirit (intangible) and flesh (tangible), then the material cannot substitute for love. That's why I do like the message of the film with Grace's unconditional love for Bruce and the idea of "Be the Miracle" because love is in all of us. As Morgan Freeman "God" said, everyone keeps looking up. Anyway, super fun reaction and it's always cool hearing your thoughts on these "deeper" films, Thor!
