Fun Fact: the producers and director said that the dog that played Milo was one of the most talented and intelligent dog actors they’ve ever seen. The scene where he’s trying to get the keys from the guard Milo took them carefully without being told to do so, it was almost like he knew he wasn’t supposed to wake up the guard

The Mask is a Dark Horse comic, and he's actually rated R, the character has the same powers as Bugs Bunny and Roger Rabbit. It's called Toon Force, He can alter reality however he wants, as long as he finds it funny. He's actually a very brutal sociopath character but was watered down for the movie.

What I most like about this film is when you sit down and examine it, it is almost _exactly_ the same theme as the original novel Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde... Henry Jekyll and Stanley Ipkiss both were kind and good men who were thought well of by everyone around them, but with urges and desires they buried deep and refused to act on, Ipkiss out of timidity, Jekyll out of terror of reprisal for his monstrous urges. And both kept those sides of themselves totally repressed permanently. Then, one day... both of them discover a way to safely take the 'mask' of 'pure kindliness' off in a way they had nothing to fear from doing.
Jekyll discovered his potion, which did nothing but change his face, there was never an evil alternate personality in the book. Always it was Jekyll, in full control of his actions, 'hiding' behind another identity. By taking the potion he was actually taking off his mask... the true horror of the story is that any person you know or meet on the street could be a Jekyll, being kind, being nice, being acceptable... but actually thoroughly vile inside and only waiting for an opportunity to indulge without consequence... and you would _never, ever know them for what they really were_ even if you knew them closely for _decades_ just like Mr. Utterson did Jekyll since you can never truly know someone's heart unless you are them yourself.
Ipkiss found the mask, which made him feel unafraid of anything and protected him from all consequences both social and physical and gave him to power to do whatever he wanted.... but even wearing the mask it was _always_ Ipkiss and only Ipkiss in control of his actions... just not in control of _himself._ The mask didn't change who he was, like the potion didn't for Jekyll. It just let him stop hiding who he was. By putting on the mask he was actually taking his mask off, which is what Ben Stein is in the movie to point out. Ipkiss' whole journey in the film is him learning to do exactly what Ben Stein's character told him he _needed_ to do; _Be both himself, and the Mask._ Strike that delicate balance between self-control and self-assertion that he had always been lacking in and was making his life miserable and causing him problems either way, Mask or no. Not wearing the Mask caused him life problems, but wearing it, while giving him the ability to deal with problems caused him more and _worsening_ life problems. He had by the end of the film rejected both extremes, total self-repression and total self-expression and met somewhere in the middle between them. Which is why he threw the Mask away. He no longer needed it as a crutch, and was no longer the timid little man who found it, and was at balance and ready to handle life as it came entirely on his own confidence.
I love comparing these two stories for the poignant points they make, and often a mental exercise I do myself is to sit and ask myself: "If I managed to find The Mask and put it on... how is it _I_ would act while wearing it?" and I feel like it is an excellent modern koan to meditate on if you're trying to work out who you are and examine and understand your own identity.

Absolutely. It was truly a comedy for everyone. The Mask was silly and referenced older cartoons that children of the time would have been at least passively familiar with, if not fond of. But they didn't dumb down the story for kids so they also wrote good jokes that weren't super dirty.

    A couple of tidbits:
The film's closing scene, takes place on the real-life (former) Sixth Street Bridge, an iconic Los Angeles landmark. (I'm glad they selected it for the closing scene). About 5 years ago, the bridge was demolished for structural reasons, and the new Sixth Street Bridge constructed in its place (two rows of ten concrete arches).
    ••••
The credits in the film say, "and introducing Cameron Diaz" - making this her film debut.
    ••••
One of the differences between The Mask personas of Stanley Ipkiss and Dorian: Stanley's Mask character can warp his •surroundings•, including nearby people: He instantly conjures up any props he might need to execute his inner Looney Tunes gags (the alarm clock and mallet, the chain, boards and nails to hammer the gates shut...) ...and his ability to bend passersby to his will, turning them into human props (the police dancing to 'Cuban Pete', etc.) He's like a Charles Xavier on Steroids, "...I had the power to control people's minds - to make them think or do whatever I wanted." It's hard to think of any other character who can transform his local environment, including people, to that degree. (the closest example, is Dr. Manhattan from 'The Watchmen' - not only a wildly different film, but he doesn't uses his powers in anything approaching the same way.)

One thing I've come to love about this movie as I've gotten older, besides, you know, Cameron Diaz in general, is the switch up of the trustworthy female characters. Typically with these types of stories, the "bombshell" character (Tina) is selfish, evil, and untrustworthy, and the "average girl" (Peggy) is kind, sweet, and cares about the main character, but in this one, Tina's the one that's actually trustworthy, sure she was reconning the bank for Dorian, but does anyone believe she actually had a say in the matter? Peggy, however, turns out to be selfish and sells Stanley out the instant she can profit from it.

The cliche story where the guy ends up with the plain sweet girl, who he didn't notice at first, instead of the bombshell is some morality lesson bullshit and I have always loved how this movie stayed away from that. Also the fact that the guys were drooling over how hot she was is something I miss from the 90's when it was just funny and people wouldn't get all butthurt and offended over it.
Then again the movie was based on a rather gruesome comic so it was already toned down a lot for the movie.
I still have hope we get out of this "everything is offensive" phase and that we can go back to growing backbones and taking a joke... this type of humor made movies so much funnier.

The scene with cannibal corpse on Pet Detective you mentioned something like “that’s me when I’m off camera” Nice to know that gorgeous hair isn’t just there for show! 🤘🏽😂 I knew there was a reason I enjoyed your channel so much lol

The psychologist character was Ben Stein, who played a teacher in Ferris Bueller's Day Off. (He's the one that was calling roll and kept repeating "Bueller? Bueller?") He was also a political advisor to Ronald Reagan, I think? and had a trivia game show for a short time, similar to Jeopardy. Oh, and he did the Clear Eyes commercials back in the late 90s.

I will agree with the suggestion of others - if you want some good Jim Carrey that isn't so much exaggerated comic-style, give "The Truman Show" a watch.
It's got a quirky premise, but it ultimately goes into some really serious drama/emotion as well.

The Mask is one of the few JC movies I've watched a few times. He was really awesome in it! It fit him perfectly. It's a goofy trip overall with a dash of romance. My favorite bit in the movie is the Cuban Pete segment. How can anyone not want to get up and have fun dancing to it lol? Now Nick....seriously, for a more dramatic mode of JC, react to -- The Majestic. So many of his early films were comedies, this one showed that he could do drama. It's a lovely movie. ❤😊

Yes, it's based on a comic. The comic is extremely dark, like whoever's got the mask, people end up dead. But since they had Jim Carrey, why go with anything other than what we ended up with? :)
You should check out the Dirty Harry Franchise. I've only seen the first one 'Dirty Harry' and one of the sequels 'The Dead Pool' which I didn't know was a Dirty Harry film at the time. The dead pool's got a very young Liam Neeson in a moderately large roll.
Incidentally, have you seen 'Dark Man?' Sam Raimi's comic book movie, that's not based on an actual comic book. Kind of like a prooving script for him to go on and make the Spiderman trilogy. The point with that is it's Liam Neeson starring. Great flick.

Speaking of a why so serious moment in the comics Stanley was a mass murderer who was violently killed at the end of the of the series. Since then, Dark Horse has produced several of mask series (generally 4 issues each). They have done some crossovers, especially with DC. One of those crossovers was when the Joker got the mask. Now there is a why so serious moment

Okay, so the first thing to know is that this movie is MUCH tamer than the comics. If this movie were comics-accurate, it would be a HARD R. Imagine if Tom and Jerry did all the same things, but showed the realistic results of what they did to each other.
2:44 - This is Cameron Diaz's movie debut.
4:58 - This is the same kind of car Fozzie Bear drove in The Muppet Movie. Don't know if it's the SAME car.
7:16 - This is Red Hot Riding Hood, one of the most iconic cartoons of legendary animator Tex Avery. His humor helped define the cartoons of Warner Bros. and MGM, which catered to more adult sensibilities than the cartoons of Disney.
9:54 - So this was always my favorite scene in the movie, but for 'some reason' whenever I saw it on television, they would skip straight from The Mask destroying the car to him attacking the mechanics. It wasn't until years later when I was much older and saw this uncut again that I realized what happened.
10:04 - This. TV stations would cut out this WHOLE SCENE just to drop this 3 second sex joke. They could easily have cut around this one gag but they didn't.
14:16 - An easy to miss detail here is that when Nico hits the golf ball out of Dorian's mouth, the drive machine registers a significantly farther distance than in the previous swings in the scene.
24:53 - This is what the Cancel Cultists THINK Pepe LePew is.
25:49 - So in one of the old Star Wars Expanded Universe books (what they call 'Legends' these days), Boba Fett tries to capture Han, but Lando gets the drop on him and saves Han (it's the first meeting for all of them). Han and Lando order Fett to disarm. I've always imagined that scene looks like this.
26:45 - So this is one of the most iconic scenes from this movie. This song was first released in the mid 30s and then popularized by none other than Desi Arnaz in 1946. He and Lucy performed it in an episode of I Love Lucy: ruclips.net/video/sQZ6vOQYdcs/видео.html
28:16 - I absolutely ADORE that you and Stanley have the exact same reaction at the exact same moment.
    38:34 - Dirty Harry.
    39:27 - Wrong movie.
41:13 - Not one that you'll want to watch.
