- Hi! Here’s a video I made at home, showing how I originally wrote ‘porcelain’ and also how I re-created it with Jim James for Reprise.
'Porcelain' by Moby is taken from the album 'Reprise' out now on Deutsche Grammophon.

Porcelain was the melody of an entire generation. Thank you moby.
This is so true. This man will live together through his music. A classic composer of the future. We will live on too brother 💜 💜 💜 ☮️
Very true
Cheers!
not for Eminem fans for some reasons.. I think that ruined him on the inside.
What sad generation it was then eh? ✌🏽
I remember you Moby.. I was kid and you was in a small village of Crete Island it calls Maleme and you was in my best friend hotel.. Before you release the album play...when you left the hotel you give me your album and you sigh on it and you said this is my new album and I hope that you will like it.. And you give other one to my best friends brother.. I didn't know you who you was, even my best friend and my best friends brother. .. But I remember that you was alone and very kind and very simple man.. When I listen your album I said.. Wooow.. You make my childhood amazing.. Thank you Moby!!
Wow, man)
That's awesome. He seems like such a genuinely nice guy
Awesome memory, thanks for sharing it petros.
One small act of kindness, can make such a difference...it's almost a miracle. Thank you for sharing
It's so beautiful
The true magic is the way he flipped the sample, odd he doesn't mention it because he should be incredibly proud
I agree. Very peculiar and obscure sample.
It's like a second long and then pitched around to make the melody. But like how did he even find himself playing with that clip??
I thought the same. It's such a clever thing to do, and I was really eager to find out how he came across the sample and what made him reverse it, but he mentioned nothing about it.
@@jren207 Still hiding and ashamed of sampling maybe? There should be no reason anymore. Yes this song launched a hugely successful music career and this sample is a huge chunk on that song and the original made no where near the money Porcelain did but there should be no guilt in that. Sampling was part of a bigger collective of artists from the time from Hip Hop, Indie, Techno, Trip Hop, and Dub/Electronuic music at the time that had a heavy foundation in the cheap 80's digital Akai samplers and 808 drum machines finding their way into the hands of bedroom musicians.
He says he wrote it on cheap synthesizers. This guy is full of shit. He was once the singer of FLIPPER...., just don't ask the guys from FLIPPER about if...
I bet he eats fucking meat.
That song is a piece of musical history
Well technically every song written is a piece of musical history. Lol
@@captainhook3962 I disagree .. but yeah sure 👌
He clearly built the song around the Ernest Gold sample in the intro lol
I was thinking this. I enjoy a romantic account of a songs conception though.
It's such a peculiar and obscure sample I'd actually love to hear how he found himself playing with it in the first place. It's like less than a full second long and then just pitched up and down to create a melody out of it.
@@_Tizoc_ It's a 5 second long, 4 chord loop just reversed.
I was thinking the same...
Absolutely! Wouldnt have been even better if he talked about finding the sample and the reverse
That song holds a precious spot in my heart since i'm a kid. Can't wait to hear its orchestral reprise! ♥️
Why does hearing that melody still make me cry 23 years later? :'|
Moby used the oldest trick in the book- if it sounds good forwards it usually sounds even better backwards. My theory is he tried the iconic string sample forwards at first, thought nah that doesn't sound quite right, press reverse- yes!!
I was born in 1987. This song means a lot to me. The word "nostalgic" is not enough to describe what I'm feeling while listening to this song. It will always be a favorite of mine. Thanks Moby for your music and for being such a great artist. cheers form Italy and take care
Moby's music is criminally underrated, I'm so thankful that I grew up to his songs. His style is so unique, it's really something else
"Play has been certified platinum in more than 20 countries, and with over 12 million copies sold worldwide, it is the biggest-selling electronica album of all time."
-Wikipedia, "Play (Moby album)"
Underrated?
Riiiiiighty-o then... 🤔
@alacanis I dunno, man. We all bought it, we all listened to it, we all loved it. We all still do.
Well I should‘ve mentioned among the younger generations :D So many young people don‘t even know who he is, meanwhile everyone knows who Scooter or Britney Spears are (bad example, I know)
@@alacanis Time marches on. Beatles didn't really rate in the 80s.
I'm dying for a why does my heart feel so bad reprise
Natural blues as well.
YES!
Play was THE BEST album for a century
Your wish was granted!
@Gaming York honey can you come play, some time ♡
Porcelain is a soulful and masterful piece of music created by a genius artist.
I discovered so much new music after that. Really got me into trip hop and the likes of
Massive Attack, Portishead. Unkle, Morcheeba, Tricky, Allflaws
Skip hip data to get the antimatter, blue lines are the reason why the temple had to shatter
Moby, you are brilliantly humble, generous, a trigger for inspirations and vocations, and ... always current. Thank you, Teacher!
Together creative !
Hello I'm Moby I'm sending a surprise shout-out to you just wanna say thank you for the love and support
100% !
Hey Moby, i m a DJ from Rio de Janeiro and i had the honor of closing a concert you played in the city in 2010. 11 years later still one of my most special gigs. Porcelain is my favorite song by you, thank you for all the inspiration 😊
Solta um remix de porcelain rsrs
@@raffarodriguez3333 hahahaha não seria má ideia 🚀
What is better than Moby presenting a video of his new version of his awesome "Porcelain"? Certainly having "God moving over the face of the waters" as the background. :)
Thanks. Was looking for a credit!
Deutsche Grammophon? Damn you know this is going to be impressive, can't wait to hear the full album
LOL MOBY'S GRAMMY awards PHONE
Thank moby God bless you brother I love you too
Porcelain is my favorite Moby song. Absolutely beautiful.
Moby is my favorite musician. His music is full of magic, wonder but at the same time melancholic. I really would like to watch him live one day, Greetings from Turkey 🇹🇷 !!!
Beautifully said! Thank you! I feel the same.
You guys need to branch out - there’s WAY better music out there
And not all of his music is melancholy. A lot of his songs are uplifting and some are high energy.
Everything is good at Moby :
his music, his personality, his sensivity, his philosophy, a very great artist and a great man !!!
Un exemple à suivre !!!
his tattoos are terrible though
@@billypilgrim1 Certainly.
They must have a maining.
Always takes me away to that beach.....
And still in my playlist.
Breaking up with a girl and creating music by myself late at night with cheap synthesizers = ✨ magic✨
no such thing as a cheap synthesizer as long as you can tweak it just right!
@@xehP Haha, Moby proved that!
What might those cheap synthesizers be?
The World is a better place with people like Moby
this is the definition of timeless music
Moby is a complete ARTIST!!! What a genius...
the whole of play made me feel like a travelled the word. a beautiful record
Play is the reason i'm still here today. Thank you Moby
One of my favourite songs
i remember getting the record for my 14th birthday and speeding home in my bike to play it. thanks mo'
Thanks Moby for your legacy, your music is just surreal, sad, fresh and beautiful in every sense.
There's nothing better than your music to get relaxed and unstress.
Truly a devine escape for many of us.
My favorite song ever, I remember I listened it for first time on MTV back in 2004, I rushed to get a notebook and wrote the name of the song to memorize it forever, 'cause that melody is so stuck in time, You can't tell is from 1999, it could be composed yesterday and people would believe it.
Hi Moby, in my best and my worst points of my life had your music, Thank you for you art. I overpassed my depression and my new love for the life are conected with you music.
its full of history reminds me about
90s / windows 95 / video clips from the 90s on floppy disk / Nokia phone / old feelings /
I just can't scribe it enough.
Thank you for Porcelain, thank you for the music Moby.
Thanks for your music.
Thanks for being there.
❤😻😽
Beautiful song
Greetings Mr. Melville, ever since reprised porcelain was posted, I've been listening to Play and 18 on loop until you posted this 😇.
Take all due care of yourself and keep composing, we NEED you, seriously.
Una pieza maestra, Moby es un genio musical 👍🏻
So happy to hear you talking about this song again after all thoses years ! A instant trip to my youth days, with a beautiful nostalgia that I i'll always relate with this song till the end of my life.
Thank you so much for all you created and all thoses brillants soundscapes and songs you brought and still bringing to the world.
The music out side of the lyrics sounds to me so calming when you know the back story though of the song you think maybe it could be a nod to relief ending some thing bad
👏🏾👏🏾 whether its with strings on a synthesizer or the string section of an orchestra that piano melody cuts through. Seriously haunting line that Moby could accompany with tin cans and it would still sound amazing, Legend 🙏🏾
Still remember Moby yelling ‘i love this song so fing much’ at the Werchter festival.
AWESOME MUSICIAN & PERSON!!!!
In love with your fantastic music since 2004 - the year I heard the album 18 for the very first time. Thank you so much, Moby, for the inspiration you bring us. Your songs, for sure, turned my life better.
Thanks Moby for Porcelain, it's so beautiful
I love you Moby...! Hugs from 🇬🇹
Can't stop playing this version. Feels like emerging from growth... remembering the original.
Such an inspirational background for a very beautiful piece of music, love you Moby
Thank you very much for your cosmic music, a lot of LOVE from Argentina.
Не привычно видеть Вас в возрасте.
В памяти всегда будете молодым.
Музыка Ваша супер! 👍
Он точно такой же, как и раньше, только борода поседела.
Absolutely love the back ground song from the end of movie Heat, so powerful. I had to listen to both these songs after this video.
Спасибо за эту чудесную музыку!!! Это потрясающий дар - возможность творить подобное великолепие!
So thrilling! 23 yrs later your voice is not alone anymore.
I love this guy
Thank you for this Song
I love when my favorite artist do orchestral versions of their songs. I especially love all the Gothic meets Klassik collabs which lead to the VNV Nation album. I can't wait for this. I wonder what else is to come.
I knew the song but that was it. And now after so many years I listened to it .. ironically having all those feelings you mentioned. A kind of sweet saddness in every piano key. And I didn't know the story behind the song till now.
From Argemtina, 20 years ago, you made me see how the the music works in my mind. Now, today, I still have that felliing and I keep doing my music on ¨cheap sythns¨ and It stills makes me happy for my style living. You're great man. Thanx.
We will most certainly LOVE it...
Hey Moby!!! What about the vocal of "heyy womannn, it's alrighttt"! Thank you for your sharing with your heart and soul, thank you ♥♥♥
damn 22 years later and i find out that porcelain was a duet , thanks for such great song moby loved it back in 2000
Was it a duet in the 90s or just for the updated _Reprise_ orchestral version?

Moby thank you very much ! Your music and your universe is a treat for me ! 17 years of pure happiness listening to you... Until my last breath I will listen to your compositions. A Frenchman who thanks you infinitely
That song means the world to me❤️
I'm more a "Natural Blues"/"In This World"/"When It's Cold I'd Like To Die"/etc. kind of person but "Porcelain"'s Reprise version is awesome!
I get the goosebumps from that solo violin and the drums 🥰
I didn’t know it was all made with live tools...🙂👍... and 18 is just, happy music.... - magic.....THANK YOU.....🙂🙃

I don’t know if you’ll ever realize how much this song has touched thousands and thousands of people. Through joy, grief, peace of mind, relief, despair, sorrow, bliss… there are sooo many human feelings that can relate through this song.
This is a genuine masterpiece, and I’ve been coming back to it regularly for over twenty years, and it’s not about to stop.
And now knowing the background of it just give it even more value.
Just, thank you.
