Boasting perhaps the most quintessentially English beginning to any song, Madness's 'Driving In My Car' brings to mind the opening credits of classic British '70s TV sitcom Are You Being Served. The stand-alone single came out in 1982, spending eight weeks in the UK chart and peaking at #4. The song documents the joys and tribulations of driving in the Maddiemobile, the 1958 Morris Minor featured here.

Madness has songs about everything, Driving in a car, waking up, going to work, staying in a bed and breakfast, living in a house etc.
Madness are a perfect musical representation of British humour. It's dry, it's a bit menacing, but it's so so so good.
Oh yes. The one and only thing my dad ever gave me was a love for Madness and for that at least I am grateful.
110% pure British excellence
1000% complete and utter Madness.
Preach!!
Brilliant. 🙏 respectful
Five bonus points for the Fun Boy Three cameo.
The older I get, the more I feel privileged to have been able to witness such a period in music history.
I was on holiday in the UK in the early 1980s - this song was on the radio pretty often and when i got back to Germany i went to my record store to get it. They had never heard of Madness before and no idea where to get the single. But then the owner of the store showed up and promised to order it from the UK for me if i'd be willing to pay for the postage. I did so and just about three weeks later - and a dozen visits to that store - my single vinyl finally arrived. Was probably the priciest single i ever bought (~ 20 Deutschmarks). But on the next party i played this song and everybody liked it - although nobody knew Madness back then. Just a year later "Our House" aso. was heard everywhere - and Madness was the new hot shit. But i was probably one of the (if not THE) first person(s) in Germany who bought the "Driving in my Car" single.
I just bought this 12inch single (it's 12inches but actually just a short 7inch version on it) in a second hand store. I love it. and i think I paid more than it's probably worth but still worth it. Thanks for writing your story about it.
Great story
@- Gutenberg targ
Well now you know what it was like to attempt to buy a Beatles single in the UK in 1961 when all they had was "Tony Sheridan and the Beat Brothers"
That’s quite lucky
The record seller at the start was my mate Sean, who we buried today 2nd July 2018. RIP Brother sadly missed
R.I.P. Sean you'll be selling records in heaven now
im so sorry for your loss :(
Dat Guy legend
Dat Guy x
Respect 😎👌
All my friends say I'm weird for liking madness,
But.... THEY'RE AWESOME
Ur not
they're the weird ones for not appreciating great music..
Thats True
I mean there awesome, not that your weird
Clearly they have covid BC they have no taste in good music
Terry Hall trying to hitchhike to Coventry killed me 🤣🤣
My Daughter just got her driver's licence, and then I remembered this song, sooooo fun. About time to pass it on to the next generation 🙂
1:55 Fun Boy Three trying to hitch hike to Coventry...
and Terry Hall is SMILING!!😊
Love the Mad Boys from Camden Town!
Thanks for posting... 🚗💥
Ohhh!
I didn't realise it was them!
@@Mortthemoose Lynval, Terry and Neville 🏆🏆🏆
1:03 goddamn that melody is criminally short
Sooooooo true :)
My favorite part of the song. Those few seconds are bliss in my ears
This!
I think the line "In a factory by the Tyne" is a reference to the car been built like a tank, Tanks were the only vehicles built next to the Tyne in 1959.
@Zak Jansen Cheers
He was referring to the women...
Just like my ol civic
Still are. Built in the vicars factory down in scotchee
Madness are my kind of band
mine to
+sonic2kk NO way!!! They are just my type ;)
+Diva Nino omg same!!!!
Same here
"The bloke from Brazil" on this video is actually wearing a Swedish National team jersey. Greetings from Brazil
😂😂😂
The English have no shortage of creativity and talents.
Madness is just one example!
Madness are so funny, they even raised a bright smile on Terry Hall's face !
What’s funny about this shit?
they'd just had a number one so their boss ordered them to record 'anything' to put out as a single to keep the momentum going. Barso sat at the piano and this was the result
Wow!
Genius!
I love Madness because they are my kind of guys I would like to hang out with. Funny, beautiful guys and good music. ❤❤❤
I may be getting old, but I was so lucky that Madness, The Specials, Duran Duran, Ultravox and many other great bands were part of my late teens and well into my twenties.
Very well said, same here. 53 from Malta
I nearly went bankrupt trying to purchase all the great music of then. Great bands we were spoilt with the endless list of options
im jelouse i was a toddler in the 80s but wow british bands rocked the clash the specials madness ect.ect. truly great moment to be a teen
Same but I'm only approaching 20... Absolute 80s got me hooked and now I can't stop
Even after 40 years great to see the Fun Boy Three lol
1:55: That's the Fun Boy Three (Lynval Golding, Terry Hall and Neville Staple) - formerly of The Specials - trying to hitch a lift to Coventry!
One of best songs ever made
My dad had the pleasure of working on this car that was in the video! It was done by Charles Ware Morris minor centre, with the Morris minor being the car in the video
Wow
Does the car still exist?
Madness just had the best music videos! Them messing around with silly props .. love it :)
+Lindsay Davis Bring back the 80s and the props!!!
Fun Boy Three trying to get to Coventry lol (first time I have seen Terry Hall smiling)
MegaJay70 I was about to say the Specials but you're right, it's Fun Boy Three! lol
I thought the sign said 'Cemetery'.
Madness; British music perfection 👌
My favourite bit of the video is when the car stops beside the band Fun Boy Three. They are trying to cadge a lift but Suggs drives off leaving them gobsmacked on the pavement. I love Madness videos and always hoped that the video would be shown on TOTP.
This video was shown on TOTP once. (I was 11 and now I am 51.)
I think it's a rite of passage as a British person first driving their car after passing their test to play this max volume. Right up there after going through the maccies drive-thru with the car loaded with mates. :3
i finally passed my driving test in july 2023 and then bought my first car a few weeks later in august 2023. this song was on my mind throughout.
I have always loved this crazy song , with all the sound effects. I drive a Morris 1300, 1973. I live on Hayling Island, so that's not far from Selsey Bill!
Madness still the best, this reminds me of my first car...sand coloured 1977 mini
we had the best bands and music
One of the better bands of the 80s, catchy tunes, good fun and way above the shite of today
This is one of the catchiest songs I've heard in my life
Honestly… madness have such good songs
@@CalvesFanatic True I've listened to more of their catalog since I posted this, lol
Agreed, same with some other songs, lovestruck and shut up are recommended by me
Fun Boy 3 have a cameo roll in this video. RIP Terry Hall. Coventry's finest singer.
I'll never understand why this was one of my favourite songs growing up.... But I accept it!
Just introduced this to my grandson. I still sing this after 40 years. 🙏👍🥳🥰
Brilliant! Great grandparenting, raising another madness fan.
You can bet that when I get my first car this will be the first song played in it
I remember waiting for the next madness vid they were the best ever, not like today when its all about posing and looking like a model, fun fun fun was the intention and god did they deliver
This song was written in about 5 minutes. Dave Robinson (The head of Stiff Records) asked Madness to write something quick to cash in on the success of House Of Fun which had just reached number 1 and Complete Madness was in the top 10 aswell. Great song, great video and a great band!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! New album out in december!!!!!!!!!!!!!
don't believe you
bro made a banger of a song in a 5 minute greed rush from the record label. yeah it's unsurprising that it's hard to believe
Even though the main melody and idea is simple a lot of time and production went into making and arranging all the sound parts involved. This is one of those that I always return to listen because it makes me happy. Such a favourite.
@@frankyw8803 So I, the very unusual and dissonant chord progression is far from simple, its on the cusp of being cacophonic but does work, it sounds as if some inner theme of some Frank Zappa music !
I was a kid and young teen during the second British Invasion. So many New Wave and ska bands to love that I couldn't possibly buy all their records (and was too young for shows). I really wish Madness had gotten more airplay in America, because I had no idea just how brilliant and successful they were! (Then again, I'm having a great time seeing these videos for the first time.)
I took my postal driver training and certification today & cranked this as I owned the track
"We've been driving in our car, Honda! City!
Takes us near and takes us far, Honda! City!
We bought it in Tokyo, Honda! City!
It was made in '83!"
So glad I caught these chaps live about 6 years ago! They were so energetic for dudes in their 60's!
I just bought my first car , ford fiesta 2000 and it made me think of this song lol
Gotta love a bit of madness ay?
i really love how the instrumental bit at 1:03 sounds, i wish it was longer lol
Me too! ...
samee
This just has a “The young ones” feel to it lol it’s like a scene from the series lol
This song came out here in Australia, about November 1982,just after I received my drivers license, very appropriate back then I thought 😊
Love Madness, love Morris Minors.
I love the instrumental change to Lounge music. Classic Video Clip,
Classic Band...
The one and only MADNESS. Simply out of this world creativity. Uniquely MAD. Awesome!
Just another example of the way that Madness could write songs about differing subjects, rather than hearts and love and all that business.
Im listening to this in my car right now,i remember when i was little i used to hear my grandad singing it and i found it funny, now i love this song
Their videos were the best in the World all through the 80's. Made me happy! They still do. Love their songs!
First record I bought with my own money as a kid, seen them a couple of years back in the Odyssey Belfast and can honestly say it was an absolute mental night.... loved it
!!!
Been listening to this song and a few other madness songs for 6 years. They’re not getting old
Hey yo it’s been 7 months and I’m still here lmao
Hey yo it’s been 7 more months and it’s still not getting old
@@aaronflorian8150 did it get old yet
Never heard this one over in the States so it's a "new old" song for me. Caught it on Richard Blade's "Magnificent 7 Monday" show on SiriusXM First Wave. Can't believe I missed this but enjoying in the best year ever.
year later, I stumbled onto the page as well. To a certain extent, this is how I feel with my car. A 2015 closing in on 150k miles and still runs as good as new.
RIP Terry Hall who had a cameo in the video (along with the rest of the fun boy 3) as the hitchhikers 😔😔
What a tune
What a bassist
I’VE BEEN DRIVING IN MY CAR LISTENING TO JEREMY CLARKSON
Came here to say this. 😂
Good one mate
Get a life you helmet & Good luck with your self driving electric car in 8 years.
@@nickieglazer7065 cry
I went on the internet today, and I found this.
1:26 this part is so good, especially the sound effect
Peaked at #4 in U.K. on 25 July 1982
This is the only song to play on the way down to Selsey Bill. I often regret not having a bicycle bell fitted to my steering wheel to warn other road users. Sweet nostalgia for a gentler time when pop music was sheer fun, and before it became pretentious or 'in your face'.
.....and on the road to Muswell Hill.....
love how the bassline matches the vocal....
the flashbacks of this being mine and my dads favourite song to play in his car when i was little
This would look so good remastered
Just realized the guys hitchhiking are Lynval Golding, Terry Hall and Neville Staple...
This group is Iconic 80,s . I was 16 when they debuted with "One step beyond" That was 1979. I loved their look and style.
WE’RE DRIVING ALONG THE ‘45 WITH THIS ONE!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
when i get a car im gonna sing this

This lives rent free in my head
this is madness
I love this!!!!!!!!!!
Maddness is in our young voices 2016
And The Remix Is Terrible...
Miss the early 80s. Classic
It doesn't get better than this
Gotta love madness !!
I can imagine if top gear used that as their intro
I get that reference ;)
"I've been driving in my car, listening to Jeremy Clarkson..." That jingle used to be my alarm sound in the mornings lmao
How this song gives me nostalgia about Muswell Hill and North London in general: Camden, Primrose Hill, Kentish Town, Dartmouth Park, Tufnell Park, West Hampstead.... I lived and worked in all those places. I wish I was back there.
🤣🤣 have always loved this song.
The video is genius!
Reminds me of my boyfriend's little Morris Minor, when I was about 19
I was the one who's job it was to pump the pump, that squirted water on the windscreen, to clean it. It felt like a very important job, especially as i couldn't drive at the time 🤣
I loved that car. 💜
Remember it breaking down twice....once we replaced the broken fan belt with one of my stockings or tights.
Then another time, the radiator sprang a leak, so we cracked an egg into it, and it sealed it! (I think only wealthy people could afford breakdown cover at the time)
ska aint dead, it just waiting for the rest of ya ta catch up
My brothers gonna start one when he's older he gonna be an comedian and film wirter
Very true oi oi 😎
@@JPowell1997 he'll need a typewirter if he's gunna wirte films.
Just bought myself a Moggie. Brilliant first car.
My fav group when I was a teenager!!
Like the cameo appearance of the Fun Boy 3 wanting a lift to Coventry!
Love this song brings a smile to my face every time hee hee.
this song always makes me smile. . . . reminds me of my Gran loool
80s tunes hit different
The first time I heard Madness was on an episode of The Young Ones (If you know, you know) when I was about 12. Even though I was vainly attempting to conform to the musical tastes of my metalhead friends at the time I still loved them from the second I found them!
I’ve finally found the song from the adverts
Actually it was the Fun Boy Three. The Specials had split long before this single came out and the Fun Boy Three had already released records under the new name.
It's pure MADNESS!!
I have been a huge fan of Madness, they remind me of a bunch of British TV shows.
love it
This is a song that i can listen in my car while driving in the City!
one big problem is that spotify made this song unplayable..I turned on the settings to show unplayable songs, and it didn't work.
Though one of the most weirdly and creative songs in my mind that is pretty great than good.
I just happened upon this by chance, this is my new jam
1:55 R.I.P. Terry Hall (1959-2022).
Oh how I wish I'd been growing up in the 80's
Me too :(
+NobleAni Yep you missed a shed load of great tracks......hey ho :)
+NobleAni this song is from 1992
***** are you sure?
Why? Was it the threat of imminent nuclear war that attracts you? The out of control unemployment? Thatcher? Reagan? Or maybe you missed Chernobyl going off? Couldn't have been the music, most of the stuff in the charts was crapper than the stuff in the charts these days.
such a clever song...like most of the one's written by madness
