@stephenmras8519 you seem like a good dude, man. I'm so glad the music can build bridges. That's really beautiful. Keep it rocking. Keep it punk. My best to you and yours.
Interestingly, my life momentarily crossed paths with Mike’s in those early days. After school one day, I went with a friend to “the dark hole”. He was rhythm guitarist with the Adolescents. I was a good student and quickly realized this was probably not a crowd I would hang with. I ended up becoming a banker, fat and rich, as Mike would say. All that said, Mike has mellowed with age, as have all of us. Even his music has mellowed and it has become much more melodic. I think that is why Social Distortion enjoys a much broader appeal than pure hard core punk rock.
I first heard of Social Distortion in high school in 1988-89 but never got into them. Maybe it was the songs I heard. Then in 1990 I was in the Army with this guy from Sacramento. SOOO much from the 90's does. bout to be 40 myself... god... and we didn't get cable til i was like 10 or 12. and then got dial up internet when we moved into my step dad's house. but i always locked myself in my uncle's room, even though he never lived in that house, had all his stuff. his old record/8 track/cassette player, and all his old albums. brian setzer, the police, zeppelin... and bon scott era ac/dc. and those have always been a big part. but when i found my own music, i didn't get it at the time, but after i got older i started actually understanding it and gained an even deeper appreciation. like back then, i just liked it cause it sounded good, or it sounded angry and dark. cause i was one pissed off little kid. well, not so little after about 9. i was 260+ and 5'11" when i was 12, outweighed my dad when i was 9 or 10 and only about an inch shorter if that, people always see him for the first time and i get a weird look, like you're the mail man's kid... never would've made it without all the great music when i needed to laugh cry or tear something to shreds.
Middle school me listening to this song and thinking deeply as I look to the other side of the backyard reminiscing about all the good times I had there but it's been a few weeks already and things just aren't the same. Adulthood felt like it took so long to reach and now childhood felt like it went by too fast. Makes me think of another song called Otterpops in the Icebox
Saw Social Distortion perform in Chicago quite a while ago. I was in the front row right in front of Mike Ness playin’ with an energy that totally penetrated every fiber of my being. They’re a great band to see live! 🎶
I'm 45 now. My best friend from high school introduced me to social d. She died several years ago but Mike still keeps it relavant. Rest in peace Court. I love you.
My gen X son turned me on to Social Distortion with this song. he played guitar in a tribute band called Social Distruction. IDK if it’s hard rock, punk, or whatever, but at 73 i like it Good solid band
charles rob you have no idea.... Used to listen to this record while cooking dinner with the woman that I KNEW I was gonna spend the rest of life with.... After seven years she walked away....
Yes it was. And even farther back it was even greater. I am gonna be 50 in few months & I remember skateboarding around downtown Omaha, Nebraska in the Old Market area & being chased out of places we were just trying shred some tailbone I still have my board.. a Powell Peralta R.I.P w/ the skeleton bursting its way out of the middle. I can't even begin to count how many tailbones I went through. Growing up in the 70's & 80's were great. I especially loved the 70's!! They had ALL the best stuff back then: The best music, the best movies, the best comic books, the best candy, the best toys, the best cars, the best & hottest movie babes(Farrah Fawcett, Jacklyn Smith, Bo Derek just to name a few), the best video games & arcades, the best board games... etc. Then the 80's happened. Here's my description of the 80's: School, job, cliques, conform, malls, bubblegum , jean jackets, spend, party, coke(boththe liquid & powder), one-hit wonders, middle-class bourgeoisie exploited worker-class pawns.. Good thing the 90's were a hell of a lot better. But here's the truth: when the 80's were happing, we were all caught up in it, not knowing exactly wtf we were doing. Then in the 90's , we looked back at the 80's and thought wtf were we doing? Those clothes? Those hair styles? That music we listened to?(Well not me, I listened to Punk Rock) While everyone around me were jumping on the bandwagon, I was avoiding it like it was the plague. Still do. I wanted to do my own thing, and still do. I encourage every one of you who reads this: do your own thing. Don't ever let someone else decide what you should do. Or tell you what is best for you. Figure it out yourself. You'll be a better person for it & respect yourself a little more in the long run. I leave you with this: The only person responsible for where you are today in your life... is you. Take care of you. It's no one else's responsibility. Think for yourself & make your own mind up, and never be afraid of acquiring the best of something. You'll always be happy with it. And you deserve it. Your happiness is not a destination or a place to arrive at in your life. Happiness, my friends.. is a "Manner of Traveling". I'm out. Late ~ This announcement has been brought to you by big d's Channel of Outspoken Knowledge ! !
Life was perfection back then. My biggest problem was how I was going to have sex with bandages wrapped from my wrists to my shoulders due to skinned up elbows and arms from eating shit street skating.
My dad loved this song, apparently as a young man my dad would do smeared mascara like Mike Ness. I really miss him, he died last week. Rest in peace Dad
47 years old now and this song brings me back to parties in our back yard off campus of OSU with Blatant Finger covering this song, so many skate boards, and bmx guys with no fear. We’re older now, but the adrenaline of those days always lives on....
I'm far too old to have been the target audience for this piece. But as a extremely hardcore, dyed-in-the-wool old school rock 'n' roller I have to love stuff like this. REAL musicians playing REAL music on REAL instruments. The only real way to go. Bravo!
I remember coming across this video when I was 12 years old, thinking it was a pretty decent song. 3 concerts and 8 years later, I'm proud to say I'm 20 years old and consider Social Distortion to be the world's best punk band of all time. I have gone on stage with them twice, met Mike Ness and the whole band, gotten the drummer's drumsticks, hugged Mike twice and got his guitar pick. I'll never forget the impact Social Distortion has had on my life. They not only helped me get through my bullied years of middle school, but introduced me to so much more music that shined a light on my world. I can't believe I'm about to turn 21 and I barely hit puberty when I fell in love with this band. I'm so thankful for these guys to be a part of my life, forever and always I'll never forget them. Thank you Mike Ness especially!
My first concert was seeing Social Distortion back in 2015. I was like 18, and I got tickets for my birthday. Went with my dad, and man did we just have a blast. Love these guys so much.
My first concert was one of theirs in like 2009-2010? I was about 7-8. My dad had me on his shoulders and he was dancing arounds and poured his beer on a lady, it was quite funny actually
Yes i agree lucky enough to have seen them in concert ! Seen the Clash have to say Social D .would give them a run for their money!! Great band no bullshit full on !!
This definitely is one of those thar never gets old, will always be a classic, always more relevant as time Flys right on by. Never fails to cheer me up the shorter it gets
The lyrics is so carefree and simple. You can hardly find any song like this one nowadays. Why do current pop songs have to be about love and relationship all the time?
I grew up listening to this song because social distortion is my dad’s favorite band. Very grateful to associate all of these masterpieces with the best kind of nostalgia ❤
@@dspf68 abso fuckin lutly ! He said when he was 10 years old he knew he was gonna be a rock star. Unfortunately he needed to go thru terrible fuckin heroin addiction to write real songs
Other side of the coin for me. I liked them since high school and finally saw them live much later. Mike Ness really put me off and made me not like the band. I still listen to this song though because I really relate
My dad loved social distortion, he was hardcore punk rock back in his teenage years and lived a life really similar to this song. He ended having a stroke two years back and ended up going into a coma he never came out of. While he was in the hospital I sat and listened to this song daily with him, I love this song but it brings me tears almost every time so I listen to it sparingly. Anyways I just wanted to share, thank you Social Distortion for bringing joy to both me and my dad.
This song reminds me of people I know who just glided through life without taking a stand for much or committing to any particular craft, and ten years later found themselves without any skills beyond recapping yesterday. (I'm sure the people who this song speaks to weren't like that, but that's the feels I get from this. Great tune either way)
"This silly schoolboy crush wasn't just pretend." Thanks, Mike. For EVERYTHING, ALWAYS and FOREVER. You are one of my many musical and lyrical heroes (die-hard Social D fan since 1991).
Great track, great band, these boys have been there for me in bad times, just been back to my old stomping ground, all changed now, this song resonates more, the older you get..
Can't get anymore real than this. This is music for the ordinary guy who has to deal with changes, struggle and life in general. Autobiographical in a way or perhaps just an anthem for the working class. Totally contrary to the pretentious crap being released from contemporary rock acts.
I absolutely love the vocals behind Social Distortion, it's been stuck in my head forever. It's crazy how many memories pop back up when life was "normal" < 3 : }
I'm praying for Mike and the most peace he can have right now. Social D helped me through so much in life. They'll always be loved and never forgotten. ♥️
When you was a kid, you think this is an enjoyable song. But when you getting older, you realize that the entire lyrics is the actual "story of my life".
@ooOmegAaa Or the entry level jobs asking for a bachelor's degree that don't pay enough to pay off a student loan. I once witnessed a Walmart manager directing at least 8 workers in chanting and clapping like they did in evangelical Christian school, so I knew the company wasn't on an even footing. It wasn't a surprise when I found that Walmart was so fucking lazy that employees had to subsidize the company by going to a bulletin board to seek out welfare programs. Walmart paid shit per hour and expected employees to spend break time searching their bulletin board for local subsidies. Maybe the heirs of a wealthy person can literally drag the deceased from Heaven to Hell just because they left money and power to children that weren't taught. Rest wherever Sam Walton, but your kids didn't carry on what your businesses were built on. I don't think $15 an hour is enough to get you out.
Loved this way 16 back in '94.....and listening to this now sounds so bittersweet and is really hittin me hard. Everything's all changed, as well as there is next to no one from my old high school days. Most every single Brother from back in the day are all dead now. This song really hits me hard these days. This is The Story of my Life.
it's the story of many lives out there... a lot of people go through that phase... life gets dull and then you start to reminisce. but we have to remember to go out of our way to do the things we like as well as those we gotta do.
Discovered this song in 2002 during my senior year of high school. I always felt this song would be awesome to play in the background of a late 90s or early 2000s teen movie during the opening credits/introduction scene.
They did, in the opening credits of Orange County! It came out in 2002, just before I turned 17 and out of all the teen movies of that golden era, that’s the one I really related to and still go back to 20 years later. One of the best ensemble casts EVER, by the way.
I saw Social Distortion live last night and I was just blown away…like their mixture of punk and blues and the kind of punk folk hero vibe I got…changed my life
Me too! I been loving some Social D since 16.....'93. 45 now and these seriously my fav songs of all time! Also so Bittersweet watching this and thinking about my life, same as you. We sure been through our share of Heaven and Hell my Brother

Shit, life really does go by that fast. Feels like just yesterday I was a teenager playing guitar hero with my friends in an attic, riding my dirtbike down my home street and eating asphalt off of a makeshift ramp. And even though it feels that way, every step into the future is a step away from those memories. The things I'd do to have those years back...

Who else remembers Mike Ness riding around Orange County, California, on his motorcycle? He always wore a helmet, but the sleeveless t-shirts & tattoos gave him away. Nice guy... he always waved back. ☺
not such a nice guy. He just jumped on a fan and punched him in the face a bunch of times while his fans held the guy down. Mike Ness is really nice.... as long as you aren't a Trump supporter.

Some people believe a show should not be political. Did Mike Ness always give political lectures? If so, the guy is wrong. I would expect Jello Biafra to maybe give a leftist speech, for instance. He could've said, "hey there sticking your finger up. I hear you. I think you are wrong. Who here agrees with me?" The fans would cheer and the guy would feel out of place. Instead he reacts. Over 800 people have been assaulted for wearing MAGA hats. I'm not even right wing but I see the modern left as sociopathic. this is full on Trump derangement syndrome. The Global media hate Trump because he's a U.S. nationalist. People should cool down. I have to constantly forgive all these musicians and media figures with Trump derangement syndrome. I was in my hometown today and visited my old neighborhood. Saw the houses where my friends used to live, then went to the apartment complex where we would hang out at the pool. The payphone wasn't there and the vending machine is gone. There were new stores built up around the roads around it. So strange and yet I remember when I was there as a 13-year-old discovering new music, getting high, and drinking.

Been listening to Social Distortion since I was real real young back in the late 90's, never really how amazing their bassist is, absolutely insane, one of the few group where the bass shines through and is really an important part of the music.
Lyrics Here!!/ Letras Aqui!! High school seemed like such a blur, I didn't have much interest in sports or school elections. And in class I dreamed all day, About a rock 'n' roll weekend. Life goes by so fast, you only want to do what you think is right. Close your eyes and then it's past; (It's the) Story of my life. And I went down to my old neighborhood, The faces have all changed, there's no one left to talk to. And the pool hall I loved as a kid Is now a Seven Eleven. I went downtown to look for a job, I had no training, no experience to speak of. I looked at the holes in my jeans And turned and headed back. Life goes by so fast, you only want to do what you think is right. Close your eyes and then it's past; (It's the) Story of my life. Good times come and good times go, I only wish the good times would last a Little longer. I think about the good times we had And why they had to end. So I sit at the edge of my bed, I strum my guitar and I sing an outlaw love song. Wonderin' bout what you're doin' now And when you're comin' back. Life goes by so fast, you only want to do what you think is right. Close your eyes and then it's past; (It's the) Story of my life.

1rst verse literally me ,wasted my time dreamin when i could just act and have that crush with me atleast while school lasted ,time flied so fast i missed my chance
Out of all of their songs, this one resonates with me the most. A few years back I went to my old neighborhood and saw that it was completely changed which hurt. But the one thing that hurt that most was the pool hall I used to hang out in, the one where I lost my virginity in was gone and is now a dollar general. I know that times change but the pool hall had a place in my heart and now it's gone forever
I just recently went back to my hometown. I drove through listening to this song because it had changed for the better but some older places were still there.

My gen X son turned me on to Social Distortion with this song. he played guitar in a tribute band called Social Distruction. IDK if it’s hard rock, punk, or whatever, but at 73 i like it Good solid band
It's just straight up 50's rockabilly with GenX honesty

Brings back memories of skateboarding and no cellphone life was great back then
Yes it was. And even farther back it was even greater. I am gonna be 50 in few months & I remember skateboarding around
downtown Omaha, Nebraska in the Old Market area & being chased out of places we were just trying shred some tailbone
I still have my board.. a Powell Peralta R.I.P w/ the skeleton bursting its way out of the middle. I can't even begin to count how
many tailbones I went through. Growing up in the 70's & 80's were great. I especially loved the 70's!! They had ALL the best stuff
back then: The best music, the best movies, the best comic books, the best candy, the best toys, the best cars, the best & hottest
movie babes(Farrah Fawcett, Jacklyn Smith, Bo Derek just to name a few), the best video games & arcades, the best board games...
etc. Then the 80's happened. Here's my description of the 80's: School, job, cliques, conform, malls, bubblegum , jean jackets, spend,
party, coke(boththe liquid & powder), one-hit wonders, middle-class bourgeoisie exploited worker-class pawns.. Good thing the 90's
were a hell of a lot better. But here's the truth: when the 80's were happing, we were all caught up in it, not knowing exactly wtf we were
doing. Then in the 90's , we looked back at the 80's and thought wtf were we doing? Those clothes? Those hair styles? That music we
listened to?(Well not me, I listened to Punk Rock) While everyone around me were jumping on the bandwagon, I was avoiding it like
it was the plague. Still do. I wanted to do my own thing, and still do. I encourage every one of you who reads this: do your own thing.
Don't ever let someone else decide what you should do. Or tell you what is best for you. Figure it out yourself. You'll be a better person
for it & respect yourself a little more in the long run. I leave you with this: The only person responsible for where you are today in your life...
is you. Take care of you. It's no one else's responsibility. Think for yourself & make your own mind up, and never be afraid of acquiring
the best of something. You'll always be happy with it. And you deserve it. Your happiness is not a destination or a place to arrive at in
your life. Happiness, my friends.. is a "Manner of Traveling".
I'm out.

I first heard these guys in high school. I'm 49 now and still listening.

I've been listening to these guys for 30 years. Absolutely phenomenal from the first time I've heard it to the 10,000 time.
Legit one of the Greatest Bands of all time. Their music is timeless and amazing!!!
I'm far too old to have been the target audience for this piece. But as a extremely hardcore, dyed-in-the-wool old school rock 'n' roller I have to love stuff like this. REAL musicians playing REAL music on REAL instruments. The only real way to go. Bravo!
this song came out in 1990. How old are you?
Glad to see you here, if you’re enjoying this, you’re not too old for it! Keep rocking!
What are you doing tonight? Asking for a friend
Wow, amazing timeless song. I know nothing is really timeless but this song is cool.
This has a great ring to it. The bassist nails it down in this one!
"I didn't have much interest in sports or school election". Hits home. Social D is my favorite punk rock band.
They were my first concert too!!!! 1986
I took my teenage son to Social D a week ago in Anaheim CA. What a great show. I will remember it forever.
If you ever get the chance to see these cats play, in person, you will not be disappointed. Amazing band. Seen them twice in Dallas. Outstanding!

This definitely is one of those thar never gets old, will always be a classic, always more relevant as time Flys right on by. Never fails to cheer me up the shorter it gets
3) It also always chokes me up. 44yo is a bitch
It actually gets better with age. Something very unique. A true masterpiece.
I agree with this
Real music from the heart never gets old! Rock 'n Roll. It's not just something we do, it's our way of life. 🔥🎸
The lyrics is so carefree and simple. You can hardly find any song like this one nowadays. Why do current pop songs have to be about love and relationship all the time?

2020, 65 years old and this song still moves me!
That's not a bad thing. Good for you, man.
Thats not a bad thing , sounds like you like good music! ENJOY!

They played this song at my cousin's' funeral, he was 17 when he passed, gutter punk. I miss him, I've now twice outlived him. 🏴
I try to live my life everyday like the bass player acts in this video. I have never seen anyone enjoy themselves that much

Man this song...such a great song. And it really is speaking the story of my life. I miss the old days.
Glad I'm enjoying my youth while I still have it. My kids aren't going to believe how much of a blast I had

When you was a kid, you think this is an enjoyable song. But when you getting older, you realize that the entire lyrics is the actual "story of my life".
that doesn't make any less enjoyable.

The best rock songs I have discovered were played at the end of movies. Soundtracks done right.
Dude. Same. Born in 84, grad 2002. Cheers bro. Stuff is gold man
They did, in the opening credits of Orange County! It came out in 2002, just before I turned 17 and out of all the teen movies of that golden era, that’s the one I really related to and still go back to 20 years later. One of the best ensemble casts EVER, by the way.

Just saw them with my teenage son. So glad to have this together with him. Such a good time.

@@johnacuna3221 I can't believe almost 60 year old Mike Ness attacks people that offend him. Ness was promoting leftist politics. Barbara SAteisand does the same thing.
He probably believes all the fake news. In reality Obama deported more people an Trump. Trump is to the left of George W. Bush. He's to the left of Clinton. The Global media hate Trump because he's a U.S. nationalist. People should cool down.
I have to constantly forgive all these musicians and media figures with Trump derangement syndrome. Actors especially. They put themselves into elite culture and agree with everything they say.
I have to forgive them because I would have to stop watching movies or music. Rich performers are so vapid when they talk politics.

High school seemed like such a blur,
I didn't have much interest in sports or
school elections.
And in class I dreamed all day,
About a rock 'n' roll weekend.
And the girl in the front of the room, so close yet so far y'know she never seemed
To notice
That this silly school-boy crush
Wasn't just pretend.
Life goes by so fast, you only want to do what you think is right.
Close your eyes and then it's past;
(It's the) Story of my life.
And I went down to my old neighborhood,
The faces have all changed, there's no one left to talk to.
And the pool hall I loved as a kid
Is now a Seven Eleven.
I went downtown to look for a job,
I had no training, no experience to speak of.
I looked at the holes in my jeans
And turned and headed back.
Life goes by so fast, you only want to do what you think is right.
Close your eyes and then it's past;
(It's the) Story of my life.
Good times come and good times go,
I only wish the good times would last a
Little longer.
I think about the good times we had
And why they had to end.
So I sit at the edge of my bed,
I strum my guitar and I sing an outlaw
love song.
Wonderin' bout what you're doin' now
And when you're comin' back.

First heard these guys playing the quad at Cal Fullerton back in 1990. Can’t believe that’s more than 30 years ago now.
RIP pool hall
