you actually can still recalibrate it by holding the analog stick in the middle, tricking the Switch into believing that you let go of it. but if ur at this point then it honestly wouldn't help recalibrating anyway.

Hey! If you have the drift, and don't have the cleaner and you don't want to deconstruct your joycon, I would recommend just getting a regular plastic straw. Try to put it under the plastic that's on the joystic, and then blow through it. Repeat this for a while and the dust under the stick should disappear. It's actually really simple and it helped me to fix my drift, so I hope this helps!

Bought a repair kit on amazon for £10 (which has the replacement part and all the screwdrivers you need) and followed this video and I'm now fixed! Thanks so much. It was very fiddily to put things back but I kept trying!

I bought a 2nd hand switch from someone on Facebook and they failed to mention the absolutely awful joy con drift in the left joy con. Tried the contact cleaner ('WD-40 Specialist Contact Cleaner' with the lil straw on it) method. 1 short blast and a nice massage and it works good as new! :D Thanks!

UPDATE: A little bit of the drift has come back, but it is absolutely not as bad as when I started out needing to fix it.
If the drift comes back, give the analog stick another few sprays with the contact cleaner from different angles and it should continue to work! (Or that's what has worked so far for me at least, anyway).
Why do $80 controllers drift?
Exactly, they’re cheaply made yet sell for tons. Absurd
Dominic Mallano because they are made in China poorly, on top of that Nintendo suck at analogue stick design. Nintendo 64 sticks had grinding issue where it would then wobble after it grinded into powder.

Thanks for the vid, NintendoLife! Grabbed a replacement kit off Amazon for roughly $15 USD, followed the video guide, and managed to replace my favorite joycon's bad analog stick, and voila! It works perfectly! It was a one-way trip, though, as I stripped one of the tri-wing screws while closing everything up! 😅

You're telling me you have 17 out of 17 working joycons while 70% of all joycons I've encountered have drifting issues.
He probably doesn't use most of them, so they don't have issues.
Mine were drifting so I replaced them, and not 1 week after I took this new pair home, the left started drifting. Whoopdy freakin doo.
Not to be a PS4 fanboy but none of my Dualshock 4s have been damaged due to an accident.
The most accidental damage I have witnessed was when the left stick of my first controller was slightly less precise after intense panicking in fights and generally going ham on the left stick because I can't build that well.
I fixed mine once, but it happened again.

7:49 and 8:01 are optional for those who don't want to remove a lot of ribbon cables, but it does limit your movement during the analog stick replacement so just be extra careful.
Another method is to simply put some thick paper under the stick to provide the potentiometers with better contact with the plates
Nothing over 1.5mm though as that could cause more damage

Thank you so much! Recalibrating helped a LOT, it's actually usable now. Still going to try cleaning cause it's still got issues. If need be I'll replace the stick down the line, seems simple enough. Always have loved your vids and when I was searching for guides I saw yours and immediately knew it'd be great and thorough.
I worked at a call center under Nintendo as seasonal work, and almost all of my calls as system support were about joycon drift. This was last year's Christmas into January.

They stopped doing repairs for controllers because of Virus THANKS GOD!
My drift got so extremely bad that i got desperate and couldn't wait, so i used a LCD screen cleaner and sprayed that, and it dead ass worked. its been 10 minutes and so far its working without drift
EDIT: Spoke too soon, the drift came back, maybe i didn't clean it enough, i did 1 spray and let it dry

From now on when cleaning your electronics it's much safer to use isopropyl alcohol or IPA for short. A 90% concentration will evaporate quickly and do a fine job of removing stuck on dirt and grime.

I ended up having to change the joystick - the most fiddly part I found was reconnecting the ribbon from the shoulder button because of its minimal slack! - little tip for those with the same problem, i used the tweezers and then it went in right away 😁
Calibration was impossible due to the stick fighting me so much. But the contact cleaning worked perfectly first time! Thanks for saving me loads of money :)

But my problem isn’t realy drifting. My problem is that when I let go of the joy-con, the circle gets slowly back to the middle.

The cleaner(or even just blowing on it) should still work on that. It is still slightly drifting and the cause is still likely just dust
That means that it's got sticky stuff on the stick somewhere

Similar concept. The same methods could fix it
For Method 1. When you are the calibrate screen. Don't just take that cross as saying its fine. Flick the control a few times around and let it rest without you touching it and see if the cross stays.
Also note that a "contact cleaner" you may have already in your house is isopropyl alcohol. Use 99% pure stuff though.
For anyone wondering I ended up replacing the joycon and it worked perfectly, great video

I'm pretty sure broken machinery counts as a problem.
I fixed mine by this method. I simple grabbed a q tip, alcohol and something to open the flap of the controller like twizzers. Wet the q tip a bit and open the flap and just circle the q tip all around, it does take time and you have to test how to joy con does from time to time. I blowed at it too! You have to make sure the dust is gone. It quite worked and I could finally cook and stand on cliffs in the legend of Zelda happily lmao, It felt like I had more control over it. I believe it is not permanent, you'll had to do this from time to time. Patience is key to a happy gaming ^^
Didn't have electronics cleaner but I did have Mass Air Flow meter cleaner and it worked perfect. two drops and spun the joystick for a few minutes and it works perfect! Thanks for the video!
I've gotten so used to drifting in Spoon 2 and Zelda it felt weird when I got a pro controller and I didn't have to fight to aim or controll the camera

Couldn't type anything, Couldn't select items, Couldn't turn in Mario kart and would lose to my 10yr old every time ... used the wd40 contact cleaner, applied it and let it dry overnight, played like new. Well worth the $7 for the 2 sprays it took to fix my 2 joy cons ... THANKS FOR THE TIP!!!

The joycons have amazing stuff inside, ir camera, hd rumble, nfc reader, but WHY, WHY IS IT SO FRAGILE SO IT CAN DRIFT EASILY
Ikr. My left joycon drifts up and it’s really annoying. I just got frustrated and bought a pro controller since it’s cheaper and better. Plus I only need the joycons for motion control and multiplayer (of course I’ll give the broken one to someone I dislike lol)
Anonymous yes, all controllers have that issue but the joy-cons are smaller, different, and poorly designed leading to a much greater chance of drifting.
Edit: I’d also would much rather have a pro controller over the small joycons since it’s way more comfortable

Because they wasted money on filling it with said shit instead of acutal quality.
The amount of times I've had to deal with joycon drifting is ridiculous, but Nintendo at least replaced the first two ones with the built-in, year-long warranty.

Omg. I used tweezers and picked out bits of fuzz in there and then i used compressed air for computer keyboards and i lifted that flap and sprayed just alittle bit on each side. Left it for 5 minutes and then i tried the qtip wash. Just abit of damp hot water then flatten the qtip so it can get in the flap and wiped it around the joycon then did abit of compressed air again. I checked it out after 5 minutes and my calibration is perfect now, joycon isnt moving on its own anymore and i can rotate the joycon and it does what its suppose to do. Thank you for this upload. Im very happy now 😄 NOTE: WHEN USING THE COMPRESSED AIR MAKE SURE IT DOESNT SPRAY ANY LIQUIDS BECAUSE IT TENDS TO DO THAT AFTER EACH USE AND DO NOT SPRAY DIRECTLY IN THE JOYCON FLAP. TRY AFEW INCHES AWAY AND GIVE IT A QUICK BLAST OF AIR.

Just take it to a repair shop, theyre cheaper than outright buying a new one
I would do the same thing I might break the joy con if I do method 3 instead of purchasing a new one
