POP is an amazimg album. They should have taken more time in the studio to make songs more playable. This Gone arrangement is amazing. Misunderstood. The dark U2 is awesome
This may sound corny, but its how I feel… It genuinely hurts my heart how the band feels about this album. They’ve distanced themselves from it almost completely at this point. To an extent I get why. I’m sure its very difficult when you introduce something as art and it gets criticized heavily. And since they have such an extensive catalog to choose from when comprising set-lists, they basically act like it doesn’t exist. But this album was so good. Gone and Please are easily two of their best live tracks. And they never play them. Please on the 1997 MTV music awards is a top-five U2 moment for me. Just absolute perfection.
Agree completely. I think it was a calculated move to distance themselves from the Achtung-Zooropa-POP trilogy of great albums and reinvent themselves as dad-friendly stadium rock once more. POP was simply the scapegoat because they couldn't really dunk on Achtung or Zooropa too much (both were big hits). The sad ending to this story is that apart from one good record (All That...), they never recovered and basically became the Cranberries minus Dolores and with added obnoxiousness (Lady Gaga? iPod spam? Really?) and smoke and mirrors. POP was the last attempt at a great record these guys ever made.
The weird thing is that Pop has a stunning array of good songs, but it may not work as a "full album" - whereas Zooropa has an odd mix of minor songs or almost b-sides but it really works as a coherent album!! I guess they worked too long on Pop and was also pressured by a deadline.....
@@TennisLegends-j7k They’re not bad. For the most part, they just basically tweaked them to make them more radio friendly. But since those tweaks didn’t result in getting on the radio, it almost reeks of desperation. And I don’t think they really ever totally recovered from it.
I would pay to see U2 play this whole album live. New arrangements new perspective. This performance is among their angriest, best takes. Edge’s throw down and kick of the guitar at the end sums it up perfectly. That’s how you fucking play it!
Thankfully I was blessed enough to see them live in Chicago , actually more blessed to see them many times live . Consecutive nights ,but never the same show. In my opinion all time great band ,since the very early 80s just to show my age a bit,lol
@fallinginthed33p Yep. Larry finished early. Edge wanted to keep going. They crossed signals somehow. It doesn’t show it on this video, but on the behind the scenes DVD extras as soon as edge tosses and kicks his guitar, he immediately darts for Larry starts screaming at him. From what I can see he looks like he’s pointing at himself saying “you were supposed to follow me“.
This song doesn’t get its due! “Gone” may be one their most hard rock songs they ever perform! I also like how they let the song evolve throughout the years to the point where they re-recorded it on the greatest hits CD. And I must say that I kind of miss Bono playing rhythm guitar on some of these songs. It added another element of Rock & Roll to some of their songs.
How many bands can get away with only playing about 5-10% of their greatest hits at concerts bc there are so many great songs in their catalogue? We’ll probably never hear this song again live. Like many others.
The Edge tira la guitarra y la patea porque siente que sonaron horrible, pero es una versión excelente en vivo, solo su obsesión por la perfección llevó a esa actitud
Actually, The Edge had planned a solo part that the band rehearsed a few times. He for forgot to play it during the first night in Boston and figured he’d make it up during the second night in Boston. The second night in Boston is what is being used in this video. The Edge forgot to play the solo for the second night in the row. That’s why Adam looks at Larry and then the Edge before Bono sings “You’re taking steps that make you feel dizzy and then you learn to like the way it feels.” Bono heard that Edge missed his solo for a second night, but the audience was none the wiser as the band just carried on playing the song without the Edge’s recently developed solo for the song. If you notice, Edge’s guitar playing became very sloppy towards the end, as he was already very agitated and annoyed at himself. He threw the guitar down and kicked it, figuring it would be edited out from any released video. When The Edge met with his band mates and their managers, they convinced him to sign off on releasing the producers, thereby, granting them permission to include that moment in the concert DVD. They felt it helped “humanize” them a bit more to their audience.
Can anyone tell me why Edge flipped out at the end? And please don't say it's because Larry ended early, cause I don't buy it. Larry's timing was perfect, and I'm sure they've rehearsed and played the song hundreds, maybe thousands of times.
Ditto. It bugs me too. Every time they have one of those social media question and answer session with fans, I send that in. I probably sent it in 100 times by now. But it never gets picked. I know the odds of it being picked are very slim. But I do it anyway. As an aside, I feel similarly skeptical to you Edge being mad at Larry because he ended the song early doesn’t seem like the explanation. But in the behind the scenes/DVD extras it shows Edge, immediately after throwing and kicking his guitar, dart over to Larry and start screaming at him. So while I’m not absolutely convinced that’s the explanation, I do think its possible. Link in case you haven’t seen it.. ruclips.net/video/ySD8ykPm_DY/видео.htmlsi=IHy3Qz5tOj3wTdTs
It’s because he was having issues with the sound of his guitar , you can see Bono kneeling down and fixing it then you can really hear the edge shred after the problem was resolved but that’s what pissed him off .
POP What an underestimated album that is. GONE, just one of the great songs from that great album.
Crazy thing is that the studio version of the album didn’t really do it for me but the live performance is phenomenal !

So so good! I was just remembering the lyrics before it played….

I found my CD for this concert. I played it, and this song brought me back to 2001 in the MCI Center. This song is so good live.

That's because Larry fucked up and cut off his final solo

When live version is better than studio
U2 ... almost always
Most of U2's songs are better live
god I really love Bono's voice from that era

A true masterpiece ……..
Música fantástica, banda fantástica! O mundo é melhor com U2!
SOOO much better than the album version. Lennon meets Zeppelin
L. Mullen Jr is a drumming machine!

I fall in love in U2 with that song, when i was 9 year old. Masterpiece
You can see the edit here. Red guitar from night one where Edge lost it at the end. Black guitar from night two.
Noticed it after reading your comment.
AND why Edge kick it?
I can’t believe that this wonderful song played by a wonderful band has only 4 fucking comments...
One of my all time greats.
Wish they'd put out an album purely aimed at showing the genius of The edge and let him totally rock out on it.
Best video to share on your mgr / coworker exit email when you retire.
I honestly love POP album, but U2 knew that they wouldn't replicate the sound in concert.
That furious final Epic
Was in MEN Arena Manchester for this tour........ WOW.
Snap
The Edge tira la guitarra y la patea porque siente que sonaron horrible, pero es una versión excelente en vivo, solo su obsesión por la perfección llevó a esa actitud
Final apoteosico, rabioso.....Brutal!!!!!!
It was tuned wrong they tune just below concert pitch to suit Bono's voice and the guitar was tuned to concert pitch that's why it sounds a little off

I think they practiced to do it in that way, giving a funny touch at the end, I don’t know haha but what a great song and a great live performance!!!
He would play a solo and forgot, then in the second night he forgot again and got upset

There is pov footage from Larry's drum cam that shows Edge yelling at him after the song's performance. It's on the special features of the Boston DVD
Thanks for uploading!
This song deserves an acoustic version, amazing 👏👏👏
No thanks. Electric its ok.

It loses its power if its acoustic
No it’s perfect the way it is
damn. what a sound he gets from that ric.
Esta interpretación tiene que ver con Michael Hutchence (INXS) Bono lo apreciaba mucho y su muerte fue algo terrible para el
Love this❤️🎸❤️
Is Bono doing the tremolo picking at the end? It starts two bars before the Edge does it...
faz tempo que eu escuto isso

I've never seen The Edge throwing a guitar like this

Did The Edge abuse his Rickenbacker at the end?
Why edge kiking The guitar?
Because Larry finish song earlier and stopped edge to play guitar
@@paunalko781 uhh jeje The kid Larry..
the guitar was out of tune
Final notes on the guitar sounded out of tune, and he decided to teach that Rickenbacker a lesson!
Edge was in a groove with his solo and Larry stopped too early.
one day i wish to have the money to kick a four thousand dollar guitar
It's a much better song without all the garish costumes and sets of the pop era lol 😊
It’s ok but certainly not great
